I plan on using my desire in the car and playing music through my car stereo's aux input. But I dont really want to be picking up the phone to skip forward and back through tracks. The headset that ships with the phone has great inline controls that work with spotify. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that makes a cable that has a 3.5mm jack at both ends (i.e. one end into the phone, the other into the car stereo) but also has inline controls. I could then find a way of mounting the inline control somewhere on the dash.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have done this in the past by cutting the headphone ends off a cable and then soldering this to a 3.5mm jack plug available from electronics shops etc, not too much of a job to do, but will prob mean you have to find another htc headset with the controls if you want to keep your original headset
Haven't seen this no, but it should be easy to fix.
Either just solder the cable yourself, or just buy a 3,5 to 3,5 cable and insert it. Should solve your issues. Just ordered the Griffin SmartTalk which has inline controls and a 3,5mm jack output myself, it had good reviews for the iPhone and should work well with the my Desire aswell.

Any adaptors that will allow me to use proper 3.5 inch headphone jack in place of the mini USB ones ( i dont like the in ear phones) checked ebay and couldnt see anything?

Ouch, that thing is both horribly badly designed and prohibitively expensive- it's going to stick out what looks like an inch by itself, most headphone plugs will add another inch on top of that- I need something that fits flush with the bottom of the phone (comes out at a right angle) AND supplies an input for the charger. One can only dream!
The orbit would make a great on-mains Wifi internet radio if such a gubbin existed- hook up some speakers, start TCPMP, sorted!

Might have been worth while if I didn't use an iPod for all my portable audio needs- have you seen any A2DP compatible speakers around?
Looks like there are hacks out there, but no official products, the combination really would just turn the Orbit into an incredibly expensive Wifi radio! But where's the fun in just going out and buying a proper one!
Have a look at the products made by Parrot there are a few Bluetooth audio add on boxes, I fail to see the relevance to WiFi?? as the A2DP profile is Bluetooth - it even works on the T-Mobile MDA-CIII which has no WiFi - Mike
I say wifi radio because I listen to internet radio stations around the house using the Orbit, and the ol' tinternet comes via the wifi doohickey!
A2DP is, of course, a bluetooth profile and would be the method over which I get decent sounding audio from the Orbit to some speakers whilst still having the Orbit plugged into mains so the battery doesn't get sucked dry... that said I think the Orbit will last a good few hours streaming internet radio, although I have yet to put that to the test.
My other solution would be, as mentioned above, an adaptor that allows both the charger AND headset to be plugged in- I can't see this as being technically impossible.
With a brief cursory investigation I have discovered, I think, that the headset uses a proprietary 6-pin connection on the opposite side of the mini-usb connector. The headphones do not use the 4-pin standard mini-usb connector on the other side, but a connector that uses both should be reasonably simple to produce. Ergo it should be childs play for a third party to produce an Artemis dock that contains not only a connection to USB but a standard 3.5mm amplified microphone socket alongside a standard 3.5mm amplified stero audio jack... not to mention a button on the front of the dock for picking up calls and a volume slider if you really wanted them.
Call me crazy, but I want one of those!

Dear lord! You've made my day! Hmmm, a little jiggery pokery and I might even be able to incorporate that into a dock but it'll be fantastic for charging and listening to net radio at work- takes that little extra load off my desktop PC.

Hi,
Does anyone know if the above would work with a set of mini stereo speakers with a 3.5mm headphone jack (like the walkman speakers i used to have, back in the day...) to listen to the FM radio while charging the phone from mains? Or would you still need the headphones plugged into get any FM reception?
Daft question maybe, but I wondered whether the device would just use the speaker wires as an antenna instead of the headphone wires?
It will work fine, I am going to use mine to connect my orbit to my home stereo and charge it at the same time.

Anybody know of an Artemis mini usb to 2.5mm 3 pole jack plug adapter which allows the connection to deliver audio and microphone capability ?
I would like to connet my Artemis/Orbit to the Autocom intercom system on my motorcycle . This uses a lead with a 2.5mm jack plug at the phone end and a 3.5mm jack at the Autocom system end. Both are 3 pole.

Is this so you can listen to music from the Orbit? I've had difficulty on my bike with this...music cuts out and wont restart after phone call is over. In the end, I bought the Autocom bluetooth dongle and now bluetooth the Orbit to the bike. I get phone calls and GPS just fine, but I use a wired iPod for music.

Does this support the Artemis? It isn't in the list....
There was a posting for the mini USB PinOut some Time ago. Look in the wiki Section to find it. Here is what they showed up with.
Maybe This will Help someone to build their own Adapter or whatsoever.

so what was the general concensus with using Autocom? Did the 2.5mm jack work?
I want to avoid using the bluetooth option on autocom, since I might just as well go for a Scala bluetooth headset instead if the jack doesnt work...

I need it for answering when ride my moto. (this is why I don't need BT headset - but I have it)
Well, here in My country i didn't found a headset for Uni, because they are too rare.. and Uni have an 3,5mm jack, not 2,5mm as used in lot of gsm phones.
So, if anyone has skematiks, how to build headset for Uni from other type of stereo headset, I would apreciate it.

Basically, you can just buy a normal headset, then replace only the jack. All headsets (should) have the same impendance(did I spell that right?), so no modification to the headset itself should be needed.
Just get a 3.5mm 3-channel(not the general one, you need the extra channel for the mic...but I guess you already know that) jack from an electronics store, cut off the original, identify the wires used(using a multimeter, or linking it up to another cable playing music), and splice on the new 3.5 mm one used. Just be sure to insulate the wire joints well so they won't accidentally short-circuit.
There: one 3.5mm headset, ready for use. Maybe slap on some cosmetics to the joint, so it won't look that ugly and homemade(a heat-shrink tube should do the trick, along with some padding to give it a some taper like those on factory-made jacks.

I'm a bit lost with this one and cant quite seem to find\word what I am looking for in my searches.
I basically just want to connect an audio input into my Desire. I assume this is possible as the headphone jack has a Mic input functionality. Any ideas? I am thinking of a short cable that plugs into the headphone socket and has a female 3.5mm jack on the other end into which a standard microphone\aux input can be plugged?

Have you tried something like the iRig? It's predominantly used for connecting electric guitars to iPhones/iPads for use with GarageBand, etc. - plugs into the 3.5mm headphone jack, and has one mono 6.4mm input for guitar cable, and a stereo out for attaching headphones. I haven't yet bought one (hoping to get one soon - about $25 on Amazon, and there are other alternatives) so I can't say for sure that it'd work, but it might be worth investigating some more.

I bought the Samsung HM3700 Stereo bluetooth headset which comes with one. I am sure Monoprice.com has one or even Ebay; but if it's worth 24.99 to yah you can buy the headset.
Sort of what I'm after, but not really. I don't want a dock, I want a cable. This is for portable listening on the go with an amp.

Not sure I see what you're talking about; our just looks like a bluetooth headset to me.
The pinout for micro usb is the same across phones, right? If so, this should work.

That is quite interesting and just might work.
What remains to be seen is whether or not that provides superior sound quality to the headphone jack. It just occurred to me that the Samsung car dock (which I have) is essentially the same thing as that USB micro to 3.5mm jack plug unless the phone has software which can recognize the difference. In this case, volume would still be controlled via the phone. I might have to test and see if I can hear a difference in sound quality, but I doubt it (or at least doubt that the dock will be better.)
I have both the official samsung desk dock, and car dock. They both have 3.5mm audio line out. Isn't that what you're asking for? I didn't know it had a "fancy" term though..
Edit: Maybe it's not exactly what you're asking for. I think you're hoping to get line level straight out of the DAC, which I don't think is possible with the SGSII. The audio dock line out is around the same quality as the headphone jack (as far as my "non audiophile" ears can tell) and it's certainly volume-controlled by software. Anyhow, some of the new custom ROMs out have beats audio and dspmanager built-in, which go a long way into tweaking the way audio exits the device. You may want to look into that.
Yeah the desk dock is still less portable than I'm looking for. I have DSP Manager on my phone and it helps to some extent. Guess I'm just stuck with the headphone jack. Thanks!
im pretty sure you need usb-host first, i think a usb dac has been used back on the nook color w/cm7 but then you lose portability and all that.

In this way(car mode), I can listen to my mp3 collection on my HOX and answer call with it through my car audio system. Most of the case/cradle available only offer charging but no audio out.
Of course, I can use the 3.5mm jack connected to the headphone hole on the HOX and then connect the USB in car charger but this would not be convenience. Imagine if you could have the convenience of snap the HOX into a case and all are set for you.
Please do share the link if someone have come across this case...

Not really. With this you would have to manual plug in the headphone jack which defeat the main purpose and it can't connect to my car audio system. That why I chose Pogo. But thanks anyway for sharing...
