I've returned my Desire from TMobile due to network issues and I'm currently waiting for a new one from Vodafone.
Since then, I've logged into my GMail account and found the Desire has messed up all my contacts. Luckily, it looks as though the numbers/email addresses are still with the correct people. But a lot of the pictures have been moved to other contacts, ie. Vicky's picture is now saved under Paul's contact entry!
Anyone else got this problem?

Sorry your having the issue though
I turned off syncing with my Googlemail account due to having duplicates on my phone...

Hello !
Initially i imported all my contacts from my gmail account. I also imported contacts from facebook and also linked them to the same people from my gmail contacts.
i create a new contact in gmail with phone info etc... it syncs it correctly to my desire... i edit the contact in gmail and updates it correctly (with the new info, emails etc.)
so far so good...
i then create a new contact in my desire... i input a photo and a phone number (mobile)... i save it and it updates my gmail account correctly (i test it by logging in to my account from my pc)...
the problem comes when i try to edit that contact from the desire. i edit with new fields, for example email and birthday, i save it, and it never updates it to my gmail account... stays on the phone ok, updated, but never gets updated in the gmail contacts...
anyone experiencing the same thing ???
thanx...
Do you still have this problem if you disable facebook merging ?
I will be able to test as soon as I get mine (probably on Wednesday)
Don't know. I don't think there is a way to stop it. Only to stop sync.
Hi off_d,
Just tested and get exactly the same, so its not just you!
Sync appears to work fine on contacts made in GMail online, as does editing those contacts (either online or on the Desire).
If you create a contact on the Desire it syncs fine initially, but any edits done on the Desire after that don't sync with the online one. Oddly any edits done on the online version seem to make it to the Desire though!
Not noticed this before, but its a big problem if you create a lot if contacts on your phone!
Ok, been playing with this a bit more and it seems to work now, most of the time at least.
It definitely appears to miss some changes!
Occasionally I edited on the Desire, syncd, checked online - no change, then syncd again, still no change online BUT the Desires version had changed back to the original (possibly as a result of copying the online version when it syncd?)
Definitely a bit odd!

exactly the same thing happened to me now. after i read your message i tested such situation...
my Desire contact had initially one mobile number and a foto... it updated my gmail contacts nicely... i edited again and added in the Desire an email and a birthday.. it never got updated online.... i then added a new email address online (on gmail) to that contact (the one i created on desire) and then all of a sudden it updates on the Desire. but it deletes the old email (the one i had inserted on the Desire), it deletes the birthday field (which also had inserted on the Desire) and it inserts instead the new email (which was added online).
very very strange... is it a Desire thing or is it a gmail thing ? is this happening with other androids as well or not ? anyhow, it needs to get fixed ASAP because being able to add contacts to your mobile is ESSENTIAL, as well as editing them. and being able to back them up online is also essential.
update: i edited a contact already on my Desire (which was added on my first boot from my initial gmail synchronization)... i changed their name and it updated perfectly within seconds on the gmail contacts online !!! hmm, is it maybe something to do with particular fields not being able to update ?
I read on a dutch forum that somebody thought it had to do with editing birthdays. I haven't tested it yet.
Is anybody here using Desire with Exchange?
I have contacts with photos on the Exchange and the contact details sync fine but not the contact pictures- they do not sync from Exchange to Desire.
Does it work for anybody here?
Any tips/tricks how to get it working?
I get the contact pictures from my Exchange account but if a duplicate Gmail or Facebook account exits, their picture seems to be the default unless you force it. If there's no picture, you may get a blank as you describe. Edit your contact and check for linked contacts.
Thanks ls1971, it is not the facebook or gmail contacts, I do not sync them.
I am using Kerio mail server which should provide most functionality of Exchange but the pictures are not pulled across so I will get back to their TS to see if this is something they are working on since you confirmed it is OK with "real" Exchange.
You may have something there. My mail is indeed a 'full' Exchange server account.
I used to use "poor mans" methods of exchange, before I switched to Android, which worked just fine, but when I got my Desire certain things didn't work, such as contact pictures and the only way I was able to get it working was to buy some Exchange hosting.
So if your like me and need certain features, I'd just stump up the cash for some real hosting, its pretty cheap to be honest, about £6 per month with 3GB storage and everything exchange has to offer.
i have the same with the latest update of kerio. lost all my pictures also.
Any update on this? Kerio has been updated to 7.1.0, but I haven't seen any specific info whether this has been addressed or not.
Unfortunately it has not been fixed in 7.1.0. Neither upgrading Desire to Froyo made any difference.
Hey guys,
My MD now has a Desire and I notice something strange happening when he syncs his outlook contacts.
Now I know from both sides (outlook, Android) , it doesn't really matter what you file someone's name as because when you search, it still appears either way. However, he is very particular so here is my problem.
When he syncs his outlook contacts to the device, on outlook they now appear as first name, last name. Even though they are set to File As Lastname, Firstname. Now if I open a contact in Outlook, flip the File As back from and to what it was, it then appears in outlook correctly (well how he wants it to).
However, next sync it will re appear as first, last... although file as is still last, first (Outlook)
Anyone have any ideas or noticed something similar?
I appreciate this is a minor issue but I would like to resolve it for him if possible.
Thanks for reading and any help appreciated.
Tell your MD to stop being so picky!!! LOL!!!
Seriously, though, I don't know - I stopped using Outlook sync and sync to my Gmail account now

i had this issue as well, it took days to sort out and once I had them all as I needed it I just installed gsyncit and uninstalled HTC Sync. Outlook and phone perfectly in sync wirelessly for £9 !
i'm thinking about getting a desire, currently have htc touch 3g wm and have it sync'd to my company exchange server . whats the best way to recreate the same push email & sync functionality on the desire? Would Gsyncit do the job? thanks in advance

no need, it will sync to exchange without anything other than your exchange details. No other software needed

This is what I used:
xxx.slipstick.com/contacts/fileas.asp (change xxx to www)
and it worked perfectly.
I found after I got fed up of change 500 contacts individually (twice)
Thanks for that Redskinblack, looks like it'll be a great work around for us. Anyone have any info as to weather or not HTC are ever likely to fix this though?
outlook sync with htc sync then tried to sync back after wiping the contacts on my phone sent all my contacts screwy, added them to wrong groups, linked them to wrong facebook contacts...
I've found exporting to sd and importing again much easier and works much nicer - lose my groups but that's not as annoying as re-linking them all...
obviously doesnt help the outlook issue though
If it helps, I've been trying to find a reliable method to sync Outlook 2010 contacts with the Desire. I had similar issues with HTC Sync reversing first and last names as well as problems syncing.
Having looked at Gsyncit but not wanting to pay for it, I found MyPhoneExplorer which was originally developed for SE phones but has been updated to include Android. It works well and syncs over wifi. You install the program on your PC and the app from the Market. In the program, you then select Outlook as the source of your contacts.
In order to avoid duplicated contacts, I deleted all phone contacts prior to syncing and it copied all the Outlook contacts to my Desire. The only issue was that the Facebook contact link to the phone contacts was broken. This was resolved by removing the account from HTC Facebook for Sense, logging in again and linking a contact.
Hope this helps someone.

This is a great explanation. Very useful. Thanks.
i had the same problem with windows mobile phones trying to sync to my computer. here is the solution : when to write a new contact in outlook say his name is ( Dave Smith ) open up contact field in outlook express and now point to new contact .where it says FULL Name ,click on this icon usually you would put the first name ,in this instance (Dave) in the box where it says First and (Smith) in the box where it says Last .Don't do that .where is says First just put the whole name in there i.e Dave Smith . save all info ,when you have synced your phone ,it will say Dave Smith in your phone.
hope this helps and you understand.
The free sync tool MyPhoneExplorer works fine for me and you can set the first, last option as well.
I'm syncing all my contacts from my Exchange account, and have birthdays as part of the contact info for some contacts. Now I found that on my Desire Z (unbranded, never rooted, original ROM), all the birthdays appear the day after the actual birthday of said person. Not cool to miss a friend's birthday by one day
I made sure that time zone settings, date format, etc. are the exact same on the phone and the server, but that didn't help. I completely removed the exchange account after messing with the settings, to make sure to give it a chance to update correctly. No luck.
This was not a problem on my HTC Legend which was syncing with the same Exchange account.
Of course I tried searching the forum, but didn't find any issues similar to this. I'm sorry if I just missed it.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas as to how to resolve it?
Just to note you are not alone.
But in my case the birthday is one day to early and has a time added (22:00:00.000Z).
Also didn't find a solution so far. Didn't have this problem with original HTC ROM. So you should also mention which ROM you are running. Have this problem with CM 7.0.3 and also observed it in Enhanced Email which are both based on original source.
HTC may have fixed this already.
Same problem
I have the same problem on my Sony Ericsson Experia Pro. Birthdays are one day earlier than on Exchange Server. Did someone find the solution?
Which TimeZone are you in?
Cause I know if you use NZST (GMT +12) it has that same error.
I have contacted HTC about this bug previously, and they reckon they are working on it.
their recommended fix was using another GMT+12 timezone.

I had this same problem. My solution was to use Google Calendar and to use Google's Calendar Sync to sync to my Outlook, rather than my phone syncing directly to the PC.
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Hi,
I have been searching around and can't find the answer I'm looking for.
Can someone advise if they have managed to sync their hotmail.co.uk to their HOX (or any other Android device) specifically using the MS Hotmail mail option (which defaults to server m.hotmail.com) or via the exchange option??
Hotmail.com addresses sync ok, just can't get my UK address to work. Just to add the hotmail.co.uk mail account is succesfully added however no mails are synced. Looking at the account under sync options the sync icon is red and at the bottom there is an error which highlights something like 'experiencing difficulties at this time - please try again later'. This error appears to be constant.
I know syncing hotmail.co.uk addresses is possible via the 'other' mail account option (which defaults to POP3 settings) and also alternatively by using the MS Hotmail app but would prefer the above - just would like to know if it's possible or not.
Thanks in advance,
GW
It just start happening yesterday so its not anything to worry about yet, I have the same problem.

UPDATE - I've just stumbled across something on Microsoft Answers where one user suggests to configure the account manuallly which you can only do through the exchange option (when you select the MS Hotmail option, various fields including the server name are greyed out).
Advises to use prefixes snt-m, dub-m, bay-m or debug-m in front of .hotmail.com in the server however unfortunately none of these work for me.

Not the case for me, I've been trying to do this for over a week now.
Did this use to work then but now it doesn't?

There are on-going problems it seems, mine periodically stopped sycning several weeks ago, would be okay for a bit, then eventually never sync'd at all. Microsoft don't seem to be bothered helping people fix this.
I then started using debug-m.hotmail.com and that got it working, then seeing the same advice others have mentioned I used the letter prefix I see when I log into Hotmail on a PC browser, and it has been working since.
There also seems to be another issue related to individual accounts that can only be fixed by Microsoft, so I'm thinking there are two issues.
Try logging into Hotmail on a PC and going into your calendar, a few weeks ago I was offered to upgrade to a new calendar, I think this has the effect of moving your account to a new server, which might help kick start everything again.
All in all though it is a mess from Microsoft.

Phil

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply.
Can you just confirm that you actually got it working (previously) with a hotmail UK address with debug-m.hotmail.com as the server? If so I assume you setup a manual MS exchange account under the mail account options to do this?
Just loaded up MSN calendar on desktop but there was no option to upgrade or anything :-s.
I've raised a question on MS answers site, hoping someone from MS will look at it and check out my account to see if they can do anything. Other than that I guess it's just a waiting game or switch to POP3!
GW
Anyone experiencing issues with hotmail UK email addresses?
Hotmail.co.uk addresses still not working with the m.hotmail.com server - anybody got this working or has an alternative solution, except using POP3 or forwarding?
