Gmail Email Push is here! - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Finally GMail is also supporting Push Email http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-sync-now-with-push-gmail-support.html for your Exchange client on Windows Mobile! Now in addition to contacts and calendar items also your gmail is automatically pushed to your HD if you configure the Activesync Exchange client on your WM device. Thought I let you know, since this was asked for in many push email threads before.

Nice! To bad WM6 doesn't support multiple "exchange servers"

Has someone tried it? Following the page it says "Google Sync is a beta product". Will try to set it up now.
Edit:
I´ve set it up and looks that its working. Will try it some days. Never used Pushmail before, so i have no ideas how long the battery will last.
Edit 2: Don´t know if the service from google is so slow or my connection to the internet. It takes really long to sync only my contacts.

Just tried it. It is extremely slow at the moment, and I had only 1 out of 10 syncs succeeding...
I guess google kind of underestimated the number of users they would have on the first day.

The first 3 times i tried sync gave me an error too. But the 4. works. But so slooow
Edit: After 30 minutes i wasn´t able to activate my phone. It was completely off. I had to take off battery before i was able to power it on again. But battery was full. Can the Google Sync make such a problem?

Works extremely well for me, no issues at all (speed, battery or otherwise). If you choose Exchange Push over Imap Idle this is your free solution. Idle traffic btw is the same, for me about 15megs per month, depending on your push settings and data plan.

A shame, that Exchange is only able to control one active sync connection at time. So, i can't use my work account and my private google mail account for push
I hope, there is any solution in near future

I can´t get it work right. The first time he syncs it works. But then when it wants to get new mails from server, it gives an error message. Do not remember well what it was, but something like: Was not possible to finish syncronize. If error persists, try to re-setup your configuration.
Any idea? Set it up 3 times, always with same result.

Works!!!
Thanks for the update, it works fine for me. Been testing it...Sending and receiving mails quite well and very fast.

hi grayme, sorry, but this is the same as updating email every x minutes. no real push

After flashing to another Rom and testing Gmail Sync about 3 Days i can say it´s actually very fast. I had a little problem with contact sync but later i turned it off, because i don´t need this, only for Emails.
Until now i have to charge my phone every 1-2 days. Quite heavy diference with Data Connection always on. But i think it´s ok,

it is yes, but where x equals the exact time between emails. isn't that good enough? I've been happy with that for nearly a year now until google's true push.

Hi,
use this settings on ActiveSync then push work:

Only one account per phone? A bit tacky I wanted Gmail and Google Apps.

Ok guys, I have Miri v12 rom on my HD and I tried to setup my gmail account on Activesync on the Vista Mobile Device Center and directly on my Touch HD, with the help of this step-by-step guide http://bit.ly/5l5Rw , but in the end when I try to sync, it asks for my Exchange Server credentials, user pass and domain, but no go...
No matter if I put in username: [email protected] or simply in the username field I put the username and then in the domain field I put googlemail.com, It always end up asking me again for the credentials...
Can anyone help me? Am I doing something wrong? I've tried this on my actual rom and on another one, but no luck.
Update: Ok, I found out, it not @googlemail.com, but @gmail.com !!! The step-by-step guide is misleading

It shouldn't ask for domain. Try unchecking the box where it says get settings automatically. I think this is in the very first dialogue box. It works flawlessly for me. Thanks for the info.

It says fill in your full accountname.
If that's gmail, type in [email protected]..
Not that hard, is it?
I'm synchronising as we speak, curious to see how and if it works.
Contacts take some while, though.

Yeah Google cannot use the Gmail brand in Germany, so its Googlemail for Germany only, Gmail for all others.

E-mail and USB

Well, I am sure that some people out there might have a similar issue with their device. I have finally been able to setup my e-mail accounts to work properly. I have it turned on to connect to "The Internet" (Wi-Fi on the Dash) every 15 minutes to check for new email. However, when I have the Wi-Fi feature turned off, it won't do it; which is what I want it to do. But when I have it connected to the laptop via USB to charge, it checks for the e-mail. This is pointless as I am already receiving the e-mails on my laptop.
Is there a way that I can have it not use the USB to check for e-mails? I heard in another forum that I can set ActiveSync to "Work" which might resolve the problem. Anyone know how I can do that?
Finally, if that doesn't work, what e-mail applications do you guys recommend? I have my Outlook on my laptop setup so that I receive e-mails from both my account into a single Inbox and I have the option of choosing what account I want to send from. Something like that for the Q/Dash would be very useful.
Oh, and one more thing. Is there a way to have the Q/Dash delete the messages from the server when deleting from the handheld? I would like to be able to filter my messages when receiving them on the handheld so that I don't have to re-read them on my laptop when I get home. If there isn't a setting for it, is there a program that offers this option?
Thanks in advance...
Deleting messages from server
I'm assuming you're using POP and not IMAP to check your messages on your Dash. If so, this is what I do to delete messages on the server:
1. Download messages onto Dash (of course)
2. Delete messages on Dash
3. Empty the Deleted Items folder on Dash
4. Send/Receive messages.
This has the effect of removing the deleted messages from the server. Of course, you must also delete them on the Dash -- so I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for. Another option is to use IMAP...but my email server doesn't support it so I'm using POP.
Hope that helps!
Manzil
Move to Microsoft Exchange you will get Direct Push to your device and will not have to worry ever about e-mail synchronization issues
How would I move to Microsoft Exchange? Can you be a little more specific?
If your school or office doesn't offer it, this is for personal use -- you'll need a hosted Exchange service. There are a lot out there, google 'hosted exchange', or, take a look at the best, http://4smartphone.net

Change the sync directories.
Can you explain how. I'm really ignorant when it comes to these things.
Don't remember exactly, I found it in the help files, or the manual -- one or the other -- take a look.

If you want a free hosted exchange service that does push email and 1 Gb of storage will suffice, you could also try Mail2Web:
https://services.mail2web.com/signup/mail2weblive/mail2webLive_01.asp
Looks good -- just curious though, I noticed the free version is for use with the @mail2web email address format -- can you pay and use your own domain name. That's how 4smartphone.net works, but I couldn't find info on it at the mail2web site.

Call me part of the ingnorant bunch too, but how can I configure POP on my DASH?
I connect through Wifi all the time. When I got to configure "Email Setup" and put my info in, is says contacting server please wait and nothing happens. It tries for a few minutes and then craps out and say it could not connect? But I can browse the web, can view my mail though my web mail accounts and can view my Yahoo account.
Please some advise on this.

Hotmail POP problems

After having some issues with web based hotmail, which I suspect is due to my service provider, I decided to try setting pocket outlook up with hotmail using the POP settings.
If I started the setup by typing in my hotmail email address, pocket outlook would quit and take me straight to the hotmail site in opera, so I set up another email account, and once finished, went back and edited all the settings to hotmail.
It connects fine but despite me having set it to only download emails for either the last 1 or 7 days, it tries to check every single email in the inbox for changes when I try and sync. I have several thousand emails in there so this takes rather a long time!
Is there any other settings I need to change? I couldn't find anything relevant.
I have set up a couple of other pop accounts and none have this problem.
cheers
Jon
Hotmail discontinued pop service in July. To sync hotmail with outlook you need a add on called outlook connector.
http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2002/06/19/187855/hotmail-pop-mail-users-will-have-to-pay.htm
Hi there. That link was from 2002! POP has been working fine for me as I pay for hotmail. The outlook connecter has not been necessary, maybe if you use outlook but I use thunderbird on the desktop.
As I mentioned, I can download the emails on my PPC so the service is still available, it is just this syncing every email thing that is the problem.
IF you are not paying for Hotmail ( like me)... you have to use Outlook Connector for your desktop outlook. But for your phone (TP2) you can you have to use the automatic settings.. Meaning when you go to add account... it will ask for your email address and password.. and it will try to find settings for your domain ( i.e. hotmail) .. this will set it up for you. Don't use POP settings unless you are paying for hotmail.
The link was just for reference if you weren't aware of the pay for hotmail switchover. Since you pay for hotmail service i'm not sure why your pop does not work. You might want to try letting phone use automatic settings as mentioned above.
Cheers guys. The problem is that whenever I try and use auto settings, ie enter my hotmail address, the pocket outlook application quits and it opens opera automatically - on the hotmail page which doesn't work with my service provider. Microsoft have obviously programmed it to do this.
Try using the Windows Live app, it will create a hotmail inbox for you as part of the setup process. allowing you to setup your sync schedule and everything. This is probably the best option for you to use.

Since this problem occurs with auto configuration, have you tried a manual config to setup your account? Please note the new POP3 free access settings available since beginning of the year: http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions/settings/archive/2009/01/06/send-and-receive-windows-live-hotmail-emails-from-a-mail-client.aspx
The alternative is to use Windows Live to setup Hotmail, as suggested above, but it will only display the latest 50 messages. Do remember to uncheck synchronize with Contacts if you don't want your Contacts to also show Windows Live ones

Zylograth thanks, that's done the trick. I did not realise the windows live app set up email as I had not seen the 'sync email' checkbox. I now have a hotmail account with all the subfolders as expected that sync properly.
One final problem now - I cannot figure out how to delete an email account I do not want - holding the stylus on the account I want to remove does not bring up a menu, and there seems to be no 'delete account' option anywhere. Can I do this from the pocket pc?
*edit* thanks too mesquire, I didn't see your post before.
To delete your email account (except Hotmail setup by Windows Live): are you at the Messaging Options page?
Hi, yes that is the page.
Try an alternative.
Start > All Programs > Messaging
Select the account you wish to delete, then Menu > Delete
That brings me to the same menu. There is no delete option in the menu list when I have the account selected, rather than an individual email in it.
You should get a prompt screen like this
Did you check the option at the bottom of the page to open the account picker?
Nope, but I have now! Many thanks Mesquire, that's sorted it. Thanks for the effort.

Email Client is hopeless!

I apologise for the length of this post, but I would be most greatful if any of you knowledgeable techies out there, could help me out.
I have several issues with the email client on the Desire:
1. Any emails deleted on the device, get deleted from the server, so they are therefore not
available to view/download on my desktop machine.
(I have checked that the Delete mail on server, under "Receive settings" is NOT ticked)
I have 2 completely different accounts, one of which is a domain name account, and
this happens on both of them!
My wife has an Iphone, and it works perfectly, ie if I delete any mails on the Iphone, they
do not get deleted from the server!! Why does the HTC email client delete from the
server, even if I have the option unticked?
2. The other issue, is a little more complicated to explain....but here goes.
One of my accounts is an NTL World address, and will only allow me to send mails
if I am connected to my router. I am also on Vodafone, and although I can easily
send emails using "send.vodafone.net" this will not work if I happen to be connected
to a wifi network.
The simple solution for me to solve the issue, is to use the outgoing
server from my domain name account, as this allows sending both on wifi and 3g.
However, the ridiculous thing is that the HTC client does not allow me to set different
usernames and passwords for the incoming and outgoing servers, it automatically sets
the outgoing username and password to the same as the incoming. It is possible
to manually change the outgoing server details, but they refuse to save, and when
I go back and check, they are defaulted to the same as the incoming.
This simply is not a problem on my wifes Iphone, it just works flawlessly.
The following may sound a little harsh, but I have come to the inevitable conclusion that this email client was designed/cobbled together, by someone with a lot less talent than the people who designed the Iphone one!!
I really don't want to deride the device, because it is in many respects absolutely brilliant, but as I use it fundamentally as a business tool, I do need to be able to access emails from multiple accounts effortlessly, like my wife can on her Iphone!
Thanks for taking the time to look at this post, and if you have any ideas, please let me know.
1. For your Exchange account, this is the expected behaviour. The mailbox on the server is fully synchronised with the mailbox on your phone. If you delete something in one place it's deleted in the other. This is how Exchange is designed to work - you get the same view of your data regardless of how you view it (Outlook, Outlook Web Access, mobile device, etc).
For the other account, are you using POP or IMAP?
2. NTL obviously will only accept outgoing email when you're connected to their cable network. So you do need to use another outgoing SMTP server. Any SMTP server will do, so long as it allows relaying for authenticated connections. So you're going about this the right way, the issue is why are you having problems saving the modified outgoing server settings? Are you going NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, etc, up to "FINISH SETUP"?
You may find you get better results for IMAP/POP email using the free K9 mail app:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Rob, thanks for the reply.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that my domain name account, is not using Exchange, it is just a POP account.
With the NTL account, there is definitely no way of setting a different username and password for the outgoing server. It allows you to type in the correct details, and it looks as though it is going to work, as after going through the screens and clicking Next, Next etc, it finally ends up on the "Finish Setup" screen. However, when I try and send it fails immediately, and when I check the username and password, it has defaulted to the same as the incoming server!!!!
I have just come off the phone to HTC, discussing this issue, and the lady I spoke to simply did not understand, I might as well have tried getting technical support from my cat!
Many thanks for the info on the K9 app, I am going to give that a try.
When you initially set up the NTL account, did you choose the "Manual setup" option? You would need to in order to have the option to enter alternative SMTP settings:
Yes, exactly as shown, but as I said, it always defaults to the same username and password as the incoming server.

[Q] Problem with Gmail sync after 2.2 upgrade

Since upgrading to 2.2 I've been having trouble receiving Email notifications from Gmail.
I have 4 accounts set up in total. The primary account (the one I used when initially setting up the phone) still works correctly. The remaining 3 don't receive mail automatically. I can manually sync the accounts (Settings / Accounts & sync) by selecting each of the accounts in turn and selecting "Sync now". I can also sync from the Google mail app by moving between accounts and manually refreshing. But I don't receive new mail automatically. If I try "Sync all" in Accounts & sync, it appears to ignore the problem accounts.
I've removed the problem accounts and added them back. I've cleared the data from Google Services Framework. I've cleared the data from Google Mail. I've rebooted. I've disabled latitude, I've disabled chrome to phone.
Mail did work correctly, briefly, this morning after some fiddling but not for very long and I can't get it working again.
Anybody got any idea what's going on??
Cheers!
same is happening here!!! seems to sync and inform me when ever it feels like it!
Really annoyed about this as Id starting using email instead of txt with my other half to save pennies!!!

i had the same problem... but after i manually synced them (settings-sync) it started working again... ill let you know if it bugs out again...
Same thing happened to me. I just did a factory reset, hope it helps!
Factory Reset did NOT WORK
same here also have the problem that when I am connected by Wifi I can't browse the internet
In fact, since the factory reset, NONE of my four accounts work. Before the reset, at least one of them worked.
And my screen shuts off even when plugged in USB. I'm not sure where the setting is anymore...
I kept an eye on my log, and right when I sent an email to one of the accounts, this popped up:
W/ResponseProcessCookies( 522): Cookie rejected: "[version: 0][name: GX][value: DQAAAJsAAADQe9V7lD-OqnqpXugutw9gtUwoaDaU0-4dl5wZ6PiHx1xaFkfrQtQAiw55NvcFubXuaVso-nIS2XkXu_6XBS99gLCyNoYw8-4ZMFtdactjwAOKQM2D0JrSeRT1Kp4ly76rvgKhPEkvBT9yBa81HYg902gOwFvXC0asfGs7vXisy4OTZywHlYAVnT-Ngk1GOLrqbKvNopkWrt6ynyHhWsk7][domain: mail.google.com][path: /proxy/gmail/mail][expiry: Mon Aug 16 22:45:40 GMT+08:00 2010]". Any thoughts?

I also saw a lot of cookie errors this morning. I'm not 100% sure they are connected to the Gmail app because they seemed to disappear after I'd disabled Latitude, Buzz and Talk (Talk seemed to be having problems). And, when everything was working for me this morning, similar errors were still showing up in the logs.
This afternoon I performed a factory reset (and spent many hours restoring all my apps and settings) - I still have the same problem. Maybe.
As I typed that previous sentence I did actually receive a notification for one of the "extra" gmail accounts .. so it may be partially working.
It's all very frustrating because it seems to work occasionally, but not always and not predictably.
Just out of interest, and in an effort to nail the cause down, whereabouts are you located? I'm in London and when I set the accounts up Gmail always tries to default to the address to googlemail.com, and I always adjust it to read gmail.com .. do you get the same thing?
yep im near London at the moment but I use a different domain that is registered with google apps. So doubt its anything to do with the googlemail domain.
It seems to work for a bit after ive done a manual sync but then stops.
People keep saying they are getting these cookie errors, was just wondering where they are seeing these errors because I cant see anything obvious!!
Cheers
I had the same problem before.
I found a Google support article that said to clear the app cache in the applications menu. This fixed it for me.
I am in Hong Kong, so I don't think the problem is related to location.
I have cleared the cache, that did not help. The ONLY time I have seen my other accounts update without me doing it manually is when I:
Disable sync
Reboot
Enable sync
It will then sync "by itself" once. But after that it stops working again.

Actually, I take that back.
My sync is still working unpredictably. Last night I automatically received Emails on two of the (secondary) accounts, and this morning I'm still reseciving mail on the primary account and one of secondaries .. but not on another of the secondaries.
Logcat says ..
08-03 09:27:30.429 W/ResponseProcessCookies( 7295): Cookie rejected: "[version: 0][name: GX][value: DQAAAJAAAADz9HpsY748emxcZlwsFmS-4yj3Hv1D_o3I51-9slsECeWxJ77LgbGCbM2YOFugkcuHCqxyYnfmqRQrQc6FuRiR9tUwtKtm5ckDqe2pDKNtHDokjF9SkIBEadnheUHM1oqPZlyE0oIXCT7-kJceaIjCm8AU-TUSj8DeAGgtAg5tw-HjZjZk_Dx37bneEbTWonE][domain: mail.google.com][path: /proxy/gmail/mail][expiry: Tue Aug 17 09:27:29 GMT+01:00 2010]". Illegal domain attribute "mail.google.com". Domain of origin: "android.clients.google.com"
.. and PID 7295 is Google Mail.
To my untrained eye this *looks* like a problem on the server .. it's trying to set a cookie on the device, but the domain for the cookie doesn't match the domain of the server trying to set the cookie. Unless the client is mistakenly talking to the wrong domain in the first place.
Bah!
I have 2 gmail accounts, one google apps (primary - contact/cal/mail sync) and a secondary which uses @gmail.com only for mail+calendar syncing.
On sunday, right after the update I noticed that my primary account (google apps) was having sync issues. In the sync status, it said there were possibly issues on the server side.
Now however, my primary account seems to work, but my gmail account stopped syncing. I tried almost everything, I even tried to talk my Desire into working again, but alas..
Someone please fix this
Perhaps some of you guys who're having these issues also use the GMail widget? Maybe some kind of interference there?
I think I fixed it.
I uninstalled Task Manager (task killing app from adao team) & the gmail widget (Gmail unread count from Alexander Blom). Cleared data through manage applications, restarted the phone and now it seems to work again. Don't know if it is permanent though.

Same here - I performed a factory reset and, after setting up the primary account, added the other accounts through the gmail app .. some accounts worked, some did not.
This morning, I had 3 accounts accepting pushed Email, and 1 failing.
Anyhoo, I figured that I'd wasted enough time on the issue and have installed K-9 Mail. I removed all of the secondary accounts from the Gmail app, enabled IMAP on all my gmail accounts via the web interface and then added them to K-9 .. and now I have push mail for all of my accounts again.
Here are some screenshots to describe the problem:

2) Here is the account that is working. As you can see, it syncs no problem:
3) And here is one of the accounts that is not working. As you can see, I did a manual sync last night, but haven't touched it since. So it hasn't been synced during that time:
OK just RIGHT NOW, my accounts synced. For NO reason, it just started working. Let's see if it stays that way...

syncing contacts ----- unbelievable

maybe its me but i find the way that the windows phone syncs with outlook to be unbelieveabley bad. this is the best that windows could do? jeeez guys you cant even get your phones from the same company to sync with your own applications any better than this? and i'm only talking about contacts at the moment.
let me get this straight, i have to do an export for my contacts, make a windows live account, upload contacts backup into windows live and then sync this, through windows live, to my phone. how many more steps could you possibly put in? unbelieveable. now if you are a businessman like me then you might have your contacts divided into different folders/groups which means you have to do a export for each group and go through the above steps to get them onto your phone. isnt that just fantastic! but wait there is more. once you get them onto your phone you then have to re-divide them into groups again. isnt that just fantastic. wait there is even more. lets say you add a new contact, you have to go through this whole BS again. this is the best that the minds at microsoft could come up with. but wait there is more. anything else you want to sync or add to your phone you have to use the zune software. this is just brilliant!!! way to go microsoft your the best....
now lets look at my IPhone. i plug it into my laptop, it automatically launches itunes and automatically syncs all my contacts into groups and adds any new ones i might have added and syncs everything else on the phone in one simple step. apple can sync to microsoft software better than microsoft? unbelieveable and i spent $600 for this crap?
i will have a HTC HD7 for sale if anyone is interested. it is unlocked.
regards
Ta ta then.

...then perhaps it's time to look into Exchange server instead. If you're a small business, get yourself a hosted Exchange server for a few bucks a month.
Anyway, all you really have to do is install the Live add-on for Office, then drag and drop all your contacts from the local addressbook to the live one. Wait a while and all your contacts will magically appear on your phone.

Amazing! !!!
You can either sync with Windows Live (for average user) or with Exchange (which most businesses use). Within those two systems you can create categories, groups etc and it will sync with your phone wirelessly.
Let's take your steps and break them down.
i have to do an export for my contacts, make a windows live account, upload contacts backup into windows live and then sync this, through windows live, to my phone

Export your contacts from Outlook - yes you need to do this.
Make a Windows Live account - no, you already have one if you want to use ANY of the services on Windows Phone 7. So, either you already have one or you haven't actually setup your phone properly. Even if you don't have one it takes less than a minute to get one.
Upload contacts - yes, takes all of 2 seconds on the Windows Live site.
Sync to your phone - big whoop, all you need to do is enter your Windows Live ID (which you should already have entered) and you'll get all of your contacts sorted.
But wait, there's more.
If you download the Windows Live connector for Outlook any changes made to your account will be automatically synced between your phone, computer and the cloud. Everything is backed up and you can gain access to your contacts from where ever you are in the world. Without even having to plug it in.
It's that simple.

Contacts are part of the standard featureset for email (both consumer and corporate). Modern consumer email is dominated by Google gmail and Microsoft hotmail/live mail. Corporate email is dominated by Microsoft Exchange. All of these services support exchange activesync, as do the main phone platforms. While support is often incomplete, it includes synchronization of contacts, which is basic.
If contacts are not part of your email system, or both are stored locally, you have a legacy system that needs upgrading. Probably this was the case.
i appreciate the above responses and it has given me additonal information that i did not have. but, as far as i can see i still have at least two to three additional steps that an IPhone does not require. i thought the windows phone would given me better intergration with microsoft programs but it doesnt. so i keep asking my self why would i keep this phone? they could of made it as simple but they chose not to.
There are some weird quirks with accounts for sure. I understand the requirement for a Live account, but I still can't believe that you can't disable non-email sync on the primary live account or at very least delete it without resetting the entire phone.

WP7 doesn't even have the normal amount of features most modern smartphones have. Stuff like you are talking about is probably not even a consideration with MS. WP7 is "supposed" to be a non-smart smartphone...for the grandmas and grandpas and those who aren't computer literate. From all the excuses I've been battered with over the last 2 months, that seems to be the main one.
If T-Mobile ever gets the iPhone...or if I ever switch carriers, I will put WP7 behind me in favor of a new iPhone.
By the way, don't bother stooping to the level of the fanboys...or fangirls... by responding, just ignore them and they'll go away. Or at most just tell them to keep it on topic.

Synchronization of contacts and email via a USB cable to your pc is not a good idea.
Yes you can do it with some phone platforms, yes not with WP7, yes a lot of people complain, but in this one instance they are wrong. They want to use a flawed and obsolete method.
Basically you need to choose a modern email service, where that includes contacts, calendaring, etc.. If you have WP7, go with Live mail if you want something free, Exchange if you want something good. You have to go through an extra step now, but you should really do that anyway. This should replace what you have at the moment.

I think the problem is if you don't have Exchange syncing isn't that easy. Even after you export the contacts out of Outlook into Hotmail if you add a new contact later you have to manually add them in Hotmail, I don't think Connector will automatically sync them.
If you need to sync your calendar the best way is to add the Live calendar to Outlook then when you create an appointment in Outlook you either have to send an invite to your Hotmail account or drag it to the Hotmail calendar. These options are not that easy.
ok, but considering how long installing and setting up itunes takes, I still think wp7 is faster. And it really isn't that difficult to export your contacts from outlook and open that file in a live account.
Or you can use www.soocial.com to do it for you.

For me, having to set something up once and then never worry about it again is by far the easiest. All you have to do is migrate your contacts over to Windows Live and you will have them kept in sync WITHOUT plugging them in.
Windows Phone also supports Wireless Sync for Music, Videos, etc and so the way they have done it, they do not require you to plug your phone into your computer unless you're updating or doing the initial setup.
To me, this is the simplest, most user-friendly way imaginable.
If you contacts are only locally stored and you happened to have a computer crash or hard drive corruption, those contacts would be lost. If you have them on Windows Live, all you'd need is to sign in with your Windows Live ID on Outlook once you've sorted it out and everything will be back up and running.
Using a Windows Live ID will also alow you to keep your work PC, Laptop and home PC all in sync if that's what you would like. There really are no disadvantages of doing it like this. Try it, I'm sure you'll all agree with us then that it really isn't hard at all.
MartyLK, I don't know why you're calling those who provide clear, logical explanations and solutions a fanboy when you come in here and just say go to iPhone.

You need to set your Live account as the default account for data files by following these steps.
Tools->Account Settings
Data Files tab
Select Windows Live account and click Set as Default
Then calendar and contacts will show up from Windows Live.
The one thing they really need to add is the ability to sync multiple calendars, I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd opted to leave this out.

Oh joy, the person who gets half the threads he posts in locked striked again. Just because you want android and all its flaws doesnt mean we do. Enjoy your iphone and its ugly UI/OS and tiny screen or your android and its overall lag. The sooner you ditch the HD7 the sooner the WP7 community loses a member thats worse off than these "elderly dumbphone" users. Being technology illiterate > being socially incompetent.

I don't understand the problem here.
Ok, so you've been using an old school POP or IMAP account with locally stored Outlook contacts and calendars. As people have been saying this is something one should really consider moving away from anyway.
Since you have to create a Live Account to use your WP7 device fully (i.e. marketplace access and so on) you've got everything you need. Install and configure the Hotmail connector (the Social connector is also nice), open Outlook, go to Contacts (local ones), select ALL, drag and drop these onto "Contacts - [email protected]". Wait a while and they will sync up, wait a little longer and they will automagically appear on your phone. Once they have, delete your local address book from Outlook - ALL your contacts are now stored on the cloud and you can access them from your PC, your Phone and any other PC in the world with internet access.
Now move on to your calendar. This is a little more tricky, as you cannot select ALL and move them across (afaik), so your best bet may be to work your way from today and forward moving all and any entries to the Live calendar. Again, wait a while and they'll all automagically show up on your phone. When they have you may want to disable the local calendar (ie. remove it, but do not delete it if you want the opportunity to go back and check history), finally set your default calendar to the Live one. Any new entries will now go directly to the cloud.
That's it. You're done. Using your Live account for contacts and calendars does not mean you have to send/receive email thru it. You can pick and choose which parts you'll use by default. If you don't make use of it for email, simply remove the Hotmail tile from your home-screen and replace it with your POP/IMAP account.
Like others have said, you do this once. That's it. Everything is now in the cloud and you can sync it up to any device you want.
