I've just received my Desire, and have asked O2 for a new data plan (I used to be on Blackberry). That won't go through until midnight today, and they will charge me £3 mer MB with NO LIMIT until then! So, I need a way to turn data off (apart from WIFI) as soon as I turn the phone on (it's currently charging). I've read some reports of people turning it off, but certain apps turn it on again.
What's the simplest way to do this please, until tomorrow? Thanks!
Hold down the power button until the menu comes up then turn off mobile network.

Ok great, thanks. Yea now I've turned it on, it's pretty obvious.
Is there any chance of an app turning it on again without my knowledge? In some forums people say it can happen, but I THINK that may have been with WinMo.

I've heard of it in the past but not on 2.1, a rogue application maybe but they shouldn't do. It would be pretty easy to notice if you were out of wifi range though as the data icon would appear in the notification bar, your best bet would be to just check on it if you install any app that mentions data in it's software permissions.

Ok I'll do that. I'll also look for an app that'll show me data usage. I know there are some around.
Thanks for your help.
I'm in the same position as you (but my data plan doesn't go live till the 26th! lol), so I set up the phone to WiFi only thanks to the option on the setting screen, and so far it has only connected when I switched on the data toggle. I'll post here if I come across any apps that will connect though.

I've installed a program called NetCounter. It doesn't seem to count Wifi with the Desire (others have had the same problem), but for you and I that doesn't matter. I've got it set to alert me if 'somehow' the phone starts using data from O2. So it's just an extra safeguard. Sorry you have to put up with that until the 26!
I have the same question and I was told APNDroid does it too. Is it better to use APNDroid or the bult-in option?

Just add the widgets for network data, GPS, Wifi to the home screen (I've stuck mine under the clock) easy to turn on and off with single keys presses then rather than holding the power button down. I've also added the bluetooth shortcut but that takes a massive 2 key presses to turn on or off. I've found it useful for saving battery life as well.

He wanted the quickest way after turning it on, holding the power button is quicker than finding and adding those widgets for the first time.
Can any one help me? Every time I plug in my car charger into my desire, Car Home seem keep launching itself regardless closing it. I cant find the way to turn the auto run off. (i got a rooted desire with LeeDroid 1.8 installed)
I have read something about this being to do with magnets in the dock in the car. Other than not using the dock or removing the embedded magnets (or uninstalling) then Car Home will run as soon as the phone detects the magnets in the holder. I may just be chatting crap however LOL
Have you gone to the settings of the car phone app and turned off auto launch?

This weird as there are people out there trying to get the desire to do this!
There are no magnet in the desire though (I think)

the Desire does not have magnets in it but can detect magnetism hence the metal detector apps that you can download.
I have 4 options in my car phone app one is auto launch
I have found the solution, installed custom car home and made it my default car app

You have HTC's Car Panel, as opposed to Google's Car Home - both do pretty much the same thing though.

I personally found 'custom car home' more friendly, specially it allows you to add your own apps, and lets you select your own navigation, as i got copilot live and navigon

I read somewhere that the it launcher due to one of the pins in the car charger, that is or is not present on a standard data usb cable, This cause it to launch, Well so i've read.
1- standard car home doesnt let u choose ur own navigation, which is pretty lame, 2- its auto run is extremely annoying. 'custom car home' a lot better and friendly, also u can set it as default car home

Is there a way to set the screen to stay on on external power source? You used to be able to set different times for battery and power on my WinMo (Touch HD), but can't seem to do that on Android? I want to keep the music player open when on power source (in the car), so I can see whats playing, and easily switch to the next track without having to unlock the phone!
I know some apps can stop the phone from sleeping (sat nav, games, etc), or is there a better music app than the built in? (I find it simple and easy enough to use TBH).
Suggestions/answers on a postcard please

No problem. Just remember not to keep it on for too long as some people reckon it can damage the screen.

Hmmm interesting points on both of these. I see even with this setting on it dims (but thats fine for me).
People watch videos etc, or is it the NON moving items such as most of the music interface that may cause damage? I am only planning on leaving it on when driving (up to 3 hours at a time I guess, depending on the M6/M1/M25 ), so that shouldn't be too bad!
But what about the night clock, etc? I personally don't use it, but as it's a feature of the phone, surely the AMOLED screens can cope (SLCD not so sure on?)
Is there an app in the market compatible with ics, to change the colour led?
Thanks

Thanks for that - phone is upstairs on charge (as usual with its battery life hah, and I'm that lazy to go fetch it) - but I'll check when I go to bed later. Feel stupid for not trying this!
Ive found that turning off the screen still dosnt work for me but the app does actually work when i miss a call or text.

Thanks! new to android phones, works perfectly
It certainly works well.
But I find it to not work at times. Once I enabled the "force run in foreground" then I couldn't turn my phone screen on and had to take the battery out. So I think I'm fine with having it worked almost 80% of the time
It's a great app, quick and easy to setup.
But it does stop working sometimes, I've had it once or twice.
Does anyone else have problems with Lightflow? The notifications work well but then after I've checked the email or whatever, I turn the screen back off and the light carries on flashing, even though I don't have any more notifications
It depends on the notification, but if it's a Gmail notification and I open Gmail it goes away.

The app uses a few methods of clearing notifications.
At the moment 2.7.2 has a bug if you choose "screen" as the clear notification style. It's fixed in the dev build, but not in the market yet.
The others are manual (where you have to manually clear a lightflow notification in your notification bar) and finally "app". (some apps such as gmail have extra methods)
"App" monitors for entering the app (or pressing the "clear all" button in older builds of android) and clears when you've entered the app.
I'm guessing that if you swipe away a notification from the notification bar that the led might still keep going as with Gingerbread there wasn't a method to clear single notifications directly from the notification bar. I'm hoping this has changed in ICS. I know the accessibility service has had things added to it, but nothing jumped out at me that would add in the relevant hooks.
Remember when upgrading the app from one version to another (there's been a few updates over the last few days) that I'd recomment powering off and back on the phone.
Looking forward to running lightflow on a GN myself as I've just picked one up today.
This gives me chance to see if there are any cool features I can add into lightflow for ICS and specifically the GN.
Now, just to get my "real" job out of the way for the day so I can start playing with the GN!
does using lightflow affect the battery alot?
Apparently it drains alot
Lightflow gave me Sleep of Death, so I uninstalled it. All ok now.
Trackball alert pro is pretty cool too, one of my favorite apps on the n1, it's now compatible with ics , but currently only works on the modaco rom.

For those with Enterprise email/Exchange if you ever used Touchdown - might be good to go back.
Their light notifications work fine with Galaxy Nexus - set different notification colors for email, calendars and tasks
PS The Touchdown Tablet HD (Honeycomb) version actually works better though you need to pinch zoom out the email list to get the font smaller

Are you sure it's lightflow. If it is I'd be keen to work out what's causing it.
If anyone who had this issue is using lightflow, could they switch on file logging and then at least if it does happen you can mail to log to me and I'll take a look, but I've heard of others getting the sleep of death that have never installed the app.
I've been using light flow since I got my nexus last week, never had any issues. Great app!

No, it is not possible. Car mode is useless; it is locked to use only htc locations or google for nav, and only tunein for streaming radio (even if you own TuneIn Pro.)
I'm usin Sygic and except for two silent crashes, it runs perfectly.

Nope, not in Car mode. Believe me, I've tried. TuneIn is disabled in Setings :: Apps, but can still be launched by the Car mode app, and can't be replaced. Nor is it ijntelligent enough to pick up favorites from the Pro version, so yoiu have to maintain two sets of favorites.

Also, you can install the Google Car mode instead of using the included one.
You'll be able to add and/or remove all the apps you want.
Works quite fine here, but a little laggy.

Yeah, I'll likely have to install a third-party Car mode. Makes me wonder though; supposedly HTC's Car mode pops up automatically when you use the car dock. I wonder if that can be disabled or changed to another program?

In settings under Dock mode there is an option "Default action". It has the following options:
Show HTC dock screen
Open app
Do nothing
When I press open app it doesn't let me select an app so I'm guessing it either opens car mode or (and I hope this is the one but I dont have a dock to test it) when you dock it it lets you select an app (for example google car) and saves the option.

CoPilot 8
Hi,
Anyone using CoPilot 8 with their One X? Recently installed it & works very well with the exception that I cannot access the bottom of the screen (menu, hide & exit options) because the 3 dot menu covers it. This occurs in both portrait & landscape modes.
Anyone experiencing this and is there a workaround? Noticed on ALK's website that there is an update for the HTC One X however believe this is only for Premium versions...
You can use Tasker to launch whatever config you want (including apps) when the phone is docked and undocked. Easiest way is to use a tasker profile to detect when the phone docs.
Got mine configured to launch Bluetooth to connect to my handsfree, shut of Wifi, turn the volume up to max and launch a sat nav app then undo all that when undocked. I stopped using the Car app when I found the limitations being described here.

Yes, that is what I use instead. Nuts to HTC’s Car Mode.
I’ve set up a ‘Car Mode On’ task and assigned it to a Tasker launch widget on a home screen. I press it and Tasker runs through the following;
1. Screen Brightness: 90%
2. GPS: On
3. Bluetooth: On
4. 3G: Off (I don’t need it for CoPilot, maps on SD card plus I don’t want e-mails etc distracting me. )
5. Auto Sync: Off (Same reasons as above)
6. Media Volume: 100%
7. Wait for 1 second
8. Launch App: CoPilot
I added step 7 as if CoPilot launches too soon after GPS has activated, it *****es up about GPS being off even though Tasker has turned it on. Stops the need bring up the menu just to turn GPS off and on again.
(On my previous phone (Desire S) I also had Tasker drop CPU back to 66% to prevent overheating. Doesn’t seem to work yet on One X but I’ll keep trying. I tested it using System Tuner. Told Tasker to drop CPU 0 to 760Mhz when System Tuner runs. I opened System Tuner, and although the slider for setting CPU speed had responded to Tasker’s command and had set to 760Mhz, I could see from the CPU monitor that it was still going up to 1.5Ghz.)
As this is just a Tasker Widget that executes a pre-set task, you don’t get the exit tasks turning everything back to normal when you end your journey and close CoPilot. So I added a ‘Car Mode Off’ Task and associated widget which basically reverses steps 1 to 6.
