Dont know if this has been mentioned before here, but just realised that T-Mobile UK explicitely allows tethering ! See here http: //support.t-mobile.co.uk/discussions/index?page=forums&topic=80103803ac7b7fd01276dd2137000728a
Thats awesome, for 10 quid a month I have my Desire mobile phone and I don't need a separate broadband dongle when on the move with my laptop. I tried it already under Win7, just need to install HTC Sync, connect the Desire using USB, and it works!!
Depends on your contract.
This is from the fair usage pages on the t-mobile website:
Pay monthly plans which include internet on your phone on an Android phone You'll need internet coverage, check it at t-mobile.co.uk/streetcheck. Remember that you can only use your internet on your phone Booster in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem or use web'n'walk Plus for peer to peer file sharing, or making internet phone calls. *Internet on your phone comes with a fair use policy of 3GB a month. We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our internet on your customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much. As your phone is always connected to the internet, if you remove your internet on your phone Plus Booster from your account you'll automatically be charged up to £1 every day. That £1 a day rate has its own fair use policy and other legal stuff, which you can see here: t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/#fup5.
Edit, forgot the source:
https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/?WT.mc_id=fup#fup2
just read that thread.....that t-mobile guy says that tarriffs including wnw plus do include tethering, but t-mobile do not give those tarriffs out any more....the current tarrifs just include 3GB of data, and not tethering.
I spoke to a store salesman and a very competent techy. both said that tethering is included in the contract`s 3gb limit on android.
hmmm, i'd still like to wait and see, cos the new contract i just signed up for quite clearly says no on the T&Cs on the website.
course, my old web and walk plus one has no such issue
Mind you, t-mobile are very easy going, so there's no saying that they'll actually enforce it even if it's not included....
I used to use it with my old SE C902 never a problem. T-Mob forum guys also confirmed a while back that it is allowed.
yeah but that forum post was on the OLD contracts, not the new ones they bought in recently.
Like i said, i have an old contract that has WnW+ on it and yes, tethering is allowed on that one.
the new contracts that they are selling the desire on, definitely say that no tethering is allowed on the compulsory £5 a month android phone internet thingy. And much as i have been a customer of t-mobile since 2004, i don't trust their forum or support staff, cos i used to work with some of them.....

Uh.. I was a new customer to T-Mobile and I have 'web'n'walk Plus' listed as my inclusive internet.
There's no way they would know if you had tethered or not. As far as the network can see, its just your mobile phone sending data. Considering that there's not a lot that this phone can't do on the web, I think they would find it pretty hard to know you were tethering based on the web pages you visited. Granted p2p may be a different kettle of fish all together, so I'd be weary about using p2p.
Just my opinion...

actually, just realised there are ways they could find out, but I would imagine that as long as your not silly with it there shouldn't be a problem...

Sorry to dig this up, thought I'd add it here though rather than start a new thread.
I assume the way they could know was by checking your browser agent string? Would changing that browser agent string on the connected PC to the same and the local phone browser then be enough to 'hide' the tethered connection?
Either way, what happens when Froyo comes out and adds the wifi hotspot functionality...?
i get a months unlimited data for £5 a month on t-mobile pay as you go i use it often for browsing and downloading with the new wifi hotspot
I'm with T-Mobile UK and I have to say that have the most pro-Android tariffs of any of the UK operators, with the most flexible bolt-ons, and the best, cheapest European data roaming charges of the lot. Big thumbs up from me for a thoroughly excellent service! And for me personally in the South East, the data network is amazingly quick, MUCH faster than when I was with o2.
Hi all
I have a contract with o2 that gives me 300mins and unlimited internet that gets used with a nokia slide phone.
My question is if i buy a htc desire outright will it work as normal if i dont change my contract?
cheers in advance
yes, it will work as long as the phone is unlocked... the phone will also have to be on pay as you go so you will pay a lot for the phone itself! but yeah, if you've got the money get it!
or You can buy a Locked Phone
(TO A NETWORK)
and unlock it online,
You can go to somewhere like Ebay
There are people who offer the unlock service,
You Send them the IMIE number, and they will send youa code to unlock your phone and make it Sim Free,
Thats what i did anyway
o2 upgrade from nokia
Hi
I will buy the phone from o2 who gave me an offer to buy at a good price due to the issues i have had recently with them.
Two contracts I have, one i used last year to get my hd2. But now I want to leavve my discounted contract run as is and just buy the phone.
data limit ongoing
what! they just told me data after 500mb will be charged for, even on an unlimited tariff
really?
O2 limiting data transfer to 500mb for a month?!?
Is this true?
O2 stopped offering unlimited data on all their new tariffs, this came into force when the iphone 4 was launched. You're limited to between 500MB and 1GB dependant on the tariff.
If you have an existing unlimited data tariff, you can keep it but any changes will cause the data caps to be enforced.
http://www.o2.co.uk/newdatatariffs
data limit
this sux.
Now mobiles can use data/net they decide to charge for mobile and data used... I welcome ALL that share wifi !!

On my XDA serra I never used the wi-fi and I was sceptical about a 500mb limit, but despite all my use of the gprs/3g service I use on average 180mb per month, and that included many a football match on the radio.
I agree it's a blow, but it's not a crisis.
found a link saying that t mobile are dropping down to 500mb for feb 1st! fortunately im not with t mobile as im on an unlimited internet plan with orange but will others follow suit? having unlimited internet was the reason i didnt end up with a hd7 so important is the internet to me. especially with the amount of data that wp7 needs and will need even more in the future....anyone think this is acceptable???
I agree, it is quite cheeky for them to be reducing the data plans down to 500MB. I've noticed a few providers going that direction, which is kind of silly because especially at a time like this when we are heading towards an internet driven society where having internet access is becoming a necessity, rather than a luxury.
Providers should be increasing the data plans, not reducing them, seeing as the data infrastructure is already in place. In fact they should be investing in improving and increasing bandwidth capabilities. Just seems like they want to suck more money out of consumers...
I do understand they need money to improve and increase bandwidth capabilities, but reducing data plans is not the way to go. Perhaps providing truly unlimited plans at a slightly higher price should be available.
davidebanks, you mention you are on Orange. Just be aware that T-Mobile UK and Orange are now joint companies, and may steer towards combining their tariff policies. You may get a letter telling you that they will be restricting your data plan too!
t mobile and orange are using can now use eachothers networks not sure if thats the same as joining companies. hope not now. so im paying £35 pounds a month for my service which includes unlimited internet. if mine goes down to 500mb, is there anything i can do about this? like cancel contract or something? i just dont get why they are doing it. im sure its for good reason but i own wp7 device so with all its facebook updating all friends stuff and pictures, Bing maps + internet, the Cloud service which microsoft strongly encourage us wp7 to use and then fob us uk customers with mainly 8gb devices....the list goes on......
I really can't understand how a carrier dares to provide a dataplan with less than 1GB in the year 2011 -500MB have been up-to-date in the year 2008!
I hope that they'll lose all users due to this stupid decision.
I have a 3GB dataplan for 2 years now included with my phone-plan and I'm absolutely sure that I'm paying less for this than T-Mobile users are paying for their 500MB-plan.
yes i reckon you are paying less. our `unlimited` internet is usually 1gb, whilst other countries have 3gb `unlimited` I also forgot to mention Zune as well! low memory storage, then ask us to use and pay for cloud storage. then carriers start dropping our monthly limit.
If you have an Android phone, or you say you have an android phone they give you 3GB. I'm sure they'll extend that to WP7 when it becomes more popular (although they don't actually check what phone you have).
And yeah Orange and T-Mobile are now the same network, in the UK at least (T-Mobile and Orange still exist as separate entities in other countries, France, Germany etc). It doesn't mean we'll be seeing Orange tarrifs on T-Mobile though. Infact the reason why they are still called Orange and T-Mobile and not 1 network called Everything Everywhere is because they didn't want to ruin the brand of T-Mobile being "Value" and Orange being "Premium".
@davidebanks: Phone them up, tell them you have an android phone, ask to be upgraded to 3GB and they'll to it at no extra cost.

Yes, that would be considered a rather large change in their T&C's so you could cancel the contract no questions asked. However, for this reason - they are unlikely to apply the 500MB limit to exsiting contracts. More likely than not you will continue on your existing plan until your contract runs out at which time you will be offered a renewal with the new limit in place.
Here in Sweden, I have the "basic" data addon which costs me something like 6 quid a month, that includes 1GB of data at full speed - once I've used the 1GB speed is limited to 120kbps. Additional packages (costing between 12-18 quid) give you 5 and 10 GB of traffic before the speed is limited. There are also offers of truly unlimited plans where you can use as much as you want at full speed (although they are rather pricey).
Hopefully this is not implemented state side, but I would say this is a pretty messed up cut back and you can't download. The high limit before you are throttled on t-mobile is the only reason I stuck with them, if I'm not mistaken its 3gigs. I mean I am paying for the data service I should be able to use it however I like. There only two US carriers that I know of that doesn't have a limit on data and the other one is Sprint. So I guess I might be changing over if they try and pull this over here.
I've got a 500Mb per month plan with orange and samsung omnia 7, i'm adding on a further 500Mb soon though as 500 just isn't enough for WP7, even with my minimal usage i'm still going through at least 150Mb a week. Someone needs to make a Data consumer app, that's if microsoft would let them :/

Actually, I have an unlimited dataplan with Tele2 in Sweden, and I pay 7 £ for that (80kr) a month.

That must be an old plan in that case, as the ones they do these days are fairly similar in both price and limitations to the ones I mentioned above (although Tele2 limits the speed to 64kbps rather than 120).
Most of Tele2's services are however advertised as "fri surf" with a footnote explaining that after X gigabytes speed is limited.
I reckon all of you affected by this change should cut'n'paste the letter found at the Uri below and send to T-Mobile UK.
http://cantankerous.co.uk/?p=499
Looks like exisiting customers will not be affected anymore:
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=DATA_CHANGES
T-Mobile Statement:
“On Monday 10 January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers. Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1 February, to new and upgrading customers only - not existing customers.
There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users."
Lysa Hardy, VP, T-Mobile UK
Information on new data policy:
From 1 February 2011 new and upgrading customers will be given a monthly 500MB data allowance. There will be no charge for those customers exceeding that limit, and those who do will still be able to access important services such as email and web browsing, however file downloading and streaming services will be restricted. Customers will then have the option to increase their monthly Fair Use Policy to 1GB a month by purchasing a Mobile Broadband Booster. This will ensure an improved quality of service for all of our mobile internet users.

Ok, I have my dad persuaded to get a WP7 device but he doesn't want to pay the heavy cost that the current careers charge for a smartphone. He already has service through a different provider on a family plan which is great. But he wants a smartphone without the hefty cost. Are there any plans for smaller carriers like cricket, metro or virgin mobile to receive WP devices. Maybe even some prepaid devices. Sounds like Tango will take advantage of this but when will they expand to others to make affordable to all.

That would be a great way for Microsoft to get some market pentration by seeding 1st Gen devices to these smaller carriers.
In the mean time why not have your dad by an unlocked Gen 1 device one bay. You'd pay prob $200 or for one these days.
Actually on the service he has now they offer the dvp. Thinking about telling him to upgrade phones on his original line.

Thanks but just checked Cincinnati bell wireless and see that they offer the HTC Radar it wasn't offered last week. Checking into the pricing but im also going to look into that prepaid

I picked up a LG Quantum earlier this year for $100 and a Focus for $90 off Craigslist.
He may be able to find something even cheaper now.
HTC 7 Pro is available on US Cellular and Alltel Wireless if that's what you are wondering.
Cool I guess I was uneducated on what carriers provided the WP7, I thought it was just the Top carriers.

First of all, what carrier does he have and how much is he paying for it? He should get the Monthly 4g plan from Tmobile. But all the prepaid plans are useful if the owner already owns a device and plans to keep it for a while, other than that regular 2 years plan is cheaper in a short run for smartphones. I got the Tmobile 4g Plan, pay 49.99 per month, i get unlimited call, text and Edge(2g) Data. (4g is limited to 100mb). If your dad is only going to use the smartphone for GPS, Social Network (linkedin, twitter, facebook), or email, this is the plan for him because i pretty much don't go outside the campus and there are wifi around me pretty much everwhere i go. If he is not crazy about phone calls or Text messages nor data usage, then he could go for $29.99 plan with 1500 minutes/text combined(shared) and 30mb of data limit (This has no Unlimited Edge Data btw.) Tmo has the best plan ever! I wouldn't go with Cricket or any oter prepaid carriers because Tmo is more reliable than them!
Depending on the carrier, you could simply buy a Windows Phone outright for full price.
T-Mobile has the Radar available for $399, and the HD7 for $299. Just unlock the phone, stick a SIM card in there from your carrier (if your carrier is GSM that is), and you should be good to go.
at&t has numerous phones available, and I remember reading an article about them having some Windows Phone available specifically for their prepaid service too, so prices shouldn't be too high.
^ That 49.99 plan is a rip off. 100mb of fake 4g, then the rest is 2g!
I pay 43.54 total every month for unlimited everything. Contract free is the way to be.
My dad has Cincinnati Bell wireless and they offer the Radar now, they had the DVP but I think the Radar would suit him better. My parents already have a family plan with no data, so he pays an extra $30 a month for unlimited data
Bump. I'm android right and am looking to jump to an os with somewhat less bugs and active development (vs something that'll be abandoned at the version it ships with) for daily use.
It'd be great if anyone has any info on upcoming phones valid for use with prepaid plans w/ data.
Didn't know if anyone else got this email, but something interesting I saw from the email I got from T-Mo.
