Email auto delete?

I have searched, but can't find an obvious solution to this yet.
When downloading emails to the TP2, I continually get a problem. I receive part of the mail (first 5k for example), then click to download rest of the mail and click send & receive on the inbox again. The TP2 then sees the email as 'read' and deletes it - before I have chance to see the remainder of the mail.
Is there a setting somewhere to prevent this auto-delete (at least until I've read it!)?

The reason the mail gets deleted is probably because you have set up your email account as POP3 account. If you use IMAP, you won't have this problem...

Is it possible to change an email account from POP3 to IMAP? I always assumed that was down to the ISP to determine the type of account?
Or are you suggesting I find an alternative provider?

It doesn't matter whether it's a POP or IMAP account - it shouldn't auto-delete messages.
I had 3 accounts set up at POP3 and all was fine - I leave the setting to keep them on the server when deleting them off the phone so I can still download the messages when logging on at home with my computer.
However, since a hard reset to sort a few other problems I've been experiencing this 'auto-delete' phenomenom - I get an mail and read it WITHOUT deleting it yet next time I look the message has gone - it's not even in the 'deleted' folder.

You can also set your account to download the full message. Maybe you have set your setting to download the first 5k. It can be done by the advanced setting of your account.

I'm glad its not just me!
I have it set to only download the first 5k, and then it works OK - until I get mails smaller than this or try to download the rest of the message - at which point it deletes them off the device AND the server - before I've read them.

I had all accounts set to download the whole message and attachements and to leave them on the server when deleted - yet they were auto deleting off the phone and from the server.
I have now set them as IMAP, but have to remember not to delete them off the phone before getting them downloaded onto my PC - not ideal!

I can read my email before it is deleted but the mail in the inbox mail disappears and doesn't show up in deleted folder (as mentioned above). I have my Tilt2 set to leave mail on the server so I can get the same mail on my desktop computer. I assume that the mail "disappears" from the phone inbox when it goes off the server to my desktop.
My "fix" is to move anything I want to keep on my phone to a "Save" folder. Yes it is a PITA but at least for some important stuff, it remains on the phone til I want it deleted.

Why doesn't whole message download
I have set my email accounts to download the Whole Message and all attachments. However, when I log on I get the message header only and a comment that the whole message will be downloaded next time I logon. I have to come out of the account, logon again and select "Send/Receive" A bit irritating. Is this normal?

Leave Email On Server

How do I set up my email so that it leaves a copy on the server so when I get to my laptop the message can be downloaded? I do my email on my laptop but need to be able to receive / send email from my HTC as well. Thanks!

By using POP account setup. I have POP on my TP2 and on my home computer... On my home computer I have set on the account settings that when I remove the email in my Outlook it will remove it from the server...

So ... what is the setting on your TP2 that specifies, "do not remove from server"?

There is a setting on the edvanced settings menu when you setup the account, or go to edit the account settings.

use imap instead of pop. pop downloads messages and wont mark them as read on the server or delete them after a month or whenever you set it, and some pop clients delete the email from the server after its pulled. imap is much more advanced and if you can get imap-idle you get push email support.

Leave Email on Server, and other Advanced Settings
I have been frustrated with this issue also. I use my phone for POP email when I am away from my computer. It is almost always business, and I need to keep records of communications in one place. Using Outlook, I archive all old emails to a network server. Since installing my current ROM, I have been unable to find access to the email size, signature and delete handling options. As a result, emails that I delete from the phone also get deleted from the server before I download them to my PC. This is a big problem since I sometimes delete messages from my phone without taking action - planning to deal with them the next day from the office. Dealing with multiple email accounts and up to 50 messages per day makes the phone very cluttered unless I regularly clear them out.
I just discovered the "back door" into the old WinMo style advanced email settings using a tip from another thread regarding email signatures.
I am using the Energy ROM (08-Sep-10, which I love). Here is how to get to the advanced email settings:
1) From any email Inbox (not the Sense screen) tap Menu/Tools/Options to get to the Messaging settings page.
2) Tap an email account on the list.
3) Tap "Send/Receive Schedule".
4) Tap "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the screen.
5) Choose your option under "When deleting messages:"
Other advanced options are also available this way, including email signatures for each account, as well as download size and scheduling.
I'm happy again!

I too thank you for posting this. I needed to change this on one of my accounts but had forgotten where the change needed to be made. You saved me lots of time searching.

Is there anyway I can the HTC email widget to display my googlemail account as I've been trying to set it up bit without success?

I couldn't use theHTC mail widget for gmail either. I could setup hotmail no problem. Is it possible that gmail must be used through the gmail app only?

Looks like which is a shame as I prefer the HTC email layout

add account (active sync)
email address - enter your full email address (eg. [email protected])
server address "m.google.com"
domain - leave blank
username - enter your full email address (eg. [email protected])
password - your password
select SSL

it is possible to use the HTC widget for gmail yea.
First you have to go into gmail on your pc then settings (top right)
Then choose "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"
Then choose "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)" or "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on" deppending on what you want.
Then hit "save changes" at the bottom of the page.
now on the desire:
put the widget down.
choose to manually enter settings.
All default settings should be fine, just enter your gmail user and pass.
Then all should be good =]

I've tried both comments above, I get to the screen asking what data I want to sync but when i click finish setup, I just get an error message saying failed to create the account, pls try again later

You want the pop3 option on your phone, not the activesync one. Just put in your google username/password. Make sure you have a data connection to the internet (3g/wifi).

I suggest using IMAP. Add the mail widget to one of the homescreens then tap to make an account. Choose pop/IMAP and you want IMAP.
Then add in your gmail (googlemail email and password. Make sure you are connected via wifi or your mobile connection and you should be all set....

Well, i said pop3 but yes, it's techinically the Other(pop3/imap) option. If you are setting up gmail then you don't have to choose manual, and therefore you don't actually select either pop3/imap, just enter your username and password...

Nope, neither of these work either

Try putting in "googlemail" instead of "gmail" where your email address and username goes.
That seemed to solve my problem.

I was putting googlemail but tried gmail and all working ok now so cheers

no problem. strange that some people need to use gmail and others need to use googlemail to get this to work

Gmail IMAP working like a charm for me.

Thinkin may stick to the gmail app now though as tend to get notified of new emails quicker then the HTC widget.

I have one gmail account through the gmail app and another gmail account through the HTC mail via ActiveSync. both push through as fast as each other imo.

help with email app please!!!

i have searched all over google already..
So on my S3 i been using the stock email app. i have a hotmail account, same one for years. Every so often when i check my emails they automatically get deleted or disappear. So i log onto my hotmail.com or now "outlook" on my computer and all my emails that disappear move into a POP folder, thats why their not showing up on my phone. I have tried going to more options, and POP and deleting emails settings on my hotmail options.. changed it to what people suggest, and still the same thing happens. Its starting to really piss me off.
I have not tried k-9 email, i would like to use that as a final resort. i like the stock email app, i would just like someone to help me please with this, usually i can figure these things out but i have been banging my head on this for the past month now. Anyone else had this issue? what settings do i need to change on my phone? or on my hotmail account?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Have you tried searching Google Play for Outlook App?

Yes. i have seen that app, but like i said before i would like to use the stock email app. If i download the Outlook app it will still put my emails in a POP folder. Plus the Outlook app is ****... and has ****ty reviews.

In Outlook.com, if you go to More mail settings -> POP and deleting downloaded messages, there are two options for POP syncing:
- Don't let another program delete messages from Outlook. (If your other program is set to "delete messages from the server," we'll simply move them to a special POP folder. They won't be deleted.)
- Do what my other program says—if it says to delete messages, then delete them.
Basically, this happens because POP3 is an unidirectionnal way to communicate between a mail client and a mail server. When the client connects to the server, the server sends all the mails he has to the client. Then the server waits for an instruction from the client: either to delete or not the messages the client has successfully received. As POP3 is unidirectionnal, it can't send a "delete" instruction to the server when you delete a message in your client: it's all or nothing. This was useful when storage space in mailboxes was limited -- when you have a local copy of your mails in your computer, then there is no need to keep a copy in the server, and it frees storage space --, but nowadays, most mailboxes have plenty of space, so there is no need to delete mails from the server.
The last option will obey to what your client send to your mail server: if your client tells the server to delete all the received mails, then Hotmail/Outlook.com will delete straightforward the said mails. On the other hand, the first option won't obey your client's instruction -- and if I'm correct, that's the default configuration in Outlook.com; instead of deleting the mails, Hotmail/Outlook.com will simply move them to a special "POP" folder for you to manually decide later what to do with them in your webmail.
Having those informations, you then may want to check what are your actual Email app's configuration about received mails and selecting your prefered option in Outlook.com. But I believe there is a better option for mail syncing.
What I may suggest you is to add your Hotmail/Outlook.com email account as an Exchange ActiveSync account, instead of a classic POP3 account. This way, you have bi-directionnal communication with your mail account -- a per-mail control of your emails --, push notifications -- you will receive mails as they arrive in your inbox --, access to all your email folders -- you are not limited to your inbox only -- and you can sync your contacts' informations in your Android address book with the infos from your email account.
To do that:
1. Open your Email app in Android;
2. Go to Settings;
(2.2 Optional -- You may want to delete your actual Hotmail/Outlook.com account from the app. It's not necessary, and you may want to do it only at the end of this procedure, when you see your Exchange setup working.)
3. In Settings, add a new email account;
4. Enter your Hotmail/Outlook.com email address in the account field and your password in the password field. Then, press Manual setup;
5. Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync type account;
6. Click Next -- there is no need to change the default settings;
7. At the Account options screen, again, no real need to change anything, though you *may* want to change Period to sync Email to access older emails. Then, click Next;
8. Type a name for your email account to appear in Email app, then you're done!

[Q] GSIII Sync Interval editing

Hey guys....
Not sure if its posted anywhere else, I had a check and can't find out what I am after...
Anyways, I have a Rogers/AT&T S3 that I want to change the email and contact sync interval on. Instead of it checking every 15 minutes, I only want it to check let's say... every 2 hours or so. Is there an option somewhere that I can change that on? Maybe an app or something to help out with that?
I've turned my sync off altogether to save battery and I keep forgetting to check my emails... I'm just wondering if there's an in between setting...

Hi! It depends on what type of mail account you are using.
Gmail (Google accounts) and enterprise email (Microsoft Echange ActiveSync accounts) are pushed to your phone. So you don't have (and cannot) change the update frequency of these accounts: when a change occurs in the mail server -- a new mail arrives, a new contact is created, a new appointment gets added to your agenda... --, the mail server sends the update to your phone. It's not the phone who initiate the update: it's the mail server.
If you use POP or IMAP (Email accounts) to retrieve your mails, you can control the sync frequency. Contrary to a pushed protocol as described above, POP and IMAP are pulled mail protocols -- means: the phone has to initiate the sync process. It's the phone who contact the mail server to check if there are updates to download.
You can select the sync interval when you first add the Email account. To change the sync frequency for an already existing Email account:
Go to Settings and, under Accounts, select your Email account you want to modify;
Next, click on Settings to change the settings for this account;
Again, select your Email account in the list;
Scroll the settings and select Sync schedule;
You can now configure when should your emails for this account be synced. You can configure Peak schedule and Off-peak schedule to auto-sync between 15 min to once a day.
