Root and keep stock ROM? - Desire General

Hi all!
I'm pleased to see that root access to the Desire now is obtained, kudos to the developers! I'm tempted to root my device, but I do have some questions:
1) Can I keep the stock ROM after rooting the device?
2) Will I get SuperUser rights with the stock ROM after rooting?
3) Will I be able to by applications from the Market in an originally unsupported region (Scandinavia)?
4) Will I be able to use Apps2SD with the stock ROM after rooting?
5) If I decide to flash a cooked ROM, will I then:
a) Be able to backup my massages and restore them to the new ROM after flashing?
b) Revert back to the original stock ROM? (I guess this is not supported atm)
c) Choose a Norwegian keyboard with Norwegian XT9?
BTW. I have an unbranded and unlocked device bought in Norway.
Hopefully someone can help an Android noob that have converted from the WinMo scene, by answering my question.

I'm going to answer from the perspective that you have no idea to accomplish this yourself.
1) Can I keep the stock ROM after rooting the device?
- No. See (2)
2) Will I get SuperUser rights with the stock ROM after rooting?
- Not unless you install it yourself, and push the su binary to the write-protected /system directory
4) Will I be able to use Apps2SD with the stock ROM after rooting?
- No
5) If I decide to flash a cooked ROM, will I then:
a) Be able to backup my massages and restore them to the new ROM after flashing?
You can find this out yourself. Look for backup applications on the market and see if they offer what you want.
b) Revert back to the original stock ROM? (I guess this is not supported atm)
I've heard you can in order so you can use your warranty; it might be stock or something where HTC can't tell what you've done

Basically it means that gain access to advanced features which usually do not have to access mainly to prevent you to break something.
1. They're basically the same thing but as its name states, with pre-rooted roms you do not have to do the rooting procedure.
2. Check 1. Custom roms are modified versions of the original rom. Rooting is the first step towards enabling you to install customized roms. This thread will help you with the installation of a custom ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
3. No, but be careful to install the appropriate RUU. Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667

1. Same thing!
2. Correct - already rooted for you. However RUU is a term relating to a stock rom, rather than a custom rom. So you just flash the custom rom, not an ruin.
3. For this you flash the ruu! You are then completely back to carrier specific, non rooted stock rom.

Rooting Question

Hello guys,
First of all, I'm not new to rooting or custom ROMS, having said that my question is, what is the best method to root an EVO?
Browsing thru the forums, I found the following methods:
[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.5 (4/25/11)
To my understanding, this method will flash a custom rom "Sprint Lovers ROM"
and
[Program] SimpleRoot .1 ---- 3 Click Root w/ nand unlock!!
This method recommends flashing a custom rom
Now, I do not want to flash a custom rom since I'm doing this for a friend and I do not want him to be dealing with custom roms, nandroid backups, etc. Is there another method to root an evo? Without having to flash a custom rom.
Thank you
Easiest, fastest, coolest way to root without a custom rom. Might have some issues with permissions if you don't flash a custom rom unless you're just trying to do basic junk like tether. I'd actually recommend flashing a stock rooted custom rom instead of just gaining root on the eng stock rom. Make sure you hit up the market and download busybox if you don't flash a custom rom and update superuser.
Run unrevoked 3 (1st one)
http://unrevoked.com/
Stock rooted rom, or you could just run sprint lovers. It just has few added tweaks but mostly stock.

Most of the Hot Spot App usage will be from a custom rom in order for it to be unlocked. Wireless Tether will usually work as well and all you need is root. There are plenty of stock ruu's out there as well, but is a little more time consuming to run.
If you look down a little on xHaux's post in your first link...you can do a quick version that does not flash Sprint Lovers:
Instructions for Quick method:
This will completely wipe your phone. If you would like to back up your apps you can use Titanium backup to save them. It also has an option to save the system files but this can result in a buggy ROM afterward.
Extract AutoRoot.zip into a folder that is easy to find.
Open a DOS prompt by running the OpenShell file.
Type 'autoroot quick' and press Enter
It will then flash the engineering bootloader and the recovery through fastboot. Once it is finished you can use the bootloader menu to boot into the recovery and make a NANDroid, flash a ROM, radios, etc.
No matter the reason...a nandroid is always a good idea if only to do it once your happy with your decision on what to run.....something WILL happen when he/she finds out what options are out there. A quick restore will get you back to day one.
Also look even a bit farther down in the thread..there are options based on what hboot you have. xHausx's method was such a breeze...just sit back and watch the scripts do the work for you!
Good Luck
Unrevoked. One click and done.

[Q] Clarity Required on Debranding

OK guys, I just want some clear answers on this. I've done a bit of forum searching but not entirely sure.
As I understand it, I can:
1: Unlock a branded vodafone UK phone with HTCdev.com
2: In doing this, it will 'delete' the CID.
3: Download the most recent stock unbranded OTA file from the forums.
4: Run the OTA instructions through computer installation.
Note: This should work as the CID is deleted?
5: Once this is done, I have suddenly have a stock official rom?
6: What would now happen when the next official OTA is due?
7: What rom would boot if I then did a full factory reset?
8: Because I did all of this with S ON, I can't go back to voda crapware so my warranty is basically void?
If any of you could give me clarity on the questions and above points, that would be awesome.
You can't bebranded without Super CID - having no CID means no update will run
OTA updates have the pre-requisite version in the name, e.g.
OTA_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.9-1.26.401.2_release_256505w0tk6eiq8g74y4vb.zip
This means you HAVE to be on 1.26.401.2 to update to 1.28.401.9
To debrand you need to flash an unbranded RUU, which you cannot do at this time. All you can do is flash a 'stock' custom ROM
In that case, are there any stock 'custom' roms out there that can:
1: be reverted back to bloatware stock rom for warranty purposes
2: if and when official stock OTA are available, they can be downloaded and installed on top of the stock custom rom?

The closest custom ROM to stock is the Android Revolution HD ROMs. If you do a nandroid backup as soon as you flash the custom recovery you can easily go back to stock by restoring your backup and flashing the stock recovery and then re-locking the phone.
How do I do a nandroid backup? I take it the backup is stored on my computer or something?
When you say custom recovery, do you mean the custom rom?
And lastly, when official OTA updates are released and the maker of arhd is kind enough to implement the changes into their rom, can this be installed as an update or does it require wiping the phone and installing a new arhd rom all over again?
Ps guys, thanks for all the help so far. I'm slowly starting to understand...

A nandroid backup is the backup you make when you root your phone and flash a custom recovery on it.
A custom recovery is not a custom ROM. A custom recovery is like a ms dos program for your phone. It is used to flash a custom ROM or backup your ROM (nandroid backup)
The latest ARHD ROM is based on the latest 1.28.401 base so all the updates and tweaks on the 1.28.401 is already there but optimized more.

Nandroid backup: A backup taken from ClockworkMod recovery using the UI on the phone. The backup is saved on the sdcard. It's good practice to keep a backup of it on the computer as well.
Custom recovery: The recovery is not the same as the "ROM". The recovery is a small partition on the device that you can boot into. From the recovery you can make changes to the main system, "ROM".
Updates: When updates are issued you should never use the OTA update. It may cause alot of problems. ROM builders/chefs are usually very quick to fetch an OTA update and implement it in their ROM so one usually ends up with the update quicker then if one would have waited for the OTA. When installing a smaller update, a wipe is often not required. It is always recommended to take new nandroid backups before installing updates though in case something goes wrong.
Stock ROM is here

[Q] What are my options, update + keep root etc.

I currently have a stock 4.1 rom, the one that came on the device. It's a german rom, even though I live in the Netherlands. That doesn't botter me, btw I use US english as a system language.
I rooted that with auto root. So I have NO recovery and NO triangle. However I do have system status modified and thus cannot OTA update.
No what I want to achieve is:
-Newest STOCK rom, with ink blob etc
-Maybe different language rom, does that matter for ANYTHING?
-Enable OTA
-Keep root
-No triangle
-Ability to flash zips, most importantly NFC at lock screen, and allow more apps for split view.
-Keep EVERYTHING what is currently on, so no factory reset if possible.
Is all this possible, and how? I cannot for the life of me find any info how to do it.
Thanks VERY much if anyone knows and can explain.
N7100 btw
No, update is not possible via OTA or Kies when you're rooted.

Okay, let's say forget about OTA, is the other combination still possible?
You can use Mobile Odin to flash a stock ROM with keeping root. And flashing a stock official ROM will not wipe any data.
To flash zip's you need to have a custom/advanced Recovery.

Edit: okay I used Xposed for the NFC at lock screen so flashable zips is not really needed anymore. Now my final question stands:
If I flash, for instance this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915386
1: My triangle will stay away, correct?
2: However, I will need to choose French, which is not a problem, but does this not change anything else besides the default system language? I thought it had something to do with handwriting as well (which I currently don't have)?
3: If I choose either ODEX or DEODEXED, both will keep all my data?

I can't answer your question with regard to language options. However, flashing that ROM via ODIN, either odexed or deodexed, should not wipe your data or increase your flash counter.
However, and another member has already mentioned this, I strongly suggest you familarize yourself with MobileODIN. Currently, there is no way to receive OTA updates with "Modified" system status; and if you're rooted, you'll always have "Modified" system status.
However, just because your device can't receive OTA updates, that doesn't mean your device can't flash OTA updates that you've downloaded manually via an update.zip. Furthermore, flashing an OTA update.zip via MobileODIN Pro will allow you to retain root through the process. Additionally, MobileODIN also has the ability to flash full, PC ODIN-Flashable ROMs just like the odexed/deodexed ones you're currently looking at. Unlike with PC ODIN though, MobileODIN Pro gives you the option to inject root into whatever ROM you happen to be flashing at the time. So, if you wanted, you could go download the absolute latest completely stock, untouched, unrooted OTA or full ROM, use MobileODIN to flash it and root it at the same time, and remain completely stock except for having root access.
Now, I don't know if staying as stock as possible is even important to you. However, if it is, then MobileODIN Pro is your one-stop-shop for flashing stock, PC ODIN-Flashable ROMs whenever you need to. And even if staying completely stock isn't important to you, MobileODIN is still the best way to update to the latest ROM before cooks even have a chance to include it in their custom ROMs.

[Q] Simple way of rooting a stock rom

I'm running the new model SGH-I257M and, thanks to @spyke555, we managed to get a backup copy of the rom before Samsung has publicly released it. Now the question is; Is there a way that we can take SU and Busybox, and place it in the backup folder to have the stock rom have root access when we flash it?
