Goldcard useage.. - Desire General

Hi All,
Just a quick question - appologies if this is in the wrong section
I've made a goldcard for my desire - how many times can I use it? Does it have some kind of counter that 'kills' it after a certian number of uses? I kind of recall reading somewhere that it was 2 but can't find it on xda, modaco and giyf
Much thanks
Mr K

Erm
No?!
It's just a modified boot sector with some "magic numbers" that tells your phone to play nice.
Use it as many times as you want.

Dude - thanks for that! Not sure where I got that from but wanted to be sure Guess I'll keep this 4gb GoldCard to one side
Thanks for the reply

Good plan.
The mistake I made last night was to put it back down on my desk amongst 6 other 2GB cards once I finished rooting with it.
Now I have no idea which one the goldcard image belongs to and will have to do it again.

btw guys, does it matter on what card class it is made? because the original one is class 2 4gb sandisk and i recently bought a 8gb class 4 kingston and would prefer to use the kingston one and make the goldcard on the sandisk one

Doesn't make any difference, BUT you will have to do the WHOLE procedure again for the new card.
Obtain new ID, make a new image online and then hex edit it.
Because the image (goldcard.img) is unique to the card it was created for.

nooooo! Instead cant you load each one into your pc and a hex editor and have a look at the first 170b?? Playing the odds you should hit it soon

If you've already used the Goldcard once to root the phone, I don't think you'll need it again. A couple of days ago I went into Recovery mode and successfully installed a Radio update from my usual non-Goldcarded SD card.
The only time I used my Goldcard was when I went from an unrooted T-Mobile branded ROM to a rooted HTC generic.

not needing it again eh?? That's excellent to know - that and I'm hoping for HSPL soon, man I'd donate to the person who makes that bad boy

Well, I wouldn't say you'll never need it again. Who knows, you might have to unroot your device for repair or something and will have to use it again afterwards.
I'll be keeping hold of mine for now.

Guys, is it true that you don't need a Goldcard to root an unbranded Desire? (I think I read it somewhere but can't find it right now).

I believe so, yes, it should be true.
-------------------------------------
Alias::NeO on HTC Desire

Phone says mine is borked, but I think it works?
is this normal?

Can you be more specific?
-------------------------------------
Alias::NeO on HTC Desire

Well I rooted my unbranded desire last night (now I know the USB issue is resolved!) I had originally used a goldcard to flash an unbranded RRU rom to the phone using the windows software.
I tried to use another 4gb sd card to run the rooting procedure and it failed at step 2 with the red triangle in that adb wouldn't connect so I did the most important thing when doing stuff like this and stopped where I was and gave it some thought - it was then I realised I wasn't using the previous goldcarded sd card, so battery out and other card in, start from step 1 of the rooting process and now I'm all good as they say... which leaves me believing you need a goldcard still to root, I might be wrong but that was the only thing I changed during my rooting path... anyways, all I wanted was apps2sd which I now have so no more flashy flashy for me... well until froyo comes along
Hope that helps

Better Safe than Sorry - Do Not Want to Brick My Phone

I very much want to upgrade my O2 Orbit Rom to either WM6 or the B&B developed by Tom. Right now it apparently does not have the UK WM5 on it; according to the Ebay seller I bought it from I would have to go to the Hong Kong site to get an "official update" but the seller claims it would be better not to do so as people are reporting losing their radio and bluetooth. So I have read and re-read through these threads. I hear stories of phones not working after being flashed so I want to be super cautious. Here is what I think I do:
1. Run USPL and wait 5 - 10 minutes until the computer reboots itself.
2. Run either RUU for Tom's B&B or run RUU_Artemis_O2_UK_3.4.206.2_4.1.13.28_02.67.90_Ship.exe
for the UK WM6 upgrade.
And I should be upgraded, right?
If I end up with huge problems, I think I can revert back to the original factory ROM with the file called:
Arteimg.nbh
But how do I run a nbh file?
Which OS is least likely to cause problems?
Please be gentle with me - I'm a 51 year old woman who is in love with my Orbit and can't live without it so I don't want to take any chances to turn it into a brick. On the other hand, I'd really like to have WM6 and can't get it from the UK d/l site because my S/N matches the Hong Kong site. I live in the US and I'm not sure if I want a Hong Kong OS. I have honestly read through these forums and tried to get all my answers here .... but I just want to double check before I make a big mistake and blow up my phone. Thank you all.

don't worry, just run the USPL tool, after running this tool, it will reboot your phone automatically... Than flash your phone with a WM6 rom or the B&B rom... And thats it... make sure you backup your contacts before you do the flash, cause it will wipe all your contacts from your phone.
If you don't like the rom you flashed, just run USPL again, and flash it with another rom or back to factory rom.
If you've got any probs, just let us know... there is a lot of wizards out here, who are willing to help. You also can pm me anytime. I'm glad to help if I can.
cheers and goodluck

Anyway if you want to see how the Arteimg.nbh is used read this:

You'll need a SD_card to do it.
Good luck, but you wont need it as you seem to have done your homework and as co0lGadget says if you get stuck we'll give you a hand.

You probably do have time USPL take about 3 mins flash of ROM takes about 10-15
However these things are always best to do if you're not in a rush or desperate to get your phone up and running. Also if you put tom's b&b on you'll need about 30 minutes to just play with it

OK, I'm going to do it - soft resetting now. But before I take the plunge, will you wizards please tell me - will I have the least problems with the UK WM6 release (which I found posted here as I can't d/l it from the site) or Tom's B&B which looks very cool but seems to have caused problems for some people. I trust your judgement - please tell me what you think. And btw, even though I'm old I love gadgets and cool tricks, so TouchFlo looks awesome to me, unless it is going to cause problems when installing files etc as I've read here.

WM6 is ok but not that different from WM5 to look at and I guarantee that by tomorrow you'll have wanted to see what tom's rom is like and had to re-flash.
Since using toms rom i've been able to dump a lot of my third party software (mostly stuff from spb) and as you say it's very cool to looks at and will impress all your friends.
OK Tom's it is .......

You probably has the WM5 bug or something. With the WM5 rom, sometimes it will mess up your sd card with folders in strange caracters etc...
But you're right, if you want to do this, and its your first time, you better do it when you're not in the rush... just prepare good, sit back and relax, and the flash will be good ;-)
I'm not sure if I'll be able to get online tonight... cause my internet is shut off since friday, my provider can't tell me where the problem is, and how to fix it... So I hope tonight after work, I'll be able to get online at home. And be able to help you out if needed... so fingers cross...
GoodLuck...

I've been watching this thread and sorry to hi jack the thread. But, this was one of my questions about updating ROMS from original WM5. I haven't gotten the phone yet (P3300), but I want to upgrade it to B&B when I get it. Should I run the patch for the card corruption fix before I do the USPL and ROM flash? Or just go strait to the USPL and ROM update?
I've been reading for a long time but I'm still not very clear on what programs to use to flash and all that. I also want to be able to store my original ROM just in case I want to revert back to OEM. How do I do that?

I'll be using it on T-Mobile, USA. The phone will also be purchased in the US.
BTW, Just to clarify, I'm buying the phone from an online store, so the phone will be unlocked. I'll have to reconfigure it to work with T-Mobile SMS and T-Mobile Web service.
Just run the USPL tool and then the rom of your choice.
If anything does go wrong you can get an original wm5 rom from here
http://rapidshare.com/files/17854890...0_wwe_ship.exe
If you brick your device just go into the bootloader screen and run this it will get you back to wm5 and you can try again.

So I can't "dump" and store my own ROM? I have to download a dumped WM5 OEM from from someone else? I just wanted to make sure that I could put it back exactly the way it was just in case I needed to send it back or ship to HTC for repairs or something.
Also, will they be able to tell that the ROM was flashed and flashed back if I send it in for warranty repairs?

"The SIMUNLOCK"

I purchased this week a t mobile version of HTC artemis. as far as i know t mobile locks their phone, therefore i had searched XDA-DEV.. to find a free unlocking method apparently with no results. the only thing i found is method using a tool called SimLockTool_Artemis_Excalibur. As i understand many people looked and asked for that tool and because i found it somehow i just copy and paste link for those who still looking for it. Because i haven't got the device yet please report in any case of testing it.

This tool had been released by htc and its purpose is to lock your device by changing the IMEI but it also gives you the UNLOCK code for the specific IMEI.
I haven't test the tool yet cause i did not receive my device.
There is one thing that they haven't test yet, it says that you need to use the customized htc card which no one had to that.

nope, i tried with unbranded devices from england and switzerland with the same results as with my orange branded device. the program isnt doing anything. maybe their hardware checks for some code file or something that has to be on the card. or even a special type of hardware... i gave up for now
Can you please tell me which files you copy to your sd card?
Copy only the Artediag and the diagdata. DoNOT copy the cstdata into the card and also remove it from the directory which the .exe file is.
just a thought that i made it may works.
Sorry did not receive my device yet...
it doesnt work. btw, if you read the manual, it says "Insert the HTC customized key card into SD card reader".
further down it says "After this process, you will find a cstdata.dat file into the key card".
i dont think that a normal SD card will work. i can only guess that they delivered those special "key" cards to the providers.

yes, i've read your first post... and my answer is, you should wait for your device so you could try this tool for yourself, since you don't seem to believe those who've said it doesn't work.
and, it's quite funny that you asked me to read your first post, when you're the one who's not really been reading posts in this forum. coz if you've been reading posts yourself, you'll find that this tool has been discusses MANY times in not just one, but several threads as well. and in all of these threads, it's been said that NOBODY got this tool to work. and starting another thread doesn't change that.
@redski Maybe all this you saying is due to the fact that i haven't got my device yet and not test the tool my self. I really need to hope that there is a method to unlock artemis, i do not care about the money 30 dollars in our days is not enough to buy cigarettes , i just like to it my self. About what you said that i do not read the post in this forum, thats not true, see how many post i have and i am a member almost a year now. I never post a thread to resolve an issue that i have without research.
we would all be happy if you find a way to make this work (once you get your device). i personally wont further try it until i see really new facts. there are highly competent people in this forum who tried this with no success. who would i be if i'd think i can make it run

Neon400 SuperCID Guide

I've been looking for a HardSPL for my CDMA Touch Dual (Neon400/P5310) for a while and it doesn't look like it's coming. It seems that there is nobody skilled enough with access to the phone to unlock it.
I have access to the phone, and I have some tech skills, just not in this particular department.
Can anybody point me to a guide for unlocking the CID on phones so that I can start learning how to do this? Otherwise, can somebody guide me or give me some tips on how to begin?
I would be greatly appreciative.
Unfortunatly the NEON400 CDMA is the bastard child of a Nike and a Diamond on a hot drunken night.
Since this phone is really only available in Canada to Telus and Bell (I've also heard Asia but can't confirm), that really limits the number of developers who can work on it.
Hang in there buddy and keep searching (which so far I've done weekly without any results)
Did you try Goldcard? If it works, you'll be able to flash official ROMs for other CIDs (if any are available).

Could you explain Goldcard a little more? I haven't heard of it. Wait, is it a SIM card thing? the NEON400 is a CDMA phone.
Check the wiki; I've never used one myself, but it's some sort of patch you put on your sd card that allows you to flash a stock rom from another carrier off of your sd card. You need to use QMAT or something like that to make the gold card. Just do some searching, but it may not be all that straightforward (big surprise, huh?).

Yeah, I looked into it and I have downloaded QMAT. I feel that I'm in WAAAY over my head here.
Also, I don't want a stock ROM, I want a custom ROM.

You pretty much have to be a hacker extraordinaire to write a hard spl. Just get the gold card to work and live with a stock rom. A stock HTC would probably be fine; I don't think that they are loaded with bloatware the way carrier roms are.

I have just purchased a P5310 on EBAY
HTC appears to have a generic rom but requires a SN to access it (which i dont have yet)
if it is available please post it here.

best way to root?

after some research unrevoked3 seems to be the easiest way to root my HTC Desire.
but there are no instructions on how to use it... i know you just download the software and install the drivers etc... but i mean what state does it leave my phone in?
will it have all of its text messages saved, settings saved, etc...
will my sd card be wiped completely should i back it up? should i buy a cheap one to root it with etc...
i know 2.3 is coming out soon for HTC Desire but my phones branded with vodafone. should i just debrand it and wait for an offical update?
ive been wanting to root my phone for a while but ive got no idea which roms are best or anything.
how do i back up my sd card? how do i save my texts to the sd card for back up?
any help will be appreciated thanks.
Hi welcome to the site. There is a wealth of information in these forums and sometimes it is hard to single out exactly what you are looking for. Read this to start and then ask some specific questions. Seek much advice before rooting yourself.
i was there 3 months ago and now i flash and customise with reckless abandonment!
Unrevoked3 is definitely the easiest way. You can find quick guide for this method in Cyanogenmod wiki 'Full Update Guide' (google it)...
hi , just follow these vids , it makes it really easy

thanks guys, ive been wanting to root for ages as well but i fininally decided to do it recently
right after trying to use unrevoke3 it came up with a write error. basically saying it cant write the new file.
after more search it is because there isnt enough room. after i deleted a few apps i had 70mb free phone memory and 8gb free sd card memory.

right after trying to use unrevoke3 it came up with a write error. basically saying it cant write the new file.
after more search it is because there isnt enough room. after i deleted a few apps i had 70mb free phone memory and 8gb free sd card memory.

No. You might do yourself a favor by creating a goldcard and keeping it safe.

SIM Card question

Hello. i am not new at all per say but have just acquired a Inc 2 couple of days ago. felt like i got a fairly good deal however the sd card was removed along with the SIM card. i feel that i know the answer to my question but i prefer safe than sorry. i realize the SIM is for global use only (or as i am told), is there any reason why i should acquire one before starting the process of downgrading, rooting, etc.
sorry if i have missed this but i did search. thanks in advance.

You can always buy one on eBay for less than 5 dollars if you ever need one.

Many ROMs that are posted here and elsewhere on the net will be either based on AOSP or be a port from a phone that doesn't have SIM capable function.
You need to find a ROM that is close to stock as possible yet has most of the bloat removed.
Ignore the words fully tested and AOSP and MIUI, az those most likely are ported half baked fashion ROMs.
If you need stock function stick with stock based ROMs.
If you just want to play purdy, the field is wide open.
Enjoy ..
Im running skyrider zeus 1.3 and i can see the simcard.
