Is the HTC Desire Right For Me? - Desire General

Hey everyone, brought an iPhone 3G about 6 months ago off ebay thinking it was an amazing phone and in some respects it is, but the horrible internal specs have got to me and now reaching the end of my contract I am looking at the HTC Desire.
I have read that battery life can be bad but I am use to that with my 3G, not even a full charge can last me a full day where I am no where near a point i can charge my phone and when I am round friends I charge it overnight, so am use to the bad battery life, but is it better or worse than the 3G's
My biggest concern is also slow down, on paper the Desire should not face much slow down due to the high processor speed and high amounts of RAM but has anybody faced slow downs with the device and if so when and where e.g running 2,000 apps simultaneously or having the device on for days on end.
This last question may not be answerable but I'll give it a go. Mobile devices have lasted about 12 months maximum, due to my current financial problems I am looking at the T-Mobile £15 P/M contract which suits me perfectly but am not sure whether to go 18 or 24 month, is there anybody like me that cannot hold onto 1 phone longer than 12 months and how do you feel with the Desire, I know bigger and better phones will come out, but do you feel like you could last 2 years with this device?
Thanks in advance

2 Years this phone will still be top-range. Phone hardware is getting to that point where the hardware isnt the deciding factor no more, the speed of the 1Ghz snapdragon can already do 90% of the things you ever wanted to do with your phone, HD recording...HD Playback, quick smooth transitions (what am i missing?), with a good enough battery life. the speed of the 1ghz snapdragon is VERY fast so much that the new snapdragon that is proposed to be released 1.3Ghz single core and 1.5Ghz Dual Core (most likely a netbook CPU) just seem like overkill for phone uses.
So if in 12 months time HTC release ... HTC Unbelievable with a 3.8inch AMOLED Screen and 500mb RAM/ROM with a 1.3Ghz Snapdragon......I will feel no envy
And as you know, if its software thats the deciding factor...then seeing as you know about xda-devs.com your almost certainly gonna be on the latest updates. Heck i had my G1 since launch and it never felt a day old next to the Hero...I even had friends a HTC Hero looking at my G1 with a HTC Legend Rom..lol
Note: I will never get a 2 year contract personally tho lol

The Desire's battery life will be more superior compared to the iphone 3GS, the Desire uses a 1400 mAH battery capacity, while the 3GS only has a 1219 mAH battery. Another advantage that the Desire has it that you can buy another battery and replace it.

One thing you need to note, which is the same as all unrooted android phones, is that currently you can't store apps on the memory card. It's something google apparently are looking to address. This is something that could potentially slow down your device. The Desire can also perform multi-tasking, something that the 3GS cannot do, but its in the pipeline for the new iphone 4G.

Hard to say at the moment until it can be rooted to unlock its full potential. Once it is rooted, many enhancements can be made and many of its current problems will hopefully be resolved.
Taken from another thread:
"Paul Apr 4 2010, 22:21
A quick update - I will have extremely limited Internet access for the next 2 weeks, so there won't be any further progress from me on rooting the Desire until I am fully back online on the 20th April.
The current Desire root status is that I DO have root access in a method that I believe can be replicated on other devices (I have a retail T-Mo device and i've had no issues), however HTC have implemented some rather sneaky protection methods that prevent writing of data to key partitions (boot, recovery, system etc.) which prevent us from enabling custom ROMs etc.
Aside from hoping an engineering SPL (and a way to flash it!) emerges, I do have a number of approaches I plan to try that I hope will unlock the last piece of the Desire puzzle, so don't give up hope just yet... progress IS being made.

Thinking about buying the Droid Incredible, help w/advice & questions

I am currently a Motorola Razr user (yes, I am way behind the times!), and it finally is time to get a smartphone. I don't want to get the iPhone because I can't stand Apple, and I think I've narrowed my search down to the Droid Incredible (I think the Droid X is a bit large).
However, I have a few questions I hope can get answered, and I need some advice:
1) Battery life- I have heard mixed things about the Inc's battery life. Most say it is not good, and some say it is just fine. If I am planning on rooting and loading a custom ROM, how would you rate the battery life? Compared to the Droid X and the iPhone 4? How long does a single charge last?
2) LED light - I know the video mode does not turn on the LED light for constant light, but I read somewhere that the Inc will get an update that will get LED constant video light - is this true? I know 720p was recently added.
3) I just checked out the phone at my local Verizon store, and when scrolling through menus/etc it tends to lag sometimes. Can this be fixed if I root and load a custom ROM?
4) I am also thinking about waiting for the Samsung Fascinate to come out, but that could be a while, and I need a phone pretty soon (in the next week or two). If the Droid Inc. is very close to the Fascinate in features (which I think it is except for the Super AMOLED 4-inch screen), would it be wise to wait for the Samsung, or should I bite the bullet and get the Droid Inc. now?
Any help would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance.
1. Battery sucks. Only 4hours of moderate use.
2. I never use the led light, so I can't help there
3. Roms and kernels fix all lag. Try cm6 or skyraider with Hydra v.08 icicles or ocov (whichever is stable). That will fix lag.
4. Super amoled vs amoled- you can see super amoled in the sun, and it is difficult with regular.

Wow u sure know a lot without having the phone. I've had the Droid incredible now for around 3 months, I used to have the iPhone then a LG dare then the Droid Eris. I can honestly say the Incredible is the best of all the phones ever.
1) battery life- battery life for Me lasted 22 hours but this depends entirely upon how you use your phone. I had maybe a half hour of music a day, 20-40 texts and maybe a half hour of all the other stuff. Now I am rooted and running a rom(cyanogenmod test 7) on my incredible and I can get possibly a few extra hours of batt.
2) Led Light - in order to use the LED light while video recording, I believe their should be an ota update comming out as earley as friday that will fix this problem and add many more features.
3) Performance - when it comes to the speed and performance of the device, that depends on what is taking up the CPU, the more apps you have running, if you download task manager to kill the apps to stop them from running, the CPU will have more ram to coordinate itself. As it stands, the phone you saw in the store probably had its ram( CPU) taken up by all the running apps. An overclocked kernel for use with a rom can also solve this problem.
4) give or take- I highly reccomend the Incredible to anyone on Verizon's network. I too found the Droid x was very large and wouldent fit my lifestyle. As for the Samsung Facinate. The incredible and facinate are very close performance wise. If I was in your position I might consider the facinate just because its newer, but I highly reccomend the incredible because its just amazing.

Avazee,
I recently got an Incredible, coming from Windows Mobile. I've been using WinMo for about 3 years now and got tired of it, mostly due to AT&Ts crappy network. Was waiting for them to get their network improved and possibly get better phones but iPhone wasn't my choice either.
Here are some of my objective (hopefully) experience so far -- keep in mind I only have it for 5 days now.
1) Size: the device is the right size for me. I tried the EVO and while it's has a really nice screen, it's too big for my needs. The Incredible I get the same hardware with a smaller size factor.
2) Battery: this was a major concern of mine when getting this phone. However, so far I haven't noticed bad battery life on it. I used it for about 2-3 hours non stop (playing games, checking emails). For the rest of the day I had only Mobile Data enable and everything else disabled (GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth). I also installed "Advanced Task Killer" which is configured to kill tasks every 30 mins. This a great program and works well so far. I have purchased the upgraded battery (1750 mAh) which does not require a back cover change. Still waiting to get it. For the usage I did today, I had about 40% battery left.
3) Customization: The same day I got the phone, I was able to root the device and load custom ROMs. While I'm familiar with the ROM process on WinMo, I think the Android is much easier to work with. There are some good guides on the forums and UnRevoked makes it very easy to root the phone. After flashing a few ROMs, I ended up flashing back the Verizon ROM and using ADB to remove a few package. Works fine for me. Don't get any lags or notice any performance issue with HTC Sense. You can always replace HTC Sense with LauncherPro or some other launcher. LauncherPro has a lot of customization.
4) Screen: AMOLED ver Super AMOLED, I don't think there's much difference, at least from what I've read and seen in videos. Haven't seen the Super AMOLED in person to compare. What I can tell you about the Incredible, is that I have no issue with the screen so far. I have it set to auto adjust the brightness which seems to work well.
Using it for only 4 days, I think it's a great phone and customization seems to be endless, or at least can keep you VERY busy.
Verizon should have a 30 day return policy so order it, try it out and see how it works for you. If you don't like it, return it and wait for the Samsung or some other ones coming up... you will not be short of options. lol.
Hope that was somewhat helpful. If you need any specific info, PM me.

Wow, thanks for all the responses, I greatly appreciate it!
ecltech, thanks for the info. I just checked Verizon's return policy, and they state that there is a $35 restocking fee for all returns. Is that true?
Also, which upgraded battery did you get, that doesn't add any bulk/size?
I just wish someone knew when the Samsung Fascinate is coming out... if it were 2-4 weeks away, I'd probably just wait until that comes out.
Thanks again for the help.

The battery I purchased is from www.seidioonline.net. I've used their products in the past for a previous WinMo phone and it works well. The battery is a slim battery while adding additional capacity so it does not add any bulk to the phone.
Yes, Verizon's return policy has a $35.00 restocking fee. I look at it as a small price to pay for using the phone for 30 days and then returning it.
Try both and see what best fits your needs. In the end it's what works best for you that matters.
Good luck!
Yeah, unfortunately, still no word on the Fascinate/Galaxy S for VZW. But if you need a phone now, you'll be happy with the Incredible.

1) battery life. Coming from a non smart phone (I had a ENV Touch) the battery life simply does not compare. That battery would last for days with moderate use, and over a week with light use. But that's one of the trade-offs with any smart phone. I charge nightly now, but haven't had any issues with the stock battery draining during a day of moderate use. Compared to my BB curve (which I still have, stupid work exchange server policies) battery life is similar when it comes to periods when the phone is heavily used, but it does seem to drain faster on standby. Overall, battery is bearable in my opinion.
2) dunno.
3) I don't notice any lag on mine. It's always been very responsive in my experience with the stock setup. Anyplace in particular?
4) The Galaxy S is the only one of the 4" screen models I've seen yet which I'd consider over the Incredible. It's still a bigger phone, and I really like the size of the incredible. The screen should be better in sunlight, and looks to have a little better color in the videos I've seen, and it also should be much better in terms of 3D processing. If it was out today, I'd definitely consider trading in my incredible for one. But it's not, and who knows when it will be released.
Overall I've been really happy with my incredible, and don't think you can go wrong with the phone. If you can hold off, the Fascinate looks like a great phone as well, but two months later, yet another phone which is better yet will be released. The incredible is proven to be a very solid phone, samsung has had some hits and misses in the past.
Cool - I am really thinking about getting the Inc., instead of waiting for the Fascinate to come out. A few more questions in the meantime:
1) Out of curiosity, is it possible to purchase a European Galaxy S and have it work on AT&T here in the US?
2) If I buy the Inc., root it and load a custom ROM, will I still receive OTA updates for FroYo and the other patch that adds the Video light?
Thanks again for everyone's help.
I've had the phone since launch... not sure how long its been now....
1) Battery life is pretty decent for a smartphone. I have the Seidio 1750mAh battery and I get 19-20 hours everyday with 30-40% left. I leave home at 5AM and I don't plug in until I go to sleep, usually around 12. I however wouldn't recommend the seidio battery as its more expensive than the TP2 battery and you get the same capacity. Take a look at Batteryboss.org. I own 3 of these Seidio batteries and if you take the plastic cover off, you can see they are all 1500-1590mAh cells. I use Gtalk all day, not much SMS, around 20 Gmails and 10-15 exchange emails a day with realtime syncing, and about an hour of talk per day. I use automatic task killer as well.
2) The 2.2 Froyo ROMs have the light on for the camcorder. Check here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738634
3) The lags through the menus are most likely because of everyone playing with the phone, opening all the apps, webpages, etc and never killing any tasks or rebooting. This is a "smartphone/computer" and closing programs is necessary. I have had lag in the menus usually when the phone is syncing or installing an app etc, very few though. Also the froyo with 2.6.32 gives you more available RAM and its faster, haven't had any menu lag yet!
4) The hummingbird SoC is definitely an improvement of Snapdragon, same cpu (very close) just better gpu and other small changes. The superAmoled display is mainly brighter in the fascinate, makes reading the display in sunlight easier.
Incredible Vs Fascinate? Its really a look and feel preference I'd say... You really need to touch the device and use it in person to make an informed decision. For me, the incredible is very thin and light and fits in my pocket with no case, just a zagg shield and I barely notice its there, thats why I chose it. If you need a phone very soon get the incredible from BestBuy and pricematch wirefly or amazon. They have a 30 day return policy (no restocking fee) and you can exchange it if you decide on the Fascinate.
PS. I think the incredible is still back ordered. Everyone I've seen has a 5-10 days delay... Might be worth just waiting a couple weeks to decide
I just bit the bullet and just purchased a the Droid Incredible. I'm excited - hopefully it will arrive next week.
As another stupid (I apologize in advance) question - where do start when it comes to rooting/loading the best ROM? Is there a quick link/blog post/guide that shows me?
Many thanks again for all the help so far.

STOP READING MY MIND!!!!!!
seriously though, this post is exactly what i've been going through the last two weeks...
i couldn't decide whether to wait for the elusive Fascinate or go for the Inc or the X. throw in the rumors that tiered data is coming soon too... i've been so anxious lately.
i couldn't take it anymore so i ordered the Inc. the X is way too big for my hands to use one handed comfortably.
Sense is way better than Ninjablur. Samsung's UI stinks. The Inc has higher pixel density and a better processor imo.
i'm only worried about the crappy audio codec and slow framerates during HD recording. Man, the sound is horrible.
i sure wish i could get a solid release date on the fascinate. graphics chip is sick. BUT, i don't wanna wait too long and lose the opportunity to get unlimited data.

I'd say don't buy one. It's a great phone.. Best one I ever had in my opinion. If your a newb, looking for help ,without getting insulted, this isn't the phone for you!
Love the phone, hate the support. Don't get this phone if you don't know more than anyone else around here. Prepare for total Internet tough guy vengeance as they flex there "i know more unix than you!" muscles at every turn. Want a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer if a certain csv is supported by 2.2?
Prepare for a, total IRC rock em sock em, you don't know what i know, brawl as they flirt with file extensions and unix innuendos that you don't understand. Make new names in irc to mock you, and just piss all over yer newbness. Just bask in the awesomeness of there skills and eat it. YOU DONT KNOW MORE THAN ME LA LA LAA LAA LAAA LAAA!
Sums up my experience so far. Thanks IRC!

3 Reasons stopping me from buying a Galaxy Nexus Please help me change my mind :D

Hey everyone
As seen on this review: http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/17/2568348/galaxy-nexus-review (not sure if it is the final unit) the galaxy nexus is great in terms of both hardware and software but there are three reasons still persisting as to why I shouldn't buy the Galaxy Nexus
1.) The hardware could get obsoleted fairly quickly.
Although (as the review states) the phone is blazing fast, the hardware is only considered great in relation to other phones. (E.g. the Nexus One had the best hardware when compared to the G1 but when the Atrix was announced, it became fairly obsoleted) This could be a problem because right now the phone might have excellent hardware (and software), in a few months when CES 2012 comes along it is rumoured that there will be quad core phones which will greatly surpass the speed of our current-day phones (e.g. http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/15/r...ndroid-4-0-with-a-2-5ghz-quad-core-processor/) I know that nothing can substitute for pure vanilla android, the most recent updates from Google and huge developer base but the fact that technological advancements are only becoming more and more prominent and that within a year or so with the introduction of new apps and games, I feel that one year from now, the galaxy nexus might be like the G1 of today. (If anyone has any contradictory reasons, please state them as I really want to purchase a Galaxy Nexus and get rid of my Motorola Milestone (international version of OG droid)
2.) The battery might not suffice for a full day's use.
The only way I can consider my motorola milestone as a viable quality smartphone is if I overclock it to 1GHz (from 550mhz) and apply various tweaks which in turn only let me use the device for 5-7 hours max. If this is the case wit h the Galaxy Nexus, I probably won't want to buy it as I use my phone extensively and I don't want the hassle of charging every night (or at least every 5-7 hours)
3.) This one is not a huge issue for me but it may be in the future. With the gaming market actively expanding in terms of smartphones, with the way-obsoleted GPU that this phone packs, I fear that I may not be able to play a lot of games in the future.
most 'reviewers' are probably not charging the battery when they receive the phone, instead opting to insert the battery right away after opening the box and starting up the phone without charging.
this leads to inconclusive reviews regarding the battery life.
just a thought.

You're right. As stated in the review, they haven't tested the battery extensively, and they said they would update the review with the new battery findings in the future
1) what do you mean could get obsolete?
it is already obsolete except for the 720 HD screen LOL
2) you might be right about that, we'll see how many hour this 1750 mAh battery can pull
3) you also forgot to mention about the lack of space for the ever increasing storage space required to play a game

Every phone will be outdated in a year....If thats a big deciding factor u may never get a phone.
Sent From Samsung Vibrant
I have to confirm what they said about the battery life. I charged the phone up fully before even turning it on and with heavy use (you know how it is the first day you get a new phone) I got around 7 hours out of it. With normal usage I can imagine it lasting a full work day but if you are a heavy user you probably want to look into an external or expanded battery.
As for gaming, from my tests some games really don't run very well, although it might be partly due to them not being optimised for the Nexus hardware or ICS.
To be honest though with any modern smartphones 6-8 hours is pretty much what you can expect with heavy use. I doubt you will find anything much better. If gaming is important I suggest you hold off getting a Galaxy Nexus though. Right now it's not looking too good.

probably it just need some optimization
but compared to the SGS2 T989 it sure it's lacking a bit there
the T989 on stock can easily pull 14 hr ~ 18 hr with moderate use, and if you are light use, then you can get over a day with that phone
see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301609
Issues 1 and 2 apply to pretty much any smartphone you get nowadays. So STi489's statement is quite accurate.
I'll refrain from commenting on #3 because I don't do mobile gaming, so don't really know/care a lot about modern phone GPUs.
1. Every phone is obsolete 3-6 months after its made as technology is always advancing. Its similar to buying a pc if you need to buy one you get the best you can afford at that time. If you want something thats going to be future proof then you will never get anything as its just not possible. You can hold out for a quad core phone if you want but they wont start appearing for 3-6 months at least and then if you get one of those an 8-core phone maybe 9 months away from that so what are you going to do? The Galaxy Nexus can handle everything that will be thrown at it right now and it will always get the latest updates as soon as they are released by google which I think is more important than the speed of the phone.
2. As mentioned many times the battery tests are not thorough enough to be of any value but with any modern smartphone you arent going to get much more than 8-10 hours intensive use which should be more than enough to get you through a day without problems. If you think you are going to get a phone with an HD screen and dual or quad core processor to last 2-3 days you are dreaming. Leave it in standby most of the time and use it sparingly then yes but with moderate use a day is quite sufficient. You can buy 4800mAh backup chargers for about £20 which is what im getting instead of another battery and should be able to recharge your phone 2 or 3 times.
3. Im pretty sure there wont be many games in the next year that require a quad core phone as they wont have much of a target market. Dual core phones will easily be able to handle any game thrown at it for the foreseable future and it can easily be clocked to at LEAST 1.5GHz which is what its designed to run at so if you need extra speed you can get it. The iphone 4s only runs at 800MHz and look what that can do.

Mostly I agree with you, but on point 3 you mixed something up. iPhone 4s has a very capable (if not the best released) dual-core GPU, the PowerVR SGX 543MP2, while GN is using a overclocked PowerVR SGX 540. It is still more than capable though, but you're mixing up CPU with GPU in your post. Just wanted to clarify that.

the Gnex comes with a 1750mAh
I suppose it would last me 2-3 days (maybe i'm wrong) and I'm a light user
my friend's SGS2 lasts 2-3 days to him with light to moderate usage BUT not always connected
and I hope on what I assume will be true and hope the Gnex's battery life is better than my iP4 so it would be really an upgrade for me as I am not also connected to wifi and stay with 2G only..
I just hope Samsung will release an official extended battery (3000ish) with a kick stand (like those for HD2). It would be great.
I'm just concerned about how the GPU will cope in playing games. Otherwise, I can't wait until Sat/Sun for T-Mobile to get this in stock.

With WIFI off and using only 2G I think the battery life would be very good. Constant updates to social networking sites can be a real battery killer on todays phone.

thank you!
this would be a worthy upgrade from my iP4 imo. I'm prepared to switch to Android now
but I still have to wait 2-3 weeks before this phone arrives here @ the Philippines.
Thank you all so much for the replies!
I do believe I have changed my mind
1.) Yeah, even though the phone will be obsoleted in 3-6 months, all phones will likely to be obsoleted at a time close to their initial release.
2.) I don't mind buying another external battery for my phone, guess I never thought about it (Mark, what do you mean by: "You can buy 4800mAh backup chargers for about £20 which is what im getting instead of another battery and should be able to recharge your phone 2 or 3 times." Is this a charger than can supply battery on the go? Because I go to high school [yeah im 15 years old] and having an extra battery or charger works for me)
3.)I barely game anyways, and there are plenty of games that can still run on the gpu.

Something like *THIS*. Its basically a huge capacity rechargeable battery that you can plug any usb device into to charge it. In my opinion more practical than buying replacement batterys as you dont have to turn the phone off to keep going. It could even be used as a rechargeable led torch lol..
Im sure you could find one that can be delivered to your location with a google search.
Mark.
1. It only need optimizations. and Ice Cream Sandwich is the start of the long awaited hardware optimization that Android needs.
2. User dependent. and Galaxy Nexus has that feature that any iphone doesn't have. A replaceable battery. So you could bring an extra battery for emergencies. But i really do think that 1750mah can last you a day
3. GPU is still very capable to handle games. Again, just like no.1 all it needs is optimizations. Besides, i don't see game developers focusing on making games that can only run on a very very very powerful GPU.

Now weve had a play

Ok so now weve all had a decent play with our OX whats everyones thoughts?

Not much playing to be had here, battery life is just way too poor.
Are you considering a switch i lv put the ox back in the box an using my gs2 in hope a fix comes via OTA for all the little bugs

Arthur. You're boring.
If your device is that bad then send it back as it's clear you're having a lot more problems than everyone else.
no problems here in anyway battery life is fine handset running smooth and fastttttt....................superb device love mine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After I found a way to move my Angry bird space progress without Titanium backup, I'm content using un-rooted one x for now.
I'd like to use Adblock for web browsing and Autostarts to stop some apps from running, but ICS RAM management seems to be working fine.
Battery life seems OK, got 3 hrs 40 mins with full screen brightness and 3G on 2nd full charge.

I will send it back after the bank holiday IF I can get an RMA off Handtec.
I won't quit moaning about it, the OP asked for an opinion so I gave it. It's a big chunk of change to put down on a device to have something important let you down.
It's hard to appreciate a device when you can only get 3 hours screen time off a 3 hour charge.
It totally undoes all of the good work HTC have done with it. If you took the battery life of say an iPhone 4 and applied it here, it would be hands down the best piece of kit ever to come out. Literally.
I wouldn't use it as often at home because that is what the laptop and high end gaming PC is there for, so when out and about without access to a plug socket you want it to be at least reasonable. It seriously isn't.
Waiting for software / firmware updates when you have a limited time frame to return it is too much of a risk.
If HTC would have pushed 1.27 on launch day as anticipated a lot of this ill feeling wouldn't be here.
Your buying a device that is different to what is in the reviews.
Battery isn't great but its nothing different than other android phones.
ok so having had it since 7am this morning i must say its amazing, its buttery smooth, not had 1 bit of lag or stutter,
as it stands atm its currently on 9 hours 17 mins and the use i have been doing is
downloaded 7 apps,
installed gta3 from tegra zone which the download to play is 492mb over wifi,
took about 30 odd pics 2 videos 35 secs each
phone calls for about 45 mins total
set up dropbox, browsed ebay for 7 mins and brought 2 items,
ran 4x benchmarks
browesed market place for about 10 mins
sent and recieved around 40 texts,
played around on facebook,
as im a phone shop manager i treated myself for a comparison on it with
the razr
xperia s
s2
my nexus s
mainly cameras , benchmarks speed tests, really testing day .
1 major astonishment i found was
i managed to take come off lock screen boot camera-take a pic before the xperia s got into camera mode. winner,
but so far so good no issues from me and my sexy white x
cheers,

Whats the problem,
At the moment, I'm getting a very similar screen on time to my SGS2 (3+hrs) & my HTC ONE X screen is much brighter then I ever had it on my SGS2.
Its also a known fact (due to reviewers) that 1.27, which we don't have yet, 'dramatically' improves battery life with 1.28 'rumoured' to extend it even further!

I guess it is the chance we take on buying the device at launch, there always going to be problems both hardware and software we sometime so-called "bata tester" get stuck with.
You could just return it and wait for couple of months to see if HTC made any improvmements.

That is what I don't understand about this launch.
The phone reviewed isn't what we have. The reports of battery life and such aren't what we have paid for.
I contacted HTC by email , phone and Twitter and nobody has any ETA and even deny knowledge of an update coming for general release soon.
I just want the device the reviewers had.

Even without the update, your still getting a battery life very similar to Samsungs current flagship device (which has had a few software updates) - this is with a much brighter screen, a larger HD screen & a quad core processor when compared to the SGS2.
Are you just pissed you haven't got the 1.27 update (& don't know when you will...), or do you really think the battery is that bad?
I know 1.27 is gonna improve the battery, but even in its current state - when I compare it, it ain't that bad compared to the competition.

I had the SGS2 and the battery life is better than what we got here, seriously.
And I did have a Sensation around launch , it was glitchy but again the battery life was not this poor.
But it could also be a case of not noticing it as much because I could carry a spare battery if need be, but never felt the need to use it.
Today our car broke down on the motorway and after calling the RAC then having to get a tow, the battery was nearly depleted and I had the worry of whether it would last long enough to take the call from when they arrived.
Then having to send a few texts to let people know we wouldn't be getting there, just how on earth are you meant to appreciate the greatness of this phone with the constant battery worries?
Random point, but do this.
Go into the Play store, scroll down the free apps for a short while, then check your battery status. 3 or 4% down having done practically nothing.
Such are the risks of getting a v1.0 anything I'm afraid, it will almost always not be as good as v1.1+. You take the chance of having initial issues vs. having the latest greatest device first. This has always been the way, some of the early release iPhones have had terrible problems until receiving patches.
At the moment I'm loving the phone, I don't think the battery is all that bad so far, but looking forward to the updates making it better, I'm certainly happy with the choice I made, no question.

Think I will try a swap out for another, see how that fares. If it is exactly the same then atleast I know i've given it a fair roll of the dice.
It's like I am really hoping there is something wrong with mine, and the battery isn't how it's meant to be but the pattern is common on here and usage stats are all pretty much the same.
I wouldn't say its right to compare it to the iPhone neither. HTC have had plenty of time to get this right. I've had the Hero> Desire > Sensation and now this. Each time I keep expecting them to "get it right" and they never quite make it.
The craziest thing is, the Hero is still my pick of the bunch judging by how I felt at the time and the fact I added a hench battery and made it even better.
i think alot of users were expecting too much from the phone massive hype led to a kick in the nuts for some .. ????take the phone as it is, if battery is going to make or break your decision then a machine like this maybe isnt for you.
end of the day it is android 4 with sense 4 big screen quad core - expect battery to be poor until you have a few cycles and updates are sent out, dhd was worse i had 2 off them....
cheers
Im getting my HTC One X on Tuesday next week from phones4u hopefully, cant wait!. But ive read such a difference in people experiences with the battery life of this phone that im not sure what to make of it! lol, ill just have to wait and see I guess and report back how i find it, it promising to see that the majority, correct me if im wrong, of UK users seem to be reporting good battery life though!

[Q] Upgrading from a HTC Sensation, worth it?

Hi there,
I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who upgraded from a HTC Sensation to a Galaxy Nexus, and could tell me if it was a worthwhile upgrade?
I'm currently rocking a Sensation on Telus (unlocked from Bell) which is running the best AOSP ROM that I've been able to find. I was then considering upgrading to an HTC One X or Galaxy S3. But then I realized I really love the AOSP look and feel, and instead of fighting with AOSP roms on those phones, that I should instead just get a Nexus device.
The upgrade would cost be around $300-350 (while I can probably sell my Sensation for $200-250, so roughly $100 net cost). Is there any noticeable performance upgrade between these phones? I'll miss having the microSD slot (32GB) but I rarely listen to music on my phone, so I could live with the reduced storage space.
Any thoughts and/or opinions would greatly be appreciated
Worth every penny, I think

Yes,don't think you'll be dissapointed
No brain'r for around $100. Worth it for the 18 zillion roms alone!
I did. Well worth the upgrade if you don't like the speed of Sense 4 on the S3 processor, or if you can't stand Sense 3.6.
Gnex is great.
I did, and the first thing you're gonna notice is the screen on time. With Sensation I'd always got less than 2 or 2.5 screen on time, with nexusGSM, well I can get up to 5 easily.
WORTH IT.

Very much worth it. I came from a mytouch 4g slide and I can't believe I didn't get a galaxy nexus sooner. I went from a mytouch 4g slide to a sgs2 to a galaxy nexus and this phone beats all of those names down no complaints

I made the same transition a little over a month ago - had an unlocked Bell Sensation that I used on AT&T in the states.
I considered the decision for quite some time as I was worried that the upgrade wasn't worth it. After making the upgrade, I am so happy that I did!
Pros:
- If you like AOSP or a stock look/feel, the Nexus will be a great fit for you (I ran HyperNonSense on my Sensation - a minimalist ROM stripped of sense)
- Screen size - I text a lot and now no longer feel the need to switch to landscape mode to type up text messages and emails
- Battery life - a slight improvement from my Sensation but never really had issues making it through the day with either device
- Jelly Bean - BUTTERY Smooth! Can't even begin to describe how nice it is. This is what Android was supposed to be like. This OS is a game changer IMO
Cons:
- No SD card slot. I can live with 16GB on board but having the ability to add up to 64gb with a microSD card would be nice for long trips
- 'Feel' of the hardware - I like the build of HTC phones, they seem to have more 'heft' to them. Not that the Nexus feels cheap but definitely uses more plastics than the Sensation
Verdict: Make the switch. I don't think you'll regret it!
Thanks for all the replies so far!
I'm fairly convinced to grab a Gnexus as soon as I am able to find a decently priced one used. I'm moving back to a big city soon, and there's always 3-4 of them listed on kijiji and craigslist there. Looking forward to joining this community soon .
My only other concern is the battery life of the Gnex. I've read several threads about folks complaining about the battery life. Then again, every android device has always had at least someone complain about the battery life. Is this anything I should worry about?
Do it!
I guess I'm going to get flamed for this but I have to say a BIG no to Galaxy Nexus. I have both the GN and GS3. Here is why:
I love the Nexus devices and their ability to be upgraded directly and first but this phone isn't a REAL Nexus device. Verizon still has the upgrade button in their hand.
The battery life is one of the worst I've ever seen. No matter what rom/kernel combo you use, you should expect no better than 10 hrs and 2 hrs of screen time AT BEST. With GS3, I routinely get 30+ hours and 4+ hours of screen time on stock rom. Others report even better battery life than mine.
Now that the Bootloader is unlocked on the GS3, there is no reason to stay with this POS phone. We got screwed by Samsung and Verizon. The duped Google in thinking this was state of the art phone but it was nothing but a test device for the beast GS3. Plenty of roms are out there for GS3 and the Alpha CM10 is nearly perfect and an RC imho. The bootloader has only been unlocked for a few days though, I'm sure floodgates will be open soon.
Sorry about the strong opinion but I was very frustrated with this phone for 6 months. Now my 14 year old son has to deal with it.

battery life is great. Don;t be discouraged by reading complaints, most have no merit. No smart phone survives 4hrs of screen time running on wifi streaming hd video on full brightness lol. i came from htc inspire (1250mah battery) so for me its awesome using the phone all day and still being around %60 by the end of the night , my inspire would be dead before i left work

Have you browsed the GS3 forum? I thought the same and bought 2 extra batteries with an external power unit to feed GN. Then I bought the GS3 and was shocked how the two cousins differed so much. Here is a little unscientific comparison I'm trying between the two today:
GS3 Running CM10, 2100 battery, fully charged, calibrated battery: 97% left with 17 min of screen time and an hour since unplugged
GN Running Codename Android 3.3, Franco Kernel, fully charged, calibrated battery: 97% left with 58 seconds of screen time and an hour up time
I'll report more later on tonight.

I appreciate the honesty. I'm not entirely sure if the Verizon version of the phone performs significantly differently form the GSM version. I would hazard a guess that the LTE functionality would probably get tossed into the equation, but who knows.
Either way, my plan is to buy one second hand, try it out for a few weeks, and then I'll make a decision on whether to sell my Sensation, or simply resell the Nexus. I'm not a power user that requires hours upon hours of screen time a day. I routinely can get away with 1.5 to 2 days between charges on my Sensation, and I only ever run it dry if I'm tethering with it all day. If the Gnex is as terrible as some have made it sound, I can simply resell it for more or less the same that I'll be purchasing it for.

Have to remember, there is a 400mah (20% increase in size) difference in batteries. The gs3 is a great phone no contest but also consider the gnex is a great phone too and at $350 for no contract cost versus ~$600 for no contract for s3 i would HOPE the gs3 is better.
It's the same debate with any phone, most see no purpose to getting a phone that isn't the absolute best, but some of us look for a good price : performance ratio. When the next flagship phone comes out, youll see the same threads about the gs3 whre people say "the phone sucks, theres no point when you can get (insert new phone) instead!"
nexus: Released 2011, November
Gs3: Released 2012, May

I look forward to your results.
I also considered the GS3, but the cost is significantly higher at the moment (roughly $200 more). Plus the Nexus has the advantage of being a pentaband phone, which is great for me since it allows me to use the phone with any providers here in Canada. And the last bonus of the Nexus is the fact that I wouldn't have to fight with it to get an AOSP experience. Coming from the HTC Desire and Sensation, I've always had to fight and wait quite a while after every new Android version for really good AOSP roms. These are what I look forward to most about the Nexus device.
But believe me, the GS3 tempted me as well. Here at work about half the guys got brand new GS3 from the company, and they absolutely love them (I'm only a temp, so no phone for me ).

same battery, 2100 mah OEM, is being used on both phones. I don't dare using the stock battery (1850).
I'm sure the battery is great with GSM phones because they don't truly have 4G LTE. It's not even close. 4G radio is a battery hog. So if you are using it on a 3g/3.5g networks, you should be quite happy. But Verizon network has the best signal, coverage, and speed. This comes at the expense of battery life. Somehow, between GN and GS3, Samsung figured out how to address this. That's all I'm saying.
Also, there is a thread on GS3 forums addressing the World Phone/GSM issue. It appears that Verizon's phone can be unlocked to work as a GSM phone. I doubt this can be used with Sprint since most their phones have a hidden sim card. Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809314
I just think that giving business to a company for this phone while there are better phones out there sends the wrong message. If you punish them, maybe next time this won't happen. Hoping the upcoming JB radios can help with these battery issues but I've heard it's the processor.
ah. I have the gsm one and that likely is the difference. Mine I get away with charging every other day but as said it is only 3g (hspa w/e its 3g).
If you don't need LTE, buy the GSM version, it's the "true" nexus because it recieves the updates directly from Google, besides, the battery life, at least in my case, is great, with the original battery

That's the plan. We only have access to the GSM version here in Canada anyways. I believe Verizon had the exclusivity with the LTE model.

Considering upgrading from a G2 to a G4? What's the battery life really like?

Hope I'm posting this on the right place, missed it and was told by an ad where to place last questions when I asked about another phone.... but of course I can't remember what he told me back then :silly:
Anyway, how is the battery life on a G4? From tech blogs to youtube reviews, opinions are all over the place. Some people say 2 and something SOT. Others claim it's great and that they can go a full day with heavy use and 3d gaming, etc and report over 5 hours SOT with that sort of use.
I loved my G2 for a long time because of how well it battery would last. It's not very good anymore, it went through a lot of charging cycles... Hardware and specs are enough for me, so I don't need the 820 on the G5 nor am I feeling the love for that phone from what I've seen. Especially for the difference on price the two will have and the bargain price one can get some places for a G4.
GSM Arena tools tell me the endurance batery test for the G2 is 81h, a terrible 54h on the G4. Web browsing (more the sort of load I tend to pull from a battery when it comes to SOT) gives it a much more bleak picture: 11:24 for the G2 and only 7:54 for the G4.
Should I trust these numbers? Is the G4 such a power hoarder? Are the different numbers I come across because of some version with or without some update that improved/made things worst?
I'm referring to a non-branded G4, international version. Opinions from real life users would be much appreciated!
Cheers! :good:

I have had a g4 for about 2 weeks and i want my g3 back even it seemed better on power than this. My g2 was pbenominal even acter 1.5 years old. This thing but i only have root no bootloader unlock no custom roms or kernals
I made that jump last week.
The G2 was an excellent phone.
The G3 didn't seem like much to me, and I couldn't understand the battery drop-off.
I'm loving the G4, the camera's excellent and the battery life, though not as good as the G2 is not bad at all.
So already I have two different experiences... one that the G3 is better than the G4, another the exact opposite Why is there such a discrepant experience? I know about low signal and constant scanning but I assume those two members above are using their phones on the same region/places/ways...
My G2 battery life is better than G4 at first. Then I turned off two cores in my G4, disabled some settings, and everything seems great now. Good battery life.
Today's battery life on my G4 H815,MM 20d,unlocked bootloader+root+Xposed+Greenify

I had my g3 modded out the gills. Undervolted all linds done bare minimal stock system i could get almost 2 days of moderate usage 6 to 8 bours sot. G4 i love the camera still expiermenting. Im rooted ive managed a few tweaks but not scare of bricking just hate to have to start over. Want over clock undervolt and id be happy. Just knowing i got a locled tight bootloader urks me the most. Its a great phone. Would prefer my g2 over 3 or 4 untill bootloader gets unlocked. I have a lotta quirks on mine i could fix. The battery seems to stay full untill about 12 or 1 then drops at about 1 percent every 3 or 4 min. So i charge off and on throug the day so when i home at night itll make it to bed with like 35 or 40 left
Well, those numbers posted look better than my G2 ever was. But I'm also seeing there's a lot of customization involved to unlock the potential of the phone. Is that why people are reporting such major differences? I must be getting way too old as I no longer find it fun to mess around with phones and PCs, I just want something that works and gets updates that make it better... NO!! This doesn't mean I should go with an Iphone!!
More of a general question... could it be worth keeping the G2 until these new midrange phones with the SD650 or 652 (something like that) start to pop up? I mean, they'll be more powerful than the G2 and probably as cheap or cheaper than a G4. I'm thinking about phones like the Idol 4S.
I've been away from the smartphone market for a long time and I'm having a real hard time catching up. Samsung seems to have turned into some sort of Apple where you pay for the "prestige" of the brand. Motorola has a couple interesting phones but apparently the new Lenovo owner is going to end the brand and I have no idea if that means support. And then these new Chinese phones seem interesting and apparently have good support... Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.
Point being, new midrange is pretty much flagship to my sort of use! It's hard for me to figure out if I even need a new phone! But I would hate to lose the buttons on the back, something that I think only LG owners would get
@Kutusov having read the above, I would seriously recommend the G4.
It's cheap (actually very well priced), still be cheaper as soon as the G5 is released, it's an excellent phone with a FANTASTIC camera.
And it's got the back buttons. In a very short time you'll understand just how far phones have moved in such a short time.
The G2 was spectacular in it's time.
The G3 was refinement but rough.
The G4 blows it away.
Made the jump from the G2 to the G4 a year ago, not disappointed at all
Battery life difference is roughly ~30 minutes worth of screen on time, with the G2 edging out ahead, everything else is just hands down better on the G4 ( excluding the rear facing speaker -_- )
So I'd say go for it, phone's pretty cheap now.
You'll get different results from everyone as we each use our phones differently, different apps and priorities.
If you have social media constantly updating and play 3d games you will need to carry a charger with you, it won't make it through a whole day.
I've disabled most of the bloat, use greenify and get upto 5hrs SOT when reading an ebook from the SD card, but only 3hrs when browsing on mobile data.
Overall I'm very happy with the G4, it would have been even better without the useless 4k screen but there's always a compromise.
I've had the G4 since July 2015 and I'm satisfied with battery consumption(Canadian H812 variant). Not rooted. I disable apps I don't use, installed Lux to control brightness & GPS is only ever used when I need it (rarely).
Per gsam app, averages since last complete charge:
Battery life: 1d 16.9hrs
Screen on: 5hr 48mins
Sent from my LG-H812 using Tapatalk
I didn't have the G2, but I'll speak for the G4: the battery is OK.
I usually recharge every 2 days with a normal use (internet surfing, music, watch an episode of a series in the bus, watch the time,...)

Yes, I'll probably go for it. I've seen it somewhere for €330, brand new and sealed, same price no matter what sort of back cover.
I really do like the back buttons, I always go looking for them when I pick some other phone, I would really miss those.
Cheers guys! :highfive:

How did ya disable the big cores?
The only solution I found was a script.
With the custom Kernels I tried they always turned themself back on. But its been a while since I tried one.
And you get the battery life that you can expect from a 3000mah battery with an 5.5" screen at 1440p.
i would like to get one but not until if ever gets bootloader unlocked for US.
i was on a G2 and bought a G4, the battery life is not bad, but the G2 was way better, but, we are talking about a 1080p screen and a QHD screen...there are no miracles ! I am very happy whit my G4, takes very good pictures and for me, the battery gives "juce" for a day, watching movies/series going to the WEB (3G / 3.5G) but i just turn the data when i want, at home, always with the WiFi turn on, so, i wake up at 6:00AM and i get at home at 6:00PM and i still have 40% our 30%.
For me, this is a very good phone !

Yes, that's more or less my sort of use also. I know that LG wanted to come out with a very good panel to demolish the usually praised amoled from Samsung but it sort of sucks that they did. I have no use for it, maybe it's good for this new VR thing but that's something I'm not even curious to try.
Still, it has the quickest charge possible... swapping batteries
guys i know theres lemon battery. but isnt there like an aftermarket one that will fit like normal but higher mah?
