Can someone help me with videos. The screen of the HTC desire is 480 x 800 so why will files that are only upto 640 x 480 work? Any files that are bigger than this in resolution only play sound.
The type of file is MP4, i.e. android supported video files. I have 2 seasons of family guy that I had on my iPhone at 640 x 480 and all work fine. I also have video files at 480 x 352 and all work fine BUT when I put on some files over 640, i.e 800 x 480 only the sound plays. I have even tried 'random sizing' i.e 680 and 642 and they wont show video just play sound. The device is limited to 640 it appears, why?
I know these files at 640 will play at fullscreen but thats not the point. Any video I have upto 800 should play fine otherwise I have to convert these down to 640 to play on an 800 screen which surely means I'm not getting the best out what whats available?
what I found is that when i used h.264 video codec i also only got sound, but when i changed to mpeg-4 codec videoes at 800x480 played just fine. I used Handbrake to encode.
Sorry to be hijacking the thread, but my question may be somewhat related if you could help me out
I don't actually have the phone yet, but is there a program that would play back (smoothly) normal DIVX/XVID encoded (*.avi) files on the phone? That is, without the need to bother with handbrake or anything on the PC beforehand.

It's not related at all, and there are plenty of other threads discussing DIVX playback; please try using the search feature.

the native player doesn't play avi vids but you can try yxflash player
from HTC: "HTC Desire to receive DivX playback support in future update"
you can also use doubletwist program for your pc... it will sinc mp3s and videos (it automatically converts videos while copying to your device)
hope this helps

Hi all,
been having trouble viewing video on my touch HD. initially had tried viewing them in WMP but they wouldn’t play most of the videos (avi’s + Mpgs) .
installed MP4forHD v2.5 and converted the videos, at this point they then caused phone to crash when opening the video's in WMP.
Then installed core player and this will play the converted MP4's, well to an extent, it plays the audio but no picture.
Any thoughts, or ideas of other applications to try?
Cheers in advance
htc album may help
thanks for that. also just downloaded HTC touch HD video convertor too.
Sorry all, should have read all the stickies first.

To play in CorePlayer, encode AVC MP4 and size to 320 X 240, 500 kbps to 700 kbps
To play in WMP or HTC player, encode AVC MP4 800 x 400 size, 500 kbps to 700 kbps
im about to buy core player and a new 8 gig micro card
i want to convert some of my SD and HD movies to use while on holiday
movies are in TS. or vob format at the mo
which is the best way to convert them to play using core player
thanks for any advice
i have tried encoder but the audio is always out of synce
thanks for any help
Try DVDFab
dvdfab is for copying my dvds what i want to do is convert film files i have on my pc into smaller files such as divx or mpeg 4 to play via core player
is there a universal tool to do this
edit found the mobile convertor in it but very limited no options to change res or audio and doesnt seem to work i click next and nothing as though it doesnt see the file types
i was playing with mediacoder last night, seemed to do the job for me. lots of settings as with any codec conversion process and u'll need to experiment to find the best codec/bitrate/resolution combination for you and ur media.
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
just got core player
with WMP it plays my mpeg 4 conversion of monster inc no probs
with core player its very stuttery
file details are
Mpeg4
video avc aka h264
codec coreavc
video size
800 x 448
frame rate 25.00
i suppose what im looking for is to be able to convert the file to a format and res that core play will play smoothly
thanks for any advice

cant get this to run
keep getting msvcr71.dll was not found
download the eg fixer to cure it and says it cant be run on a 64 bit system
any help would be great
thanks
Didn't have a problem with it myself with vista x64.
I already had the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library installed and just used the 32bit version of mediacoder and didn't bother with the 64bit addons. Not having experianced the problem you have, I'm not really in a position to offer much more help than that. Sorry
If you keep having trouble with mediacoder, you could try SUPER. I used to use it, but found its UI a bit of a mess.

I use Visualhub on OSX. It will specifically do H.264 MP4 videos made for iPhone and iPod Touch but you can also specifically set the resolution and the bitrate so you can specifically set for the TP2 screen. I get faster and higher quality video at the iPhone resolution especially since high bitrates choke on the TP2. Couple that with Coreplayer and it's a done deal.

Have you picked your source at the top of the screen?
but DVDFab is a shareware so here's a freeware for you
http://www.winnydows.com/page.php?2
more tools through google
With core player go menu/tools/preferences/select page/video
And put video out onto qtv display. Put video quality on high. Smooth zoom on.
Then try your mp4.
I find it best to convert videos to 320 x 194 or 320 x 176
The best video quality I have downloaded. (Trailers) .m4v but I can’t find any program that converts to that format
I've used Total Video Converter which has plenty of options and seems to work fine for me.

Visual hub (http://www.techspansion.com/) has been discontinued (sadly enough), but I use it as well. If you can get a copy somewhere, its really useful and piss easy to use. As an alternative i can also recommend Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Its not as easy to use as Visual Hub, but it also produces great results which work very well with Core Player.
can tp2 playback hd video?
atleast 720p resolution???
it wud b great
since tp2 has dedicated graphics chip
and may be if we can overclock it!!
it wud be really nice to show off to frends its capability
plz reply i will b getting it after few days
thanks so much in advance
I think it's safe to say that it's impossible to play anything at 720p since our device's screen resolution is "only" 800x480 (720p=1280x720). That being said, video at or above our device's native screen res looks absolutely gorgeous (much better than the iphone's 480x320). You'll need to invest in Coreplayer if you want to watch anything though since the built-in player is very limited in the formats it supports.
Check out the last part of this video for some more info on video playback of the TP2.
yes bro i had seen tat review before
it states max 720*480 i guess
neways its still cool though my old UNIversal did tat too very well
was expecting a bit more
neways thanks for the reply
In theory, if a device were powerful enough, it could play back a 720p video and downscale it to the resolution of the TP2 screen on the fly. However, the TP2 doesn't even come close to having that kind of power. (The HD2 might).
CorePlayer will play a much wider range of video formats than the inbuilt video apps, but it's not free (costs $30) and, annoyingly, it's unable to make use of GPU-acceleration on the TP2. The same applies to all video player apps except the built-in ones - they run on the CPU only. This means you are rather restricted in terms of resolutions and bit-rates.
If you want something that will play a wide range of video formats and which doesn't cost any money, try TCPMP - you'll need the version from this post. When installed, choose DirectDraw as your video rendering method, then go into the DirectDraw settings page and tick the box that says "use blitting instead of overlays". TCPMP is significantly slower even than Coreplayer, but it does at least support AC3 audio, which Coreplayer doesn't, and, as I said, it's free.
However, for the best playback quality you should convert your videos into .MP4 format (on your desktop PC) and then play them on your TP2 using HTCAlbum. This is fully hardware-accelerated and can easily handle 800x480 mp4 videos (i.e. the TP2's full screen resolution) with a respectable bit-rate (e.g. 750kb/s). If you go to this thread or this one you will find two different desktop PC applications that are designed to convert videos into the optimum format for playback on a TP2 or Touch HD. The conversion can take quite a while, depending on the speed of your PC, but the results are very good, especially for HD source material.
There is no point in running 720P video on a 3.6", 480 x 800 screen. Properly encoded XVIDs look and run great on the screen and take up a fraction of the space on the memory card.

There is every point: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4891185&postcount=168
And what were you planning on playing an 800x480 xvid with on the TP2? You certainly can't use Coreplayer or TCPMP.

On a practical level, it's easier for me to batch transcode multiple 720p sources while I'm at work and then load, say, multiple 130MB and 400MB files onto an 8GB memory card that stuffed with mp3's and other videos than to copy just a couple of 2GB-4GB HD movies. I can understand your point about the practicality of having one file to deal with, but that's impractical on other levels simply due to file size.
The OP was referring to watching 720p videos on the TP2 in HD resolutions because the horizontal resolution is 800. It was pointed out that it doesn't work like that.
I've watched 624 X 352 xvid encoded avi's from HD sources and they aren't any less sharp than 800 X 480 transcoded mp4 files.
Some digital cameras like Sony TX1, etc already capture video in 1280x720p mp4 format. So it would be great if TP2 can play these smoothly. That would eliminate the need to re-encode videos that is very time consuming. And I can keep the same file for playback on both the phone as well as on computer and TV. At present, the hardware seems not powerful enough for TP2 to play these without dropping frames. When phones that come with with Nvida ION chips arrive, that would solve the problem. Adobe and NVidia have demonstrated how their chipset can play back full 1280x720p Flash video (H.264) at 30fps.

yeah i agree but its not about space
i mean a small music video which i wud like to share with everyone, etc
Samsung Omnia HD plays back these videos easily though it has a 800mhz proccy and a more powerful graphics chip but still i was eager if its possible!!
it wud surely help to carry some small HD video files than whole movies

Thank you.
My Tilt 2 has trouble playing divx at 624X352 at full screen. My old Tilt can play the same 624X352 divx with no trouble at full screen. Both phones are using the same coreplayer with same settings. It looks like the Tilt 2 has trouble scaling 624X352 to full screen. The video looks pretty smooth on the tilt 2 if I play it portrait. Once I maximize the video to landscape full screen, the video stutters. I lighly doubt that Tilt 2 will able to play anything high def smoothly. I've also tested the same video on my friends BlackjackII. Her phones plays the same video smoothly at full screen. In case anyone wants to know Tilt 2 has 528mhz process while Tilt has 400mhz and BJII has 260mhz.
i searched google and to my astonishment, this TP2 still doesnt have the graphics acceleration?????!!!!!!!!!

That's not surprising, since the Tilt's 640 x 480 screen necessitated letterboxing, so it didn't have to scale the video up. With a 800 x 480 screen, the video has to be upscaled on the fly.
That said, I can play the same xvid files you're talking about smoothly albiet with a dropped frame here and there (sound is perfect). This is with Coreplayer on my Sprint TP2. I have around 120MB of free storage memory -- I know that low storage memory can affect performance.
Why can't HTC just install 1GB of internal storage memory for all of their phones already? At least I have way more storage memory on the TP2 than the Diamond, but then again, I've only had the TP2 for 10 days.

WHEN DID THE TILT/KAISER GET 680*480 screen???
its the plain ugly 320*240 screen
You're correct, I was thinking the tilt was the touch pro since the tilt 2 is the touch pro 2. The tilt is the mogul.
Before I start, let me clarify that this is about playback of stored videos files (avi, mp4, wmv, mov, etc), not recording frame rate or the playback of recorded videos from the phone. Searching yielded hundreds of results, but none of them fit the scope of my question as far as I could tell. If there is something out there, please link and excuse this question.
So, my question and issue is pretty straight forward: whenever I try to play video files I have (IE: downloaded mp4 files), I get really really poor frame rates. Poor meaning 7-13 frames per second.
So the video sucks, and plays in a fairly smooth slow motion. The sound is fine, causing the video to go out of sync, and once the audio timeline ends the video file closes. The built-in player won't even load them, but RockPlayer does. I think I tried xyplayer as well. I figure this is just a codec / software issue, but all lower resolution video files (same format) play fine, so it seems to be unrelated to the applications I'm using. 800x640 video files, no problem; 1280x720 video files, not gonna happen. The videos play fine on a computer, obviously, and my buddy's Windows Phone 7 plays them fine as well (Zune software).
Any ideas?
what bitrate are the videos that skip?
I don't have many on my phone right now, but one of them is 741Kbps, about one third larger than another video that plays perfectly fine, albeit at a lower resolution. Admittedly I know very little about video encoding and all of that.
What rom are you using?
Currently Burnt Droid (1.4), but I've had the same problem on other roms (sense). I recall having this issue on an AOSP rom once, but I can't say that with complete confidence.
Bump; is this really not an issue for people? I can try and grab a sample video if that helps? I figured this would be a more global thing, not just me. The main reason I need (or want) this to work is because all of my online class lectures are recorded in this format and being able to watch the lectures on the go would be extremely beneficial.
I can play a 4gb hd rip of avatar on my phone in rockplayer (hardware mode) with no skipping

Hmm, ok, so it took that sentence for me to realize I'm an idiot. I've tried hardware mode with every video file I have put on my phone (avi, mp4, wmv), but wasn't surprised when they didn't play-- if they did, couldn't I just use the stock video player?-- but my school files for example are .mp4, which should play, but I guess the system player doesn't support whatever encoding/bitrate these videos are made with? Does this mean I won't get this to work unless I re-encode / convert the files I have into a new mp4 the phone will support natively?
Excuse my ignorance on the issue; I guess my understanding of the application and android system is more limited than I initially thought.
Hi guys,
I'm not sure, but I think this is my first post in here after a long time registered... But anyway, I tried to convert some 1080p24 music videos (not from YouTube, but instead some masters (per say) from Vimeo "Original file" download option) to 720p60 using AviSynth and SmoothVideo Project (SVP) for frame interpolation. In addition, I also tried to deinterlace some 1080i TV footage to 1080p60 and convert them to 720p60. I encoded both videos using MainConcept Reference with 6000 kbps of H264 video bitrate and 192 kbps of AAC audio bitrate. Both videos play smoothly on my PC at 720p and 59.94 fps, but on my Xperia S phone they're kinda jerky. Well, not exactly jerky, but they look like they're not over 30 fps. So, finally, my question: what is exactly the problem? Is the 720p60 video too heavy on frame-rate? Or is the phone screen's refresh rate below 60 Hz? Or maybe the encoding settings are too complex? (I used the slowest preset on MainConcept Reference) So far, I've ruled out two things:
1. Resolution: I can play 1080p Apple trailers in 16:9 format smoothly (although they're obviously in 720p because of the phone's screen resolution).
2. Bitrate: The problem is definitely not the bitrate because the Apple trailer for Avengers in 1080p is somewhere around 9000 kbps.
P.S.: I'm using Android 4.1.2 JellyBean 6.2.B.0.211 stock ROM. I've had some issues with video playback on older Jelly Bean releases (6.2.B.0.200), but they seem to be gone in this version. Using MX Player, latest version.

Nothing is too heavy for SONY XPERIA S. Like others in here you are trying to much to push the limits of your phone with all kinds of weird tweaks. Well, by doing so, here you are, posting a question about a phone that works fine, if you know how to use it.

Err... ok, but if you're saying that "nothing is too heavy" for it, then there shouldn't be any limits to push, right? I know this phone has some limitations (like all the phones do), I just want to know what exactly is limiting it. I don't understand what is so wrong about trying to use all the capabilities of the phone. If the phone has a 720p screen, why shouldn't I be putting HD videos in it? I wouldn't spend so much on it if I'm not planning to use it. If it's just to listen to music and take 12 MP pictures, I would buy a much cheaper phone and a camera.
You are pushing non-compatible and Science-Fiction apps and mods, that's why.

You should try putting in the raw video files instead of the converted ones. I have 5 Full HD videos on my phone and there hasn't been any issues.
there is also limitation is phone software.....try to read default capability file in phone storage.. everything written in it may also be a reason....

Sorry for the ignorance, but where is this file?
Oh, and I've already tried to play the original 1080p files, but they're like 30 or 40 Mbps, so it starts to lag. The 6 Mbps master for Eminem's "No Love" plays fine in 1080p, though.
have you tried playing 1080p movies from yiffy-torrents?maybe you can check the data on the file and see something that might help you
