Help needed, dead BA - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Well, as always XDA developers is what you use when noone else helps you, my freaking BA is acting strange:
1. The phone doesnt turn on when the battery is in. Tried charging the battery 100% and switching it on but it just doesnt turn on.
2. Now when I place the BA in the cradle, the phone turns on but it just keeps on restarting.
Somebody please help me out.
The phone worked fine until when I tried to tape the body and the battery with cello tape, that is when it went dead, and now I have the two problems mentioned above.
Help me guys,
Thanks a ton all.

try a new battery.
and check the battery lock..

You might have messed up the pins connecting the battery to the device. Also, the little lock for the battery could be damaged as well. Finally, your backup battery could have died also. Hopefully this will give you some guidance towards the root of the problem. Chef has a disassembly guide in his tutorial.

well thanks guys for those responses. My updates are:
1. Since the battery was over 3 years old, I have ordered a new battery (yeah i know i should've checked with another battery first but damn noone else i know uses this phone). So till my new battery arrives I just got to wait.
2. Regarding ezthunder's replies... well I checked the battery connectors on the phone, they seem to look alright to me (physically), how do i test them to check if they're alright, pls help.
Also, regarding the backup battery, damn i would now need to search the net to find a new one.
The battery locking clip seems to be fine and is locks the battery in place, if this is damaged, I'd be freaking damned to try and get this one fixed.
So guys, any DIY suggestions to get these things fixed would be welcome as I dont wanna brick my BA, freaking just put in a new LCD digitizer.

Let us know what happens when the new battery arrives and we'll go from there.

well my battery arrived yesterday, i put it in and tried to switch it on but alas nothing. Charged the battery full and put it in but no start up.
Just the same old problem, phone keeps restarting when in the cradle but nothing when out.
Help me guys............

Well still no response from the forum, however, I have a few updates and hope this could make it easier for someone to figure out the problem:
A strange thing happened yesterday -
1. when I disconnected the flex cable of the buttons and the keypad on the front panel from the main board and put the entire thing on the charging cradle. IT WORKED. I mean it didnt do the restarting problem, it worked perfect. However when I took it out of the cradle, it wont power on. While it was on on the cradle, i checked the internal battery and it showed 100% charge, which means that the internal battery is good.
2. Now back when I connected the flex cable to the connector on the board and power it on - nothing happens and when put in the cradle - the same restarting issue right after the statup screen.
So based on the above - what are your conclusions, is there a problem with the flex cable connector but then in that case it should start when taken out of the cradle.
And yes, its a new battery that I just got. So guess its not a problem with the battery...
Help me guys. I really want to get back my BA... it was such a pleasure to see it working in the cradle with mentioned in point 1 above.
PS. I left it on the charge for the whole night yesterday but no change when taken out of the cradle - just desperate to try anything to get it to work.

Judging from this, it seems that there is a problem with the motherboard itself. I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me. You can probably get a new BA from Market Place. I have seen a few members selling them lately.

*bump* still waiting for some good soul to help me out with the prob... i really dont wanna lose this phone...blue angels are real beautiful babies to have around...

Dead XDA IIs (BA)

Hi all,
Noob user here
I've a problem with my XDA IIs that I thought I'd get some advice on rather than dispensing of it. Basically...it won't switch on. When plugged into mains the red light comes on for a bit then goes off.
Phone was working perfectly, put it in my pocket got home and nothing, assumed it crashed but doesn't respond to anything. Has been sat on my wardrobe for over a year but could do with using it for sat nav.
Any advice on what to try? Could be the battrey but don't wanna fork out extra cash for a new one as it's even more money lost
If I wasn't to fix it, any idea on what it's worth? Screen is unmarked and it has all standard accessories with it.
Ta
Save you BA man! More or less it's the battery (I think). Or the internal battery is drained to 0%. Have you tried charging it first for a couple of minutes?
Yeah tried charging overnight. Charge light comes on for a bit then goes out. Does the same thing when connected via usb, red light comes on but it doesn't register on the pc.
Was working fine but then one day it just woudn't come on. Would like to keep it if I can, got a touch diamond too now, but this is actually a better phone to use!
try to use a different battery first. And let's see what happens next.
Yeah, I may have to but want to avoid as much extra cost as I can
Bit more info, using the docking station plugged into the mains:
Batt alone - Charge light on dock comes on.
BA alone - Red light on BA comes on.
BA with batt attached - no lights on.
Any ideas??
can you try to put it in bootloader mode?

Don't know how to
Plus it doesn't actualls switch on or register on the PC, so can I do much to it?
It's just like what I did with my BA a few days ago, I am flashing it with a new ROM and while in the process I intentionally unplugged the cable during the process and I got an error on my PC and my BA does not turn on anymore. I tried to put it in bootloader mode a couple of times and it did and I re-flashed it again. And it works. Check the wiki...

no need to buy at once, borrow first, then if your BA works using another's batt, thats the time you need to decide spending... cheers
The same problem I had!!!!!!!!!!
I had this trouble... and... YUP!!!!! is the backup battery.
So you cant charge your BA via USB if the main batt reaches less than 35% so keep it safely above 35% men...
BTW... if you have your batt less than 35% the OS can be runing just a little seconds so your batt is dying is not truth that it have 35% it has almost 5% trust me...
Yes!!!! the red led Turns On a little then Goes off... so sad isnt it?... now your backup batt is almost 0% thats why your red led appears... so...
Get a craddle USB-AC_Charging base it has a backtrace to charge apart the batt charge it individual. Once you get a full charged main batt, let your BA rest a little on the freezer to obtain a little power of the Backup batt... (YES ON THE FREEZER!!! ) at least 3 minutes before you plug the main batt.
It wakes up the device... maybe it becomes a few seconds on but... is enough.... if it starts... cradle your entire device on the craddle and wait till its full charged... again the green led appears cause the main is full but let it charge more and more... caus there is no led indicator for backup batt.
NOP!!!!!!! I dont do the freezer trick when i had this problem... cause i get it works faster than you...
Hope this works... post your adventure men....
Red Hanks/Que - Tried both those (ok, maybe not the freezer bit!), and stil no joy. Gonna go out over the weekend and see if a repair shop can try another battrey. Otherwise I may be saying goodbye :-(
Phezthie - The BA was rare when new, now they are non-existent. No chance of borrowing a friends.
Cheers for the help guys.
Well it is a nice idea!
you can make a modded battery for BA with two nokia bl 5c taiwan batts... check the post on winmo 6 subforum.
In my opinion. it's the internal battery since you didn't use the phone for over a year. Hope you can make your BA alive again because there's so much nice apps waiting out there...
I was using it daily before this though, it suddenly stopped working one day. It did however crash a few times before it finally went. I'll have a read up on changing internal batt. Red...I'm gonna try and save it!
Ok...keep us posted and good luck mate!

both batteries, main and backup, could be the reason thats why you need to determine which one of it by isolating the cause of the problem. to know if its the main battery, you can improvise by using different battery with same voltage rating (3.7volts, no need to worry as to the Ah rating), but be sure to connect the proper polarity to the BA's correct pin terminals, otherwise, power circuit of your BA will be compromised.
As to the backup battery, you can do nothing it but to replace if defective. the "freezer trick" is actually one of the shattering myths of electronics and cannot be relied upon to have an optimal performance, as it neither charge nor extend the life of the battery. it simply reduces the the power dissipation (power loss due to heat and resistance) during the initial boot so that it can draw enough power to run unit in its chargeable condition.
but since it is not prossible to borrow or no available battery can be used as a test unit, I suggest that you try the first procedure aforementioned, this of course, if you are familiar with battery polarities and know the corresponding terminals of the unit. regards
Hmmmm, my diamond has a 3.7v batt...never thought of that!
I'm near preston, with the origional battery . .
I'm near preston, with the origional battery . . fully charged, will last 6/12Hrs=using it, P.M. me ur postcode + House #, I will send it to you to try
(stick with the BA, new HTC Elf is half the PPC, that the BA is!!!!)
FleaBay'd a 2400mAh (incl shipping)=under £10GBP !!! (late last year)
#===#===# Currently Being Pimped (1st go!) #===#===#
Cheers mate, but I've just paid for one off ebay so I'll just wait for that to come now. If it doesn't do it I may be selling up...
Fingers crossed
Ok, new battrey arrived this morning. Gave it a charge and just tried it...
....no change
Screen, green and blue top corner and red end call lights momentarily flash when I press the power button. Then nothing.
Both batteries seem to charge in the cradle but not in the phone.
So, any other suggestions oh technically superior ones??
Btw, I received 2 batteries this morning, so I've listed the new one to get some cash back here:

if your phone truly isn't charging the battery you can always hotwire it to the positive and negative wires from a clipped usb cord.
holding the wire to the terminals of the battery for a few minutes can get you running again.
however...
I have found that often if you just unplug the phone, remove the battery from the phone and then discharge the phone (pressing power button) then reinstall battery, you can then plug in the phone to get a charge...
let it charge for 15-20 minutes and then turn it on without the powercord.
resume charging once running.
I'd advise against the hotwiring method, since unless you have a lot of experience in wiring you run a risk of damaging something due to shorting wires, put it this way, I am experienced in electronics assembly, and wouldn't try this unless there was no other way.
However my method is similar to the one mnjm suggests, I have run out of battery once or twice on android, and I pull the battery, replace it, plug in the charger, wait until the light goes out, disconnect charger, pull and reinsert battery again, power on the phone, wait until it starts the second stage of booting, ( bootanimation), then plug in the charger. Usually works fine.
Or try this:
Pull the battery, replace it, plug in the charger, don't wait wait until the light goes out, power on the phone while light is ON.
I have run out of battery many times while testing battery patch an this always worked for me.
My battery meter was acting up lately and I decided to let my phone die. Let it run out of power to correct the battery meter. It was either 100% charged or less then 1% charge.
Now it won't boot. I see the X animation and nothing happens. I just keep watching the animation. The animation keeps resetting. I hate to think that my Android installation corrupted just by letting the battery run dry?
Will it even charge if I plug it in? I wanna try reinstalling Android to get it working again.
**EDIT**
Yep, corrupt installation.
I have no idea why draining the battery would do that, but it did. I reinstalled Android and it booted again.
My phone lost charge overnight the other day and I found plugging in usb power and using the hard reset button made it boot and then it would charge up OK.

yeah...I was regretting typing that.
obviously if you are not confident in your understanding of what you are doing then AVOID playing with bare wires.
you don't have to fear electricity...
but you do need to respect it.
I know you are confident, just making sure people knew that there were potential dangers, it's not that a cut down usb lead is dangerous as far as shock hazards go, more the remote possibility that a shorted lead could perhaps cause major battery problems, since hotwiring them, while it does charge the battery, provides no short-circuit protection, it is remotely possible, (but unlikely), that this could cause fire hazards.
If I was really desperate I might do this with a zener diode rather than just bare wires.

One of the dangers, that's why it should be fixed in the NBH, any chances for a fix, anyone working on this at the moment ?
I'm thinking of buying the motorola milestone, but it's still expensive (350 euro's).

I can actually buy a phone with my upgrade discount, but I love my Kaiser too much to let it go. Plus it's a better learning experience when dealing with Android.
If I bought a new Android phone, I wouldn't do much of anything with it, besides use it as a smart phone.

Seriously? By the time they unlock it, there will be a new phone to buy.
Meh, besides, I never lose my old phones. They turn into "hand me downs". My sister has my old HTC Wizard right now. If things get really bad, I still have my old Nokia NGage. Yes, I own one of those.
Same thing has just happened to me, except I can't turn the phone back on at all now.
Was running the latest Kaiser NBH from DZO whilst using Myn's rom, I had a number of issues with battery life using android with it going from 75% charge to 0% and soft resetting by itself.
Anyways this time it hasn't woken up after doing just that, it was working fine then it turned off and I can't get it back on.
It just won't power on, there is no charging light but then again that only came on once android was booted never on startup with the android NBH, it was fine with Windows Mobile.
I have removed the battery, put it back in but nothing.
Swapped out for another working battery that I have spare, but nothing.
Tried a hard reset, still nothing.
It's just not starting at all now.
The phone was working and was on the side not charging and all of sudden it turned off and hasn't come back on since.
Bit annoyed.

Sorted it now, note to self and anyone else who has done this.
Usually what occurs is when the phone powers off when the battery has not been calibrated properly it requires you to do a hard reset using the stylus.
Anyway's I did that in the dark and accidentally pushed the stylus into the charger port on the phone and pushed a pin into another so It was short circuiting. Luckily I didn't damage the pins or the phone and was able to straighten it so it wasn't making contact with the other pins.
I'm happy again, its only really a test phone tbh, I have had a HTC Hero for some time now...
Best Regards,
ST1Cl<^^aN
Like most problems, it's due to the kernel. Even if the bugs get sorted out, there's still plenty of room for improvement.
Lets say the following is working 100%.
phone
GPS
3D
power management
wifi
bluetooth
USB
camera
etc
There's always a need for something. Like upgrading 3D to OpenGL ES 2.0, or getting support for ext3/ext4. That's a long way to go and very few people are willing to do it on their spare time.
In the most severe cases, people had to pool together a reward for someone to include support for something.
Considering how similar the Kaiser/Polaris/Vogue is, you could combine this group of people to get something done. There's a lot of talent, but it's spread far apart.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Charging Problem Backlight Keeps Coming On

I am REALLY unhappy with this phone. Aside from the poor signal and other issues well known to the Nexus, I now have a phone that has a charging problem. Sometimes when I plug the phone in, it does not recognize that it is plugged in and will not charge. This is not an issue in itself, because if I unplug and plug back in a few times it will eventually charge. The big problem is when it is NOT plugged in. The phone will often switch between charging and not charging on the battery indicator.... even though it is NOT plugged in.
I read up on this and found that... shocker.. this is just one more issue plaguing Nexus owners. The real problem for me is that everytime the phone switches from thinking it is charging to not charging, about every two seconds mostly, the screen comes on. This results in the screen constantly going on an off and the battery draining extremely fast. It is 8:17 am, and I unplugged the phone at 6:40 this morning. In less than an hour and a half, the battery has fallen to 38% and I have not used the phone at all today. It is sitting on my desk, flashing like a disco club.
I have searched but have only found an option to keep the phone ON while charging. Is there an option or app available that will prevent the screen from lighting everytime it thinks I have plugged it in to charge? I am rooted, so any option known would be helpful.
I cannot wait to throw this thing in the garbage, but I am not happy with any of the other options currently available. I like the look of the Galaxy S3 but the Gnex has left a bad taste in my mouth for Samsung... it was my first Samsung phone and I'm not sure if I should judge the product line on all the problems I have had with this phone. I loved the HTC Incredible it just got a little old.
Can anyone help me with this problem... please! It is now at 30% since I typed the last few lines. I can sit and watch this thing draining like a bathtub.
Jim
try changing the usb port on the phone
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...zon-LTE-Micro-USB-Charge-Port-Main-Mic/9641/1
I had this issue caused by water damage quite recently - it was in my pocket during some absolutely unprecedented rain here in the UK, and although it seemed I could charge it without problems, when it was off the charger it'd be confused and flash on and off as you say. I just threw it in some rice and took it out at midnight, problem solved (whether the rice was actually responsible for solving it, I have no idea). Has your phone been used in the rain or anything like that, or been in the pocket of clothes that aren't very 'rainproof' during rain? Could be it.
Is it the charger? I had a bad car charger that did the same thing. If not, I would contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Sent from my GSM Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I read about the water damage being a possible culprit but I cannot remember it getting wet anytime recently. It is not the charger, it does the same thing with two different chargers and the car charger. It does actually charge, thats not the problem. The problem is when I am away from the charger the screen just comes on all the time and the battery is drained rapidly. It has been having issues for a week or two now but just recently started having the problem when not actually plugged in.
Someone just needs to make an app with an option NOT to turn on the touchscreen when first plugged in.

Have you been able to fix your issue? I've had zero issues with my Galaxy Nexus for months, and now I'm having the same problem you describe. Initially I thought it was the ROM, but last Sunday I noticed that the phone will simply not sleep without being charged. The USB port appeared to be bent downward, so I used a tiny flat head screwdriver to raise the port. This seemed to fix the issue for a few minutes, but then the phone kept waking up. It's murdering my battery, and I'd like to fix this situation. The problem seems to be intermittent, and occasionally it will work for hours at a time. This leads me to believe that the problem could be internal.
I'm wondering if you tried anything else? I don't have a problem replacing the USB port myself because it seems like an easy and cheap fix. I'm not a novice when it comes to repairing phones, but I'd rather not open the device quite yet.
The new part is $8.00 shipped, and the seller is in the US. You can't go wrong. I will report back once I fix the problem.
Not really, the problem just sort of went away a week ago... I'm getting the Galaxy S3 end of October so I'm not going to replace the USB port. I messed around with the usb thing too, bent it with a knife so it wasnt touching anything. I also tried cleaning the contacts and blowing it out with air... not sure if any of these things helped or not. Like I said if I made it worse didnt matter as I'm getting GS3 soon. So for now its working but not sure why or how or how long...

@calaski8123 -> how would I replace the charging port? Should I contact samsung/google?? I have the exact same issue being discussed here and its driving me nuts. And I got this phone just a couple months ago so getting a new phone is not a solution...

If its new I'd take it back under warranty. If not, you can buy the parts on ebay and other sites... Search the Forums here, there are details. You can also search Youtube for a guide. Samsung probably would fix but it would cost much more.
Mine is better, but not sure what fixed it. The battery still doesn't last but half a day so I'm still getting the S3 in week or so.

Gnex Charging Issue
Hi all! Yes, I am another one of the unfortunate owners of a Gnex with this issue. I wanted to send out a reply to everyone that says to replace the USB charging port. I just had mine replaced, and it did not fix the problem. I have also tried different batteries, and I have read where some people are fixing this by *** gently *** bending the USB connector up ( toward the screen ). That also did not fix my problem. A few days ago I installed AOKP 4.2.1, and that was ineffective as well. I am stumped. My Samsung Fascinate was a very good phone, but the Gnex is really making me wonder if I ever want another Samsung. Has anyone found a solution for this? Unfortunately for me, I bought mine used and don't have the option of returning to Verizon for help. Thanks!

Galaxy Nexus Won't Charge

Hey Guys,
Over the last year or so I've had intermittent charging issues with my Galaxy Nexus. About 4 months ago is when it first started happening, the phone would either not charge or only charge when it is turned off. Somehow the issue was resolved through tons of troubleshooting, I'm not even sure what fixed it or why it started working again.
Same thing happened about 2 weeks ago, except this time it won't charge at all. Then 2 days later all of a sudden started charging again. Now it's happening again today, I have no idea what is going on or why this handset won't charge properly. The phone won't turn on with just the charger in and the battery out either.
I've tried various chargers including the OEM charger, I've tried up to 6 different chargers and 7 seperate micro-USB B cords. Nothing. I've tried a brand new battery that a friend bought for his phone before he threw it in and no results.
At this point I think it's the USB charger board, however I'm not sure why it would not work and then work again. Does anyone have any ideas or any solutions? I've read thousands of threads on this, from this forum and many others and have gone through some ridiculous troubleshooting methods.
SCH-I515 Korean Version.
Seriously, anyhelp is appreciated.
As of now, all of a sudden it will charge while it's off. But only to about 4% then it just stops charging. It will not charge while it is on at all.
Because it's getting worse and worse?
Relock bootloader, and return it in for warranty, if you can. I'm afraid there's not much help if you already checked for damage to the USB port.

hi
had the same problem until a few minutes ago.
received my usb/charging flex part today and changed it just before to post here.
took me like 20 min, really easy to do, everything works perfectly and i also took time to clean up a bit the phone inside of some dirts and change the housing i bought with the flex part.
As my screen is under protection since the beginning (4 months old), and that i recently bought a 2000mah battery, well i have to say that i have a new phone ready to handle the new year easily!
operation is easy and you will find plenty of videos on youtube showing how to change the usb flex (7€/$ , +/-) so pretty cheap.
Good luck
Why not buy an external battery charger and a spare battery?

I'd get a replacement daughterboard and switch it out yourself. It's easy dude, just like a previous poster already said. I just did it myself, took me all of 20 minutes and cost me $10. ifixit.com has a step by step direction sheet, if you have any questions feel free to contact me about it.
Try the following:
1.) Turn off your phone.
2.) Get a flat head screwdriver (small one)
3.) Push the flat connector inside the microusb port up. (It often gets bent downwards because it's so thin compared to other phones...)
4.) Boot into the bootloader
5.) Hit volume down until restart bootloader appears. Press power button.
6.) Start phone manually.

i dont know why, but this fixed it for me, for a short while. now the charging is intermittent and seems to come and go as it pleases.
Hi,
I had the same problem of ghost charging, it started with phone not charging when connected to charger and then randomly showing charging...
Now discovered it causes vbus_tuna_otg wake lock, resulting in high system usage in settings> battery and not letting phone go to deep sleep, causing battery drain.

Same Problem
I've come into the same problem with my Galaxy Nexus as well. If my phone is turned on, my phone will recognize that a charger is plugged in but the battery will not charge at all. If the phone is off and plugged in, the charging screen won't appear. I've tried multiple chargers and cords, 2 different batteries, and even replaced the micro usb and board, but the problem hasn't changed at all. I've managed to charge my batteries with an external charger but would like to get my phone back to normal working condition. Does anyone think that changing the actual motherboard itself might solve the problem?

I had this problem before, using something small and flat to push the charging connector off the housing will work for awhile. The pin in the charging port is bent down and is very thin it's easy to lift up just use a tiny bit of force to lift it up. The pin touching the housing is causing a short and that is causing your no charge while it's on and mine even went as far as draining my battery very quickly. I did research and found alot of people having this issue on the gnex. I eventually had to turn mine in for replacement, no problems since. Hopefully yours is still under warranty or you can buy the peice that is broken and replace yourself, there is a post above saying what to do for that.
Looks like my phone developed this problem. It sometimes won't charge be it via my pogo dock or USB cord. It seems to start taking a charge after I pop out the battery and then put it back in. I'm going to order another battery and see if that is the problem.
Thank yoiu!!
solved my problem!! I am in your debt
popping the battery out just worked for me too

I just did the remove battery trick as well and it worked. I just noticed my battery not charging yesterday but figured it was because I was trying to use a different charging in my dad's car. got to work where i left my normal charger and no luck.

That's good, I tried it a few times but the issue still pops up. To be fair though, I've had this phone and battery since launch day... Almost three years old. I ordered a new battery so hopefully I won't have the issue anymore... And I won't be surprised if my battery life is a little better too.

The Galaxy Nexus is nowhere near three years old. Your phone would be 18 months old if you had it since launch.

Excuse me, two years. According to Samsung their lithium batteries have a life of about 500 cycles. So my point is still valid, my battery is probably just on it's way out. I'll find out for sure when my new one comes tomorrow.

Yeah, since battery life hasn't exactly been the strong point of the GN and some of us had to go though a complete cycle daily, I suspect a lot of folks are going to be seeing more and more issues. Not too long ago, I had a battery that failed in such a way that it would randomly crash the phone and had to be pulled in order to allow a reboot. I would've suspected anything but the battery in that case.

This kind of worked for me, but the "boot into bootloader and restart it" killed my phone, don't know why. After a lot of a hassle i got it on, with 2% left, again not charging...tried to repush the connector towards the center and now i cant get my charger into the phone, maybe overbend it...what to do?...
I have a strange problem, my Gnex does not charge the battery, first i thought that it was the battery so, I tested the battery on other phone and it charged just fine, and then i ordered the usb/charging assemble from ebay and replaced on my gnex, and still not charging the battery, but when i connect the phone to the pc it recognize it immediately, but still won't charge the battery, anybody has an idea of what my problem is?? and how can i solve it?
Please help!!!

Galaxy Nexus Charging while not on charger. Help needed

Hello all, I wanted to ask everyone's advice on what to do with my phone.
A few days ago I took my phone off of the charger and I noticed the battery icon still had the lightning bolt still active. I turned the screen off and then magically it turned back on. I figured maybe I'd pop out the battery and power cycle the phone, maybe that would fix it. Well, it did. Then maybe 2 days later the same thing happened all over again, so I decided to follow the same process that I did before but, to no no avail.
If anyone has any suggestions, tips or possible solutions to this problem please let me know as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance!
Go take a look at the micro usb charging terminal on the bottom of your phone, it should be touching the inside walls of its housing. This is causing the phone to think its charging sooo all you need to do is get a thin knife and push the micro usb back into place..be careful
You may have liquid damage.
