Email problem - Desire General

I am trying to set up my Sky email account with the mail app on the Desire. I have correctly put in all the required details, everything in the settings appears to be fine but when i try and send an email it appears to be coming from my googlemail account and not Sky.
Any ideas why?

All the setting appear to be fine and have been accepted.

Are you sure you're not using the Gmail client, rather than HTC mail?

Yeah, i'm using the mail app that comes built in with the phone, defo not the google mail one with the red "M" on it.

Anyone else got any ideas please?

I suggest that a factory reset and setting up again from scratch may help. I know of no reason why HTC Mail should be using your GMail account when it is not set up to do so, so I'm wondering if you entered something in the past and there's still remnants of the setup kicking about.
Regards,
Dave

Do you have a Googlemail account setup on the phone? I'm gonna try with my Sky email account and see what happens...
EDIT: Right, worked fine. Try this...
1. Start new account
2. Select POPs
3. Use manual config
4. Set incoming details correctly (e.g. pop3 server: pop.tools.sky.com, username: [email protected], password, SSL, port 995)
5. Set outgoing correctly (e.g. smtp server: smtp.tools.sky.com, username: [email protected], password, SSL, 465)
6. Set account name/display name
Sent a test email and came from my Sky.com address

I have tried several times now and its still saying my emails have been sent from my googlemail account?
I did set it up no problems when i first got the phone however i deleted the account from my phone as i wasn't really using it.
So now when i set up my Sky account again it process fine and everything appears to be in order until i try and sent a email.

Can't help then as it works fine on my phone - must some other settings taking over...

I have a fair few paid apps on there, is there anyway of installing them again without charge if i was to do a factory reset?

When you go into the market and go to your downloads they should be there again to download...I can't 100% confirm this, though

Yes, this is correct. Paid apps aren't a problem because as long as you set up your phone again with the same google account that you used to purchase your apps, they will always appear as purchased and ready to download again in your Market downloads.
It's a pity you can't do the same with free apps, but if you set up AppBrain (see http://www.appbrain.com/) you can have these remembered too.
Regards,
Dave

Ok thanks for your help guys!

Download 'App Manager' from the market (it's free) and you can backup your apps to SD card and reinstall them when ready - no more downloading (don't think it works for paid apps but not tried)

The problem with most app managers/backup programs is that they usually don't restore market links, so whilst you can quickly and easily reinstall the apps, you don't get notifications about updates from the market.

Dave

Hotmail via mail app

so ok. I have my new lovely desire. But one problem. I added my new email address to the Mail aip. It works but i can receive email. Instead I just get the message: "This is an old news letter and has expired".
how can i fix this?
Use the following settings
pop 3 address: pop3.live.com
enable SSL
smtp add: smtp.live.com
enable TLS
job done
Bump!
I've run into the same problem. Above posted settings don't work for me, when manually inserting them. Same goes for auto-detected settings after filling in my hotmail address and password.
When I change the app's settings to download the previous X amount of emails instead of past X amount of days, emails do get downloaded. The problem here, however, is that these are the very first emails I received, dating from the year 2000 and marked as "unread". When going through them to mark them as "read" again, new "unread" messages won't get through and the very first emails are kept.
Very strange problem that only affects, as far as I know, a minimal amount of users.
I've tried deleting the account, restarting and even a hard-reset to no avail.
Furthermore, I've contacted microsoft and htc. Microsoft's answer was rubbish, stating I should try the settings they provided in the email, which were the exact same settings I told them I had already used... Still waiting for HTC's response.
PS: Other mail accounts work fine btw.
Anyone experiencing the same problem?
I'm gonna go ahead and try this again. Bump, please help!
Just tried with these settings and it worked for me:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes USE TLS
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example [email protected]
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes USE TLS
Important things to note are in red. Hope that helps
Thanks for the reply, but I already had those settings (everyone assumes I got them wrong ). Anyway, I solved it this afternoon after a lot of trial and error...

I did two things to get it to work. Perhaps one would suffice, but I couldnt be bothered to check which one fixed the problem. Here's what I did:
- Somewhere in the settings you can link your hotmail to your live account. I did that.
- I had a huge amount of emails in my inbox. I moved like half of them to a new folder.
Afterwards, the mail app synced without a problem.
Good luck!

Gmail Exchange ActiveSync - Same as IMAP?

After trying various email options with my Desire, using Exchange ActiveSync protocol between Gmail and the standard mail app seems the best of several poor options. It isn't working quite as I expected though. It seems to be similar to IMAP in the way it displays the correct emails in various folders as a copy of what's in gmail on the web. However, it only copies folder contents that I've changed by other means (PC or webmail). If I move, create or delete emails using the mail app, that isn't then reflected in my account in the web.
Is this just the way it is supposed to be or should it work the same as IMAP, and if so, why isn't it? Any suggestions appreciated.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I use exchange with the HTC Mail application with my Google account as well. When I move or delete messages, they get deleted on gmail.com in 2-3 seconds.
Maybe something is wrong with your configuration, you sure you have it on push? Mail app -> Settings -> Send/Receive -> Push

Thanks for replying. I'm glad it works ok for you, as it gives me some hope.
Yes I do have it set to push. I also have the domain set to Google and my username set as my email address, and SSL is on.
Are you in the UK? I am, and my email address is therefore googlemail rather than gmail, so I'm wondering if my login details should be also. I'll give that a go now and see if it makes any difference.
[Edit] I've tried changing the domain of my username to gmail instead of googlemail, but it wouldn't create the account. So I'm stuck with what else to try.
Well somehow it now works fine. The only difference is that my email address (not my username) now has the gmail domain and not googlemail. I had to re-create the account to change the settings, so either there was something wrong that resolved itself when I did that, or the difference in the email address makes a difference.
Hopefully that may help someone else.
Well now it isn't working again. Is nobody else having problems with their Desire and Google Exchange?
Here are my settings, and as I said works perfectly on my unbranded desire.
Email address: *******@gmail.com
Server address: m.google.com
Domain: google.com
username: *******gmail.com
CHECKED - This server requires SSL
In my account sync settings I'm syncing MAIL + Calendar.
Just for the record, I'm not using a task killer, which could possibly interfere?

It gave me an error when I tried to set my username to @gmail - Probably because I'm in the UK where Googlemail is used rather than gmail. Although if you wrote to me using @gmail, I'd still get it. So it's all a bit confusing. Besides, it did all work yesterday. I don't have the domain set the same as you, I just have "google" as I read elsewhere that was correct, even though that alone isn't actually a domain.
I wish I could edit these settings without deleting then re-creating the account, but there doesn't seem to be a way to. I'll do that again though to match your settings, if it lets me.
I'm not using a task killer by the way.
Tried using my Googlemaill account and says it can't do it - bit annoying but I'm happy with the gmail app tbh, just thought I'd try it out!

If you use @gmail as your username, it'll probably 'half' work. Mine is back up but it still isn't working properly. I'm not sure if it's better than using the Google mail app or not now, as I've gone between that and the mail app and K-9 so many times now, I forget what was wrong with each one. LOL. I think one of the major issues with the Gmail app is lack of copy/paste.
I rarely send email, I just have it to receive and then use my PC to get any attachments if needed...I'll stick with it for now!
I've found something similar. If I delete an e-mail on Webmail or IMAP (using Windows Live Mail) it doesn't disappear on the HTC Mail App (using Gmail Exchange ActiveSync). I have to delete it manually again. I've started a thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676890
Which is odd as both the native Gmail App and IMAP (using the same HTC Mail App) do.

You can, just go to "More" and then "Settings" in the HTC Mail App or click on Exchange in "Accounts and Sync". You can change it all there, except for the domain (oddly that seems to be only available when you first create the account). Which incidentally, Google say you should leave it blank:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
This is the Windows Mobile instructions but Google intend you use this feature primarily on Windows Mobile handhelds.

HTC mail app supports exchange push(Atleast on the Froyo version). P.S., gmail uses exchange for pushing e-mails(Its just standard exchange that is used by gmail).
And does Windows live mail support exchange activesync? When I stopped using it it only had POP3.
Yes it does, from August 2010, officially.
Use the following configuration -
Server: m.hotmail.com
Username: full email address
Domain: Leave this blank
SSL: Enable this
Certificate: Accept the SSL certificate when prompted
Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks: All can be enabled
Enjoy

Does not work for me either. I've also tried putting "\" before domain/username like some have suggested. Has anyone succesfully got it to work with the Desire and the stock mail app? I've read some have got it to work with Droid, touchdown, stock Android 2.2 Mail app, etc. but nothing about the Desire.
I just tried with my Hotmail account and it just worked fine on my Desire.
I am giving a walk-through this time ok? I am using AOSP build, if you are using sense, follow accordingly.
1. Go to the Launcher screen
2. Tap on "Email" icon
3. Press Menu
4. Add account
5. Enter full Email address: [email protected] or [email protected]
6. Enter password
7. Tap Manual Setup
8. Choose Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
9. Domain\Username: your full email address (example: [email protected] or [email protected]). DO NOT USE "\" in front of the email address. You are not in any Exchange server domain.
10. Your password is already filled in from Step 6, ignore it
11. Server: m.hotmail.com
12. Use Secure connection (SSL) - Yes
13. Accept all SSL Certificates - Yes
14. Tap Next
You should see a checking server settings message ... mine took around 3 seconds.
Account options window
Email Checking Frequency - Automatic (Push) [<- that is the whole reason you wanted this, right?]
Amount to sync - your choice
rest of the four option - totally your choice
Tap Next
Choose account color - your choice
Tap Next
Account Name: Hotmail or WLM (or whatever you want)
Tap Next
DONE!
If there's any question, let me know
Thanks for the walk-through.

Yes sh500 is right. It is a known HTC Mail issue with Hotmail. It just won't work
My office Exchange Mail works just fine.
And I found another thing. HTC Mail accepts only one Exchange mail.
Well, I was on AOSP build, push Hotmail works like charm, along with Google Apps push mail and my office Exchange mail.

Hotmail Activesync Working in 3.70!

Awesome news folks. Hotmail activesync finally works for me here on EVO 3.70 email program. Email/Contacts/Calendar working fine. Thank goodness. Now all we need is multiple exchange support and we will finally be up to par.

Set SSL on and accept all ssl certs.
Working great for me. Slow to download contacts at first but works fine afterwards.
Does it push or just periodically check for new mail?

Didn't work for me, I still get the failed to create account error. This is getting pretty annoying. I've seen some other posts that people have had success with using another email client besides the stock one so I guess it's time to look around for a third party email app.

Use the Hotmail app instead then, this support push notifications.
I use and would recommend "Touch down for smart phones" it is almost instant push notifications and seems to work very well i have been using it for 18 months now. The other option is to set up your hotmail to forward masks to your gmail account, this also works well.

In order to get true push email + IMAP for HOTMAIL use this settings:
Incoming settings:
Enter your email account and password Do no hit next, instead click Manual Setup Chose Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
In the Domain\Username field: delete everything and enter your email address In the Server field: enter m.hotmail.com Keep the box ticked for 'Use secure connection (SSL)' and keep the box unticked for 'Accept all SSL certificates'

The thing is, I only get my emails when I click 'refresh' in the app. I sent myself an email from the PC and it wasn't pushed to the phone. Not sure were I'm going wrong. In the settings I have 'push mail' selected on peak & off peak. I have the data connection on. Does anyone have any idea what I need to change in the settings?
Anyone?
Using the email app or the Hotmail account in Account & Sync?
The email app wouldn't update for me either, and i've read a few posts from people with the same problem.
I just use the Hotmail Account to auto sync

Thanks for the reply. I managed to sort it out (with help from wnp_79). I downloaded the stock Android app and set up my account. The emails are pushed to the handset now.
Nae bother. So you can download the stock app from the Market? I'm guessing its just called Mail? It would be better to have that working than Mail and Hotmail both trying to sync, for battery life.
No the app is not on the market.
Here is the application.
Guide on how to set-up Hotmail manually on it. (Just in case)
Hope this helps.
Cheers dude
