hi
im trying to perform a nandroid backup before flashing a new rom
i'm already rooted but cant figure out how to get into the nandroid bootloader to do this
help
thank you
Get back into recovery using whatever method you used to root - it's step 2 or recovery-windows.bat, whatever you used, and nandroid is under the Backup/Restore section of the recovery menu. Pick nand backup, not the nand+ext.
thanks so much
just tried booting the phone without being connected to the computer and wondered why the option wasnt there to perform a backup

Simple answer is NO.
The nandroid backup can only be done after you have rooted. So if you are not yet rooted you can't use it. Also, nandroid is not an app backup system. It will restore your phone to the state it was in directly before you did the backup. This means it will replace your rom, aswell as all other settings.
The only time to use nandroid is before flashing a new rom as a safeguard against the new rom not working or you not liking it.
If you want to backup your games and apps. I'd use titanium backup (requires root) or my backup pro.
what about clockswork backup one? does it backup the applications? and yeah its rooted
Nandroid is nandroid. It will do a complete backup- rom, apps, settings etc. If you use it, it will restore your phone to the old rom.
Think of it as windows system restore. It restores the phone to the state it was in directly before you did the backup. So everything you did after the backup will be undone.
clockswork=nandroid?
Clockworkmod recovery or any other custom recovery you choose has nandroid and it is all the same.
Maybe 3rd time lucky here...... Nandroid in whatever form is not an app. backup system. It is a total phone backup.
ok got it... lock the thread i am done
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm a little confused. I'm aware of all the S-OFF, permarooting etc and the necessary ways to get them. Before I go through with these guides however, I'd like a backup of some sort.
I know ClockworkMod is a custom recovery and you can perform nandroid backups with it, but I also understand there is a default recovery mode you can access from the bootloader that can also do that. Obviously I'd like to make a full nandroid backup before I make any permanent changes.
However, when I select 'Recovery' from the bootloader, my phone goes to a black screen with a generic phone icon and a red ! in a triangle. Why could this be? It is a standard UK T-Mobile Desire Z with no modifications aside from a Gfree S-OFF that was reversed again by copying the backup partition back.
That is the splashscreen of the stock recovery. Press Vol-Up and Power to get past that screen - but you won't be able to do a nandroid unless you have a custom recovery installed - sorry!
Thanks very much for that info. So there's no way of making a nandroid backup before I do things like permarooting? Will the unroot option in Visionary reverse that?
Presumably there's a way of reverting from ClockworkMod to the stock recovery?
the only time you will be able to make a backup is when you install clockwork. No clockwork no backup.
Use titanium backup for the settings and apps and then install clockwork and then do nandroid. if that doesnt work you have your TB to restore.
You can also try to "adb pull /system" and pull everything to your desktop.,... but pushging it back will require skillz.
If you want to revert from clockwork to stock recovery you need to flash stock recovery but do not do it with an incompatible rom.
Thank you, oh wise one!
Don't worry about the fact you can't do a nandroid backup before you root the phone, because it's easy enough to un-root.
You can do the nandroid backup as soon as you've got root/S-OFF, installed ROM Manager and flashed Clockwork recovery. It's very important to do this before you flash any sort of custom ROM. I am amazed by the number of people who seem to flash a custom ROM straight away with no backup whatsoever !
I have spent hours and hours over time rooting my device and once I get that done and finally get all my settings just how I want them, I go ahead and make a nandroid backup: Either via CWM recovery or Orange Backup (playstore app).
After all this, I happen to have a bad flash and my phone won’t boot up or whatever. I boot into CWM recovery and I go into backup/restore-->restore and never..never has CWM been able to recognize the backup so I end up having to do a complete restore and have to reroot and do everything again.
Am I doing something wrong? Is my phone just messing up? Any help would honestly be greatly appreciated
thanks

No spaces in the name of the backup correct?
Also, are you using the same recovery to restore? I know that it will always fail if you mix cwm5 and cwm6.. Just a thought and a suggestion to use the same recovery that you backed up with to restore.. or go to el26 and try to restore..
Has to be the same recovery that you made the backup on, or you will get an md5 mismatch error
Hi all,
I need to recover some information from my phone from before I flashed a new ROM, and wondering what's the easiest way about it based on the scenario given below;
I was running a rooted stock ROM (LB) with TWRP. I used titanium to batch backup my apps ( but seem to have overlooked my notepad app which had info in it that I now need.)
I installed resurrection remix which comes with CWM so can't just do a new nandroid, then restore the old one to get the info, then re-restore the newer backup.
Is there a way to extract the info direct from my twrp backup on my SD/ laptop or do I need to/is it possible to flash TWRP to replace CWM and keep the rest of the ROM as-is?
TIA
If you are just recovering a file, and not restoring the backup itself, try using nandroid manager. I can extract a file from my nandroid backup (created by cwm). I never tried it with twrp nandroid backup though.
Other option is to try to flash the Dual Recovery on your phone.
Then you have TWRP and CWM on your phone.

Dearest XDA Gods,
I currently have a rooted HTC One m8 (international) running Marshmallow with an unlocked bootloader, twrp recovery installed and S-Off (thank you Sunshine!).
I'm toying with the idea of switching to cyanogenmod as I have installed it on a couple of my other devices and I love it but I'll probably wait until they've got a CM13 snapshot available (anyone know when this might be?) because I don't want the hassle of downloading nightlies and stability issues.
When I do finally get round to flashing CM, is there a way to get back to my current setup, if I wanted to, without losing root/bootloader/s off? I've created a Nandroid backup of my current system but I understand that this may not be enough to restore the kernel, which I gather is very important if you want your phone to... well... work. I imagine I could just download the stock firmware and flash that but would that mean that I lose my unlocked bootloader and my s off (I love sunshine but I don't want to pay those guys twice!).
Greatly appreciate any advice !
Thanks guys,
George
When you restore your nandroid backup .. it will restore all kernel/boot, data & system (you need to select these in restore menu)
You won't lose unlocked bootloader and S-Off by restoring nandroid (you'll lose them when you manually change them with fastboot commands) and if your nandroid include root, it will restore your root too. If it is not backup with root, simply flash SuperSU.zip will root it again.
Restoring a nandroid will restore your settings too.

Thanks for the fast response man! I think I see what you mean, so if I backup the boot partition (which contains the kernel), and my system and data partitions then it should restore everything on my phone, including root (because I was rooted when I created my backups).
Yes .. correct
