So recently i went to Japan for a 3 week holiday. It was good blah blah blah
I decided to take my desire as it would be useful to use when wifi was availabe
However, on many occasions, mostly when drunk....I decided ''**** it, i'll turn off airplane mode and check my e-mails'' I did it more than a few times, but not enough to worry about my bill
So today, i got my phone disconnected by t-mobile. This promted me to immediately call them and ask what's up. They said my account was disconnected by the fraud department as my account seemed different from usua. I told them that i'd been in Japan so maybe it was just because i was now back in uk, the bells started ringing and that nothing was wrong and they should reconnect my line.
I asked how much my bill was
£580!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg!!! apparently i racked up £400 just through data usage!!!! and the rest in calls
I knew it was £7.50 for 1mb but i didn't realise that checking my e-mails now and then would rack up such an amount
so word of warning....next time you visit somewhere outside your home country....either leave your phone at home, or don't use data or even answer the phone
The worst part was i had to pay them there and now just to get my line reconnected.
second word of warning, always have a spare bit of cash in your bank for a rainy day/extremely expensive phone bills
it makes you wonder what the Desire does when it connects.
ps
I still don't believe anyone that says they got more than 12 hours of battery with normal usage. I seriously need to keep everything to a basic minimum to get a day out of it. but if i use it just normally...then yeah...12 hours is optimistic
ouuuuch!! thats my input to this thread.
You sure you didn't go on porn while you were drunk also?
Uuuuuu!!!! That really sucks!!! Something similar happened to me once when i went to Cuba but it wasn't as terrible as yours, the again, my phone didn't have data back then!!!
ps; i can get 3 days of batt on normal use (includes gmail on push, ocasional word on g-talk, couple of messages a day, couple of calls a day and 10 mins of browsing a day and the ocasional game) and if i happen to push the phone a bit more i still get 2 days easily so there must be something sucking your battery dry!!!!
Just as an example, i havn't used the phone much these days and i'm on my fouth day and i'm pretty sure it'll reach tonights charge no problem.

That only works out at 17mb data per week ( £400 / £7.5 / 3 ) which is actually a pretty small amount of data. I'd expect my phone to burn through that in less than a day for my email usage.
If you really want to know how much data your Desire chews through, install a net counter, but of course in your particular case it's rather closing the stable door after the horse has bolted!

Dave
I think T-Mobile has ripped you off. When I was also in japan, I was using data including gps but my bill was nowhere near yours. I am on Vodafone.
I would never wanna check my email that much! Ha ha

Ouch, that bill hurt. But s**t happens. You should not have to go into airplane mode by the way: There is a checkbox that enables data connections while roaming, just keep it unchecked.
Anyway, about your battery: you should check your partial wake usage. I had trouble with the battery on my desire, until a recent OTA update to 1.20.207.3. Everything seems to be fine ever since then.
You can check your partial wake usage by:
- dialing »*#*#4636#*#*«,
- then going to »Battery history«,
- with dropdowns at »Other usage«
- and »since last unplugged«.
Look at »Running«. This shows useful data, especially if you have been on battery for some time – like 30min – with your phone in stand-by. Some application/service may be blocking the sleep state of the device. Then you will notice »running« at 100% or at least very high – even though the phone was supposed to be in sleep state.
Also search the forums for »potential cause for excessive battery usage«. Since I am a noob here, I cannot post the link, so please use search...

Yeah, every time you come out of Airplane mode (to make a call or whatever) your phone will try and sync because it knows it's been "out of the loop".
Just keep data roaming off or delete the APNs.

Ahem! Vodafone used to have a "reasonably sensible" (and I use that term loosely) data roaming package - you should see Vodafones new data roaming tariffs that come into effect in June!

P.S. GPS in and of itself doesn't use any data, though certain apps that use GPS may consume data themselves. For example. Google Navigation will use data to pull down maps, whereas Copilot uses maps on SD card and thus consumes no data.
yea it does suck especially since i'm planning on going back to japan for 5 weeks in July. Lol, wont be checking my e-mail half as much.
How do i know if there's an update to my rom? I use the phone to check if there are updates but it always says it's fine. Should i actually check online instead? I know with Winmob it never said there was an update even when there was. I'm kind of hoping android is a bit better for that.
I'll check which rom etc i'm using and see if there's an update.
Ive got a netcounter. However i use task killer a lot because i'm convinced it saves the battery a little. So if i use that, obivously it kills the net counter too.
I'm sure someone is about to say ''you're using android, you don't need a task killer'' however, when i see so many apps running in the background, regardless if people say ''but they're not using memory'', they do. If i kill them all, my phone goes quicker again. So yea it does work.

Most task killers have an option to exclude certain apps, so if you must insist on using one ( ), set it to ignore your net counter.

That just means your operator is not offering an update. You may wish to check out the battery history, it may give you some information about what is draining your battery.

Well, Android is designed to use all the RAM available, which is a good thing - speaking of software design. There is no reason to keep RAM free on a well designed operating system, because once RAM is required, an unused app is ditched in favour of the new one. As this takes virtually no time there is no need to use time and resources to clean up. In fact, task killers use system resources, resulting in battery usage.
Anyway, what you are seeing is bad design in applications, and that is real: Some apps are active, even though they should not be. Either because you do not want them to, or because they do not properly communicate that they will be running in the background, doing stuff all the time. Android adresses the issue by exposing details about battery usage to the user, thus forcing bad developers to choose the defaults for their apps more carefully.
Again, check out *#*#4636#*#* to identify software that is running all the time. Maybe it's something you do not need that is causing your phone to lag and drain the battery...
Can't you tell t-mobile to disable internet usage on your account when your in another country?
JAmes.
No offense but this isn't anything new data roaming bill have been in the news allot. You really should of known better.... also you should of picked up a pay as you go sum or rolling contract sum for the duration of your trip...

3 ftw ... pay them 15£ and all ur inclusive allowances work abroad
i know what you mean but...
I went on honeymoon to Italy for 10 days with my wife and my desire.
I am with Vodafone and was charged 5 pounds a day for data. They allow 25mbps for a fiver which I think is reasonable. However my.bill breakdown of data usage was shot to sh*t ...some days showed 24mb others 100+, all I was doing was this website, the BBC, and a beekeeper one. I complained, they checked the bill and gave me 35 quid back. Also another 30 off next months bill too.
Overall my 10 days cost me 50 quid.
Sam
This is why when abroad always always get a local sim card if you need calls to come in divert your number its soooo much cheaper.

sage words.
sounds like the OP has the desires full suite of syncing going on.
With my old HD I got lost in europe and fired up google maps, it was set to satellite mode and it cost me 5 quid just to find out where I was and that was about 30 seconds usage.
There is a 'data off' app out there. It just kills all data connections until further notice.
This thing is reallllyyy pissing me off. Before people say "are you happy now, see ya later, or the iPhone sucks"
Their are serious issues with the Android OS and the Battery is the main problem with the EVO.
Now if someone can give me a fix for this I would greatly appreciate it and continue to love using my phone again but untill then Every little thing is going wrong with this phone to make me want to switch.
Here it is:
I am NOT rooted! I have 4G turned off, WIFI, bluetooth, and GPS turned off, I also have the screen brightness set to automatic. I have no widgets on the home screen that require an internet connection, and have all syncing turned off, on everything! that includes contacts, facebook, mail (stock and gmail) weather, and news.
I even have "enable always-on mobile data" turned off.
I am currently using Launcher Pro, but was using ADW launcher before that and then stock 2.1 android (no sense turned on, on all of them)
My battery barely makes it 8 hours without being on low.
under the battery category, for the past week or so plus, I havent really checked into that, So i can't tell you when it started, as been on 100%
So my uptime and my awake time have been the same.
I have turned the phone on and off 5 times already, used a task killer, turned on airplane mode, and no dice.
The only definite fix, is going one by one and deleting an app, turning the phone on and off, and looking at battery usage, I have easily 25 apps and that will take forever. Or doing a hard reset, something I do not want to waste my time doing again, reconfiguring my phone, and reinstalling a bunch of apps and settings.
An example of todays usage, I am not exagerating any of this.
I unplugged it at 10:30 AM, 25 total text messages (going in an out) no phone calls, 4G was on and connected for a total of 2 Minutes.
Now I know if you leave 4G on and you are not connected it kills the battery, but I had it off, turned it on for 2 Minutes because I was in chicago, and wanted to see how fast it was ran 3 speed tests, and turned it off.
I refreshed my email 4 times, That means opening up the mail app, clicking menu and refresh, same thing with facebook, refreshed my news feed 5 times. and at 6:30
I have 2 out of the 5 bars left.
That is absolutely rediculous, I am past my 30 day return time.
An OS that allows certain apps to keep the phone on and make the battery life horrible is rediculous.
This is a list of all apps I have both from the market and off:
advanced task killer
AK notepad
akari
astro
better cut
betterkeyboard
dictionary.com (offical App)
facebook
find my phone
Flikie wallpaper
fox news
handcent sms
keeper
leet speak
live scores
memory trainer
news and weather (from nexus one, but refreshing is on manual)
pass phrase
pda net
picsay pro
qik
ringroid
shazam
speedtest
status notes
texas hold em
tip calculator
tv listings
urban dictionary
zedge
I have notice one thing tho with launcherpro, for some reason when I go into an app or hold down the home button to bring up the multitasking 6 app menu, and then click home after, the setting to come up that asks which home launcher I want
HTC sense or Launcherpro
comes up all the time, like 10 times a day, and I always click choose this action for default and click launcher pro and sure enough after opening a couple apps, and clicking home the box will come up, may be that has something to do with the battery I dont know tho.
If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate, and you would save an evo from being thrown into a wall.
thanks.
Try out CM6 and I guarantee you'll never even think about an iphone again.
Like he said above.. Root and get cm6.. I can go 2 days easy regular use..

can you post a link to which one you are talking about, because I looked up on android Development and it said the cyanmod or what ever it was was not very stable, so I don't know about that.
And if the iPhone is such a terrible phone, why should I have to root my phone and install a custom ROM in in order for it to work properly, IOS 4 does not have that.
The key is in data if your not using mobile data then use the widget to turn it off til you need it. Or root and flash a custom rom. They have better battery life hands down

Because i don't have to wrap my phone in Rubber or Duct Tape it for it to make a phone call or maintain a data connection. You were just asking to get flamed by posting this. If you wan't help from people around here, bashing Android and saying "IOS 4 has no problems!!!" isn't going to be your best option.
P.S. Stock Android 2.1 or even Sense UI crushes IOS 4. Maybe it's not the phone....maybe it's the user.
You didn't specifically say that you had Google talk signed out. Turn off auto sign in on that app and it makes a huge difference.

I didn't see anyone mention this, not that it's going to be your issue but it could be something to check.
I recall a friend having a severe battery issue and it turned out the stock calendar program was preventing his phone from hibernating and thus being on constantly.
Just something to try, I hope you find out what's up soon. Also not sure if you have a spare battery, but sometimes you can get a dud and the only way to test that is try another battery.
Seriously, if you think iOS4 is better than Android then that's the phone you need. You pretty much just wasted everyone's time with all that.
While I would agree that if you want to get dramatically improved battery life, your best bet is to root it and flash a custom rom, Even when my phone was stock it got much better battery life than yours seems to be getting. I actually ran my phone for for weeks stock, not rooted, so I would have a good baseline of experience when I did start to customize it.
Typically, my phone would last about 10-14 hours before needing to be recharged. That would be with slightly more usage than you indicate, and with data and gps always on, but 4g off, as I don't live in a 4g area.
Now that I am rooted, and am running Fresh 1.0.1 and the fps fix kernel, and a battery saver setcpu profile, the same use gives me more than 50% charge left after running 14-16 hours off the charger.
Personally, it sounds to me like you might have a defective battery. As one of the previous posters said, I would recommend you try the instructions in one of the battery life threads here and if that didn't work, I would take it to the Sprint repair center.

iphone isn't a terrible phone, it just doesn't compare to an EVO.
anything iphone can do, the evo can do - and do it better.
no need to be on wi-fi for a video chat!
Why would you buy a 4.3 inch screen....4g.... and expect awesome battery? Yes it could be better but come-on....if you didn't expect it to have bad battery life....?????????? That's all I can say I just don't understand...android phones normally have bad battery life on top of all that....

I'm having the same issues as you except that I am rooted. Have an underclocked phone and Baked Snack 9.7
I'm really beginning to think that the people that claim to get 14+ hours of battery life is just a bunch of bs. I do exactly what they do and i get no where near the 18 hours some users claim to get. And for the people bashing the iphone, its not a bad phone, and almost everyone that invests $200 in a phone get a case anyway. And no i'm not bashing the Evo either. Battery life just sucks on it.

No offense, but it seems like you kind of made up your mind already on what you want to do. Iphone 4 is a good phone, but honestly, it gets boring after about a week, if that. Android is so much fun. You don't have to root your phone for it to work properly. Do some research into why batteries drain really fast with this phone. You do realize how big the screen is right? lol. I''l give you ups and downs of both phones.
Iphone 4-
Good
Nice looking phone, OS is smooth, apps.
Bad
Got to watch where you hold it, AT&T (they don't have unlimited data plan), not very much to do with Iphone
Evo
Good
Big screen, Sprint, camera, don't have to be on wi-fi for video calling, fully customizable, even more so if you root it. There are more but tired of typing!
Bad
Battery
Thats just my opinion though. I would have more bad things to say about it if not for Cyanogen. Its like an overgrown Nexus now! Sorry for the long post. lol. If you have any questions on how to root or anything feel free to send me a message or whatever.

tell me what comes up 1st and 2nd.
I have a relatively new SG2 on T-Mo and just had a scary incident last week related to my data usage.
Firstly, understand that I've been an Android user for two years on Sprint and know from that experience that my data usage has always averaged 300-500MB/mo, i.e., I am not a heavy user. I've also been completely satisfied with my new SG2 (battery etc) as well as the T-Mo network.
Last Friday, however, my phone unexpectedly died in the late afternoon. I plugged it in and powered-up, then got a warning that I was about to exceed my 2GB data-plan. I was only 3 days into the current billing-cycle! I called T-Mo and they said, "We can see your data-usage running as we speak." I said that was ridiculous, there was nothing running on the phone and I had just restarted it. There was no visible sign of any app or activity on the phone. Eventually, though, I realized what was happening:
Earlier that same day I had tried to email myself a large attachment. (I'm only running my work email-account which is on Exchange.) The email never came through and I realized I had probably exceeded the maximum size allowed by my email server. Apparently the phone did not gracefully give-up the outbox message! Instead it went berserk and tried/failed repeatedly to send the email, killing both my battery and my 2GB data-allotment in just a few hours.
T-Mo tech support had the good suggestion to remove (then re-add) my work email account, and that fixed the problem.
Conclusion: there's a bug in the Samsung Mail app where it does not recognize/accept an 'undeliverable' response from email servers, at least not the 'too big' response from Exchange servers.
___________
New issue:
So now I was paranoid and installed a data-usage widget to monitor my connection. In the next week my phone averaged ~45MB/day?! This was still insane, since I knew from experience I typically used 10MB/day. I called T-Mo to complain that one of their apps must be wasting my data-plan and they played dumb. They also said they had 'no control' over the crapware they'd force-installed on the phone. I not-so-politely told the rep that was a load of crap and asked that she record a note on my account that I was concerned my data-plan was being 'wasted' by their apps, in case I called-back later to dispute my charges.
Now, from reviewing this forum, I see lots of complaints about the T-Mo 'My Account' app. Is that known to waste data-usage?
P.S. I'm currently running an experiment wherein I uninstalled the Google+ app. This was the one new app I'm running (relative to the previous 2 years' experience). So far the problem seems to be fixed? I'm surprised, though, that Google+ would use that much data as I'm only linked to a handful of people (immediate family) and none of us are posting anything.
no...the my account app does not waste my data...i have had this phone for a week and a half and also used the app on my samsung vibrant...have never had any weird data usage cycles...my billing cycle just ended on the 14th...my data counting widget shows 27.5MB used...its 5:30 eastern...so over a day and a half and only at 27.5mb...nothing even remotely close to your 50MB/day
Hello
I have a AT&T Note2 that I got late November. Battery Performance was fabulous. I just recently got the update to 4.1.2 OTA and there was some sort of upgrade or maintenance just prior to the 4.1.2 update.
I immediately noticed a difference in battery performance. It was substantially less than what I had on 4.1.1. I cant get any straight answers from Samsung or AT&T, there is no comprehensive log for the update so its hard to figure out whats going on.
Same software load as on 4.1.1. I did notice that after the update to 4.1.2 there were substantially more items in manage apps> running than what was in 4.1.1.
Samsung claims the root cause is the update to the OS and a change to the wifi radio and software.
Does anyone know what really is going on. At&T is a lost cause and no help whatsoever.
Thank you
I will be interested what you find out as I am experienceing the same issue. I went from 95% to 65% overnight doing nothing (WiFi on). Earlier today I was losing about 2-3% battery every 15 minutes doing nothing and did some research. All I could find out was to turn off all location services and since I don't get Wifi at work, turn off WiFi while here. This helped some, but still would like to find out what is going on. My iphone was a battery hog in the end of its life and my new GN2 lasts barely as long as my 2 year old iphone did. Not a happy camper right now.

Hi, I'm hopeful one of the Senior Members or Mod's will run down a answer as well as a comprehensive change add-delete and enhancement log regarding the 4.1.2 update. All I can say is I have not added anything my daily use is the same..no games. I disabled all the att bloat wae other than hot spots. I sort of paid attention to my running apps in 4.1.1, and now in 4.1.2 there are many more things theree that wernt prior to this update. I didnt have to disable anything prior to this update.
The answer is not in disabling bloat apps. The answer is in the log that shows what was done with the update.
I hope someone can get that because it holds the key to the answers we are looking for.
Who knows maybe one of the developers will read this thread and be able to help.
try a battery pull and obviously reboot. Download the Gsam battery monitor from the market. I think it is free. It dumbs down a lot of stuff and pretty much tells you what is taking up your battery. It does a much better job than the stock battery checker. After an hour or so, the longer the better, it will show you some apps or processes that are the culprit.
Battery stats app is a paid app in the market but I think it is free on this xda site somewhere for members. That appears to be a very comprehensive battery monitoring apps with wakelocks and it gets very complicated for a novice such as myself.
can you provide additional details on your situation, for example:
what's your baseline comparison, e.g., before: 18 hrs use with 4 hours screen time, after 13 hours use 4 hours screen time
are you rooted (i suspect not)?
have you gone into Settings->Battery to see which apps, etc., are using your battery?
do you have a lot of music, pictures, etc on your phone?
not an answer to your question, but... have you considered performing a hard reset on your device and then testing battery life with at clean slate?
looking at your battery stats is a better indicator of what could be causing poor battery life. i'm on the same release as you and my battery life has been the same if not better. also download better battery stats to see if you have wake-lock issues. i'm averaging 16-20 hours per charge with 6-9 hours screen time, about 150 emails daily and 35-90 minutes in phone calls.
So yesterday at 19 hours of use (maybe 2 hours total of emails, web surfing, and using a couple apps, music for an hour at the gym) I still had 32% left. Not bad. However, my wifi was off all day, even at home, and I kept my location services turned off. So tomorrow I am going to test it with Wifi on at home and my location services and see what happens. The Gsam battery app i used yesterday was pretty cool although at first I wasn't sure because it said that the app was using 15%. But as the day progressed it never went over 4%. Still new to the android platform, but learning.

I APPRECIATE the response however I would like to know what was done with the 4.1.2 upgrade, what changed, enhanced or whatever as well as the AT&T maint just prior to the 4.1.2 upgrade. Nothing was disabled, I was runn8ng the same exact software load, same apps, no games, and wifi wS constantly on. While disabling bloatware, shutting down this and that, turning off wifi at this point is helpful, its not a acceptable answer as to what happened.
This forum has some of the most respected developers and computer genius's around. Whenever you ask for something and everyone else comes up empty, the first thing you hear is go to XDA.
My Galaxy Note2 had the most incredible battery time of any device I've ever owned prior to the updates. Im also pissed because I didnt even know that the red and grey arrows and the connecting to dnr server was AT&T doing a update. There was no forewarning.
The Note2 is still fabulous to me, I just want to understand what has happened and why. I am not asking for a say in what they did, certainly this is my phone, I believe that I should be entitled at least to know what transpired.
There should be no problem producing a comprehensive change log with a lay person level explanation.
I was getting 2 days off charger with 8 hours of screen time and suddenly the battery doesn't seem to charge past 50% and I didn't do a single thing to it but tonight I am cleaning everything out and starting fresh because something odd is going on

I think the key to many answers is 2 items.....a log and explanation of what occurred in simple terms regarding the 2 updates. There was a no warning automatic att update done just prior to and then the actual 4.1.2 update itself. My gut opinion is something was changed with wifi and how its handled along with some other software changes.
I feel like. Dog chasing my own tail...disable this, disable that...bull...nothing was disabled and wifi was always on prior the updates.
Hello all!
Have had a Galaxy S8 for 9 months, then got a cracking deal on a refurbished S9 last week so have been using it for a week now. It is in Grade A condition!
First couple of days, battery life fantastic, now I have set up all my apps. SAME AS MY S8! I am a great believe in charging my phone correctly (I work in the Repair industry), so I charge my phone in the evening and then take it off before I go to bed at 2am. By 4pm the following day (I sleep until 9am) the phone is on approx 10% and at most it might have been used for a maximum screen on time of 2 hours approx. Very disappointing. I have recently paid for accubattery to try and keep an eye on what is happening, and tonight I decided to try something. I went into developer mode and turned off mobile data whilst on WiFi and my “current battery use” reported by accubattery when doing nothing has gone from -1000ma down to around -50ma... much more respectable! Maybe this setting will help more people!
I've tried that but I know some people that seem to only send group texts and of course group messages only come via mms. I actually know one person with an IPhone and all his txts by default go by mms instead of sms and I've given up trying to get him to fix it. The best thing I've ever found was a SMS app that would enable data for MMS and then disable it afterwards. I believe the only way you could do that now is by being rooted.
I only ever use WhatsApp and other social media apps and very rarely send text messages so for me this isn’t particularly a major issue.
I am going to monitor tomorrow as to how much this effects my battery life. Maybe now is the time to invite your mates to WhatsApp ...modernise a little
I don't sit around wifi all day and it would be pretty damn stupid ditching the odd mms for Whatsapp all day long. Modernize all you like but they both take data, besides no one I know has any use for Whatsapp, been there done that.
MMS isn't included in your contract allowance in the UK, at least none of the contracts I've ever had, they cost 30-50p each so apps like WhatsApp are a necessary evil
I detest anything facebook related but its the best messaging app available and no-one else uses any others, so if I want to share media with people that's the only choice
will try this on my device. thanks
