Hi folks,
I thought this phone had like 500MB odd for apps storage?
I've just checked my space left on internal memory and its like 18MB.... thought this is strange.
Installed Linda File Manager, under Applications it says 133M / 147M - 90%
A big WTF???? What is going on here????
This is what I expected with my Hero, but the Desire? Something has to be wrong.
Where do you think Android OS resides? it takes most of the space.
the allowable rom for apps is a little above 100MB

Arf!!! Thought it would be more than that. Sheesh!!!
I have 150MB spare on my Hero.
I don't see a problem here. When I was still on G1, I had 256 MB partition for APPS2SD and I never went over 100 MB.
Of course, that depends on everyone's personal use case.

I believe this is wrong although I've had very busy weekend and had no time to look into it.
I think android OS in the 512MB ROM. I think the reason the RAM is nearly full from the word go is that it is full of Sence UI and the apps that HTC has installed. Most of these can't be uninstalled, yet.
I'm confused: are we talking about ROM - where Android OS, Sense UI, apps, etc are stored, or RAM - "working" memory?
I also have ~100+ MB of RAM left and I totally forgot that total amount is over 500 MB.
But then coming back to G1, it had 192 MB of RAM and I never had more than 30 free.
So basically the Rom, Sense UI, and all the HTC apps / widgets take up 350MB?
Wtf!! Way to go HTC, tout 512MB rom and then leave you with 150MB.
Can't wait to root this phone now.
Let's hope Android 2.2 or 3.0 supports Apps on SD and HTC will port it.
~100Mb Free Space only with preinstalled HTC Apps and Android is not very much
seems like i dont understand something
is it not possible to install the apps onto a memory card?! does rooting allow to do that?

No you have definitely misunderstood.
The ROM is 512MB
The RAM is 576MB
Android is in the ROM You don't have access to the ROM through any file explorer (may be possible once rooted). It wont be long before the device is rooted (hopefully) and then custom ROMs can be used and it may even be possible to reduce the size of the ROM and increase the size of the RAM.
Sence UI and apps (HTC or otherwise) are in the RAM. Once we have root acccess it should be fairly easy to place apps on the SD card by using symbolic links to fool the OS into believing that an EXT2 partition on the SD card is the app storage on the phone ram. This is all still to come but I still have a 1.5GB EXT2 partition on my SD card from when it was in my G1 which I will use for this purpose once root has been achieved (you will probably need to create one, I'm not going into detail about how to do this until the device has been rooted)

Ok .. i was about to preorder Desire for myself.. but this thing holds me back a lil now.. whats the point having alot of apps in the market while u can install about 3-5 apps on your phone coz of pathetic storage space..? sure once theres a chance to root your device u can get rid of this thing.. but what about ppl which wont root their device.. as im still not sure about root aswell..
PS: i always had just WinMo devices.. and im sick of it already.. especially after i saw WP7 i hate MS.. so android is the only way for me.. have to learn alot about this OS .. dont have it yet.. but already love it..

With over 100Mb Free Space you should be able to install at least 30-50 Apps (or at least 10Games). Most Apps are <1Mbyte. (Biggest Software i know is Copilot takes ~ 10Mbytes)
Don't think that you get serious problems here.
Ok that sounds quite fair.. but still.. well im App/game maniac

I agree there, you can't save apps on it, you can't install apps on it, so what the heck is benefit of having it in ur phone then, why Google won't give this feature/option 2 install on MemCard?
Or why the heck they don't make phones memory any bigger so that we don't have 2 worry about it.. I mean if they raise built-in memory to 1GB or big it's not gonna bring the price of phone 2 double, I guess it's gonna be only few quids more...

Do we really need to clean it periodically?
It would be nice if there is a widget to clean this.
And honestly, I am not impressed with the storage ... 512 RAM seems a lot, but actually it is NOT
I have removed Google earth as it was taking up nearly 22MB which in the grand scheme of things seems to be load of space....
I never understand why they don't a minimum of 1gb internal storage on these devices for apps.

...or just allow for apps to be installed on a memory card from the first place
Seems like that they [Android OS] have realised that without doing so, they will not be able to have storage hungry things such as games to be installed.
36 as I counted, is normal IMO. But yeah, I really hope that you will be able to install applications on your SD card in the future. Not that I want more apps, but I want BETTER apps (which means they will be more MB's). I remember downloading games for the iPod touch that were over 100 MB. They were also off very high quality.
About not allowing installing apps to SD card: I think the reason why it is not allowed is the following.. if you can install something to your SD card, you can easily share it with other over the internet, right? That will mean people will start downloading apps the 'dirty' way! That's the only reason I see.
But Google is very smart and so far keeps giving everybody what they want. I am sure they will find a solution!

When you use apps, it stores some files in memory for quicker access later. Downside of it is that it takes-up space. Normally you would not want to clear cache that often, but if you're running out of space it helps.
Unfortunately you can only clear cache for each app one-by-one, but here's an app that might make the process easier http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.cerisierbleu.qac
You can not store any apps on your memory card!

Is there no way to put it on your memory card?

No, you can't put apps on memory card until we have root and get to use cool ROMs like CyanogenMod.
Or until Google adds official support for apps2sd, but I can bet you that root will come first.
the reason why google doesnt allow apps etc to be installed on SD cards is because of security of the system, meaning that through this it would be probably easier to root or hack the device and they re working on some kind of encryption for this, and it will be included in the future update,
someone from this forum posted it somewhere here in this section
I also got low memory on my G1 with Apps2sd. That's because every app stores stuff on the internal memory, the browser cache, google maps cache and so on. My experience showed me that these things are the real memory killer.

Google will encrypt that partition of the sdcard so it is secure. IIRC, support for something with the sd card was checked in recently, along with the support for the LED (for the nexus one). I imagine apps2sd is something all android devices will be seeing soon.
Personally, I would be screwed if I couldn't install apps to my sd card on my phone...as stated above, google earth takes up way too much space. Tack on a couple games and a dozen apps? Forget it.

right. does that mean we wont be able to replace the sd cards unless we 'install' some additional files onto it?
and I think if google wont do this pretty quickly, droid might loose a vast amount of clients, because this is one of the reasons why iphone is so popular.

I thought it was due to the fact that the paid apps wouldn't be secure on the sd card, opening the gate further for app piracy and thus they were working on a solution to allow copy protection on the sd card.
I think this issue just turned me off the Desire and now I'm leaning towards the Nexus 1. I like to install plenty of apps so this could be a real issue for me
All android phones are the same, its just a matter of time before its sorted you can still get plenty of apps on, personally i can't see how anyone would need more than 10.

not sure to be honest. I would assume that you will be able to mount your sd card and copy all of the contents off the secured/encrypted partition if your machine recognizes that partition type...then again, maybe you won't be able to.
If you upgrade sd cards, you may have to start all over with installing to the sd card. Good question.

the iphone is popular for lots of reasons; app support being at the top...but I would imagine the viral advertising and the "everyone has it" thing doesn't hurt.
Funnily enough, Android is almost on as many mobile devices as iphoneOS (according to an admob metric report). So the "everyone has it" argument is about to become a moot point.

Also if you were installing the apps while the phone was connected to the PC it may have dismounted your SD card and installed everything on the phone memory?? Just a guess.

Can you share with us how do you manage to install apps on sdcard ?
the phone is superb much better than iphone imho but just makes me angry having to factory reset every time i run out off memory hopefully gets sorted soon
Yea okay this is really annoying me now, i barely have any apps on my device besides google maps, facebook, aircontrol etc all under a couple of mb. I install raging thunder 2 which takes up more than 20mb of my internal storage and that's it, don't have room for anything else. This is REALLY stupid.
It is a massive issue for me as its a really great device, but you can only install a few apps at a time??? WTF????
It would be nice to install more than 1 3d game......
I noticed the same thing as the guys above. Can someone tell us how to install the APPs on the SD card that's in the phone??
From what I understand, apps2sd requires root access, which requires a root ;-)
funny or not, but i had more free mem to install aps on my old nokia e50 phone and all this talk about this issue here or basically on the net, it's just bad pr for google/andorid platform.
it's a lame limitation that at the end will be removed by google itself or by rooting the phone.
and for now... install astro file manager and backup unused apps on sd card. thanks to that you can have some apps installed in phone memory, ready for quick use, and many more backed up on sd card available with few clicks.

Maybe a mass android users petition or something to google?
seems to me the only major downfall of this otherwise amazing device
It seems like there's literally no internal storage. Does anyone know exactly how much it is? I have about 10 mb of email, 15 mb of Facebook data, 20 mb of contact storage, and about 5-6 applications installed that are over 1 mb, and somehow the little "Low Space" notification keeps popping up. I already uninstalled so many apps and right now I'm down to the essentials plus 2 games. It's annoying and I don't understand why the internal storage is so low that you can't even install more than 2 apps without it going crazy. My Hero never had this problem and I have 20-30 apps installed on there plus 3 email accounts and I never once saw the "Low Space" notification.
App2SD? Clear cache?
So, youre complaining about an issue that everyone on any Android has if they havent rooted?
Upgrade to Froyo
Move Apllication´s to SD
be happy
It's the biggest problem on all android phones. It's being fixed (if you have group 2.2 youll notice an improvement). But the best solution so far seems to be root. Read into it, and Google things like apps2sd.

Problem is, at least in my case, most of the apps just don't support installing in SD, like Google maps, Adobe reader, Gmail or even YouTube apps. No use of being in Froyo then.

No no, please don't give Apple credit, Iphone have loads more internal memory than any android device which relies on "external" SD storage. If iphones worked the same way, this limitation would be advertised as a freaking "feature"
Ok so we shouldn't HAVE to do it, but I fully understand Google taking time to think things out. Just plainly installing on the SDcard (i.e. copying apk packages) with no piracy preventing measures is not viable. The froyo way is already a nice step forward. If you want full control, well at least you DO get the opportunity to take full control of your phone through rooting and apps2sd.
Please don't compare to iphone which still doesn't even know what file browsing is
That's what I meant about the iPhone doing it, Apple got it right by cramming the iPhone with internal memory!!! HTC could've easily done the same
Agree with the 'feature' pun, though
Hm, even in my unrooted, old 2.1 days i had more than a few apps installed. 20 MB of Contacts?? How many do you have... a million?
Sorry, even without app2sd i had 30+ apps installed.
Btw, rooting is so easy... Right now i have about 50 apps installed and 105 MB free space.
Hey dude,
I wouldn't advise just rooting your phone on the spur, research it first...
Also upgrade to Froyo, then you get to trnsfer your apps, if thats not enough then download App2sd and if thats not enough then clear cache and if thats not enough delete some apps that you never really use.
Finally IF thats not enough, sell your phone and buy something else...

Totally agree that you shouldn't just root without understanding the whole process and what it means. I was troubleshooting two other users that nearly bricked their Desires by rooting improperly.
But back to the OP's comments, I was like him. I rooted because I was running out of space to install apps
same here i struggled with performance when my internal got full even with force 2 SD
i finally gave up and rooted my device, never looked back
a reminder: if you want to root and install a2sd make sure it's done with a full wipe

Dya know what gets to me? Idiots that spend hundreds of pounds on a device without even researching the device specification, only to end up creating pointless threads, not because there is anything wrong with the device just because they didnt educate themselves about what they were about to buy, any google search will show the desire has a total rom of 500mb, knowing that the system, cache, radio and recovery partitions were going to take a sizeable chunk of that, i fully expected about 150mb of internal storage so i wasnt disapointed

Well that was a fail of a statement. It sucks because of no micro SD card...I'd rather have internal memory as it's quicker to access anyway. One reason why HD videos on the iPhone are so good. But in the end they are both phones nothing to argue over. Both have good and bad points it's all opinion.

A data2sd rom would be an option or link2sd. Look at the Index thread, there is a link2sd tutorial at the general guide section.
Will see if I can get the phone off her for a few days and give it a tweaking..
Moved the apps that would let me to the SDCard, its out of space again though, something wrong here surely, I know its a cheap device but really, this sucks balls..
Did you "get" more space?
Hi Trig0r,
I have that phone and the problem is that they took too much of the RAM for system files and other junk apps. Its supposed to have 500MB of ram, but we are only allowed about 120MB to install apss.. I rooted my phone and got about 40MB more of memory. Good luck getting space for your friend's phone.

best bet is to root and install link2sd if possible. i've done this on VM USA, and after removing the crap apps that came on the phone, i have almost 60 apps installed and have 43.08mb free on internal.
Back on this phone again, its running
2.3.3
2.1
1.33.206.5
Gonna see if I can have it for a few days.
Got it now, ota'd to 2.3.5 still sucks balls, gonna drop a custom on it if I can get an unlocked bootloader..

Hi Trig0r,
I have that phone and the problem is that they took too much of the RAM for system files and other junk apps. Its supposed to have 500MB of ram, but we are only allowed about 120MB to install apss.. I rooted my phone and got about 40MB more of memory. Good luck getting space for your friend's phone.

ROM, not RAM...
I have the exact same problem on stock...can you please tell me the most stable sense rom with link2sd built in?
I have had HTC Desire for 2 years now and I am planning to buy this phone in couple of weeks. I have few questions if someone could answer them for me.
1. How is the loud speaker feature? Is it better than the Desire?
2. Out of 32GB memory, how much is available after all the preloaded system apps?
3. Since there is no SD slot, how an individual would transfer the data from PC to the phone? can an individual use a USB cable and place them in designated folder of the phone?

1. (My last phone was a Desire) The speaker is A LOT better, it sounds even better then the speakers in my laptop.
2. 25GB left. (+ You get 25 GB free with Dropbox, which you can use for your documents, photos, video)
3. Through Dropbox is the easiest way, you get 25 GB free storage which makes transfering files very easy to do. (And if 25 isn't enouf you can always buy more/also use Box which offers another free 50 GB.) USB transfer also works, but believe me once you get used to Dropbox you don't want anything els. When I take a picture on my phone it is a few seconds later already on my Dropbox account available for all my other devices.
Thanks.

I saw in a review that only 2GB is available for installing apps. Is this going to be a problem? The only thing I really disliked about my Desire was the dramatically limited space for apps and I don't really want to fall into that again.

Can someone confirm this if only 2GB is available for installing apps?

I should have said that indeed, there is 2GB dedicated for installing apps but you can move pretty much any app to the "SD CARD" which has 25 GB of storage. My apologies for the confusing answer the first time.
PS : Keep in mind that within the 6 months pretty much all apps will be optimised for "Move to SD-Card".
PS2: Since all the storage is located on one physical storage unit (as far as I know?) I think devs might be able to make the 2GB partition a 10 (or any number) GB partition. But you better ask this to a real developper.

Call me paranoid but after the Desire I am a bit wary of moving apps to sd being some magical fix. It didn't seem to help me that much when I was HTC stock (pre root and roming). I thought the point of Android switching to MTP was to make all the space available for apps.

Yeah I had that same problem with the Desire, some apps didn't work after moving them to SD. But I think app-devs will start optimizing this, apps become larger and pretty much every phone has very limited memory (without the SD-Card).
+ I'm pretty sure Devs can make the 2GB partition larger, if you root the device and use a costum rom that is.
