I apologise for the length of this post, but I would be most greatful if any of you knowledgeable techies out there, could help me out.
I have several issues with the email client on the Desire:
1. Any emails deleted on the device, get deleted from the server, so they are therefore not
available to view/download on my desktop machine.
(I have checked that the Delete mail on server, under "Receive settings" is NOT ticked)
I have 2 completely different accounts, one of which is a domain name account, and
this happens on both of them!
My wife has an Iphone, and it works perfectly, ie if I delete any mails on the Iphone, they
do not get deleted from the server!! Why does the HTC email client delete from the
server, even if I have the option unticked?
2. The other issue, is a little more complicated to explain....but here goes.
One of my accounts is an NTL World address, and will only allow me to send mails
if I am connected to my router. I am also on Vodafone, and although I can easily
send emails using "send.vodafone.net" this will not work if I happen to be connected
to a wifi network.
The simple solution for me to solve the issue, is to use the outgoing
server from my domain name account, as this allows sending both on wifi and 3g.
However, the ridiculous thing is that the HTC client does not allow me to set different
usernames and passwords for the incoming and outgoing servers, it automatically sets
the outgoing username and password to the same as the incoming. It is possible
to manually change the outgoing server details, but they refuse to save, and when
I go back and check, they are defaulted to the same as the incoming.
This simply is not a problem on my wifes Iphone, it just works flawlessly.
The following may sound a little harsh, but I have come to the inevitable conclusion that this email client was designed/cobbled together, by someone with a lot less talent than the people who designed the Iphone one!!
I really don't want to deride the device, because it is in many respects absolutely brilliant, but as I use it fundamentally as a business tool, I do need to be able to access emails from multiple accounts effortlessly, like my wife can on her Iphone!
Thanks for taking the time to look at this post, and if you have any ideas, please let me know.
1. For your Exchange account, this is the expected behaviour. The mailbox on the server is fully synchronised with the mailbox on your phone. If you delete something in one place it's deleted in the other. This is how Exchange is designed to work - you get the same view of your data regardless of how you view it (Outlook, Outlook Web Access, mobile device, etc).
For the other account, are you using POP or IMAP?
2. NTL obviously will only accept outgoing email when you're connected to their cable network. So you do need to use another outgoing SMTP server. Any SMTP server will do, so long as it allows relaying for authenticated connections. So you're going about this the right way, the issue is why are you having problems saving the modified outgoing server settings? Are you going NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, etc, up to "FINISH SETUP"?
You may find you get better results for IMAP/POP email using the free K9 mail app:

Rob, thanks for the reply.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that my domain name account, is not using Exchange, it is just a POP account.
With the NTL account, there is definitely no way of setting a different username and password for the outgoing server. It allows you to type in the correct details, and it looks as though it is going to work, as after going through the screens and clicking Next, Next etc, it finally ends up on the "Finish Setup" screen. However, when I try and send it fails immediately, and when I check the username and password, it has defaulted to the same as the incoming server!!!!
I have just come off the phone to HTC, discussing this issue, and the lady I spoke to simply did not understand, I might as well have tried getting technical support from my cat!
Many thanks for the info on the K9 app, I am going to give that a try.
When you initially set up the NTL account, did you choose the "Manual setup" option? You would need to in order to have the option to enter alternative SMTP settings:
Yes, exactly as shown, but as I said, it always defaults to the same username and password as the incoming server.

Hi everybody,
is it possible to browse the whole content of my IMAP Email-Folder with Outlook?
When I access my email via IMAP, only the newest message gets displayed, but it seems to be impossible to browse the whole content of the IMAP Folders on respective email account.
Anybody got a clue if this is normal?
Thanks for your help,

After having some issues with web based hotmail, which I suspect is due to my service provider, I decided to try setting pocket outlook up with hotmail using the POP settings.
If I started the setup by typing in my hotmail email address, pocket outlook would quit and take me straight to the hotmail site in opera, so I set up another email account, and once finished, went back and edited all the settings to hotmail.
It connects fine but despite me having set it to only download emails for either the last 1 or 7 days, it tries to check every single email in the inbox for changes when I try and sync. I have several thousand emails in there so this takes rather a long time!
Is there any other settings I need to change? I couldn't find anything relevant.
I have set up a couple of other pop accounts and none have this problem.
cheers
Jon
Hotmail discontinued pop service in July. To sync hotmail with outlook you need a add on called outlook connector.
http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2002/06/19/187855/hotmail-pop-mail-users-will-have-to-pay.htm
Hi there. That link was from 2002! POP has been working fine for me as I pay for hotmail. The outlook connecter has not been necessary, maybe if you use outlook but I use thunderbird on the desktop.
As I mentioned, I can download the emails on my PPC so the service is still available, it is just this syncing every email thing that is the problem.
IF you are not paying for Hotmail ( like me)... you have to use Outlook Connector for your desktop outlook. But for your phone (TP2) you can you have to use the automatic settings.. Meaning when you go to add account... it will ask for your email address and password.. and it will try to find settings for your domain ( i.e. hotmail) .. this will set it up for you. Don't use POP settings unless you are paying for hotmail.
The link was just for reference if you weren't aware of the pay for hotmail switchover. Since you pay for hotmail service i'm not sure why your pop does not work. You might want to try letting phone use automatic settings as mentioned above.
Cheers guys. The problem is that whenever I try and use auto settings, ie enter my hotmail address, the pocket outlook application quits and it opens opera automatically - on the hotmail page which doesn't work with my service provider. Microsoft have obviously programmed it to do this.
Try using the Windows Live app, it will create a hotmail inbox for you as part of the setup process. allowing you to setup your sync schedule and everything. This is probably the best option for you to use.

Since this problem occurs with auto configuration, have you tried a manual config to setup your account? Please note the new POP3 free access settings available since beginning of the year: http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions/settings/archive/2009/01/06/send-and-receive-windows-live-hotmail-emails-from-a-mail-client.aspx
The alternative is to use Windows Live to setup Hotmail, as suggested above, but it will only display the latest 50 messages. Do remember to uncheck synchronize with Contacts if you don't want your Contacts to also show Windows Live ones

(label for sync/combine contacts option varies depending on Windows Live version being used)
Zylograth thanks, that's done the trick. I did not realise the windows live app set up email as I had not seen the 'sync email' checkbox. I now have a hotmail account with all the subfolders as expected that sync properly.
One final problem now - I cannot figure out how to delete an email account I do not want - holding the stylus on the account I want to remove does not bring up a menu, and there seems to be no 'delete account' option anywhere. Can I do this from the pocket pc?
*edit* thanks too mesquire, I didn't see your post before.
To delete your email account (except Hotmail setup by Windows Live): are you at the Messaging Options page?
Hi, yes that is the page.
Try an alternative.
Start > All Programs > Messaging
Select the account you wish to delete, then Menu > Delete
That brings me to the same menu. There is no delete option in the menu list when I have the account selected, rather than an individual email in it.
You should get a prompt screen like this
Did you check the option at the bottom of the page to open the account picker?
Nope, but I have now! Many thanks Mesquire, that's sorted it. Thanks for the effort.

Finally GMail is also supporting Push Email http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-sync-now-with-push-gmail-support.html for your Exchange client on Windows Mobile! Now in addition to contacts and calendar items also your gmail is automatically pushed to your HD if you configure the Activesync Exchange client on your WM device. Thought I let you know, since this was asked for in many push email threads before.
Nice! To bad WM6 doesn't support multiple "exchange servers"
Has someone tried it? Following the page it says "Google Sync is a beta product". Will try to set it up now.
Edit:
I´ve set it up and looks that its working. Will try it some days. Never used Pushmail before, so i have no ideas how long the battery will last.
Edit 2: Don´t know if the service from google is so slow or my connection to the internet. It takes really long to sync only my contacts.
Just tried it. It is extremely slow at the moment, and I had only 1 out of 10 syncs succeeding...
I guess google kind of underestimated the number of users they would have on the first day.

The first 3 times i tried sync gave me an error too. But the 4. works. But so slooow
Edit: After 30 minutes i wasn´t able to activate my phone. It was completely off. I had to take off battery before i was able to power it on again. But battery was full. Can the Google Sync make such a problem?
Works extremely well for me, no issues at all (speed, battery or otherwise). If you choose Exchange Push over Imap Idle this is your free solution. Idle traffic btw is the same, for me about 15megs per month, depending on your push settings and data plan.
A shame, that Exchange is only able to control one active sync connection at time. So, i can't use my work account and my private google mail account for push
I hope, there is any solution in near future
I can´t get it work right. The first time he syncs it works. But then when it wants to get new mails from server, it gives an error message. Do not remember well what it was, but something like: Was not possible to finish syncronize. If error persists, try to re-setup your configuration.
Any idea? Set it up 3 times, always with same result.
Works!!!
Thanks for the update, it works fine for me. Been testing it...Sending and receiving mails quite well and very fast.

hi grayme, sorry, but this is the same as updating email every x minutes. no real push
After flashing to another Rom and testing Gmail Sync about 3 Days i can say it´s actually very fast. I had a little problem with contact sync but later i turned it off, because i don´t need this, only for Emails.
Until now i have to charge my phone every 1-2 days. Quite heavy diference with Data Connection always on. But i think it´s ok,

it is yes, but where x equals the exact time between emails. isn't that good enough? I've been happy with that for nearly a year now until google's true push.

Only one account per phone? A bit tacky I wanted Gmail and Google Apps.
Ok guys, I have Miri v12 rom on my HD and I tried to setup my gmail account on Activesync on the Vista Mobile Device Center and directly on my Touch HD, with the help of this step-by-step guide http://bit.ly/5l5Rw , but in the end when I try to sync, it asks for my Exchange Server credentials, user pass and domain, but no go...
No matter if I put in username: [email protected] or simply in the username field I put the username and then in the domain field I put googlemail.com, It always end up asking me again for the credentials...
Can anyone help me? Am I doing something wrong? I've tried this on my actual rom and on another one, but no luck.
Update: Ok, I found out, it not @googlemail.com, but @gmail.com !!! The step-by-step guide is misleading
It shouldn't ask for domain. Try unchecking the box where it says get settings automatically. I think this is in the very first dialogue box. It works flawlessly for me. Thanks for the info.

It says fill in your full accountname.
If that's gmail, type in [email protected]..
Not that hard, is it?
I'm synchronising as we speak, curious to see how and if it works.
Contacts take some while, though.
Yeah Google cannot use the Gmail brand in Germany, so its Googlemail for Germany only, Gmail for all others.
Since upgrading to 2.2 I've been having trouble receiving Email notifications from Gmail.
I have 4 accounts set up in total. The primary account (the one I used when initially setting up the phone) still works correctly. The remaining 3 don't receive mail automatically. I can manually sync the accounts (Settings / Accounts & sync) by selecting each of the accounts in turn and selecting "Sync now". I can also sync from the Google mail app by moving between accounts and manually refreshing. But I don't receive new mail automatically. If I try "Sync all" in Accounts & sync, it appears to ignore the problem accounts.
I've removed the problem accounts and added them back. I've cleared the data from Google Services Framework. I've cleared the data from Google Mail. I've rebooted. I've disabled latitude, I've disabled chrome to phone.
Mail did work correctly, briefly, this morning after some fiddling but not for very long and I can't get it working again.
Anybody got any idea what's going on??
Cheers!
same is happening here!!! seems to sync and inform me when ever it feels like it!
Really annoyed about this as Id starting using email instead of txt with my other half to save pennies!!!

i had the same problem... but after i manually synced them (settings-sync) it started working again... ill let you know if it bugs out again...
Same thing happened to me. I just did a factory reset, hope it helps!
Factory Reset did NOT WORK
same here also have the problem that when I am connected by Wifi I can't browse the internet
In fact, since the factory reset, NONE of my four accounts work. Before the reset, at least one of them worked.
And my screen shuts off even when plugged in USB. I'm not sure where the setting is anymore...
I kept an eye on my log, and right when I sent an email to one of the accounts, this popped up:
W/ResponseProcessCookies( 522): Cookie rejected: "[version: 0][name: GX][value: DQAAAJsAAADQe9V7lD-OqnqpXugutw9gtUwoaDaU0-4dl5wZ6PiHx1xaFkfrQtQAiw55NvcFubXuaVso-nIS2XkXu_6XBS99gLCyNoYw8-4ZMFtdactjwAOKQM2D0JrSeRT1Kp4ly76rvgKhPEkvBT9yBa81HYg902gOwFvXC0asfGs7vXisy4OTZywHlYAVnT-Ngk1GOLrqbKvNopkWrt6ynyHhWsk7][domain: mail.google.com][path: /proxy/gmail/mail][expiry: Mon Aug 16 22:45:40 GMT+08:00 2010]". Illegal domain attribute "mail.google.com". Domain of origin: "android.clients.google.com"
Any thoughts?

I also saw a lot of cookie errors this morning. I'm not 100% sure they are connected to the Gmail app because they seemed to disappear after I'd disabled Latitude, Buzz and Talk (Talk seemed to be having problems). And, when everything was working for me this morning, similar errors were still showing up in the logs.
This afternoon I performed a factory reset (and spent many hours restoring all my apps and settings) - I still have the same problem. Maybe.
As I typed that previous sentence I did actually receive a notification for one of the "extra" gmail accounts .. so it may be partially working.
It's all very frustrating because it seems to work occasionally, but not always and not predictably.
Just out of interest, and in an effort to nail the cause down, whereabouts are you located? I'm in London and when I set the accounts up Gmail always tries to default to the address to googlemail.com, and I always adjust it to read gmail.com .. do you get the same thing?
yep im near London at the moment but I use a different domain that is registered with google apps. So doubt its anything to do with the googlemail domain.
It seems to work for a bit after ive done a manual sync but then stops.
People keep saying they are getting these cookie errors, was just wondering where they are seeing these errors because I cant see anything obvious!!
Cheers
I had the same problem before.
I found a Google support article that said to clear the app cache in the applications menu. This fixed it for me.
I am in Hong Kong, so I don't think the problem is related to location.
I have cleared the cache, that did not help. The ONLY time I have seen my other accounts update without me doing it manually is when I:
Disable sync
Reboot
Enable sync
It will then sync "by itself" once. But after that it stops working again.

Actually, I take that back.
My sync is still working unpredictably. Last night I automatically received Emails on two of the (secondary) accounts, and this morning I'm still reseciving mail on the primary account and one of secondaries .. but not on another of the secondaries.
Logcat says ..
08-03 09:27:30.429 W/ResponseProcessCookies( 7295): Cookie rejected: "[version: 0][name: GX][value: DQAAAJAAAADz9HpsY748emxcZlwsFmS-4yj3Hv1D_o3I51-9slsECeWxJ77LgbGCbM2YOFugkcuHCqxyYnfmqRQrQc6FuRiR9tUwtKtm5ckDqe2pDKNtHDokjF9SkIBEadnheUHM1oqPZlyE0oIXCT7-kJceaIjCm8AU-TUSj8DeAGgtAg5tw-HjZjZk_Dx37bneEbTWonE][domain: mail.google.com][path: /proxy/gmail/mail][expiry: Tue Aug 17 09:27:29 GMT+01:00 2010]". Illegal domain attribute "mail.google.com". Domain of origin: "android.clients.google.com"
.. and PID 7295 is Google Mail.
To my untrained eye this *looks* like a problem on the server .. it's trying to set a cookie on the device, but the domain for the cookie doesn't match the domain of the server trying to set the cookie. Unless the client is mistakenly talking to the wrong domain in the first place.
Bah!
I have 2 gmail accounts, one google apps (primary - contact/cal/mail sync) and a secondary which uses @gmail.com only for mail+calendar syncing.
On sunday, right after the update I noticed that my primary account (google apps) was having sync issues. In the sync status, it said there were possibly issues on the server side.
Now however, my primary account seems to work, but my gmail account stopped syncing. I tried almost everything, I even tried to talk my Desire into working again, but alas..
Someone please fix this
Perhaps some of you guys who're having these issues also use the GMail widget? Maybe some kind of interference there?
I think I fixed it.
I uninstalled Task Manager (task killing app from adao team) & the gmail widget (Gmail unread count from Alexander Blom). Cleared data through manage applications, restarted the phone and now it seems to work again. Don't know if it is permanent though.

Same here - I performed a factory reset and, after setting up the primary account, added the other accounts through the gmail app .. some accounts worked, some did not.
This morning, I had 3 accounts accepting pushed Email, and 1 failing.
Anyhoo, I figured that I'd wasted enough time on the issue and have installed K-9 Mail. I removed all of the secondary accounts from the Gmail app, enabled IMAP on all my gmail accounts via the web interface and then added them to K-9 .. and now I have push mail for all of my accounts again.
Here are some screenshots to describe the problem:

I noticed about a week ago that my battery life was diminishing rapidly. I wasn't sure what was causing it up until today when I noticed on my battery meter that the exchange services was on top of the list of battery usage. I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be that way from looking at other people's battery usage diagrams. Can someone confirm what your exchange services is listed in the battery usage list?
Also, does anyone know what may be going on with my exchange services and why it is draining so much of my battery juice. I am using it to check my Hotmail email.

I'd check the incoming and outgoing settings to make sure they're configured properly. If sync is broken it'll keep trying to send/receive over and over again.
Just a guess. I've had no issues with it taking up battery. Syncing an IMAP outlook account and a POP account from my ISP.

I can't help with your issue but my question is could it be your ROM or kernel? I run exchange sync with calendar contacts etc and receive around 150 emails a day. Exchange services dont even register on the power usage screen...
I removed the account and then re added it and it seems to have solved the problem for now. I will check on it throughout the next 24 hours and see if it stays working properly.

I am on the stock ROM and kernel. Not even rooted yet.

I have had the same problem but the even bigger concern was the 3g data usage.....it was sky high even with sync only 3 days selected and also with check email Every hour enabled instead of push. I ended up disabling it all together....what a silly slip up by Google.

Not just with the data usage on some phones, but also he permissions.
Removing and re-adding the hotmail account didnt help in my case.
I am syncing just emails. No Contacts or calendar(which for some was the cause of this issue).
Even with just emails, I drain my stock nexus s running ICS in 6 hours flat.
I tried readding Exchange, but it was always a power sucker. A good impetus for me to personally scoot my very small company over to Google Apps. After screwing around with Exchange and the client's extreme power usage, it was nice to go down to 1% per hour drain.
One of my friends works at a larger company and they all got GNexs and use Exchange and he said that their battery life has been totally untenable across the board. Not sure if Exchange is totally to blame, but I do wonder.
I started out with really good battery life and then after about 2 weeks, Exchange started sucking battery. Strangely, all went back to "normal" after the phone was off for about an hour while I flew to DC. Unfortunately, that only lasted for 3 days and Exchange went right back to keeping the phone awake and sucking battery like crazy unless I was on WiFi.
Yesterday, I got sick of it and deleted my account and re-added it. So far, so good today but it's been less than 24 hours. My fingers are crossed that I had some random event that caused the issue but given it's already come back once, I am not holding my breath.
I saw on another forum that users had the same issue with K9 so it's not just in the stock email client - something is going on behind the scenes with something that drives both apps but I'm no where near techie enough to know what it is. I'm hoping one of you gurus that post here will have an "ah-ha" moment while reading this and be able to help us out!
Samsung Galaxy S2 with ICS has the same problem!
