Sorry for asking. Did i understood correctly, that T won't let you use 3G unless phone is purchased from them?

Tmo has a weird 3G frequency, and this phone's radio doesn't support it.

a nexus one is $530 and on contract there is a certain required plan that doesn't support family plans.
HTC desire and Tmobile
So if i understand it correctly,
Desire is NOT coming to T mobile for Sure ..
It will not work with T mobile frequencies, esp 3G network
which carrier will it work with ... better not AT&T
so basically no point of buying an unlocked phone then ..

It is rumored that AT&T will get the Desire. Wait it out until April-June. Also, if Telstra gets the Desire, AT&T customers can POSSIBLY import one and MAYBE catch 3G.
As far as "T" goes, I don't know if they will get the Desire since...well...there is the NX-1.
Either way, you will not be able to get 3G speed if you import the Desire. So if you want 3G, go with the Nexus. If not...go with the Desire
Does T-Mo UK have the same 3G frequencies and whatnot as T-Mo US? Because according to MoDaCo's webiste, T-Mo UK IS getting the Desire. So if T-Mo US doesn't, we could always import and throw in our sim cards :]

The UK Desire wont work on US TMo 3G. Its radio only does 2100/900 and 2100 is what TMo UK uses. TMo US uses the 1700 frequency. Ironic that the Nexus 1 radio does 1700/2100/900 so it works on TMo UK 3G.

Post your speed USA EDGE

Is anyone using the A8181 on USA EDGE network. Would it be possible to post your download and upload speeds? I have one coming in the mail and I haven't decided what to do with it.
I am thinking of selling it to get a Nexus One, which I sold to get a Slide.
is 900kbs/sec out of the question for edge? 1mb?
Yes, 900 kb/sec is out of the question for edge.
EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) or EGPRS provides data transfer rates significantly faster than GPRS or HSCSD. EDGE increases the speed of each timeslot to 48 kbps and allows the use of up to 8 timeslots, giving a maximum data transfer rate of 384 kbps.

Remember, that is max possible speed. The real-life speed is much lower.
Thank you. I don't think I can live with 328 max. My slide is getting 3000+, on the new updates. That is in the peak in city though, in my neighborhood I average 1200 or so. Looks like I will never get to know the Desire.
You didn't understand what I quoted. That is the max speed of EDGE technology, it has nothing to do with Desire, Slide, or whatever. That is the technology capacity.
Are you sure Slide is on EDGE and not on 3G or HSDPA?
My mistake, I understood. I forgot to tell you my service provider, sorry. I have a USA t-mobile and I pay for 3G service.
If I use the A8181 in the USA it will only get EDGE, SO FOR ME**key words** it will not go faster than the EDGE technology will allow it.
On my slide I am able to pick up USA 3g and hsdpa+ as you can tell from the speeds I listed
My low end speeds are around 700 and that would have been enough hypothetically. But I am an idiot, because I should just disable my 3G and run an edge test from my own neighborhood.
Thank you again though, you gave me EXACTLY the answer i was looking for, and quickly.

I wish man. The A8183 will work on USA ATT 3G. I am stuck with T-mobile.
If I had ATT I would look into the A8183 for sure.

I have a A8183 that I bought in London and use it here in the US on AT&T...no 3G only EDGE.
3G bands on this phone are limited to 900/2100, AT&T uses 850 and 1900.
A8183 is the Aussie model, not the Euro model, which is A8181.
A8183 = 850/1900mhz 3G
A8181 = 900/2100mhz 3G
Actually if you look online the A8183 uses 850/2100 bands for the Data.

Oops, you are correct.
A8183 on US 3G
Is AT&T the only US 3G network that the A8183 will work on ?
I ask because I am trying to find a phone (ideally a Desire) that will work on UK 3G and US 3G.
The A8183 does 850/2100 which I believe will let me do this ?
thanks
Alternatively, you could get a Nexus One as this will work on TMo in the US, and on UK networks.

Dave

AT&T Data Plan Pricing

I apologize if a thread like this already exists, I couldn't find it.
I'm planning on purchasing the Telus Desire with 850/1900Mhz 3G for use on AT&T once it comes out. However, I want to confirm that I can use the "dumbphone" unlimited data plan (which is $15 or $10 for families) instead of the regular, overpriced, capped smartphone plans. I do this currently on my Motorola Milestone so I want to make sure it works okay with the Desire. Can anyone on AT&T confirm this for me?
... nobody on AT&T will be able to confirm this with you because not even Canadians have this phone yet. But if they don't know the Milestone IMEI they probably won't know the Telus Desire IMEI.
Right, I know it's not out yet but I was more looking for someone with the regular Desire on AT&T who could tell me. (I'm figuring AT&T will treat all Desires the same way)
The imei is not registered with ATT. Therefore you can have as I do a 10 or 15 dollar data for quick messaging phones and standard flips.
You will have 3g wherever there is 850 mhz 3g. TElstra desire does not have 1900 mhz 3g, but ATT will have the entire network on 850 mhz 3g by end of the year.
What state are you in?

Correct, the Telstra (Australia) Desire is UMTS 850/2100. But the upcoming Telus (Canada) Desire is UMTS 850/1900.
Thanks for the info, I'm glad to hear that. I'm probably going to wait for the Telus model so I get full 850/1900 and I think I like the idea of the SLCD better than the AMOLED for outdoor use. And the off-contract price for the Telus Desire is rumored to be only $450, hopefully that's true Now they just need to launch the darn thing!

How did AT&T get the Nexus ONE IMEIs if they don't carry it. Is HTC handling them over?...
I assume the N1 is a special case... and it was released in the US.
The regular Desire won't work on 3g in the US uses different frequencies for 3g, so you have to wait for the North American version to come out. That's why people are saying that no one has one on AT&T

T mobile USA and desire gsm....would pick 3g?

the phone was connected on att usa and didnt pick 3g.. owners dont know if it would pick t mobile usa 3g.. usually when it doesnt get the att 3g it would on t mobile but im not sure... any help would be greatly appreciated
I think different networks use different frequencies in the US. It could also be down to your network and the roaming arrangements it has with US networks as they may only have a 3g agreement for some, not all networks.

No, the Desire won't pick up 3G on any US network. This is because AT&T and T-Mobile use different radio bands for their 3G networks, that the hardware in the Desire cannot utilize.

[Q] GSM Desire usable in the US?

Hello everyone,
i will be living in California from March to July and therefore i'd like to know if i can use my GSM Desire from Germany in the US?
I understand that in europe GSM is used and in the US mostly CDMA. I know there are GSM networks as well in the US.
I've read somewhere that i won't be able to use HSDPA in the US, but only EDGE. Is that true? It would be really annoying if it were.
And if so, is there a way to turn my GSM Desire into a CDMA Desire? Somehow flashing another RADIO oder whatever?
Thanks for all the answers!
Regards,
Muuhmann

i think t-mobile support the same frequency for there 3g/hsdpa as eu desires
Really? That would be awesome!
Can anyone using t-mobile usa confirm this?
Sorry to chime in a little late.
I moved from Belgium to the US bringing with me a European T-Mobile Germany Desire. It works fine on the T-Mobile USA network, the only problem is that I can't get 3G or 4G to work. The only way so far to get internet access on my phone is through wifi.
I read somewhere that 2G is supposed to be supported but I came here on these forums to find out how and why, because I can't make it work..
Hope this is somehow helpful..
Hi chbau,
thanks for letting me know.
3G and 4G (that would be the "H"-symbol, right?) aren't working, if I understand you correctly?
But in the next sentence you also say that you don't get 2G (that would be the "E"-symbol) to work, am i correct?
That would be a real pain in the a**. That would mean no mobile internet.
