Whats this Icon? - Desire General

Been playing around with my new HTC Desire. Added a new widget called power control.
Accidentally i clicked the 2nd last icon which is next to the Brightness Option. Cant seem to tell what it does. Does it needs to be On (with the green bar under it) or needs to be off. Clicking the other icons it shows what they are for but not this one. Can someone help.
Picture of the widget attached and the current state of it.
2nd last icon next to the brightness.
Thanks for the help.

thats the SYNC option. To sync things like email, facebook etc based on what frequency you set for each.

Guess i need it on, because i get my google apps account to sync with the phone and the google apps emails also come there. Check facebook and twitter manually so its good.
Thanks for the help. Gonna turn the option on. Cheers

sync
The battery life life will be affected depending on the frequency of your settings

I leave mine off and just turn it on to check my emails... .I've found doing it that way while also using JuiceDefender has really helped my battery life...

Uninstall Friendstream if you want better battery life....

I was about to pull my hair out due to the pathetic battery life on this phone. I screwed and fiddled with every setting I know to fiddle with, with pretty much no luck. I would have to charge after roughly 6 hours of moderate use. Well, finally removed the friendstream widget thinking that would be enough...but nothing. I then went into accounts-sync and completely removed the "facebook for htc sense" account. I think that is what friendstream uses. Anyway, battery life is now actually pretty impressive. I took my phone off charger at 2am last night...played around with it this morning...a couple pictures/emails, about 10 mins. of google nav, showing my bro some things. Anyway, I am at 80% battery life (almost 12 hours to the minute). That is a HUGE improvement and I am now in love with my phone again . A GREAT alternative to friendstream (I think as good if not better) is Pure Messenger Widget. Does almost the exact same thing as friendstream (can include gmail, twitter, facebok and some other social utilities), but uses a ton less battery and is skinnable with htc sense skins to integrate nicely within the EVO.
Figured I would post for those that are having battery issues like I was....give it a try and you should be nicely surprised!
Where to get it though? Don't see that app in market. I can see all the suthors other apps fine.
Just curious... do you happen to remember what the sync interval was before you deleted it?

default for live stream is 2 hours I believe.
I, for one, appreciate linking my contacts with Facebook, as it provides me with birthday reminders and contact photos with very little effort. I could care less however for the live feed BS. I've unchecked "Sync live feed", and have increased the Sync duration to once a day.
Another big battery killer is the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601 CDMA battery trick, which I have seen great results from.
All of these suggested battery killers are software issues.. something HTC could easily help manage.. or perhaps someone could write a decent "Power Profile" for the phone that basically neuters the power hungry bg processes?

As long as you have the 'live feed' disable you can remove friendstream and still keep contacts synced. I do and the birthdays and pictures from facebook show up fine.
I am also not seeing it in the Market, but all of the dev's other apps are there.
I should have clarified. I deleted facebook for sense, then added back and only checked off sync live feeds. If you don't do this then it still updates and I have found sucks the life out of the battery at a ridiculous rate no matter what interval you set. I have been using my phone a good amount today (17 hours off charger) and I'm at 40%. Considering I was seeing yellow at 5-6 hours before, I am as happy as can be. CDMA was already set on my phone, the above change is the only change I have made and directly responsible for my battery improvement.
I cannot find pure messenger widget in the market either, so if anyone wants .apk, just let me know. I had it backed up.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip... I'm going to try and disable "sync live feeds" and see how it goes because I've had to practically keep my EVO plugged in since I got it!
if it was a free app go head an upload it as an attachment, else PM it to me please nice find
Also, You can probably remove the included Stock app from syncing all together, I prefer Google finance anyway. Also if you use the half screen twitter widget, you can turn off or set sync to one day since it will update whenever you open the app.
Did you remove the whole app "Facebook for HTC Sense" somehow or just remove the account and redo the account?
If you removed the app and put it back, can you explain how you did that?

You don't want to remove HTC Facebook Sense -- that's the app that allows you to sync your Facebook contacts with your contacts in Address book (the one that shows your pictures of your contacts).
If you want to remove FriendStream, it's best to turn off "Live Sync Feed" first (Menu - Settings - Accounts & Sync - HTC Facebook - Uncheck Live Sync Feed), then uninstall it; otherwise Live sync will always try to sync your feed continuously, thus resulting in battery drain.
I know, I was talking about the poster on the other page that was trying to kill the stuck "sync news feed" function. Even after you uncheck it, it still keeps updating the news feed. Must be a bug somewhere.
Anyway, I found that by removing your Facebook for HTC Sense account then re-adding it and immediately unchecking Sync Live Feed fixes it.

I wasn't addressing your post, but thanks for the heads up -- I was never aware of the bug... well, it's never happened to me anyway.
Yeah many people have found that even after unchecking Sync Live Feed, the people list still keeps getting all those annoying news feed updates. It makes the silly think constantly update and sync wasting what little valuable electricity we have.

[Q] Constant Syncing Since Update

Since I updated to the new OTA (Fresh rom 3.3.0.1), I have been getting the sync icon in the task bar and it isn't going away. I have disabled ALL syncing from the menu and restarted the phone (making sure all the settings saved) and it still shows the syncing symbol after a while.
I have tried foing a logcat and I am not seeing any activity that looks like it is syncing with anything. But the icon is at the top and my battery is draining faster then normal. When in the settings, I can also hit the 'cancel sync' button. I went in to all the syncable stuff in that menu and they are not the culprit since they all show 'start sync' as the button.
Any ideas?

Same issue, and it's not actually syncing...certainly not my facebook contacts.
Gonna have to switch if no fix soon.
I dont use the facebook contact sync.
I am not rooted so this may be less than helpful, but for a day my phone was doing this too. I put the Sync widget on my home screen and pushed it, voila. Stopped the issue. I tried everything, then the simple widget took care of it. NO idea if that will help you guys. Worth a shot.

Check the running processes, I don't use it either, but if you've ever had the fb app installed, the process will still try and sync, even after you uninstall it. Took me a while to figure that out, and I had to go back to an old nand to fix.

Hi, has anyone resolved the constant sync problem related to facebook for htc sense?
It is causing 100% wake. I remember flipz addressing a constant sync issue with his fresh evo ROM by determining that it was the absence of some HTC app causing it. But, for the life of me, I can't find the post.

Stock, Rooted EC05 sync issue?

If you are getting a sync error with Facebook, it will keep trying. Do you have good 3G/4G in your area? Is Wifi available? Reboot your phone and connect to wifi if you can and the sync will go through. Make sure all accounts and passwords are correct. Worse comes to worse delete all accounts and add them back. This worked for my facebook. The first sync takes a long time.

i removed everything except google and the icons went away. when i try to log into the facebook account, it keeps saying "login failed, try again later." so im assuming that was the thing causing my problem. so i just wanted to thank you very much, and ill add that facebook account later and let you know what happened.
looks like Oovoo was the actual culprit

Ah ha! As for Facebook, there are 2 apps, one is stock in the phone system and then there is Facebook for Android in the market. I forget which one worked better, but one works when the other one fails.

[Q] Turning off Photo Sync/All syncing

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to see if anyone has been successful in turning off Photo sync. Not sure what Google are playing at but having a "compulsory" syncing arrangement does not suit me. Didn't have this issue with my last android device.
I go into Gallery > Settings and the Photo sync is ON option just wont turn off....
Anyway, a way to turn off syncing all together would be great, even contacts, not fond of being "forced" to do that either.
Thanks in advance guys.

Nah ,as I said, didnt have this issue with my increadible s.
So yeah not real sure why I cant change that option. I think I mentioned that also.
Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks guys.
Have you been messing around with the Google+ app? Both of those options are in the app and can be freely turned off.
And like someone said, also in the sync settings.

Hey, thanks again. =)
No, I deliberately haven’t signed up to G+ because I have no use for it.
But yeah, It just wont enable me to turn off Photo sync in settings...
I have Accounts and Sync OFF all round but the phone just automatically syncs photos when I take a shot or anything....not sure where to and why...very frustrating....
Thanks again guys...
That is strange, I just tried testing it by taking a shot..nothing is synched/uploaded.
can you post a screenshot of your Sync setting & gallery setting?
Attached is my setting (I don't use G+ as well)
Maybe you should remove the account all together in the settings and then re add it and see what it does... I have G+(useless yes) and i can uncheck sync photos no problem... When i go online i don't see any pictures besides the one i uploaded myself on G+. hope that helps!

Well, if I remove the account, I can at least add contacts locally without being "forced" to sync, then I add my account and bam, no, you can add a contact with out in syncing with my contacts... Call me silly but I would like the "option" to sync things if, IF i want too....it seems I do not have the option here... =(
Vennstrom, I just want to say thank you for your time with this, and everyone else here also, in advance too. =)
Arm, I dont have the ticks on mine, none at all, no options to have on or off, appart from syning globally off but it seems to have no effect..that would be GREAT if it did... =/ whats wrong with my phone!!! =( I love the handset but if I just had the options to sync or not, I'd be a happy little camper let me tell you.
I cant even use the calender with an attached account and I "HAVE" to have one or no dice...so f'ing frustrating...why not a "My Calender" or "PC Sync" option like on my Incredible S....
Thanks again guys.
Please post the screenshot of your setting so we can help you figure it out.
What do you mean you don't have the tick??
Hey Vennstrom,
Yeah like no ticks for on and off. Sorry I havent uploaded any screenies...
I have just tried something though... I put my accounts and sync option ON for a moment...everything synced obviously but the ticks came up...wierd... I would assume if you have it OFF globally, it wouldnt sync AT ALL...but you must have to have it ON to turn induvidual settings OFF... Hasnt completly sorted my problem though... I'd still like a complete lock down on syncing...
The Calender is a worry, as in I cant just "display" my calender without it being chosen to sync also. I played around with that and turned it off and on in calender and what do you know...even though I had Calender sync OFF in settings....it still synced... A little flimsy if you ask me...
Its like you can have everything off...but if it wants to...it will just sybc anyhow...
P.S. I read somewhere if you root, you can delete the "sync.apk" and it will NEVER sync...could this be true??
Cheers.

Hey.
I dont think a screen shot is going to help now really, as I have worked out how to induvidually turn the syncing option on and off. I had bigger questions that was all. The calender issue plus the flimsyness of the phone syncing when it wants to even though the user has turned "OFF" syncing...
My bigger questions were, in my previous post, totally lock down syncing and if I rooted if I would have more control over this, that was all.
Thanks to all that have replied and helped so far. Thank you. =)=)

i didn't look much at the calendar or photos but for contacts android just assumes every contact should be synced somewhere. That somewhere doesn't need to be google though. I did a lot searching but it seems there isn't yet an application to get just fake sync.
For contacts i'm thinking about writing a sync provider that just does nothing. That should be enough to get android to not sync contacts. Than again, i'm not sure if i should, because what i really want is sync with my pc and i likely end up not using and not maintaining the "no sync" provider as soon as i got a good way to have that sync without using cloud services...
I'd think for at least some of the other things (e.g. calendar) it's the same, android/gapps just needs some provider that pretends to sync and every thing is fire for them...
I wonder why it seems that nobody has yet started some project for using android with as minimal as possible private data on google servers...

Yeah it'll be cool if I could like...not sync at all. I just don't have the need for it. Its very disappointing that its almost compulsory now. Not having a stab but its almost an "Apple" approach. Haha. At least you have control over icloud, and that's saying something. Android supposed to be flexible and customizable to the end... Oh well, we'll sort it out. = )

turn it off like this, works for me after flashing a new ROM:
option#1:
- go to accounts & sync
- new account (Google)
- enter details and untick every option (backup, etc) on subsequent screens
- don't join G+
- after account is set up, immediately click on it and untick "photo sync"
- open gallery and make sure sync is OFF
option #2:
Remove Gallery and use Quickpic instead
Thanks for your reply!! I appreciate the info. = )
Yeah I thought that was the only way. Cool, gotcha.
I can't thank in the xda app!! I will when I get to my pc.
Wonder if there's a Google service you can disable...
This is probably 2 months too late but replying in case anyone else needed to know how to turn off photo sync.
Was having same issue as OP and wanted to turn off photo sync but could not find the checkbox anywhere. What you have to do is first turn ON sync settings.
i.e.
Settings --> Accounts & Sync --> On
Click on the google account. Only then will you see the checkboxes. If global sync is turned off the checkboxes will not appear. You can then proceed to uncheck "Sync google-photos". You can turn global sync back to off after this.
Return to gallery --> Settings and google photos sync should now show as OFF.
Hope this helps any other person who doesn't like to be told when and where to sync.

Facebook is draining my battery

Hello,
I fully charged my phone's battery yesterday (it reached 100%), then I turned off WiFi and my data plan (ie, 3G was off). Basically the phone could only receive normal voice calls and SMS.
I was going to sleep, so I put it on silent and left it. No one touched it, no calls were received and no SMS either. The phone was basically idle for about 8 hours.
I woke up late today because for some reason, the battery was completely drained during the night. The alarm didn't go off.
When I charged it, I went to the battery settings and saw that facebook used 65% of the battery. How can that be possible if no one touched my phone. there was no internet connection for it to use facebook in the first place !
What's going on here, something is very wrong. How can I stop facebook from draining my battery's phone? Why is it doing this in the first place?
The refresh rate is set to 'never' and notification settings are set to 'inactive'.
Did you restore Facebook app from titanium backup?
After I flash custom roms, I find that Facebook app misbehaving if I restored via titanium. Usually uninstalling the app and downloading from market sorts it out.

Facebook runs in the background by default. It may be that Facebook is constantly trying to get a connection that does not exist. Go into settings, personal, accounts & sync and make sure the Facebook sync is turned off.
@smokestorm
no, didn't restore anything. plus im using stock rom.

I just checked, I have no facebook sync icon at all. I do have friendcaster icon with sync ON and now I changed it to sync OFF.
Facebook notifications kills battery.. I've removed the app.. but when I had it.. I would go into settings and disable all the notifications..
Facebook in general is a lost cause and this proves it more
