Facebook is draining my battery - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
I fully charged my phone's battery yesterday (it reached 100%), then I turned off WiFi and my data plan (ie, 3G was off). Basically the phone could only receive normal voice calls and SMS.
I was going to sleep, so I put it on silent and left it. No one touched it, no calls were received and no SMS either. The phone was basically idle for about 8 hours.
I woke up late today because for some reason, the battery was completely drained during the night. The alarm didn't go off.
When I charged it, I went to the battery settings and saw that facebook used 65% of the battery. How can that be possible if no one touched my phone. there was no internet connection for it to use facebook in the first place !
What's going on here, something is very wrong. How can I stop facebook from draining my battery's phone? Why is it doing this in the first place?
The refresh rate is set to 'never' and notification settings are set to 'inactive'.

Did you restore Facebook app from titanium backup?
After I flash custom roms, I find that Facebook app misbehaving if I restored via titanium. Usually uninstalling the app and downloading from market sorts it out.

Facebook runs in the background by default. It may be that Facebook is constantly trying to get a connection that does not exist. Go into settings, personal, accounts & sync and make sure the Facebook sync is turned off.

@smokestorm
no, didn't restore anything. plus im using stock rom.
@patruns
I just checked, I have no facebook sync icon at all. I do have friendcaster icon with sync ON and now I changed it to sync OFF.

Facebook notifications kills battery.. I've removed the app.. but when I had it.. I would go into settings and disable all the notifications..

Facebook in general is a lost cause and this proves it more

Whats this Icon?

Been playing around with my new HTC Desire. Added a new widget called power control.
Accidentally i clicked the 2nd last icon which is next to the Brightness Option. Cant seem to tell what it does. Does it needs to be On (with the green bar under it) or needs to be off. Clicking the other icons it shows what they are for but not this one. Can someone help.
Picture of the widget attached and the current state of it.
2nd last icon next to the brightness.
Thanks for the help.
thats the SYNC option. To sync things like email, facebook etc based on what frequency you set for each.
Guess i need it on, because i get my google apps account to sync with the phone and the google apps emails also come there. Check facebook and twitter manually so its good.
Thanks for the help. Gonna turn the option on. Cheers
sync
The battery life life will be affected depending on the frequency of your settings

[Q] Android mail eating battery! Please help!

This may have been addressed, but a search didn't reveal anything exactly like this. Please bear in mind that I'm an Android newbie!
I bought the Incredible 2 last Thursday. No rooting, nothing weird, still mostly stock. This morning it's running very slow, screen transitions jerky, etc. and even text based email takes minutes to open. I messed around in settings, and notice that Mail (com.htc.android.mail) is using 48% of my battery, more than twice what the screen is using! I force close, and the phone speeds right up, lag is gone, screen transitions smooth but, minutes later, Mail comes back on line and the phone goes to crap.
I've used more that 1/2 my battery in two hours. I notice that the uptime is 1 hr 58 minutes, and the awake time is 1 hr 44 minutes, so I assume that the mail app is also preventing the phone from sleeping.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!
This may sound obvious, but did you try resetting your phone? Turn fastboot off (settings > applications > click fastboot so it is unchecked) then kill mail, and before it has a chance to restart hold the power button, then shut down. The restart option might work, but for things like this I prefer a good old fashioned power down, power up. Anyways, power your phone back on by pushing the power button for two seconds or so. Then see how it goes. This is an error that I have not heard about, but a reset is a universal problem solver. If it doesn't work, tell us what kind of email accounts you have set up (pop, imap, exchange) and how many, and also the settings for checking the mail.
Hopefully the restart will fix it though.

Thanks! My limited Android knowledge told me to try a restart, but I actually didn't know how on the Incredible 2!!
Anyway, the problem went away for a couple hours, then came back!
I use a POP server for my work email, and gmail for personal. I really don't understand this, as nothing has changed since yesterday, but the phone has slowed to a crawl!
Try a third party email app. I don't know of any offhand as I only use gmail on my phone. My gmail account checks my imap account on another host so it's all together, and I can distinguish which account is which on the emails through gmail tags.
Umm I think this will require a factory reset, because you can't uninstall stock mail nor freeze it without root
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
You can temp root, and freeze the stock mail app if that is the way you decide to go. Instructions found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068544. But that sounds more like something faulty with the software, because like I said, I have never heard of that happening before. I would take it back to Verizon, complain incessantly, and point out that you could have fixed it yourself if the phone had an unlocked bootloader
Do you have them set to check mail constantly, push, or are they on a delay? Can you use imap for work instead of pop? I have four accounts set up on mine, including an exchange, and three imap accounts. The fact that it just started happening leads me to believe something broke in the system, though. A factory reset and re-flash may indeed fix the problem. Also, do you have good 3g coverage most of the day? Check your time without signal under battery status in settings. Click on cell standby and it should give it to you. Or are you using wifi most of the day?
Sorry for the rambling questions, just writing stuff out as I think of it. Trying to narrow down what the problem could be.
Thanks, again.
I'm using the mail settings that the school requires, so can't change them. Currently set only to update when the app is opened.
I generally get good cellular reception at work, and I have wifi as well. I've been trying it with or without wifi today, with no changes. I'll try a reset and see if that helps.
I just mentioned trying another app because I don't see these problems and I do not have the stock mail app configured in any way.

I've had the Inc 1 and now the two. I've always turned off the (auto sync) this would require yyou to open your mail and manually refresh or of you use the sync all widget it works that was as well. Seems to save a ton of battery only drawback being you have to manually check it. Ie. No mail notifications. Just a thought maybe you want to give it a shot.
Thanks, everyone. Using a combination of all your advise, the problem is resolved. I factory reset the phone, then installed only my gmail account. This worked fine all of yesterday, so I finally got off my butt and learned how to use gmail to read and send my work email last night. That seems to be working well. I'm still getting email notifications, but gmail is only using 3% of my battery, as opposed to the 48% that Android mail was using.
Still don't know what caused the trouble, but I'm very pleased with the solution.
Thanks again!!
Email battery problem also on Nexus S
I have also the problem that the standard email is consuming the biggest part of the battery - mostly over 50%. I use an exchange account and a pop email, but both not synchronized automatically (manual sync interval), and I do not use them so often - max. one sync a day...
Anyone an idea how to improve this?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I had also the problem (as mentioned above) with the standard android email programm and a so related short battery life. Since I deleted all email configurations there and installed K-9 mail client instead, battery life improved a lot. Before I could use my phone about 2 days, now it lasts for around 5-6 days...

No background sync or notifications for push apps

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but in the hopes that they are, I'm posting this. For some reason, I'm not getting any notifications for push apps. Specifically for me, its Gmail, Google Voice, and FB Messenger. The apps aren't even syncing. I have to manually go into each app and tell it to sync.
I've had Gmail and GV sync for a little while after a ROM flash, but it never lasts more than a half hour or so.
Any ideas?
Not sure what rom u are using, or if you are using titanium to restore apps... but try settings>apps>gmail (or other apps) and choose to clear data, NOTE: you will have to re-sync accounts by going to settings>accounts and sync and enter ur info. your contacts will disappear for a short time while it re-syncs. its worked for me on previous devices after flashing a new rom, not sure if it will work here....
Check what kind of Internet connection you have: settings>wireless&networks>more>mobile networks>acces point names. The one working is net.
Any luck with this? I'm having the same issue.
I tried moving the gv app to /system/app but it didn't fix it.
Make sure you aren't disabling sync via the power widget.. it sounds obvious but it happened to someone

Similar problem here as well. Google Talk only seems to give me a notification when I turn the screen on. Just got my gnex last week and running stock jb now (only rooted).

Sync and Data in Notification Area

When I am at work, the signal is not great therefore my battery drain tends to be the worst during this time of day. It used to be that with by the time I unplugged my phone (5:45am) until the time I would leave work (3:30pm), I would have anywhere from 25% - 50% battery. I now turn off the DATA & SYNC options in my Notification Bar options and I have been leaving work with about 70% - 75% battery.
My question is;
DATA i am fairly certain is what allows the phone the ability to scan internet or do downloads of any kind. I can still get text messages and phone calls WITHOUT the DATA option enabled. Is there any other feature I am missing with the DATA option??
SYNC i actually have very little knowledge of. What is it about these two features that drain the battery so much faster??? DATA i can understand, but how far reaching and strenuous is the SYNC option, while enabled???
Thanks in advance gentlemen.......
Sync is what allows the phone to keep you Gmail account and contacts up to date with the Google servers.
If you turn off data, you effectively turn off sync as well, as you are cutting off anything that would require data use.
All email accounts won't refresh, notifications from apps like Facebook or Words With Friends won't occur, etc.
SMS will work because texts are sent and received via the voice radio, not the data radio. MMS won't work.

Facebook contact sync, battery hog?

Hello everyone
I thought i should share what i just discovered. I disabled the syncing of facebook contacts, and my battery usage seems to have dropped significantly.
I have deactivated the autosync and notifications in the facebook app ages ago. The only change now was that in "Accounts and sync".
The first ~8h of my battery history is during the night (see attached screenshots)
Probably because Facebook sync doesn't work with ICS. I would be asking to snyc and continually failing.
I would recommend using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...axsync&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
It also syncs at a much higher resolution.
Just from that picture, it looks like your phone was holding wakelocks like crazy until you made your change. Was that the only change you made? Do you have better batter stats installed?
I'm on AOKP b31 with facebook sync enabled and I definitely don't see that kind of behavior. As of right now my facebook sync has held a wakelock for 70 seconds for the past 12 hours (push notifications working via the blackberry trick, notification updates set to never). Are you on a different ROM that might have a different method of enabling fb contact sync? I know AOKP's trick was turned down by a number of other devs but I forget what the exact reason was, might have been that it opens a potential security hole.

I always +1 Haxsync, its a great app! However, afaik it does not sync contact phone numbers, only contact pictures.

haxsync syncs my phone numbers ...
you shouldn't use contacts sync that have been hacked into roms because it makes your contacts unsecured that's why google and other roms like CM9 and Buggless Beast won't implement this feature ... fb needs to update its apis to allow secure native contact syncing

So haxsync will add the phone # of your FB friends that you don't have on your phone?
For me it just syncs the profile pic and their latest status. It doesn't seem to pull any more data like their phone numbers that they posted on their profile.
Haxsync doesn't sync fb phone numbers for me either. I remember reading somewhere that phone numbers weren't available to any 3rd party apps via facebook. .... and I just removed my facebook sync account and all the numbers I only had via facebook disappeared with it.
I use both haxsync and facebook contact sync because some of my friends have 3rd party app access turned off in their facebook settings, which blocks haxsync from syncing their picture. Can't blame 'em, but it's annoying that the official fb app works this way and the only reason haxsync(which does just about everything better) can't is because it's 3rd party.
that looks like
1) you seem to be losing signal very often (red parts in the signal graph) so apparently you are affected by the signal bug in 4.0.4 and that potentially affects battery life
2) all signal is lost from a certain point midway through (as if airplane mode was enabled) so the battery use went down
so, facebook sync is probably unrelated to what you're seeing

Yes, i thought it looked strange in the graph, but i had no problems using 3g, sending/receiving sms or calls during the whole day. I figured the graph just messed up or something.
The extremely frequent wakelocks are probably the reason to why i have to recharge my phone every 24-36h, but i thought it was the notorious bad battery of the galaxy nexus.
I've bought better battery stats now following JoeSyr's advice, hopefully i'll get to the bottom of what is causing my frequent wakelocks.
2 min later:
Seems like its RILJ who is responsible for the wakelocks, 6861 in 13h.. A new rom, radio and kernel might be in order
