[Q] GSIII Sync Interval editing - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys....
Not sure if its posted anywhere else, I had a check and can't find out what I am after...
Anyways, I have a Rogers/AT&T S3 that I want to change the email and contact sync interval on. Instead of it checking every 15 minutes, I only want it to check let's say... every 2 hours or so. Is there an option somewhere that I can change that on? Maybe an app or something to help out with that?
I've turned my sync off altogether to save battery and I keep forgetting to check my emails... I'm just wondering if there's an in between setting...

Hi! It depends on what type of mail account you are using.
Gmail (Google accounts) and enterprise email (Microsoft Echange ActiveSync accounts) are pushed to your phone. So you don't have (and cannot) change the update frequency of these accounts: when a change occurs in the mail server -- a new mail arrives, a new contact is created, a new appointment gets added to your agenda... --, the mail server sends the update to your phone. It's not the phone who initiate the update: it's the mail server.
If you use POP or IMAP (Email accounts) to retrieve your mails, you can control the sync frequency. Contrary to a pushed protocol as described above, POP and IMAP are pulled mail protocols -- means: the phone has to initiate the sync process. It's the phone who contact the mail server to check if there are updates to download.
You can select the sync interval when you first add the Email account. To change the sync frequency for an already existing Email account:
Go to Settings and, under Accounts, select your Email account you want to modify;
Next, click on Settings to change the settings for this account;
Again, select your Email account in the list;
Scroll the settings and select Sync schedule;
You can now configure when should your emails for this account be synced. You can configure Peak schedule and Off-peak schedule to auto-sync between 15 min to once a day.

[REQ]Activesync incoming mail rule to fetch other accounts

It's great that googlesync allows true push email to the HD, but we're still restricted by WM 6.x to only one ActiveSync account.
But it occurred to em that we could use this to create pseudo multiple accounts. My idea is as follows:
Set up a GMAIL account.
Set up Activesync so that the new GMAIL account syncs with your Windows Mobile phone. It only needs to pull mail from "1 day" and with a 2Kb size limit as we are actually only interetsed in the header, not the mail itself.
Forward all incoming mail from other accounts at any provider to the new GMAIL account so they are pushed to the phone. Use the GMAIL "[email protected]" to set "marker" to identify the account that the original mail came from
Set up ordinary IMAP (or POP) accounts on the phone with the names of "marker". Set these accounts to "manually" retrieve mail i.e. no schedule.
Have an app on the phone that reads the incoming "pushed" mail from the activesync account, looks at the "marker" and uses that to trigger a "get mail" call for the appropriate account on the 'phone
Delete the original Activesynced email.
And just like that, every time a mail comes into any of the accounts, they are synced to the phone which then pulls them into the "correct" account from whence they can be replied etc. with all the correct email addresses.
Now I know that for you in the development world, this is an easy task. For me, I have a problem writing Step 5 above as I am not a Windows Mobile coder. Yes I could learn and in the spirit of XDA I probably should - but is there anyone else out there who would like to give this a go?
I'm posting a poll too so that potential developers can see if there's demand for this. Please vote if you think it would be a beneficial app.

How to set 2 Hotmail accounts?

I have two hotmail accounts that I want to sync at the same time, how do I add two at the same time, it wont allow me to do so.
Also if the above is not possible: since the hotmail account was the first one I entered, it wont allow me to delete it, I want to use the other hotmail account, but since this has been set as default, it's the only email I cannot delete from the list of emails I have added to my TP2 - So basically, how do I change default email address?
Seven might work, althought i've never tried to set up two e-mails with the same service via seven:

yes you can do it, however you would have to start from scratch...
you would have to start from scratch, by removing all email accounts from the device that are hotmail/live.com accounts...you shouldnt have to hard reset to accomplish this...
once thats accomplished, you need to set up your 1st hotmail account, but DO NOT use the windows live app to set it up. instead you need to use the "set up email" app and select "other" and follow the steps to set up your 1st account. make sure to give it a name other than hotmail.
once that is set up, then you can set up your 2nd hotmail account using the windows live app. follow the steps and you are all set
the only negative i can see is that the 1st account will not be "push email" but u can set your device to check every 5 min. the account set up through windows live can be set for push email.
hope that helps...

i'm using the stock tmo rom, if that makes a difference...
what you need to do is go to programs > setup email > other
that should allow you to set up your email...
How to setup 2 HOTMAIL accounts
Easy.
Start clean by deleting any mailboxes you've setup.
Once done, Start you 1st Hotmail account but instead of typing in [email protected], mis-spell it -such as [email protected].
(You bypass Windows LIVE taking over and can manually enter POP3/SMTP settings by doing this)
Follow the prompts and type the following for these settings
POP3 = pop3.live.com
SMTP = smtp.live.com
(check) Use same username/pw for sending email
Leave Advanced Server settings unchecked.
Continue the same steps for your 2nd HOTMAIL account.

Problem with default Email App

Hi all,
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 with the default Email client.
I have various email accounts, but want to set the syncing options (times, peak, off-peak) separately, but I seem to be unable to do this. The only one which is giving me options to set the syncing is the Hotmail one, which allows me to set separate peak and off-peak syncing, the rest only allow me to set syncing intervals.
My issue is that I have some accounts for which I need emails to come through 24 hours a day, and others that I only want during normal office hours, but (apart from the Hotmail account) I cannot set this up individually.
On my previous HTC I was able to set this up separately for each account, I assumed it was a standard Android Email app, but I guess I must have been wrong!
My question is, have I missed something in the settings?
If it's not possible, is there an email app that I can download that will allow individual sync settings per account?
Thanks in advance!

Gmail Push Notification

So I don't know if it's just my phone, but push notification of emails in Gmail does not work. There is not option in settings to have Push notification. It only lists never, every 15min, 30 min, hour, 4 hours, once a day... and even when I put it on every 15 minutes, it doesn't notify me when I have an email. I have to manually go in the Email app and refresh the email. My hotmail works great though and it has an option for Push. Did I set up the sync schedule wrong? I have peak schedule at every 15 min, off-peak at every 30 min, peak days selected for every day of the week, peak start time at 6:00am, peak end time at 2:00am and manual for while roaming. This is another concern of mine for this phone. My iphone did a great job of notifying me when emails came in.
Thanks!
Questions:
Under Settings -> Accounts and Sync ... Is sync set as on?
When you click on your gmail account name, it should give you a list of things to sync (mine has: calendar, contacts, gmail)
Is Gmail checked as on?

I can't seem to find what you're talking about. I'm pretty new to android. Would you happen telling me what settings to go to? Device settings? Email settings? I'm using the email app for gmail, not the gmail app since I have more than I email address.
Thanks
You'll have to set up your Gmail as a separate "Exchange ActiveSync" account to get proper Push.

That is so much better. Thank you so much!
Btw, you can use the Gmail app with multiple Gmail accounts. I use it for all of mine, and the email app for non-gmail accounts.

help with email app please!!!

i have searched all over google already..
So on my S3 i been using the stock email app. i have a hotmail account, same one for years. Every so often when i check my emails they automatically get deleted or disappear. So i log onto my hotmail.com or now "outlook" on my computer and all my emails that disappear move into a POP folder, thats why their not showing up on my phone. I have tried going to more options, and POP and deleting emails settings on my hotmail options.. changed it to what people suggest, and still the same thing happens. Its starting to really piss me off.
I have not tried k-9 email, i would like to use that as a final resort. i like the stock email app, i would just like someone to help me please with this, usually i can figure these things out but i have been banging my head on this for the past month now. Anyone else had this issue? what settings do i need to change on my phone? or on my hotmail account?
Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks!

Hi!
In Outlook.com, if you go to More mail settings -> POP and deleting downloaded messages, there are two options for POP syncing:
- Don't let another program delete messages from Outlook. (If your other program is set to "delete messages from the server," we'll simply move them to a special POP folder. They won't be deleted.)
- Do what my other program says—if it says to delete messages, then delete them.
Basically, this happens because POP3 is an unidirectionnal way to communicate between a mail client and a mail server. When the client connects to the server, the server sends all the mails he has to the client. Then the server waits for an instruction from the client: either to delete or not the messages the client has successfully received. As POP3 is unidirectionnal, it can't send a "delete" instruction to the server when you delete a message in your client: it's all or nothing. This was useful when storage space in mailboxes was limited -- when you have a local copy of your mails in your computer, then there is no need to keep a copy in the server, and it frees storage space --, but nowadays, most mailboxes have plenty of space, so there is no need to delete mails from the server.
The last option will obey to what your client send to your mail server: if your client tells the server to delete all the received mails, then Hotmail/Outlook.com will delete straightforward the said mails. On the other hand, the first option won't obey your client's instruction -- and if I'm correct, that's the default configuration in Outlook.com; instead of deleting the mails, Hotmail/Outlook.com will simply move them to a special "POP" folder for you to manually decide later what to do with them in your webmail.
Having those informations, you then may want to check what are your actual Email app's configuration about received mails and selecting your prefered option in Outlook.com. But I believe there is a better option for mail syncing.
What I may suggest you is to add your Hotmail/Outlook.com email account as an Exchange ActiveSync account, instead of a classic POP3 account. This way, you have bi-directionnal communication with your mail account -- a per-mail control of your emails --, push notifications -- you will receive mails as they arrive in your inbox --, access to all your email folders -- you are not limited to your inbox only -- and you can sync your contacts' informations in your Android address book with the infos from your email account.
To do that:
1. Open your Email app in Android;
2. Go to Settings;
(2.2 Optional -- You may want to delete your actual Hotmail/Outlook.com account from the app. It's not necessary, and you may want to do it only at the end of this procedure, when you see your Exchange setup working.)
3. In Settings, add a new email account;
4. Enter your Hotmail/Outlook.com email address in the account field and your password in the password field. Then, press Manual setup;
5. Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync type account;
6. Click Next -- there is no need to change the default settings;
7. At the Account options screen, again, no real need to change anything, though you *may* want to change Period to sync Email to access older emails. Then, click Next;
8. Type a name for your email account to appear in Email app, then you're done!
