1 week Desire: What's good, what's bad - Desire General

Hi!
I thought I'll just give a little feedback after having the Desire for one week now, if anyone has any more infos or thoughts please post! I'm on a T-Mobile UK 18 month contract.
What's good:
- the screen is absolutely fantastic, pictures and especially HD videos look amazing
(I downloaded the Lady Gaga - Telephone 1080p version from Vevo, converted that to 800px width and when I first saw the video on screen I was actually speechless for a minute)
- the speed in general is great, it's like a little laptop
- internet surfing is great, especially when flipping through the animated browser windows
- the 3G speed is excellent, I always get 1.5 - 2 MB everywhere in central London and it's always an HSDPA connection on T-Mobile
- I'm very happy with the phone in general, since I saw Steve Jobs' presentation of the new iPhone OS I'm even happier, multitasking and the general UI doesn't look anywhere near as nice as HTC sense!
What's bad
- no app storage on SD cards (only when rooting etc.)
- the volume, especially when playing movies, is far too quiet when using the speakers or headphones. i can barely hear conversations when all volume controllers are on maximum. i was planning to use the Desire as a media player for long flights etc. because videos look totally amazing on the screen, but if I can't figure out a way to boost the volume without rooting etc. that's my biggest point of concern
- the app situation could be better, but i guess after summer/autumn this year so many people will have bought an Android phone that the demand will boost the development of new apps greatly, so I'll just be patient
I did send an email regarding the app storage on SD and the volume issue to HTC 3 days ago and I'm still waiting for an answer. Will post it here once I get it.
So if you have any points to add, or any infos regarding the above, please post!
Thanks
Dean

I see 1 problem and that's the app situation. There are plenty good but you're right not as much as there could be...but there will be.
The other 2 points will be fixed when root is public. Louder volume hack and apps2sd.
Root is simple. People always create a 1 click solution like they did on the HTC Tattoo.

Please see this thread for a whole list of what's bad.
But what's good about this device far outweighs all those bads

Try using in-ear headphones if the volume isn't loud enough. Technically the volume output will be the same/similar, but they'll block out most (if not all) of the background noise from your surroundings. Makes for a very clear and loud enough sound.

@ ephumuris
sorry i'm actually quite new to Android, what does "root going public" mean exactly, is that a solution where you won't destroy your warranty and can install apps2sd etc?
@ carrige
thanks for that, but i'm actually using in-ear headphones… mp3 music is fine, but movies are not loud enough. I was searching for headphones with a built in amplifier but couldn't find anything.

WIFI SUCK
THE WORST part, the WIFI setting and capability IS SUCK!
Unable to detect hidden WIFI??? Even my HTC HD is able to do that! damn...hopefully they can fix that in some ROM update.

I'm a bit curious, is it because of the weak ass antenna (ala iPad) or just ill coded firmware? Because if it's the former, there's nothing to do about it but replacing the handset...

What is that hidden WIFI?

If you mean can't detect if not broadcasting SSID then mine can. WiFi is pretty good on my Desire - No complaints.

Same here, except that when using Wifi power saving, it sometimes refuses to reconnect to the AP, requiring a device reboot (or just leave the thing for 30 mins or so). Coverage is excellent, stability (once connected) seems excellent.
Question to the OP: why are you using hidden SSIDs anyway?

Indeed... If you're that paranoid a MAC filter does the job well enough.

Been using it 3 days now.
A minor design flaw I think is the non-hot-swappable SD card slot.
I have a Touch Pro and I've worked with the Legend where that is a feature.
But no biggie, really.

Remove google account?

Ok so I have 2 google accounts on the phone. I don't use the first anymore, so is there any way to remove this? I keep getting the "some applications use this and it cannot be removed (factory reset to remove)" which i really dont want to do!
Anyone figured out a work around?

As far as i know you have to do a factory restore, this is the only way to delete the account you have on your phone now.
So make sure you put in the account you will use all the time, other wise you will have to reset again....
hope this helps......
that sucks...its crazy they havn't imagined people may change accounts!
yes, I agree, but don't get me started, because this is just the the tip of the iceberg!
The email client doesn't work properly!
The native video player is pathetic!
The audio volume/quality through the speaker is a joke!
The headphone volume is hopelessly retarded!
The customer service from HTC is beyond contempt!
What on earth were those Google retards thinking......that we wouldn't notice that all of these things work properly on the iPhone!!!
Well I for one have had enough, I intend to sell this SPASTIC piece of garbage and and wait for the new Iphone!!!
And all you HTC fanboys out there, don't even bother to comment, because I really wanted this device to work, I really did......BUT IT JUST DOESN'T!!! Far too many bugs, and no possible hope of support from HTC. They only support the newest devices, and as they bring out a new device almost every month, what possible hope have we got for regular updates? Shall I tell you.........ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!
The only critique I have of the current Iphone, is the screen, but otherwise, it works straight out of the box, and I believe that they will fix this on the new model. So shame on you HTC for not listening to your customers, if you treat us with contempt, we will go elsewhere!!!
Can't comment on headphone volume as I don't use it as a media player - it's a phone - but speaker volume seems fine to me. Again, I don't use it often so can't really comment.
Only use Google Mail client which works fine, never bothered using the other client as I've got my laptop for that
Other than that I can't fault the Desire - it's owns the iPhone in every department bar music and there's no other phone I'd rather have. And I'm not an HTC fanboy - I'm an Android fanboy!!

Email works great for me, no issues at all, better than most platforms so far.
Video mplayer is fine. I use Act1 player anyway but full movies encoded from a BR look fantastic. Yeah no Divx, but it sucks and i have no Divx anyway so dont care.
Headphone quality and volume is fine. It meets the legal maximum volume in the EU for headphones, just like all devices have to.
Speaker quality isnt the best ever no, but but again does anyone actually use that for music? Really?? Its fine for voice.
HTC were great when i needed my HD2 repaired. Fast friendly and did a great job.

TANGO videocall app is out and working perfectly on Galaxy S !

Yesterday I have tried this FREE app and videocall from Galaxy S to Desire was perfect, I could not believe how high quality video and voice are ! Fring and Qik are no longer needed since their quality is at least 5-10x worse than this so I have uninstalled them right away. Sometimes you must tap that icon for changing camera to get the video but other than that it works great, I am really surprised how simple and nice it looks and how it does not require registration, for 5 sec you are able to make a videocall for free if you are on WiFi.
http://www.tango.me/
So the front camera already works?
Yes, I didnt have this app before yesterday but now it works perfectly on Galaxys front camera ! Really new experience with this phone, I cannot believe how much better it is than my old Xperia X10.
Is it possible that there is no interrest for this great app on this forum ? The only videocall app that works how it should and no one is reporting how it works and on what phones does it work. Thats strange...
The fact that you can only video chat with other Tango users is holding it back. And the fact that it's only on iPhone and Android further limits how many people can use it.
For those that can use it and can get people they want to video chat with to use it, I'm sure it's great...
Might be useful to me if it either had a PC client or could video chat with Skype users. But the a**holes at Skype would probably block it then.
Well in comparision to FaceTime which works only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and only on WiFi this is reinvention of the wheel Also, Android + OSx covers A LOT of todays phones. Only thing that I also would like to see is PC client and if Tango makes that there is no need to use Skype or MSN anymore since chats are mostly on Facebook and videocall will be on Tango since the quality of the video is simply sick.
Skype are bunch of idiots, they have had videocall on Fring and I have tried it and it was POOR and DISASTER ! Video quality was like 2/10 with like 10 fps video and the voice lagged 2-3 seconds. Totaly unusable, I have tried it once and unistalled Fring, thats how bad it was. But Tango left me breathless when I tried it, really something new and I could not imagine that my WLAN with 30 kB/s upload speed could stream video with such quality and almost no lag.
Actually, for now, the only videochat for Android is Tango and there is nothing close to this app when it comes to free videocalling.
Yes, just tested. Working like a charm.
Pozdrav
Works a ok on my sgs.. and my wife's iphone.

Maybe where you live, but Android and iPhone only make up a small percentage of phones among people I know.
Hopefully this app can get a Symbian, Windows, Linux and Mac version so it can replace Skype completely.
I'm still waiting for something that lets me video chat with skype users on PC.
I really dont need Skype or MSN as soon as this app gets PC app. Android will be future, Symbian is dead, N8 is nothing special, Nokia is the past, WinMo could also be soon forgotten, that Win7 Mobile looks really lame and stupid to me so I think that Android community will have the biggest grow in next years.
Thanks for all the compliments - we've been working hard on this application for the past year.
Last Friday we pushed out an update that fixed the front camera on the i9000 and helped reduce battery consumption more than 50%.
Eventually, we want to make Tango work on any device that has a monitor and a camera, but we're focusing on making it the best mobile-to-mobile video calling application first.
Thanks for trying out Tango - let me know if you have any suggestions.

I did have this application installed, but the battery drain was so bad I had to uninstall it. 50% reduce consumption is still unacceptable when it can be 0%, why don't you give the option to exit the app and stop the service draining the battery?
Leaving gtalk on hardly sees any usage of battery, surely you should be able to achieve the same result
Now that we are at phone to phone issue, can you make it work with the bluetooth properly?
I can hear fine but when bluetooth is connected both bt and phone microphone don't work so the other side can't hear me.
Also some notification or presence light would be very useful so we know which contact is online. Right now we're calling blind as my wife uses iphone that does not run in the background and even with the backgrounder it sometimes goes offline. Sucks that only she can initiate call or I have to call her first to turn on tango.
from what i hear the tango engineers are already working on the bluetooth issue (said it somewhere on their facebook)
since i dont need bt i can only say that this apl is awesome.. i mean have you guys seen the video quality on this thing?

Tried it with iphone 4 user and it works great.

My 1st Impressions of NoDo

It is in general alot smother, and I have not had it crash once!
The Marketplace is much better, no crashing, its always slick, doesnt hang while loading more apps in the list, and the new way of searching is much better.
(However I cannot find a few apps, I assume they have been removed from the marketplace, for example MusicShark?)
Copy and Paste works quite well, took me a few tries to realise the paste section is where the text correction area is.
Faults I have noted so far are...
1. Not sure if it is just me because I have only tried once so far, but after pairing with my car headunit. My car headunit no longer detects the HD7 as a bluetooth audio streaming device, and only as a handsfree device. Which is very annoying.
2.When pressing search in internet explorer, it no longer loads a web page, but loads the bing application.
Overall, it makes the phone even nicer to use, it just feels that bit more responsive, and it way more stable!
Has anyone else used NoDo, who can confirm the above faults?
I am running it on an O2 UK HD7 with 32gb.
UPDATE: after 1 days usage
Im finding reception better, battery seems to be a bit better too. Still not had one thing crash on me.
Bluetooth audio streaming does work, however its still low quality like it was in 7004/7008, so I cant wait to unlock it again so I can change the registry entry.
Audio streaming still does not work for playing videos.
Push notification seem to work fine all the time now too, I had problems initially getting them to work on some applications (they would work after trying a few times/restarting) but now they just work.
I havent had chance to check for hidden wireless networks yet, the WiFi menu seems identical though (There is nothing to manually type in any settings.)
Overall, it feels now like how I would have expected the phone to feel when I first got it. Everything it does, it does it really well, and it is a pleasure to use.

That's how it's supposed to be.
I can remember a branded T-Mobile ROM where you've been redirected to a stupid search website after pressing the search-button but the standard action is opening BING.
We have three devices in this house hold, a HD7, 7 Mozart and a HD2 with Windows Phone 7, obiously the HD2 hasn't been released yet but the other two are much more reliable. I haven't had a single screen tearing on the HD7 since the update and both phones are much more responsive especially within internet explorer where I used to have numerous crashes.
Copy and paste works lovely although on occasion I have to tap a couple of times for it to pop up the option to copy.
Marketplace is more reliable and stable than the original RTM build and the search changes are greatly welcomed.
I haven't really noticed a change in speed loading application, although the only program I have ever had issues with is Bejewelled Live which takes quite a while to load even after the update.
All running nice and smoothly, just missing having Chevron WP7 to copy over my ringtones.
Just tried Bluetooth again, it works fine
I'm glad it shows the bing app instead of Yahoo search like it did before. Its just I expected it to load the bing web page
So all in all I find it perfect now, just need some sideloading back
You Guys receive the Official NoDo update or did you Flash the leak ROM. I'm Glad to hear that its a STABLE Update & Didn't cause any problem, otherwise this general form will be flooded w/ cry babies.
And what about connecting to hidden wifi networks and sound output while playing videos while using a bluetooth headset?

Good call - and not just watching video through the headset but using the headset's button to initiate Voice Commands and the headset's microphone to talk the command into.
Just posted a quick update.

After almost half year and MS still can't get this obvious bug to fix. The next update (Mango) will take another half year, and MS is totally silenced when it will get resolve (and who knows if that would be delay too base on MS's current pace). I am totally sick of it and finally have to leave the MS mobile camp after 10+ yrs relationship with MS (my 1st PPC device is iPaq 2210 and my last would be Samsung Focus).

I have to say one thing, some apps really do load faster!! Max and the magic marker used to take an age to load. Now it seems to load in less than half the time.
I wonder if the delays to the update were due to manufactures including bug fixs for specific phones, which means following updates shouldn't be delayed
Is scrolling in 3rd-party apps better (i.e. not lagging like it is now)?
Not really, I feel like it might have improved slightly... but that might just be because I want it to feel faster lol
i also had some first Impressions of my new nodo
new voice command sound, also understands me very good now.
new htc theme color (nice green)
mozart camera has autofous now (kinda annoying does anyone else have sound feedback, like clicky sound?)
but it does great pictures now, 2 shoots, both perfect, maybe it was luck but it seems it working way better now..
autofocus in video has improoved alot, also recording quallity has greatly improoved in low light and its more stable it seems! yay!
office version 14.0
sharepoint workspace mobile 14 , is that new?
overall its breezing fast, you press it, it opens. awesome!

The reason some third party apps lag is because they're badly coded, so no OS update in the world will fix this.

Is anyone juggling both Android and WP7?

I'm asking since I'm gonna be picking up a Dell Venue Pro (again) I been using Android for a while and I enjoy it. The thing I love the most is the integration with gmail and calendars. Being able to open my calendar on my Macbook and for it to automatically update my calendar on my Droid Pro is convenient. From what I remember, WP7 should sync up the calendar with your gmail account but I'm wondering if theres anyone out there that is able to balance using both phones? For example, I want to be able to write down notes on one phone and for somehow that carry over to my Dell Venue Pro. There was a program called AK Notepad for Android and whatever notes I'd write down on my Droid Pro, I'd be able to access on my Nexus One.
I still carry around my Nexus One without SIM...just because Android allows me to do many things I still cannot with my Optimus 7... so for now, at least until Mango update, I will be carrying two phones.
I have several android devices to play with but still carry my surround as my every day phone. I like both. As to having full cloud based sharing on multiple platforms? I don't think they play that nice quite yet

Apparently Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/) is almost ready for Windows Phone 7, which should allow you to create/access notes on pretty much every platform out there.
Try using cloud based apps. It's pretty easy between iPhone and Android, or Android and Android.
It's not that easy with WP7 because we don't have too many apps right now. Looking forward to it!
Juggling between a samsung focus and hopefully in a few hours a galaxy s2. Until mango, the galaxy s2 will be my main phone tho
I have both.
Actually the fact that many users use both speaks for itself....
Anyway I have both of them and ditched WP7 because carrying two devices to do the same thing is kinda nonsense.
There's nothing WP7 does Android can't do
However there are tons of things Android does while WP7 just can't.
WP7 may be very appealing in some scenarios.
Just write your notes in the gmail calendar and sync it on both devices, that's what I do, works like a charm.

Plus on Android you can send to calendar notes from Note Everything
I also have my wildfire without sim and my htc trophy. I don't now if i will keep the trophy. I am giving it some time to convince me. I am carrying 2 phones for now. I'm not a big wifi user but the same thing happens with bluetooth and it's so disgustingly annoying!! OneNote Exists for WP7 and you can view it in a browser. EverNote has too many restrictions for how much data you can transfer, and it requires yet another account creation (ugh!).
Android phones usually come with a memo app (my Vibrant has it), and they typically allow you to send notes via SMS/MMS, Email, etc.
I carry both an HD7 and a Vibrant with Active SIMs in them everywhere. I put my Unlimited Data SIM in my HD7 when I got it because of Zune Pass, but I'm about to switch it back to my Vibrant.
Audio Quality on the Vibrant is 200% better than on the HD7. You basically need headsets with the HD7. The Vibrant's sound can fill a decent sized room. Call and Speaker Phone quality ... the comparison is the same. Vibrant is wildly superior. It's like comparing a surround sound system to a pocket radio...
The HD7 is useless as a phone comapred to the Vibrant. The signal is consistently 2 bars lower and call quality is more volatile. I feel like I'm in the middle of New York on an AT&T iPhone 4 when I'm on the HD7. The Vibrant performs flawlessly.
The HD7 is only useful as a PMP IF you have a decent pair of headsets or a BT Jabra device with FM transmitter in your car (like I do).
The terrible speaker and cell radio in this thing is already enough to relegate it to backup status, but there is the issue of Apps and Services integration.
Android has better apps. After heavy use of both phones. The Android versions perform better and are more stable as well. Twitter for WP7 (even Birdsong) and Twitter for Android... the Android version runs circles around it. Same for Facebook. LinkedIn doesn't exist for WP7.
No decent IM Applications. Half-baked MMS. Can't send Videos off the device via MMS or Email.
A phone can be made better (maybe the DVP has better speakers than the HD7, and a better radio with better data speeds and call quality), but the OS is half-baked and puts way too many limitations on what you, or any app can do. This means there is a definite roadblock IRT functionality that anyone can hit on WP7 that isn't possible on some other platforms.
In addition to that, there are a ton of applications that are missing from the market, and those that are coming (that matter) won't be here for another 6 months or so.
If I was "upgrading" from a dumb/feature phone it probably wouldn't be an issue. But coming from WM/Android/WebOS and having used iPhones more than enough... It's unacceptable as a daily driver.
It has all the detriments of an AT&T iPhone in New York (poor reception/call quality/wildly flunctuating signal strength that never goes above 3 bars even standing under a 3G tower) with none of the benefits (High Quality Apps, Services Integration, Top Apps). In addition to that, the Audio Quality makes it hit and miss even as a ZuneHD replacement, and the Codec Support is just not cute compared to something like a Galaxy S device. There is no DLNA capability, either. Battery Life is not better than an iOS/Android device, so that's not an advantage.
Disclaimer: Some of these issues (in particular the reception/call quality problems) may be an issue with the phone and not the OS itself - but T-Mobile only sells one WP7 device in carrier stores so take that for what it's worth. One other person I know has an HD7 and when I asked him how he likes it he responded (I'm quoting him word for work...) "The call quality is ****, but it's okay I guess." So I'm pretty sure it's not due to having a lemon device

I don't use BT much but I understand the frustration, however the entire platform has been launched under the premise that it's not static or even completed as far as I understand. And given the track record of how MS usually deliver products (a main product and then many "hotfixes" and service packs) I expect most of these small things will be fixed in time.
Still annoying that they manage to miss such apparent things.

Android does this as well, that's why some applications (like Trillian for Andorid) have a setting to keep WiFi on when the phone sleeps.
I actually prefer it that way. If the phone is charging the WiFi stays on, however. They do it to conserve battery life, and that was a good decision...

Well atleast the option is there unlike in Microfot's product.
BTW, in the areas where you might have a weak cellular data signal havung your phone connected to a Wi-Fi access point is morr power efficient netting better battery life.
Kind of surprised at the number of people with dual phones. I have a Surround and an Inspire 4G. Before I upgraded to Gingerbread, the Inspire 4G was just so damned choppy, I couldn't really use it for long before I was ready to throw it. Now, it is my primary phone. My Surround has so-so build quality and much more limited functionality. I certainly wish for turn-by-turn directions via Bing maps. NoDo has made it much more fun to use as a communication tool with C&P, and it's smooth as can be. If my work would get the Exchange server up and running instead of using a third party host, I could see it being my primary phone. Until then, its all Android.

with an HD7 that would be everywhere, becuase the radio is so terrible it can never go above 3 bars even if I'm standing under an HSPA+ radio. My Vibrant's radio is 100% better.
I cannot use the HD7 as a phone, it's just too terrible. I only use it to play music these days and after I ETF one of these lines in a month or two I'll probably think hard about getting rid of it - probably just enough to cover the ETF fee, of a bit less than that...

Multiple Issues

Hi there,
This is my first time reaching out into XDA for my issues with my phone, and I'm sorry if I am repeating things that other people have mentioned, or solved, but I don't know where else to go after searching through the topics, and not seeing anything specific for my problems.
These are issues that I'm noticing in general, and from coming off a Samsung Galaxy Note;
-3G/HSPA+ disables/drops out during a phone call (I cannot browse the web during calls)
-LED Flash cannot be used during a call (I haven't seen this happen on any other phone)
-Music skips (resolved only after restarting phone)
-Phone only takes 2-3 shots within 2 seconds when the shutter button is held down
-Camera takes completely over saturated photos (raw steaks look purple instead of their fresh, red hue)
-LED light is 3 times (generalized) dimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Note
-In mail, there is no 'Mark All Read' option (thinks that all messages that go to the phone are new)
-In mail, there is no 'next' or 'back' button to go from message to message. (The only option is to get out of the message, and tap on the next one you want to read.)
Can anyone help with these issues?
OR should I get a refund/exchange for the phone?
(I had more, but I cannot remember those issues right now.)
I'm using 1.28.707.10 and the phone is from Singapore.

Try playing with the camera settings; you can dial the saturation back a bit, and also make sure you're using the appropriate White Balance for the lighting conditions.
I can't say I use the led much, let alone during a call, so can't comment on that.
Regarding browsing while on the phone, I used to have that problem on one of my old phones and was told it was a network limitation rather than phone limitation.

The way I think it works is.
If your handset is sitting idle and all data is off (incl sync) then it will show 3g. If you make a call then 3g will continue to show.
If you then went on to use data, the call would remain on but the data would be routed through the HSDPA element of the same basestation.
There is no reason why you cant make a call/browse the net on 3g….you can do this with 2g (EDGE). You cannot do it with 2g (GPRS)
Steve
None of them seems to be issues to me...
# network limits simultaneous call or data...try it on wifi....u can achieve both.
# camera takes pictures, which u can select the best shot.from those..its a feature.rather than a bug
# saturated pics...well thats the camera u get with HOX.... I wd prefer DSLR anytime over any of the mobile cameras ....
# mail app....well i dont use that...gmail has all functions....
# note has a bigger display too...

The camera problems can be solved in the sertings,i had the same issue,as for the 3g that drops i don't know what to say because i've never tryed to browse the web while talking on the phone, but i don't think that this is a phone problem,i thibk is a network problem. For example a friend of mine has an Iphone 4 with jailbreak and some apps and he is using a different network than me,and when he is making a call the network uses the 3g in this process even tough he isn't making any video calls. As far as i understood this happends because (in my country) the service providers introduced HD voice (witch i think is a big crap) and the only way your phone can use that service is trough 3g.

The Rogers Wireless network allows you to browse the internet while on a phone call. I haven't encountered this issue before, until the HTC One X.
3G does appear during a call (at least for the first few minutes), but the moment that I open up Facebook, or browse the web, it disappears.
If the;
-iPhone 4
-BlackBerry Bold 9900
-Samsung Galaxy S II
-Samsung Galaxy Note
can do it, why does the HTC have to be so backward on this 'feature'?
I use mail because I have more than one e-mail. One for work, and gmail is personal.
When on a phone call, and taking a picture at night, it tells me that LED cannot be used because I'm on a phone call. There shouldn't be anything stopping the LED from being used during a call. It doesn't make sense.
In any case, I'm getting a new replacement. Hopefully this will take care of the camera speed, music skipping, and network utilization capabilities (as well as the LED flash brightness).
Thank you all for your replies, I'll update when I get the new one.
If anyone can still help (I understand there's a file that you can delete that is commonly on the stock ROMs that causes the music skipping, but I don't know how to get rid of it.) please do!
Why don't you try a custom ROM like...ARHD for example (Android Revolution HD) and see if you have the same problems. If you have the same problems get a replacement.
You're a serious multitasker! Talking on the phone while browsing and taking photos....at night in the dark, no less

I want to be able to look up what I'm talking about, and in case of any random photos that I want to take, that's why I got this fast snapper in the first place!

Will ARHD work with a phone from Asia, or Singapore?
Can you help direct me as to how I go about doing that, straight out of the box?
