Hi,
I'm off into work on Monday and intend to show the guys my new Desire. I wanted to show them how good the video is by playing an HD video...
When I convert my film I end up popping out as an MP4. Is this the best I can do or are there other recommendations?
All the best,
Sam.

There's a two-part video review that tried several bitrates and came up with an ideal for multiple formats based on CorePlayer's benchmarks. Check the video review thread.
As for 720, that's a 1280x720 resolution, so if you're converting specifically for the TP2, it's a waste and will yield lower quality video than a lower resolution because the device is having to scale it down. Shoot for 800x480 if you want the video to be ideal for the device.
Best converter is going to be a matter of personal taste. Many of the free compression programs out there are just frontends for programs like ffmpeg and mencoder, so the quality ends up being the same. It's just a question of what interface you prefer.

ive used the convertor terryd1980 linked to. and its great, slow on my pc (though that'll be my pc's fault) but after a small problem in using large 4gb+ files it seems fine now.
i did a bit of a test with a tv episode. a 1gb 720p file converted with the above and played through album (with a bitrate of 750), compared to coreplayer playing an unconverted 200mb dvd rip. although the dvd rips still looked excellent and played perfectly the originally hd file looked a touch better. i didnt notice any playback issues and there didnt appear to be any skipped frames. i dont know if there's anyway to display how many frames were dropped using album, but coreplayer shows 0 dropped frames after its finished playing.
I dont think it is your computer Jamie, mine runs fairly slowly too and I've spent a lot of cash making my PC pretty beefy.
As it seems to do a great job converting I'm not too fussed but I will leave it going in the background or before I leave for work so that it doesnt bother me.

greate .. thx
I have just watched the below video and I have mixed feelings about whether the Desire is capable of hd video recording, and will have divx support on release.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2RA0T67Wws
The employee seems to shoot down the rumours as he says that he heard them on the net.
Why would htc keep these features a secret? but at the same time on the t-mobile site under coming soon phones HD video recording is noted as a feature?
Well, actually he's literally saying "at the moment", and that is VERY much on the first week of the announcement, coming from a HTC employee. it means they're working on it.
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010...ceive-divx-playback-support-in-future-update/
"HTC Desire to receive DivX playback support in future update"
It appears that one has to trust HTC and buy Desire over Nexus one, hoping for 720p and DivX. I believe DivX is possible, but 720p would be unlikely to happen over update.
I believe I saw another video, where an 'HTC Exhibitor' said that the device as it is records in VGA but the hardware is already in there to support HD video recording- even going as far as saying, "if some developed an app to do this they (HTC) would have no problem with it".
i've preordered a desire and on the specs-page they say it supports DivX!

I can confirm that the desire plays DIVX. I have had a demo handset from HTC for a week, playback is very good, great phone.

Please let us know - does it play 720p mp4 MPEG and 720p AVI DivX without conversion? Any limit to bitrate?
This is my first andoid phone, but i am by no means a noob..I just wanted to know what you guys thought was the best video player app for android..i find the default one very lackluster
I would say RockPlayer. It plays most formats in pretty darn good quality.
I also suggest RockPlayer. It plays my DivX/XviD and mkv files great.
(Posted from my HTC EVO using Tapatalk for Android.)
I havnt used rockplayer but if I didnt already buy yxplayer id probably try it out first. Either way yxplayer is awesome and you can check it out before buying it.
Def,ly Rock player, this is one of the best I've seen. Like jcjr81 said, this bad boy plays almost everything you throw @ it, a must have app for your video files...
Sorry for the noob question but I'm coming to the evo late on the game...
I read in a thread about longer life batteriesthat I should really watch avatar in 720p...so I went looking for it and it's 8gb! Can the phone really play a video at 1280x720p when the screen resolution is much lower than that?
Is there a lower file size that will allow me to enjoy the best this screen can do?
Thanks!
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
Give it a shot, let us know.
Really, it's a bit silly to watch a 720p video file on a 4 inch screen. Videos with lower resolutions look just fine, and are far smaller file sizes (720*480, about 700-800 megs for a movie of average length).
I downloaded a 1080p trailer for avatar in h.264 mp4 and the phone couldn't process it...it was lagging horribly and I'm running at 1150mhz...
And a 720p trailer in quick time .mov...also lagged a little.
I guess I'm going to stick to my standard def files...

Looking to buy the Iconia Tab A100 for my son. I have an Asus transformer and i love it, but wanted to get him something smaller. This tab seems to be a nice one. I wanted to make sure of the following things.
1) Movies work (avi)
2) Netflix works (without root)
3) any good "kid type" case reccomendations?
Thanks for help
Hello friend! I will do my best to provide relevant answers to your questions!
1) Most movies do work! Even in resolutions of 720p and 1080p. Of course, not all video files are encoded correctly. There can be wide degrees of variation in quality between video files; trying to play a 1080p avi movie file with an extremely high bitrate (much like how MP3s are in 128 kilobytes per second(kbps), 192kbps, 256kbps, 320kbps etc) will cause stuttering and jittery playback. But the Tegra 2 platform can play 1080p content. Perhaps an SD card with high read speeds could remedy this (or using SD-Booster to bolster the read-ahead value of the SD card) but I am not certain, as I have not extensively tested this.
2) Netflix works, albeit a bit jittery in operation (i.e. browsing instant play selections) but video works great. Being rooted does not affect its operation.
3) I have not looked into kid-friendly accessories, but browsing Amazon's selection of A100 accessories may yield a nice prize.
And by the way, I am selling my own Iconia A100 tablet.
Cheers!
What about skype video, will this work?
Why are you selling? How Much?

Sorry mate, the tab has been sold already. I sold it because I found myself using it less and less after getting my shiny new Sensation.
Haven't tested sky video calling on it, so I cannot comment.
Cheers!
anyone else know if skype works on A100?
