I`m a Kaiser Owner, and looking at the Rhodium as a possible upgrade, but like many others here I`m sure, I`m concerned about iffy video performance. HTC really seem to have dropped the ball on this one, my experiences of the Kaisers video have made me wary.
Anyone heard any feedback on this topic? Anyone with a pre-production model give us a heads up?
For example, could the Rhodium play a 640*480 WMV video without dropping frames?
Same processor as the old TP must mean same video issues, right?
I had Kaiser, and with the right encoding & software video was absolutely fine! I don't know what all the complaints were about.
The Xperia can handle full resolution video pretty well if encoded correctly, and I'm sure this will be the case with the TP2 as well, as the hardware should be powerful enough to do it.
I can't comment on the Touch Pro, as I haven't used one. The TP2 has quite a high-res screen, but I'm sure it'll be fairly easy to get a decent video experience from it.

I think they made the drivers for the touch pro better didnt they? the 3d ones? so if they did yeah it will be VERY good if they do that for this to which I bet they will if they did for the old one
Won't be burned again!

To my knowledge nothing has been improved with the drivers for the touch pro. I have a Sprint TP and video sucks on it. Some ppl have messed around with 3d drivers with various levels of success, but nothing official has been done. There's a whole sticky thread at PPCGeeks on TP video playback tips:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=57282
So far I haven't really got anything to work for me reliably. What ppl fail to realize is that having a bigger/better screen is only going to make things worse if the hardware/drivers aren't improved. 320x200 video played fine on my Touch and probably would be fine on my TP, but going to 640x400 is 4x the resolution.
Unless HTC improves the 3d/video drivers, the TP2 is going to be as bad or worse than the TP because it is the same stinking hardware. I was so disappointed that the TP2 is just a rehashed TP which really has no better hardware than the Touch--just better screens w/o the greater horsepower to drive them.
I hope I am wrong about this and the TP2 video and graphics are awesome, but I certainly will not upgrade to it until I am certain the situation is improved.

Thanks for pointing that out. I am going to try them and they will probably help some, but I had already heard about it and for the most part they only address part of the problem.
If, and it's a BIG IF, HTC fully optimized ALL the drivers for the TP2, then it could be quite a bit better than the TP. Given HTC's crappy history I would have to have it thoroughly proven to me before I would believe it. However I am hoping against experience that it will be the case.
Maybe this is one of the big reasons why they stuck with much of the same hardware. So they could optimize everything. Hopefully.

Hello, I would have to say that the video quality is 100% better than the TP. I have been watching full videos with NO quality loss in sound or video. I was using the Sprint Touch Pro and was not very happy, but the TP2 is perfect. I can even get 2 full movies out of one charge!!! I have been watching a lot of DivX movies the same ones I watch on my PC, with no issues (well, except each one takes up about 700MB.)
The set up I have been using is, CorePlaer and the D3D Driver. DivX player works well also, but the text gets very small due to the resolution. Hope this helps!
Core player
Video quality is great with core player. Watched 2 movies on my TP2 today and it was very good with great frame rate. And I could use higher res mp4 movies if i wanted to and still keep 100% playback so i havent even pushed it yet. Totally recommended.
I can play a 800x480 AVC encoded movie with aac+ audio at ~1.2Mbit without any hiccups through HTC's video player. Coreplayer on the otherhand can't come anywhere near handling this. Looks damn good too! I used MEGUI with AVC Zune settings to make the video from a bluray movie. It's about 1GB in size.
curious
Just curious why the video player thats built in will play only some of my mp4 files? Thats one of the reasons why I went with coreplayer was because most of my mp4 movies would play a green screen with audio on the built in player and wmp.
Anyone know if TP2 has the same qtv video hardware acceleration?
I'm surprised nobody has posted anything about qtv.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=57282
I have a TP and mp4 video plays flawlessly through HTC album because it has the proper qtv drivers. My problem has been with playing divx in coreplayer with the reverse engineered qtv driver. I was hoping that HTC would drop qtv in the TP2 so that I could play divx in a player with proper video drivers. Does anyone know if HTC still uses qtv in the TP2?

MP4 is a file format that supports a few different video codec. Mostly like the green screen means the video codec isn't supported by the player. I would highly recommend these days to encode the video with H.264 as the video codec. This codec is the standard supported by all major companies these days, Apple, Adobe, MS, etc. Some video cameras like the Sanyo Xacti also captures video natively as MP4 (H.264) so there is no need to encode the video.
And TP2 plays MP4 (H.264) video well both in HTC Album and WMP.
anyone done any yet, if so whats the best converter and format to use and best res
think i heard on a review anything above 720 and it drops frames
anyone confirm this

There's a two-part video review that tried several bitrates and came up with an ideal for multiple formats based on CorePlayer's benchmarks. Check the video review thread.
As for 720, that's a 1280x720 resolution, so if you're converting specifically for the TP2, it's a waste and will yield lower quality video than a lower resolution because the device is having to scale it down. Shoot for 800x480 if you want the video to be ideal for the device.
Best converter is going to be a matter of personal taste. Many of the free compression programs out there are just frontends for programs like ffmpeg and mencoder, so the quality ends up being the same. It's just a question of what interface you prefer.

ive used the convertor terryd1980 linked to. and its great, slow on my pc (though that'll be my pc's fault) but after a small problem in using large 4gb+ files it seems fine now.
i did a bit of a test with a tv episode. a 1gb 720p file converted with the above and played through album (with a bitrate of 750), compared to coreplayer playing an unconverted 200mb dvd rip. although the dvd rips still looked excellent and played perfectly the originally hd file looked a touch better. i didnt notice any playback issues and there didnt appear to be any skipped frames. i dont know if there's anyway to display how many frames were dropped using album, but coreplayer shows 0 dropped frames after its finished playing.
I dont think it is your computer Jamie, mine runs fairly slowly too and I've spent a lot of cash making my PC pretty beefy.
As it seems to do a great job converting I'm not too fussed but I will leave it going in the background or before I leave for work so that it doesnt bother me.

The UI looks very ugly but the amount of formats it can play is phenomenal. Looks promising.
this will have to do till core player 2.0 is out.
Wonder freakin ful!
Does this work on nexus ? Ill try it anyways..
Please accept my whole hearted appreciation for the info.
I am planning on getting a Sprint Galaxy Nexus (have too many unused upgrade lines lol). And I was wondering how it performs on 720p 10bit video. From what I read it is able to play on MX Player, BS Player, Dice Player but I am more worried about performance. Some devices I hear have issues playing 10bit high action scenes so I want to know how it does. And if anyone has any experience with this?
I don't know but the nexus decodes 1080p video at the hardware level due to its chipset, not software like many phones. So it handles video playback like a champ.

I don't think any phone can do hardware decoding of 10bit video. 8bit video even a 1ghz single core hummingbird can play back 1080p with hardware decoding. But I am more particularly interested in 10bit which is more then likely decoded via software.

try vlc beta or mx player. H/W decoding might not work with these files but software playback could be fine in theory.
MX Player can decode 720p 10-bit (Hi10P) files using its software decoder but it's very slow. You'd better off reencoding them using Handbrake.
PS: Even without action scenes, 10-bit files lag on the GNex.

Well I am able to play back 10bit 720p on my Droid Charge so as far as playback it should be able to do it, the problem is performance. the droid charge isn't powerful enough unfortunately.

Well if I am going to transcode then it kind of eliminates some of the purpose. Have you tried in MX Player to set it to use both cores? fast mode? 16 bit color depth? overclocking the phone? None of the above would help?
10-bit H.264 is pointless. The screen (most likely 6-bits per channel with dithering) can't even display that many colors.

There are other benefits to 10-bit. The compression gives higher quality and smaller file sizes. Also the screens last I checked are not crappy TN panels. Super AMOLED is more then capable of displaying all colors. Even the IPS screens on phone these days are Super IPS (not to be confused with eIPS) and should be capable of displaying 10bit color.
That the format of the video is what it is and transcoding is not an option. Hence why I am interested in performance.
Don't expect anything but horrible performance. 10-bit H.264 streams can't be hardware decoded by anything on the market and probably never will.
Most S-IPS panels are also 6-bit per channel with dithering. Very few are actually 8-bit. Now, as far as monitors go, unless you're willing to spend 10 times the price for a non-consumer model, you will not find anything that supports 10-bits per channel natively. The story holds true for phones, too. I don't believe there are any 10-bit screens and I'm sure there won't be any for years to come (again, unless you're spending thousands for a phone).

First of all Super AMOLED has full color support because its not an LCD. The only thing you need to do is calibrate the screen so its not saturated. If you take OLED decay asside OLED can give you perfect color reproduction batter then the best IPS screens. Of course overall 10bit ends up being converted to 8bit because the hardware needs to support it like ATI Firepro
Now for SIPS, name me one monitor that is 6bit. The low end monitors that are 6bit are eIPS which use FRC. S-IPS is at minimum 8bit.
But we are getting off topic here..all I want to do is playback 10bit content. I am well aware of the limitations and that the decoding will be software which goes back to my question. Is the nexus powerful enough for the job.
Just tried one of the sample vids with MX and VLC. VLC was stuck on the first frame and MX played it but what seemed like 1FPS. I overclocked my phone to 1812MHz and have FrancoKernel with 512MHz GPU. Set my governor to performance and still no go. Tweaked settings on MX and still no go.
Sorry OP but I'm pretty sure the GNex can't play it.

With those Specs sounds like you're trying to cook your phone lol. Higher isn't always better. Example, I installed Batman to my Transformer which was overclocked to 1400mhz and it lagged like crazy. Once I put it down to 1100 it ran a lot better. Maybe you might have to find the sweet spot for your phone.
One of the main reasons I plan on purchasing this is because of the the so called video playback. I plan on mainly watching movies and anime on this tablet and I was wondering how is the playback for 10 bit/10p mkv files?
I'm also curious to see whether it's safe to watch high resolution mkv files without overheating the tablet since I'll be watching it a lot during the night.
Thanks in advanced.
Yes to everything. All new tablets are capable of playing this format with no issue. You just need an app like BS Player. I play and stream 8gb mkv files all the time

+1 to mx player. I haven't found a video file it cannot play. Install the DTS plugin here off of XDA to play files with that sound format. I use it in conjunction with ES file explorer to stream video's over my network and even through wireless 1080p mkv's play flawlessly.

I haven't noticed any issue with getting warm playing videos but it sure gets warm when recording 1080p or doing multiple 360° photos.
I'm running a kernel with better thermal throttling. And its not gotten warm like it used to just takes a bit longer if it needs to just to keep cool.

No, the only time I've noticed a little warm is when playing high graphics games and when it's charging while using it, the common stuff that usually get it warm. no problems with over heat here on mine.
i have never watched movies for 5+ hours straight on my tablet. i watch a two hour movie or one hour show, and never had heat problems.
Thanks for all your responses everyone. I'm probably going to buy this today.
