I wanted to factory reset my phone for an improvement in performance and wanted to know what things the backup feature saves.

Definitely not a 100% accurate reply, but going off the 'backup' folder in the SD card, I'd assume:
Bookmarks
SMS/MMS
Contacts/History
Homescreen Customization
And other stuff which I can't decipher.
Again, don't hold me to it
does not retain homescreen customization and from what i recall it does not keep your sms
i recommend using mybackup pro as it backs up everything you want it to, including apps to the sd card.

So I've been using mikfroyo for a bit now, then I wanted to try and switch to CyanogenMod 6.6.1(i think?)
Regardless, I did all the main steps...backing up all the apps...nandroid backup...wipe of everything...install ROM however a few issues arose that I wanted to address when I flashed Cyanogen..these issues all caused me to restore my mikfroyo..
1. When I try and restore all my apps and data with Titanium, it asks me to install EACH AND EVERY app that I ever downloaded before. Is there a way I can just auto accept them all? Am I pressing the right buttons for backing up and restoring? I usually run the batch operation "Backup all user apps + system data" and when restoring I always select "Restore all apps with data"
2. I could not post my original wallpaper that I had from mikfroyo, it would either use a random cyanogen themed wallpaper, or the screen would just go blank
3. All my saved game data was officially gone. Honestly this was the biggest issue, playing a game where you level up for months just to see it all go to waste is just demoralizing.
If anyone has the answers to these issues I'd be very grateful. I'd really like to explore beyond the world of MikFroYo!

3) If you saved with Titanium this shouldn't be an issue
1) there is a way to not have to install all apps automatically but you have to purchase the paid app of titanium backup.
2) which wallpaper are you trying to use??? I also don't understand this question.
3) with titanium backup it saves the data for the apps you backup. Bit you need to make sure that you choose the correct batch to backup.

1) that is a limitation of the free version sadly. Titanium is one of the few apps I can honestly say was worth paying for & now it's actually on the market unlike the way I had to buy it
2) all old wallpapers will be gone from that directory sorry :/
3) you just wiped EVERYTHING! However, with titanium you'll be able to restore game data hopefully
sorry for being undescriptive about number 2, but what i mean is that when i used mikfroyo i just had a wallpaper of a hot girl, and when i switched to CMod it automatically set the wallpaper as soemthing from CMod of course, but when i tried to set it back to ANYTHING else of mine the wallpaper would either switch to another CMod wallpaper, or the wallpaper would just be black
also i hear a lot about mybackup as an alternative, can anyone confirm that my issues wont occur using this app as opposed to titanium? (saved data/installing each and every app one by one)

I used MyBackup Root and it was pretty seamless to me. I've never used titanium so I don't know how to compare it. MyBackup Root does APK's and their data though, and it's all automatic
Coming from the Touch Pro 2 and the Windows Mobile side of things for the last decade, I am wondering if there is something like PPCPimBackup for Android? This was a small little utility that would back up SMS/MMS/Call Logs/Email/Contacts and some other settings and files when specified. I kept a copy on my SD Card so that when / if I had to take my phone in for repair, I could backup everything before I handed it over to the Sprint Tech. Now that I am on an android device, I would like to find something with similar functionality. My E4GT has been experiencing the random screen taps / touches that someone mentioned a week or so ago and I want to take it in and have them look at it and want to make sure I don't lose my call logs and sms logs if they should want to factory reset or replace my phone. Any suggestions for a free application?

I have used pim backup when I had my TP2 but never had the desire to find something like that here. With google all your contacts are backed up on goggles servers. T
Also if your phone is rooted you can use titanium backup for your Apps or just do a nand backup through recovery and back up everything.... ROM.. Contacts.... Apps.... Mesages.... Emails ect.

Titanium backup will. You backup the launcher and when you restore it will restore the screens. You may have to replace the widgets though..... No biggie though.

Why would you choose Titanium over MyBackup? I know that a majority of the users have Titanium but I don't understand why. What are the differences? I have MyBackupPro and it has worked flawlessly forever! FIGHT!
I've had Titanium for so long, I can't be bothered to try something new/different..
It just works.
With options like freezing apps, pulling backups from nands, and controlling market links, Titanium is hard to beat. Add to that syncing to dropbox and it is a pretty good package.

Freezing, wiping cache, and wiping data are also available on mybackup pro, controling market links also. How would syncing to dropbox be helpful?

Your backup is stored safely in your dropbox in case of an sd card crash or your phone gets lost or stolen. You will still have your backup to put on the replacement.

okay, thats pretty cool, other than that, it looks like a wash. I don't think I need to buy Titanium, MBP works fine, and also offers the option of storing backups online.
After almost 1 year using MBP I tried Titanium Backup. TB is faster at backing up system data and users apps and also restoring but a little too complicated compared to MBP. Also MBP can restore apps directly to the SD card(only apps with that option obviously). Maybe TB can do it too but I can't find that option.

Right, MyBackup Pro can do ALL item titanium can do, and more.
It can backup the SMS, MMS, contacts, other system data from ANY Android version to a different Android version, so you can go from Android 2.x to Android 4.x, which titanium cannot do.
If you want faster backup and restores of Applications and their Data, you can turn on the Busy Box option in the options of MyBackup (Pro).
Also, MyBackup Root is FREE and does a lot more than the free titanium
When I do full restore of system data on Titanium I get all my settings back and have had no problem going from Froyo to Gingerbread with a backup. I don't think you have used it in a while.

As well as scheduled back ups and the customizability ( made up word?) of the backups
I bought both and went ultimately with Titanium. Mainly, it was because, at the time, MyBackup did not have a master page to see what apps were frozen. You had to select each one at a time. In Titanium Backup you could see all your apps and the frozen ones had a blue bar highlight.
Titanium. The end. I used to use mbp, but I got fc's or the app just wouldn't show up after restoring

The best thing to do is really to try both.
You can get the free MyBackup Root application, which gives you just about everything you need, and the free titanium, and try them out.
MyBackup Pro does have all items Root has, plus a few more items like freezing/disabling bloatware, market linking/detaching, etc...
It's seems they are almost identical Apps. The main difference is the interface,
My Backup Pro seems to be a LOT more user friendly whereas Titanium is for more technical minded people who love control over every little thing.
My Backup Pro - Simple interface and seems not to need root, good for the normal user or the occasional rom flashing.
Titanium Backup PRO - Geared more to the technical minded who likes exploring and control, and compulsive rom flashers.
MyBackup Pro doesn't have DropBox functionality because they also make money out of selling more space online for your backups.
A way around it is to manually get your backups on your SD Card to your DropBox yourself.
In the end it comes down to a matter of preference, as they both much do the same thing
I use Titanium and I like to be able to choose every little thing I'm backing up but on the other hand there is the case of the 'unfriendly' interface (which I gotten used by now but had to do some reading on some bits).
Titanium really needs a Usability Engineer(?) on their team. They would benefit having a 'Normal' and an 'Expert' mode for their interface.
Agreed. Titanium Backup should revamp the interface or give us a choice of interfaces: Classic or Simple
I use MBP, but I don't like it. When I first used it on Froyo and Gingerbread, it rocked. Now on Jelly Bean it regularly force closes, it doesn't copy all the data for applications, some applications don't backup or restore properly. I have never had any problems with Titanium, ever. It's just so darn cumbersome.
I have used Titanium backup on 3 different devices, from Froyo to KitKat, over the past 3 years. It has worked fine thru it all. Backups & Restores are a snap to do, and are reliable. Only problems ever has been an occasional hang up, where I have had to do a shutdown, reboot, but it did not seem to affect the restore.
Love MBP, never had a problem.

MyBackup Pro now supports Dropbox
Hey guys the new version 4.2 of MyBackup Pro now allows you to use your Dropbox account as the Cloud storage option for Backups and Restore. You can use this by running the app and hitting Menu->Options then select the "Cloud Storage Location" option and selecting Dropbox.

Quick question about MIUI's Backup App. I haven't used it yet, but I was wondering if I use it, what all will it actually backup for when I eventually switch to a new phone, root and install a build of miui. Obviously contacts don't matter because they're tied to my google account anyway, and apps don't matter either (and I doubt it backs up app data like game saves and stuff, right?) but I'm guessing it will backup my themes, folders, arrangement of icons, widgets I currently have active... What else? Also, when I get the new phone, i'm guessing I'd have to wait until I have all my apps & widgets reinstalled before running the MIUI Backup Restore option or else how's it going to rearrange my icons and all that after they're installed? So that would in theory be my LAST step after getting a new phone, right?

do not choose to backup/restore your contacts. When you use MIUI's built in back up for that, it will not sync with your google account, I found out the hard way.
MIUI's built in back up is a bad ass feature! When you back-up apps and data, I'm fairly certain that includes games saves and whatnot, I don't play games on my phone so I'm not 100% on that. But the homescreen backup actually remembers where you have your apps put, the location on the screen, folders, etc. the only thing that doesn't restore when you do this are widget's, I'm always having to put my weather widget back when I do an update.
You can also back up your data to the MIUI cloud servers when you sign up for an account
MIUI's Backup/Restore Application is amazing. It backs up literally EVERYTHING on your phone and when you upgrade your MIUI ROM, it restores EVERYTHING back to how it was before you upgraded, its one of the best features on MIUI, in my opinion. It takes out the hassle of re-installing applications. As far as I know, it should save your current game saves and states. It saves everything about an application. But make sure and not to backup your Contacts because they are synced to your Google Account. It duplicates your Contacts when you restore.
Hi All. First time poster. I've been an iOS guy since the 3GS, but over the last 6 months or so started to look at moving away from Apple due to their price structure. After picking up a N7 2 for a fraction of the cost of an rMini, I couldn't be happier and might never go back to Apple. I'm still getting use to the differences between the ecosystems and the differences in how things worked. It's amazing how many things are different.
The one nice thing I liked about Apple/iTunes/iOS was the way you could backup a device and when you restored it even GUI preferences were restored. So if you had a News folder all your news apps were in the folder in the same location on the screen.
I've done some searching, and I know there are some third party apps that do local backups but I haven't been able to find if there is anything, including the stock Google backup, that will do a backup to include system settings to the same level of detail as iTunes did. Can someone point me in the right directions? Does Titanium Backup do this? What all does the stock backup program backup? When you restore an Android device is it smart enough to redownload all the apps that were on the device? Is there a part of this question that I'm missing?
System settings don't get restored for the most part. This is due to it causing problems (especially when flashing ROMs). Homescreens can be saved if you use a third party launcher such as nova or apex. Titanium can backup system apps like settings and restore it, but that can cause major issues, so just avoid it. Stock backup can backup apps, photos, pretty much just core things. When restoring, there's an option to allow the device to restore all your apps.

So what I'm hearing is that if you want to make sure that you get a good restore it's best to always start from scratch.

Not always. The restoring of apps is usually only an issue with restoring data of ones that were used on ICS and then you flashed a jb ROM. I've always restored app and data with titanium and never had an issue. Just don't do that with system apk's.
