friends stream doesnt update under low storage - Desire General

Basically, my desire seems to constantly be suffering from low storage issues due the desires complete inability to install apps to the SD card ... and i only have about 6 apps installed (bring in Freya!!)
I have a cache cleaner but that doesnt free up enough space
anyway, the problem is that the friend stream widget i have on one of my homepages doesnt update when the phone has low storage...has anyone else seen this or know how to fix it?

Yep, I had the same issue a few days ago. At first I was confused as all other data services were working fine, Facebook was also working fine using the Android app.
Had to remove a few apps and Friends Stream starting working again. Phone storage was down to 12 MB; it's been at roughly 16MB since then.

this really sux, ive uninstalled everything i dont really use and still only got 13 or sometimes 14mb left and cant get it above 15.
was there any QA done on this phone at all? Ive got a background in QA and i find it so hard to think that testers could miss this many simple bugs on a phone

irt sucks right? in the same boat now.... lame... some things about this phone (which I love) are starting to really annoy me.
inability to shut down without pulling the battery out. DUH
inability to push gmail or friendstream due to low space DUH

Maybe try holding the button on the top for a while then a menu will pop up which will allow you to shut down

Serious memory leaks on the Dash

My Dash suffers from serious memory leaks. Just looked at task manager (because no apps would run due to low memory) and it has just 200kb available.
I have no apps installed on the device itself.
Shutting down all programs returns just 500kb.
If I reboot the phone I get 21,000kb available, but give it time and it will all have leaked away again.
I've had many different WM smartphones and they have never done this.
A great product with buggy software
Odd... this isn't an issue on my WM6 Dash...

Strange. Others are saying the same thing http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=255238&hl=memory (toward bottom of page).
I find that even if I quit all programs using task manager I am not returned to the same amount of memory as when I first boot up. Sometimes it can be as low as half or a quarter.
Guess I'm lucky. I disabled a couple things in the startup folder, MyFav and the voice recognition program, things became a lot zippier after that.

ya i have the same problem ( i de-activated myfaves and voice command) and when i boot up i have about 21K of free memory. a little while later i re-check my memory and its around 18K! towards end of day, even with all programs closed through task manager, i only have about 9K left. i dunno, its ridiculous. now i always turn it off for a few minutes at night, ha but then i run the risk of getting that endless boot up loop....

I also have this problem. One of the reasons I don't like Windows Mobile.
I wonder if it is leaking from IE. My Temporary Internet Folder never gets higher than a few k. On WM5 this could be several megs in size.
Anyone else getting memory problem on the WM6 Dash?
Use Oxios CloseApps...it helps a little
I'm fully resolved to the fact that it's just a combination of an OS that doesn't really manage memory well combined with applications that don't really clean up after themselves well either.
So, to make it through the day, I use Oxios CloseApps throughout the day. It seems to be the best at recouping memory. It's free (bonus!) and is very simple to use. You run it and it tells you how much memory it gained back and then you hit "ok" so it closes. Easy.
I'm also fully resolved that I have to reboot my Dash 1-3 times a day depending on how intensely I'm using it.
Welcome to the world of WinCE/PPC/Windows Mobile/Windows Mobile Smartphone/WM6!
C.
Your home screen plugin can affect your memory usage as well.
I had the same problem with mine which actually led me to return it. It was actually for several reasons, but particularly I felt like I was sitting in front of an old 386 backtracking my steps making sure I don't run out of memory like in Windows 3.1.
For one, I couldn't install the software I wanted to install on it even after registry tweaks and unlocks. The memory leak got a lot worse once I upgraded to WM6. Most of the time after multi-tasking for a bit, my memory stayed around 10MB with ONE application running. If I surfed the internet for 5-10, it usually made the drain even worse by a couple more MB and I had to reboot.
What actually broke the camel's back was when I went to send an MMS to someone and the file was at 356K. No big deal, it gave me the option to resize. Yeah. The resize neverworked the way it was supposed to. It didn't matter how low I picked the options. I picked 160 X XXX with extremely low quality and it would come up with a message telling me "Your message is 356K so it cannot be sent." and plop me right out of the message and I would have to go dig for it on my card again! (Still couldn't resize it though)
I'm very good at managing memory and getting around bugs, but that was just a little too much for a cell phone. Don't get me wrong. I love the phone! I HATE the software/OS! Would've been the perfect phone had it not been for the leaks, even if I couldn't install the software I wanted to!
Wow. I'm not going mad!
They are exactly the same issues as I am having.
maruichan what was the problem like with WM5?

Does it help to stop the memory leaking??
Is it better than oxios?
I don't even look at the free memory- my MDA Mail never slows down or crashes no matter how small the memory gets. I used to constantly check the memory on other devices but for Smartphone it does not seem to matter as much.
When you get a 'problem' with lack of memory it is a problem, otherwise just ignore it...

I think it depends on your perception of lag. I feel my device slows down momentarily sometimes when navigating through long lists and opening some applications as you mention. I thought at first it might be a problem with my device but have since had it replaced (because of dust under the screen not this) but I still notice it the same. I think I just expect everything to be instantaneous given the 1Ghz processor inside but to be honest it doesn't bother me and I imagine most people don't notice any slow down at all.
As an example, just now selecting the option to add the HTC Clock widget to the home screen there is a noticeable pause before it comes up with the options to choose widget style.
I would be interested in how quickly the Photos application loads for people though, it takes a good few seconds for me (around 4 seconds sometimes) to load the summary view with 'camera shots', 'all photos' links etc. I've replaced the memory card to an 8gb Sandisk Ultra as I thought the read speed of the original could be the cause, but it still takes the same time.
None of these things effect the usability of the device in practical terms though.
Market / Weather are possibly lagging due to Network speed rather than phone speed. They have to DL data to the phone.
Others like Email may be refreshing when opened causing lag.
My messages app (Handcent currently) only lags when I have many hundreds of messages saved. But it is noticably better than chomp at handling the same volume of messages.
I find the phone lags when it is installing stuff. And by lag I mean delayed responses to my input.
I also find that certain apps can load up and then cause the phone to stutter. I haven't found out exactly which apps but it's always solved with a soft reset - just turning the phone off and on. Either that or it's forcing the phone to store too much on the SD card.
Maybe I'll find the offending app when I have more time.

Random Restart

So far today, my Evo has reset itself about 4 times. That is within the past hour and a half. I've had it since Monday and had no other issues with it doing this until today. The only app that was added in the past 24hrs was the Wireless Tether for Root app. I don't know what or why this is happening. I've just uninstalled Unrevoked, Superuser Permissions, the Overclock Widget, and the Wireless Tether to see if that is causing the issues. Anyone else have anything similar to this happening?
Also, I changed the "always on mobile data" setting to off yesterday. That increased my battery life dramatically. I was able to leave the phone on for a solid 11hrs with it still having 60% charge left. Then today, before I changed any settings at all, unplugging the phone from the charger for about 2hrs has resulted me in being down to 45% battery. Could mobile data always on being off cause the rebooting issue?
Same thing was happening to me when I unchecked that. Checked it back and all rebooting issues went away.

Since I posted that message I had two more reboots. Just ticked always on mobile data back on and am waiting to see if that stops it...
EDIT: No more reboots since reenabling mobile data always on...weird
I've had the always on data feature turned off since day one to conserve battery life and i had not experienced the random shut offs until yesterday. Since yesterday however my phone has restarted itself no less than 20 times. Several times while I was sleeping so this is defiantly a real problem but I dont think its related to settings. ill be contacting HTC tonight
I have had always data off, ticked it on this morn. And started getting the reset issue...

Random restarts are often indicative of the battery not sitting in properly.
Remove the battery. Scratch up the contacts. Insert back firmly...
I am also having this same issue. I turned my phone off this morning because i wouldn't be using it and then i turned it back on in the afternoon and then my phone just started randomly restarting itself. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It has just been happening all by itself. It has probably happened 10 times in the last 4.5 hours.
I took the battery out for a minute and put it back in to see if it will stop the issue, but i'll have to wait and see. However, when i did turn the phone back on i got a weird pop-up message on the main screen that said something to the effect of, "Operational failure, please use su command." Then it faded away. Anyone know what that means?
As mentioned above, turning always-on mobile back on, took care of my restart issue.

I'm getting the same issue. At first i thought it was ATK, so i uninstalled that. Then I though it was lookout, so I disabled that. But it still keeps happening. I have mobile data off too, but for days, and it hasn't affected it one way or the other.
The odd thing is, I was running xiiLive Lite last night streaming the radio all night, and my phone stayed up the whole time, while plugged in (at least 8 hours).
I don't know what the deal is, but my phone goes about 24-48 hours without a spontaneous reboot, and then it will start doing it 4-6 times a day. Anyone have a good logging tool would be nice, as I'm somewhat new to Android.
Thanks!

my evo is randomly rebooting and I never modified the settings that some of you are talking about. My also gives me random issues where when i try to open an app it will open for a split second and close? I am also having my phone lock up on me several times a day and i have to pull the battery to reboot it! I took it back to the sprint store and they insisted on reloading the software on the phone and it made no difference.... does anyone have any suggestions or similar issues?

I had the apps closing after a split sec too but I found out that it was for apps that didn't play nice with the snapdragon cpu; like the Gameloft game Nova and a few of their other titles.
for me its stock apps like the navigator, video player etc. I am thinking i might have a defective unit.

Yup! That does sound strange! Did you root your phone? I'm rooted and all the stock apps that I've tried, seem to open and work fine.
nope! not rooted, 100% how it was out of the box. Luckily my pre was still active so i video taped it freezing up and stuff so im going to show the tech at the sprint store so hopefully they can order my replacement.
I also have a fully stock phone, some apps installed, but none recently, and yesterday it rebooted itself, twice more today.
I haven't changed the settings mentioned earlier, and haven't done anything I can think of that would cause the rebooting.
I am also having issues where I can't get an IP address on my wireless network, but I'm not sure it's related. I just noticed these 2 problems in the last 2 days, and it's the only thing I can think of that's out of the ordinary from the weeks prior to this happening.
I think I'll take it to Sprint tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Keep us updated on what happens. It seems to take a day or two for symptoms to start, but when they do it goes crazy rebooting!
...more discussion on this issue has been going on here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702379
I'm not a professional android user and don't know much about it yet, but mine's rebooted a few times as well. I haven't rooted my phone but the ONE thing that seemed to have resolved the continuing issue is doing a hard reboot:
Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset
It's been 4 days and hasn't rebooted since.
EDIT: It's been 6 days now and still no reboots.
Angry Apps Eating my RAM!
I think what everyone is missing here that maybe the root of the problem is low memory.
I'm not talking about storage on the SD card. I"m talking about the memory the OS has to run.
I've fought long and hard with this low memory problem seeing as I have owned a g1 for almost 2 years.
THERE IS NO REASON THE EVO SHOULD EVER GET DOWN TO UNDER 30MB OF SYSTEM RAM!
I equate this issue to the same issue many people had with Windows computers and applications that start up in the system tray! We don't need most apps to run in the back ground on start up just in case I want to use it. The few seconds of time it shaves off of starting up the app is not worth the slower OS boot up (applies to Windows mainly) or the major slow downs they cause the OS's to have.
I don't need Sprint TV running on boot!
When I used a clean slate scene I still have all of these same issues. Random reboots, slow OS and apps, ect.
I have no idea why Android would allow that much RAM to be used for background apps. I don't understand why we have no way to see what programs run on boot unless using a 3rd party app.
Most apps are so crappy that they run in the background all the time and have no way to toggle if they run on boot and I'm not talking about apps that modify something all the time I"m talking about apps that ONLY need to be running once you open them. An example would be Swipe, I understand the need for that app to run on boot. It modifies the OS keyboard and would need to be running in order to work correctly when ever you enter any text field that pops up the keyboard for input.
An example of programs that don't need to be running on boot or should at least give you an option to toggle boot start up are; Sprint Navigation, Sprint Updater (No idea what this is for), Updater (Android?), Sprint Zone, doubletwist, SprintTV Widget (I'm on the clean slate profile with NO Widgets), VoiceMail (I use Google Voice, is this needed?), Sprint Football Live (It's not even Football season!), MP3 Store (I have yet to use on the EVO but is running just in case, thx), as well as many others.
I have 35 apps running in the back ground! WTF? Thanks ****ty app devs and bloatware Sprint!
Have fun try to find options for each app and figuring out each service to know what it's tied to so that you can have a phone that it powerful and run smoothly.
It really shouldn't be this hard or as much of a pain...

This is where I am so lost with Android. I read many blogs saying Android does not need a task killer and using one will only make your system slow down. Well I tried one anyway because it's in my Windows Mobile nature to do so (old habits....). I noticed that I too had 35 or so apps running in the background and I thought that doesn't sound good, I wanna kill them all. But then what Android pros keep telling me is to let them be and that the OS will kill them as needed. But from what you're saying, it sounds like the OS doesn't always do a good enough job. So my confusion and learning process of Android continues......

[Q] replacement battery problems (not related to quick draining)

hey,
so my girlfriend has a droid incredible, not rooted, and many times when she switches to her bak up battery AND BACK, her apps delete. many times she has to re-download her apps and they're not even listed under her apps in the market. she turns off the phone before ripping the battery out and changing it, but she still has the issue. the battery is supposedly OEM, and purchased off eBay. its black considering its an evo battery and it reads HTC innovation on the battery. in any case, as i mentioned before, it happens when she switches back to her regular battery as well. in addition the widgets read "problem loading gadget". (obviously because the app has deleted)
anyone have any solutions to solving this or why this might e happening. to my understanding these batteries should yield no problems. also, this is not the first time this has happened it has happened alot. perhaps if there is no direct solution, maybe i can find an app to make sure none of my apps get deleted during the transfer process? let me know,
thanks
if anyone can help i also have minor issue on my dinc with the generic batteries i ordered from ebay that when i plug it in, the battery has an exclamation point. anyway to get rid of this? its not too annoying because i use mini info widget anyway, but id rather have it solved.
thanks again
m
If they're on the SD card it'll often take a few minutes for it to load up.
The problem looks like it's from the SD card, maybe it's having some issues or maybe she's accidentally knocking it out of place when she switches batteries.

the problem seems to be deeper than that. shes definitely not knocking out the sd card cuz its always stable. besides this is a problem for every app thats not stock. she doesnt have ALL apps2sd anyway.
if it helps.. some apps stay some apps go, but for the ones that stay, they force close. ie. hopstop wasnt deleted but FC. in addition she would re download twitter and that would FC. to confuse you even more shazam was not deleted or reinstalled but still works (all data was deleted tho)
Sounds weird. I know this is a long shot that you will actually try it, but it sounds like it'd be a good idea to reinstall that phone.
It's been known that there are a couple of mallicous apps (now removed from the market) but it's *possible* she may have downloaded one of them and that is causing a lot of the issues. It may just be some weird data corruption in important system files, it's hard to tell with just what you're telling me but as long as she doesn't mind it- reinstalling with a fresh ROM and kernel would be a good start and likely will fix the problem.
Apps can still be backed up via titanium backup, and there's apps for backing up messages and you can sync contacts to either verizon or your google account.
Just a thought.

*Sigh*....starting to lose faith...

So here's a typical day with WP7.
Wake up, unplug phone from PC. I had left it to sync overnight, because for some reason Zune wasn't syncing a particular photos subfolder (1), so I removed the whole lot and resynced over 6,000 photos while I slept. Found the phone was only half-charged (2). Plugged it into the mains while I got ready for work.
Saw there was an update for Board Express Pro, downloaded it but it failed, as I'm using the trial (3).
As I left for work, I went to hit PLAY on my music, expecting to carry on listening to the music I had last night, but in the dropdown music controls, it displayed just a blank. So I had to reselect the album (4).
On the train, sat at the station waiting to leave, I went to access Game Chest: Logic Games to make my next chess move in the ongoing game against my wife. The phone spent ages starting up the game, then informed me, despite having a 3G connection, that it couldn't connect to the game (5). Tried two or three more times (6). No dice. Decided to try Alphajax, but on starting that up, it complained it couldn't obtain push notifications (7). It asked me to restart my phone, which I did (8). The restart got stuck at the "Windows Phone" splash screen for about two minutes - it normally takes a couple of seconds, so that was a worry (9). Eventually I got my home screen, so I went back into Alphajax and got the same message again (10). So no push updates any more for that game. Went back to my home screen and noticed that I'm also not getting tile updates for either Flixster (11) or Flickr (12). Decided to play a bit of Sudoku (Game Chest: Logic Games). I always use a bluetooth headset, and partway through the game something happened and the sounds stopped coming through (13). I had to go into SETTINGS and disconnect my headset, then reconnect to get it working again (14).
I went into Marketplace to look for an app to keep my ten-pin bowling scores in. I found a couple, but they both keep the scores on the phone with no way to sync to my PC or to the cloud, hence they're useless because if my phone breaks, gets stolen or hard resets itself, I stand to lose the entire bowling score history that I'd have inputted to the app (15). So I knocked up a spreadsheet and emailed it to my phone (no easy way to get it onto the phone (16)). When I opened the sheet on the phone, I found just about all the formatting had vanished and several of the centered headings were invisible (17). So I made up my mind to keep my scores in a notebook while bowling and enter them into a spreadsheet on my PC when I get home. So much for smartphones (18).
Now I'm at work, writing this, and have experienced 18 annoyances with my phone in the space of just four hours.
I am seriously starting to get sick of it.
I think I'm on the cusp of going to try out Android! Save me!
The fact is.. we are early adopters. Yes.
And we all know that we would have a problematic phone in our hands when we bought WP7. Then why did I buy this?
Because I was faithful that Microsoft was not going to blow it up. I thought MS was going to update, fix bugs, and try their best, since they have the nicest phone right now.
It's not the bugs that annoy me. It is the fact that the January update turns out to be an April update (yeah, we are 22 March and nothing until now).
And it doens't fix a quarter the problems that we can found in the list of bugs thread.
I share your pain and frustration.
Yesterday I caught myself looking at Nexus S. I'm worried ;/
Still.. since I've balls, I'll stand and wait some more for MS do something useful in this life (oh, yeah, they do sometimes.. Xbox, Win7..)
Don't abandon us!
I don't believe the phone charges while it is in the process of syncing over USB, only when it is in standby, it has been discussed a few times. If you just synced, obviously it accessed your music, so how can you expect it to have not prevented you from accessing it, it does that as a precautionary measure. The trial issue has been discussed a variety of times as well, It's been fixed in NoDo. The games and push notifications could be device specific, as you're the 3rd person I've seen mention this. I use my SkyDrive to move files, or email, I don't see how that isn't "easy." As far as the formatting, good luck finding perfect formatting on Android...
You see, there's no one thing with WP7 that in itself is enough to make me abandon it. It's just the daily grind of all those annoyances that continually grate on me. I'm always sat next to someone playing with their iPhone or Android or Blackberry and some of the time as I'm whizzing through WP7s tiles or playing with some jazzy app I can see them glance over at my phone....and then I'll almost inevitably come to an app that won't open and I'll have to reboot my phone to get it working and I can imagine them chuckling to themselves as I eat humble pie.
It. is. annoying. The potential is there but there are so many let-downs.
There is absolutely no need for this thread to turn into a flamewar.........
If you can offer a potential solution or any relevant information to the points raised by the OP then please dont be shy in putting them forward...
Anything else, dont bother.
That is all.

Really don't see why my post had to be edited when it wasn't a 'flame' - maybe his response attacking my thank count was, but mine was asking a question of utilizing available resources. Those that have been posted a variety of times.

Dude I was just teasing ya! Anyway I think you've missed the point of the thread. I'm not looking for individual fixes / excuses / workarounds etc etc to each of the individual points. My point is, that was a TYPICAL day spent with WP7, and that all these little things contribute to an overall feeling of malaise with the OS. I've tried to put across that I am a stalwart of WP7 - I have had many many WM5 / 6 / 6.1 / 6.5 phones over the years and went straight to WP7 and yes there is much to like, which is why I'm still clinging to it.
I really just want to guage the mood among other WP7 users - are they experiencing similar malaise to me or not? Is it just me?

That statement wasnt specifically directed at you. You'll notice that posts from multiple users have been deleted in an attempt to bring this thread back on topic.
Let me make this very clear to all concerened.
I expect the next post to be directly related to the isues raised by the OP.
Not discussing the drama this thread has already caused in its short lifespan.
NO MORE OFF TOPIC CHATTER PLEASE!
typical ?
is this a typical day of your phone usage ? I've seen the bug thread, but there aren't a whole lot of folks posting similar accounts of annoyances... there are threads, but not so many all at once, such a short span of time.
I wonder how long since your last reset, and if you reboot it daily, weekly, or just when it becomes unusable ?
id imagine it this is a typical experience that m$ is working pretty hard on it... with the update getting pushed back regularly.

It wasn't until I started writing them down that I realized just how many there were.

I did a hard reset a couple of weeks back to cure the push notification issue, but it has returned. I reboot my phone whenever an app asks me to or an app stops working or anything else goes wrong that a reboot might cure. On average, probably about once or twice per day.

The delays in getting the bug fixes are all part of the overall feeling of "meh" I'm getting about WP7.
Obviously you're still very much in love with WP7, which is fine - I wish I was, too, but despite me evangelizing it to all my mates, deep down I don't feel anything like as good about it as I did in October last year.
Actually, I just remembered another thing that went wrong this morning - when I came out of the (constantly crashing) Comica app, the screen graphics went all ape**** and I had to reboot. Again.
To be honest, with this many issues I would be inclined to think that it's a device specific problem.
Do you have any kind of warranty you could claim on?
Sent from my fingers to your face...
I understand a lot of the little frustrations, especially with the update delays, but one thing that did stand out for me is the comment about stability... having to restart your phone to get basic functionality (app launching) going again. I very seldom (less than once a month) have needed to reboot my Focus to get some service or app going again. Some apps do have stability issues for me, but a reboot of the phone doesn't appear to be needed... I can simply relaunch the app in question after it returns to the start menu (sometimes I've had an issue where the app needs a couple of launches to sort itself out).
Are you using a WP7 device with a replaced microSD card, or a Samsung Focus with an added microSD card? The stability issues sound like something that I'd expect to see with a non-compliant microSD card, or some hardware issue with the device. I'm running a Samsung Focus with an added 16 GB card (Ridata, class 6 for the curious), and 20+ GB of space has been used on the phone since Dec., and my device sounds like it is far more stable than yours at the moment.

Well yeah there's a warranty but most of the issues are either with apps or are known software issues.

I usually try restarting the app at least three times before I reboot. Rebooting always fixes it.

No it's an HD7 with the stock O2 ROM and stock 16GB card as supplied. I have done nothing to it.

TBH, I think this is the main problem. HTC isn't exactly known for providing great SD cards with their devices.
I encountered similar issues on my HD7 but haven't seen them on either of the Omnia7's or Optimus7 currently available to me.

But if it was a problem with the storage card, why would rebooting fix it?
If any data on the card was corrupted, it would still be corrupted after the reboot. If it was a transient read error, then retrying would usually work, but it never does.

I don't know for sure, but I reckon the OS gets bogged down over time. Either due to temporary files or running processes. I didn't investigate much myself as I returned the handset after about a week, but others with certain HTC devices (as well as some DVP owners) have said the problems go away by changing the SD card.
It may also be that it's fixed in NoDo as they have reworked the way memory is accessed. I did however see similar issues in the 7008 build on my Omnia7 - which made me revert to the standard 7004.
Hehe, WP7 is piling it on today. Just tried to download an app.
"Can't get this information at the moment. Check again in a little while."
*Sigh*

I think we dell venue pro owners are the experts on sd cards and WP7 The known problem with the DVP crashing when using wifi or returning from standby with a black screen is fixed for a lot of people who swapped their sd cards, though not all. For reasons we cant pinpoint WP7 is spectacularly picky about which cards it works with. I myself have tried 2 new cards and have not managed to solve the crashing problem on my DVP.
Quite possibly you are experiencing the same intolerance to certain sd cards on your HD7 as has affected the DVP and possibly a device swap could fix it. I certainly have not experienced the level of individual application failures you have, and that is with a known crash happy device.
I think I will wait for Nodo and see what happens after. There are some bugfixes in Nodo so you never know. Nodo must surely be coming in the next few days.....right?
