ok quick question. i know the evo can output in hd via the micro hdmi cable, but researching it appears its limited to just a few forms of media (vids, pics, ect.)
my question for anyone who has a evo is: is there an option to output via the usb like the incredible? i have the cable already from my at&t fuse which suported tv out though usb.
i know this way would not be high def but at least i can see everything thats on my cell phone creen which would be handy in some situations.
if this is not available by defult is it possible the phone suports it nativly (as it is so similar to the incredible) and just a matter of installing an app/program from the incredible to the evo? (sorry if its a silly question but coming from windows mobile and the fuse it was just that easy installing the fm radio app)
thanks in advance!

your cable won't work as the evo is micro usb. Not sure if the incredible cable would work though.
There is an app for winmo called mymobiler that allowed you to do what you are asking.
I'm gonna google to see if there is anything android wise that will do the same thing.
......hold please......

There's no way that headphone adapter will work with your EVO. The Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2, Diamonds, Fuzes, and anything in between do not have MiniUSB ports on the bottom. They are MiniUSB compatible, but they are very very proprietary. Look on the bottom of your Fuze or look at the adapter and you'll see something that is totally screwed up. The reason sound/video work coming out of that port is because it's HTC's ExtUSB port. It has (I think) 9 extra pins for sound/video. Soooo... you could try the Incredible's video cable, but you're SOL when it comes to the adapter for your Fuze.
Hope that clears it up a little.

nope dosent. you see the fuze my have a proprietary port on the bottom of the device but you CAN plug in a mini usb plug (male) into it you can NOT plug your htc headphones (male plug) into a normal usb input (female port.)
i know i plug standard mini usb adapters in all the time for chrarging my fuze off of my laptop when no car charger or wall outlet is available.
i also know the tv out cable i have now is an off brand genaric usb to rca and it works just fine noextra pins in the mini usb jack.
i also know i have the mini usb to micro usb adapter for it.

I did a search and didn't see anything about this, so I'll post my question.
Has anyone gotten this to work? I plugged in my a/v cable (3.5mm to RCA) into the adapter that came with the TP2, and it into the TP2 usb port, then connected the RCA ends to my TV and when I tried to start the TV out under settings, it said I needed the TV Out cable.
I couldn't find anything in the provided documentation about this (surprise). I don't have the HTC cable, nor do I have the iphone/ipod cable, but I can't believe that this one would be any different from the icrap one, it's a freaking standard.
Any one?
The video out is actually the usb port. You need to buy a cable that is usb to composite
If your cable is iPod compatible, you should be able to install this get TV Out to work.
this is what i bought and it works great with my sprint tp2 http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=179148
I dont understand what you mean by iPod compatible?
Dont I need HTC's special USB video cable? Does anybody have a wireing schematic on that so I can make one? I have a million 3.5mm to rca cables lying around but that wont work...

From my understanding (my tilt2 hasn't come yet, so I can't confirm) you should have an adapter that comes with your device that converts the ext-USB into a 3.5 mm headphone jack. You can plug an HTC 3.5mm to RCA cable in that jack, or put an iPod compatible RCA cable (uses the same pinouts as HTC's cable and is essentially identical, but cheaper) and change HKLM\Software\HTC\H2W\TVOutCableIn to "1" in the registry in order to get it working. The software I linked to should do this automatically, so you don't have to do that each time. However, I don't know if this works on the TP2 since I don't have mine yet.
My touch pro 2 didnt come with that. I actually have a usb jack, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. It is the Verizon version.
Ok, I followed the instructions on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CLPjcImHAg&feature=fvw
I did both reg hack changing 0 to 1, as well as trying the icon under settings. The reg hack did bring up the screen, but nothing was outputted to the TV. I can't believe my 3.5mm -> RCA cable is any different than an "ipod compatible" one, it has the 4 bands on the 3.5mm jack and 3 RCAs for audio (l/r) and video. Is there something I'm missing? I don't want to buy the HTC usb/rca cable, and would be pretty upset if I got it and it still didn't work.
i tried it with my camcorder cable and the extusb adapter supplied with my phone. no luck. my camcorder cable only has 3 bands. does this make a difference? i have literally hundreds of cables. i'll have to search and try out a few others. or i'll just buy the official one on ebay if necessary.
I attempted this tonite. Did not work.
Sprint TP2
Apple iBook AV cable - 3.5mm -> 3way RCA yel, red, white
HTC EXTusb adapter.
tried 2 different cabs (enabletvout.cab and nuetvout-102-v1) as well as just changing the reg value to 1.
tried changing around the rca cables to the video input on tv..
I was able to get the tv out options to display on the phone, but NOTHING ever went out to the TV.
I hear people are having success with the oficial HTC tp2 tv out cable, which is a miniUSB -> 3 way rca.
Any success using the 3.5mm jack on a sprint tp2 ?
I had some luck with a cable I had but found that I needed to use the Red RCA as my video and the Yellow and White as audio.

i was all excited but that didnt work for me.
I had to purchase the extusb to av jack like this one.
AV Cable Works great.
You don't need to install the TV out cab. It will auto pop up when the cable is inserted. Most roms have this built in. The Tilt 2 stock rom does.
I used the original HTC OEM multi adapter with my 3.5mm RCA cable after prying it open and cutting the blue cable, which enables Tv out on my Tilt 2, but disables headphone use which is why im putting a switch in there.
well, I purchased the USB to video output cable and it workd fine.. HOWEVER only certain program work.. for instance, I wanted to see if I could watch sprint TV using the TV out and it tells me it can not run wth tv out. is there any way to do this??
Do a search on PPCGeeks.com forums for "How did you get the tv out/video out to work on the touch pro 2." I had to remove/cut the blue wire from the multi-adapter which came w/ my TP2. Hook up a standard 3.5mm jack to composite cable that came with my camcorder. Then I was able to get audio and video working on my 47" TV. No other software was required. The only thing is, you have to swap the yellow cable with the red. Red now provides the video signal. Otherwise, everything else works great.
Credit goes to the original poster in PPCGeeks.com. I would have provided a link to the instructions, but since I'm still new on this site, my posting privileges are still limited. Good luck everyone. I hope this was the answer you were looking for.

This is another option for those who do not wish to purchase the $20 - $25 USB to composite cables for the video outputs. Most of us received the USB multi-port device with our TP2. But by just cutting the blue wire from that device, you can have video output with a standard 3.5mm to composite cable (Red, white, yellow). Some of us may have this cable lying around the house. It usually comes with camcorders. If not, many places sell these standard cables for about $2 to $5. It's just information for those who wish to spend as little money as possible. That's all. Good luck.
All the video cables I find have the regular mini usb data cable port and not the different HTC mini usb port. Are there video cables with the HTC usb port?
To clarify, the part that plugs into the phone is the HTC plug, but the plug for the charger midway down the cable is the plug I'm referring to. Where can I find one with the HTC usb plug instead of the mini usb?

I cannot find a USB to composite cable anywhere on the net. I don't think that it would even work with the TP2 video out capabilities.
I have googled for quite a while, and have not found the pinout on the microUSB port. I really want to know if there is any way to get analog output from that port like my old G1. It would be nice to have one port for charging and audio (for cars, docks, and boomboxes).

ok, I am just curious, but you dont want to use the audio output on the top of the phone just to have an all in one solution, correct? Because I have no clue what would happen hooking that adapter up, curious though.
It has to be built into the port as well as the software to control it. I've got my money on it not working, since it's not supported by the phone. HTC ditched the USB headphones a while back because everyone complained about having to use special headphones and adapters, hence why they all have standard headphone jacks now.

Exactly. Having a dock or boombox that would be plug and play would be nice. I'm actually considering something for the car that would replace a head unit. Maybe there would be a way to snag the digital audio from the HDMI port? Digging continues.
Worse case scenario, I use the USB port for power and bluetooth the audio.
I dont think it is possible through hdmi without a digital to analog converter, which are rather expensive. The hdmi out is pure digital goodness.

HTC ExtUSB Micro?
I am looking for the same info.
Is the micro usb port on the evo just a standard 5 pin only?
The mini usb on the hero was the non-standard HTC ExtUSB with 11 pins. I loved this because I could make my own docks that included power and audio with only one plug.
Maybe the HTC micro b is analogous? HTC ExtUSB Micro?
I dont think so, it's only 5 pins. And I think the only reason HTC had the 11 pin was to provide the proper support for audio out. Since the evo has a 3.5 mm I dont think it is even possible to do that.

And how exactly do you intend to convert the HDMI to a digital RCA or TOSLINKi nterface as that box requires? Oh, another $50+ box? Yeah, that's what I thought. So, $100 or a cable that looks "silly". I know where my money would go...
The Samsung Fascinate has this audio/usb option. Their docking station has a micro-usb plug and then a USB (power) jack and a standard audio jack out. So it doesn't require any special decoder, there must be audio out pins just like in the iPhone/iTouch?
Take a peek at this photo of an Evo's circuit board. Specifically, the solder points for the microUSB port (including the ground/anchor points):
http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/22dlA5ZuptWCyvTX.huge (from http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo-4G-Teardown/2979/1 )
Count 'em. Eleven, just like extUSB on the Hero & other HTC phones. Looks like the Evo has what could legitimately be called a "HTC micro-extUSB" port, and not merely a standard "micro-USB" port.
Now... good luck trying to find a CABLE with all 11 contacts and wires on it. If it exists, Digikey probably has them... but god only knows where that needle might be in their million-part haystack (anyone who's ever tried finding a specific connector, even a common one, at digikey.com if you don't know its exact OEM part number knows the joy I'm describing...)
Chances are, there's a (~2.7v) serial UART sitting on two of those pins, too.

Nope. It's definitely the Micro USB connector. I know this is an old thread, but I've been trying to do some research on this port in hopes of hacking my own car dock.
I've found some additional information on this Micro ExtUSB™ port. The HTC Incredible uses it for its TV Out port. See this Thread on AndroidForums. There's even a special cable for the Incredible at HTCPedia. I'm very tempted to buy the cable to use it as a sort of breakout box to experiment with this port.

I believe your looking at the micro hdmi port, the usb is indeed 5 pins.
I'm pretty certain it's just a standard 5-pin MicroUSB port. Just shining a flashlight into the port, I only see 5 pins.
It would be really nice if there was a standard connector that supported power, USB, audio, and some sort of control bus. The Apple dock connector is a bit big, but it allows for a lot more than microUSB can do. Though I guess it could be done over USB if there was a standard for it.
I have an adapter for my Hero that plugs into the USB port on the phone and has an audio port on the adapter. This lets me plug it into my car without running a second wire from the top 3.5mm port. Does the EVO have something similar?

Plug it into the EVO and see if it works... Micro USB on both right? Any associated software should run on EVO also unless it doesn't like Froyo.
the hero and the evo have different usb plugs the hero is a mini and the evo is a micro i wish they were both mini personally i like it better.
The evo doesnt support audio out from the usb port, you have to use the headphone port.
The Hero, Touch Pro 2, and perhaps some other HTC phones used a modified mini USB port called mini EXT-USB. It had a few extra pins in it for audio. Straight up mini USB didn't support audio output either. With the switch to micro-usb, they've gone with straight up micro USB. There's no audio output there.
As much as I hate Apple with all their proprietary stuff (among other issues), the dock connector does allow some useful functions that USB can't.
Though if the Bluetooth A2DP profile on the Evo didn't sound like absolute **** (aside from CM), it'd be a nice way to stick with one cable if you need to charge, and none if you don't.
Anyone know where one can be brought? also why have I read stuff about the s2 having mini usb? it doesn't it has the same propriety connector as the galaxy s.
It's MHL. It's the supposed new 'standard' for connectivity. I think most devices are using that connection nowadays. Last I heard was Clove saying the MHL adapters won't be out until June.

I can't find any evidence that it did.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link
It's the new standard, but that doesn't mean older devices support it. The SGS2 is one of the first AFAIK
But nothing on the market will currently work? HDMI out from a mobile is just supercool!
I have both an sgs1 and sgs 2, my charger fits the micro usb (the only i/o connector) on the phones, perfectly
The connectors should be the same on the S1 and S2, but only the S2 is MHL compatible.
I think MHL can use any 5 pin connector to send an HDMI signal while receiving power for charging.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to use the MHL HDMI out and USB at the same time, but I hope this is possible.
I'm also guessing that the adaptor will need to be a clever one with circuitry rather than a passive adaptor. Does anyone know if this will definitely be the case, and if so I'd imagine it'll have cost implications! Hope I'm wrong and a passive adaptor is possible
Coming from a LG Optimus 2x, that came with a Micro USB ---> HDMI cable. These are available from Ebay for a GBP 10 - would these work?
Yea guessing its just MHL compatible as the old port was usb compatible. Thats annoying, with all the talk of this new standard usb-hdmi port I was assuming it would use a standard connector and not a proprietary one.
It stupid really if all manufacturers used the same connector we wouldn't have to have multiple chargers/docks/cables
You can't use the USB port for MHL and USB functions at the same time, this is confirmed (if you search for MHL at youTube there is a great video with a person from the MHL consortium explaining it).
To badasschris: this isn't a proprietary port. Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, Toshiba, and quite a few other partners are involved with it, it seems likely to become the standard for mobile devices (iPhone aside, I am sure Apply will continue to push their proprietary ports).

Are you absolutely sure it isnt proprietary? Why I am getting confused is because it has the same port as the galaxy s1 and I heard nothing about that being a standard port and you always have to buy a samsung charger not a [standard port] charger e.g. mini usb charger for any devices which have mini usb. So you are saying at some point the other manufactorers will have the same port and I will be able to use my galaxy s charger to charge them?
Galaxy S is a standard micro USB port, and lacks the MHL connection, its not proprietary at all, I use several non-Samsung cables to charge the phone in my car and from PCs. Most manufacturers, Apple excluded, use micro USB charging now.
The port in the Galaxy SII is not the same as the Galaxy S, as it has MHL connectivity in addition, but its function as a micro USB port for mass memory and charging is perfectly standard, and doesn't require special cables or connectors of any kind.

That sucks. I was hoping to look into making a tablet dock that used a USB capacitive touch screen & HDMI output for the screen.
A laptop dock using Bluetooth for the keyboard and HDMI for the screen would still be possible, or a tablet that used Bluetooth for the touch-screen.
This phone is powerful - it's annoying not to be able to use the hardware for more than just a phone.
I reckon Motorola is thinking along the right lines with the Atrix, and I hoped other manufacturers would be too, but this combined port indicates Samsung are probably not.

Plus you have the added fact that samsung like to mess with bluetooth meaning many devices wont work with it. I really hope the bluetooth situation gets fixed somehow as this device paired with a screen and a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and game pad gives you a portable computer / games console. without it its just an amazing phone
This should work perfectly with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SGSI does. It should also work with a Zeemote, unfortunately it doesn't have enough buttons to be that good for using in emulators.
I can confirm that the igo stowaway bluetooth keyboard works fine w/the SGS2 in case anyone's curious

I'm looking for something simple. Just drop it on a dock and go.
IPhones have countless docks, my pre has the touchstone.
I suppose I could just connect through Bluetooth for audio and plug in a charging cable in the meantime until that GSM car dock comes out.

There's no way for it to work on a Samsung phone because those old mini USB slots on those HTC phones are proprietary 11-pin ExtUSB ports. Normal USB mini/micro only has 5 pins. HTC wanted to be cool and add extra pins to the USB port so that they wouldn't have to add a headphone jack to the phone. To my understanding, this was unpopular because you had to buy extra hardware just to get a headset working.
