HTC Desire Constant Hissing bad Call Quality. - Desire General

HTC Desire arrived today first impressions were this is one cool piece of kit. HTC did well with the looks of the phone and screen is fantastic.
Setup the device and then made a call and I have to say I was not impressed at all. There is a constant hissing sound throughout the call. Seems like the other person was at a sea side, The only other way I can describe it, if you was to hold a shell to your ear that distinctive sound. I have since made a few more calls and it is continuing even tried a hard reset. Tried 2 operators T-Mobile & Vodafone as the phone was bought sim free it is a phone fault. I never had this with any of my old HTC devices HD2 or TP2.
How is everyone here.
I have done some searching around the internet and can see a few posts relating to the same issue.

I have had a similar problem that lasted a day. I first thought it to be the speaker you put your ear to for calls, but when changing to the back speaker in loadspeaker, it was still there. This was clearly linked to the call and not the 2x hardware speakers. I put it down to a local network problem. Hope that was all. Many networks share towers in some areas. Could possibly still be network?

That's what I thought at first it could be an operator problem, but I have tested 3 network providers in london and surrey. 02,Vodafone & Tmobile and they all have the same problem.
100% handset problem going to return it.

Hi. I'm having this problem now as well. Device has been fine for almost 5 months but has now I'm getting a constant hissing during calls.
I've discovered that it doesn't happen via a Bluetooth headset so most likely something on the speaker.
What do you reckon the chances are of getting this fixed/replaced under the warranty? Quite annoying to spend so much on a bit of kit and have it flake after 5 months.
Cheers.

Major problems with dropping calls!

First off, let me say that having been a WinMob guy for the past 4 years, this phone has been a revelation in good design. I love it.
The ONLY thing that is impacting my experience with this handset is its CONSTANT habit of dropping calls! This usually happens completely at random, sometimes 1 minute into a call, sometimes 10 minutes into one - happens with both poor service and full bar service.
Could it have anything to do with HSDPA being active during voice calls?? Haven't had this issue with any other phones before and I certainly don't want to have to return it for a fix.
Any help with this would be very greatly appreciated!!
I've experience it a few times, put it down to poor T-Mobile coverage so far.
Happens every call with me, really can't figure out what I can do to fix it. Just hope it's not a hardware fault.
Has any one had any similar experiences with their handsets? Or alternatively, any ideas on how to fix the issue?
Thanks, just want to know so I can decide whether to take it back or not...
Guys, any help with this?
Well, I've never had this problem until today when I dropped a call twice. Had full bars. Hmmm. (T-mobile in case it's a network prob btw)
Have you had a look on the T-Mo Android forum ?
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/discussions/index?page=forums&forum=80103656d92cf90123e15db75a006088
I've not looked there for sometime now.
I've been using it in Switzerland for a week, and have had no dropped calls whatsoever, so i'm assuming it's something to do with T Mobile UK
(Just for the benefit of any one else who will read this, I'm on O2.)
Hey guys, might have found a fix for this -
1. Turn phone off
2. Remove SIM + battery
3. Put battery back in without SIM, turn handset on and leave for 3 or so mins.
4. Turn off, + put SIM back in w/ battery as well
5. Change Network data setting to receive WCDMA only
Seems to have worked, but haven't tested extensively.
Btw, thanks for the t-mobile forums link, did help.
ive also had the same issue. had the same problem on my hero on 3 before I got my desire which is now on Orange and still the dame problem. also g1 on 3 had same problem. must be a problem on Android or with data and voice at same time.

I thinks it's more the phone since I'm AT&T with a Telus Desire.
This happens to me too with 2-4 bars. I thought it was my cheek hitting the End Call but it happens with BT too.
Maybe I've just been spoiled with Nokia and Motorola's reception...
It happened in Taiwan before. It's sim card's fault. We replaced our cards with new ones and problems are solved.

Frequent call drops/network drops - frustrated cry for help!

I have an original Desire bought in Norway, and imported (and hence VAT free!) to the UK, using my T Mobile SIM that has worked perfectly well in my G2/Hero.
Every few minutes or so, irrespective of how many connection bars, the network will suddenly drop off, and I get the "Cross of doom" on the reception icon.
If I am in the message app (standard HTC messages), and this happens, it will kick me off any message I was composing at the time, and I have to start again when the connection is back. It will also have no messages in the inbox until the network is back some seconds later and everything loads. It's almost like a blackout all of a sudden.
It will drop calls for the same reason, and 10 seconds or so I am back on connection.
I sent it back to HTC using the Global Warranty Scheme, who have changed the Main Board, FOC, and collected/delivered by courier. Very efficient service BTW. I was so disappointed to find it still having the same problem.
I have also exchanged my SIM with T Mobile for a new one (Same number). I have ordered a Vodfone PAYG SIM just to experiemt the likelyhood it may be the network provider. However, it looks more like the radio suffers a sudden loss of power, and conks out.
The APN settings have been set to WCDMA only (changed from AUTO/WCDMA) as it seemed to sort it out, but I got excited too soon.
At my wits end, as the phone is miles ahead of my G2 in so many ways, and I love it, but I don't know whether it's a T Mobile issue or if I should send it back to HTC again. As it's not provided by T Mobile, and I have another 7 months left of my contract, I am stuck if it's network related.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
OK...have now popped the PAYG Vodafone SIm into the phone, and it barely has reception and drops out too.
...so have phoned HTC again, and UPS will once again be collecting it on Monday. I asked what happens if a fault is still not found, and after the third return I can apply to have the phone replaced by HTC. It's not ideal, but beats having to pay for a flight to exchange it abroad.
Still, if anyone have any suggestions, please let me know!

Just an FYI, but I too am on T-Mobile, and recently replace my G2 with a Desire.
I find the network reception on the Desire is much better than on my G2, and I've no problems with dropped connections.
I know this doesn't help you, but it does point to the problem being your particular device.

Dave

Thanks Dave, this does strengthen the case thinking it's the device. HTC were pretty swift in returning the device last time, so if it means a week X 2 being without it, I can live with that as I can then ask for it to be replaced on warranty direct from HTC.
I have the same issue with a Stock Desire from Vodafone..
Signal drops but more often it fluctuates like hell ... calls are dropped...
or other people can't hear me properly ...
Maybe it is an issue that will be resolved with a "Radio" update from HTC ?
Does someone know maybe this happened in the past with other HTC handsets and got sorted out later..
It is really buggy...
my girlfriend is having the same issues with her Desire
we applied the official update that was released a week or 2 ago (with a new radio) but that didn't solve the issue
sometimes she also hears a weird sound before the call goes dead..
did anybody have any luck in getting this solved?
will a custom rom fix the issues?
thanks!
coming from a htc hd2 (switched for this particular reason) i can report that this has happened on many htc phones, it is NOT a device problem, it has been mostly linked to your location and interference (buildings etc) as the frequencies used by the latest htc antennas use a frequency which does not penetrate as well.
you can read the 50 or so pages of it for the hd2, SOME progress has been made but never fixed, the only hope is HTC releasing a fix.

thanks for your fast reply!
I checked the thread you mentioned but it seems to be all about internet issues
my girlfriend never uses mobile internet so the issues she has are call related
these don't happen every day but every few days
about once every 3 weeks she gets a total signal drop which can only be solved by rebooting (this seems to be something mentioned in the thread)
then again most probably internet, call and signal issues are most likely to be caused by the radio so it could be the same problem..
is anybody experiencing the same weird loud static noise sound from time to time before a call gets auto-ended?
I just want to get all the facts straight because she is planning on sending it back to HTC for repair but if it's a new radio flash she needs there is no point in sending it back
sorry for the long post
Why don't you try setting it on AUTO, or GSM only, even better?
Sound like sudden loss of WCDMA connection.
tried that this week but the issue still remains..
is this something that can be fixed by flashing a custom rom?
or do we need to wait for HTC to provide another radio?
Maybe....
Maybe this is not your case but I want to share with you.
I had the same problem with Hero and then with the Desire. It was very frustrating. Then I got it: all the programs like auto-killer. task-killer etc were acting killing (apparently random) my voice call. Incredible ! Now I have the same Disre, but I haven't installed any task killer or task manager. The device works good and I don't have dropped calls anymore
Again, maybe it's not your case. Maybe could be helpful for someone else...
Just try if you have some task killer installed. Uninstall it

[Q] Echoes during calls

I absolutely love my Nexus and aside from some interesting battery life, it is perfect. However, I've noticed on three occasions now the reception will become extremely echo-y to the point that I cannot understand what the other person is saying and have to call them back. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm on TMo USA so it might just be the network, but I thought I'd check and see if any here is noticing something like that. Thanks.
I have notice the same, but I’m from Poland, and use a Orange network, i ask on local polish nexus forum but it seems only i have this problem, so maybe it's hardware failure :|
If You have a some other info about this issue please let me notice.

I've noticed the people I call lately have echo problems. Tmobile and verizon. BlackBerry and iphones.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats by dre.
I'm in the vodafone germany network. I don't notice any echo problems. SO maybe it is carrier related.
Edit: I'm on CM9 Kang and Franco Kernel 9.2
Same problem. Issue has been reported here:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23482
Please star and comment to give this issue more exposure. It is almost a deal breaker as I am on business conference calls daily. Others have indicated a workaround of plugging in your headset after the call is placed, but I have tried this and the issue persists.
I am on Verizon.
ive had pathetic call quality on vodafone.. just replaced HTC desire with nexus... the desire was working perfectly on the same network in exact same locations
i also have high ratio of call drops on this phone
is this a phone?

Nokia Lumia 710 Problem

Hi,
I have a problem with my Lumia 710. From the first day I got it whenever I make a call or receive a call the other caller hears an echo of their voice for 10 seconds or so and after it clears up and its fine. It happens on every single call. Its not the Sim card because it was in the Focus before and worked fine. Can this be a network carrier problem or its the phone? I need to know because if it is the phone I only have a few days left to return it. The carrier I'm using it on is Fido in Canada.
I just need to know if it can be the phone as I'm having a hard time believing it is. Im just hesitant to return it since I put on a nice screen protector and unlocked the damn thing.
To know for sure, you need to try your sim card in a different device. I assume that you're on a micro sim now, so that means you either have to use an adapter, or the spacer that came in the original sim package, which you probably don't have anymore.
Need to try it in a different device to duplicate the problem and prove it's a network issue.
Is the same caller each time, or different people? I don't see how your device/service can contribute to them hearing their own voice echo. That seems more related to their carrier/device. I dunno. More testing necessary.
tried it
I already tried it in the Samsung Focus, although its the same carrier. It works perfectly there so its not the Sim Card. Whenever anyone calls or I make a call to them they hear an echo of their own voice when they talk to me for about 10-15 seconds after which it clears up and its fine. So its not the Sim, the only thing Im wondering is if its the Carrier or Phone. It just seems like a connection issue to me, but if its the phone I have to return it. Can anyone confirm if its the phone?
The Focus I tried the Sim card on is on the same network, so can it really by the carrier? I tried everything except hard resetting the phone. Played around with the volume, soft reset, took out the battery for 30 sec.....nothing is fixing it, it still does it on every single call.
Yea try getting the sim back into the focus to see if the problem persists, then if it doesn't then it's a phone problem and if it does then it's a network problem
well
it works fine in the Samsung Focus, its just doing this on the Lumia 710. I'll try hard resetting it to see if it clears up, maybe its a bug in the software. This sucks.
UPDATE
It happens only with the case on, when I take off the case the echo goes away! It is an Incipio NGP case for the Lumia 710. Anyone have any idea if it is the case or if its the phone itself thats the problem even though the echo goes away when the case is off???
whoa... thanks for the head up,mate. now we know what could possibly happen what improperly designed case could do to our lumia microphones ;-)
same problem here with a brand new lumia 710 + nokia original cc1032 silicone case. If I pull the case off the problem is solved!
What can we do?
I haven't seen the cases but it it possible to use a drill and make a spot for the mic?
Is the mic being covered up? Does the nokia have 2 mics like the titan to get rid of background noise? Maybe they covered up the 2nd mic.
im sorry to say
the problem is the phone. I had to get mine replaced and went through hell to do it don't even ask me what I had to get through. Anyways, there is a problem with your phone just like mine and it's a noise cancellation issue and its a hardware issue i can confirm this. Any case I put on would cause it and even without a case when you put the phone on speaker the other party hears a crazy amount of echo. This tells me quite simply that the mic on the back of the phone or at the bottom right is picking up the sound and transmits it back to the other side so thats why they hear their own voice. I suggest you return it to your carrier ASAP as its a defective unit. However, if you dont use a case on the phone and don;t use speakerphone, you wont even notice this echo issue.
Just to save you the trouble of troubleshooting, I tried multiple carriers, multiple cases and the echo was still there. I upgraded the software, downgraded back....soft reset and hard reset and nada it still did it.
same here, just wanna cry. 300 euros and I have those problems? it's incredible..
I am working as an IT Consulent for a company where we have just started using the Lumia 710 for most employees.
I have so far 2 out of maybe around 40 phones which have this problem.
With one of the employees i have tried switching his Lumia 710 to a new one, and he still got the echo problem.

S9 - Problems with Calls?

Hi.
I've got my S9 a week ago and I'm quite disappointed with the problems I'm having when I make or receive phone calls.
I would say that easily 60 or 70% of those calls I had problems in the middle of them because I couldn't ear the other party, although I could be heard.
Does anyone had similares issues?
Any solution to solve them?

I have reports from 2 users who have calls that drop for 3-4 seconds and the reconnect on a regular basis. Vodafone UK. Tried new SIM but that has not fixed it.
No issues with TMo in Fl.
Same problem. Dual sim version. When on a call the line goes silent for 4 or 5 seconds! Using a Three and Vodafone sim in the UK.
No problems so far using it with TMO in Puerto Rico.

i think there is a network stability issue with my phone. i have to reboot it 4-5 times a day and my old zte zmax pro gets a better signal then my s9 and that dont seem right. something is preventing it from sending and receiving a good signal even tho i have 4 bars.

Report it to samsung the more that report the issue the sooner it should get fixed
On a portuguese forum, several people reported the same problem I have.
During a call, the phone stops transmitting any sound for the other party for about 10 seconds...
People listen to me perfectly during that time, but I cannot ear anything. After those seconds, the phone call gets normal...
It's driving me mad!
Can confirm the above comment, a ton of portuguese people are complaining about this
s9+ call issue
my s9+ have call issue during the call too . (dual sim)
Samsung S9 problems during calls
Had my S9 64GB since 3rd march in the UK on EE and I have the same problem with periods of silence during calls, it is driving me mad as well. I have done the contact us on the phone where you upload a system log as soon as the fault occurs but so far I have had nothing back from Samsung regarding this issue. I also had a problem initially with the fingerprint sensor where it kept locking out but since I disabled the fingerprint gestures on the phone that seems to work fine now for lock screen.
I think the problem was reported also on Pocketnow Daily.
PS: I don't have this problem.

Same here with dual sim in Spain (tried with different sim from different companies).
Drop calls or simple silence
Got the Samsung galaxy s9 for the last 2 weeks intermittent problems with calls. When making calls for the first 20secs it just goes silent the other person can hear me but I cannot hear them. Sometimes this also happens mid call too, whereby after about 5 mins or so... It goes completely silent for 30secs and eventually either cuts me off or the call returns... Called Samsung UK not much help, obviously there is a fault somewhere , but for now Samsung are hiding.

It’s nothing todo with volte as my handset didn’t have it enabled
Had the same problem with my S9 dual sim. Tried just using a single sim but problem persists. I contacted Samsung who were less than helpful. Denied they have any reports of this issue even though I told them about online forums reporting same issue. I have sent my phone back to Samsung who will send me a new replacement once they receive my phone back for inspection. I'm now worried that even a new S9 will have the exact same issue.
I'd rather Samsung just say they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. It bugs me when they act like there's no issue. They wanted me to factory reset the phone to which I told them I'd only had the phone a week and spent a whole day setting.
Just gotta wait for the replacement phone now and hope they fix with a software update. They did offer a refund but I really want the phone (if I can make calls on it that is!)
The same issue with my 2 s9 plus phones. One sim version, Israel. Just hope that the problem is with soft and gonna be fixed with next update.
Today I went into a Samsung official suport centre and I was told exactly the same...they do not have any knowledge of problems regarding phone calls and S9.
They ran a series of tests concerning the phone's sensors and the test resulted that everything seemed OK.
But...it's not!
And I'm mad about this. Honestly I do not know if this is simply a software issue...
Ffs sake I've only used the phone for calls twice and both times the call just ended and I had to ring them back.
