As some devs are aware there are those of us who need 3G disabled on Android for our devices. Using the option to "Only Use 2G Networks" does not resolve this. (edit: also, neither does the *#*#INFO#*#*)
I thought it might be helpful to create a thread about it so that if anyone comes up with a solution or if a particular rom build can address this issue (I'm not an expert but it seems like it will have to be a rom based fix? which is why this isn't in software development) there's a place for it.
I use AT&T and have validated my APN settings and tried all manner of selecting the "use only 2g" option (restarting, manually selecting networks, automatically selecting networks, etc.) but it always goes back to 3G.
This can be disabled as if I disable 3G through WinMO it works and HaRET seems to behave when I use it that way (I still select 2g only though).
Personally I use HardSPL 3.56 and Radio 1.71.09.01.
Please help us out Perhaps we could start a bounty -- I'd like to start with $10 for a validated fix.
If someone would be willing to walk me through a build process for their rom perhaps I can test/fumble through C myself and create a "patch" or something that can be applied to other builds. Please feel free to PM me if you can do that and I'll keep any information on this thread.
Thanks for reading this and any help you can provide or direction you can point me in! This is a great community!

As reported by Softec 2G/3G switching is working for Polaris (Pola100) using KaiserDroid 2.0
http://www.homecncfun.com/kaiserdroid/
Thank you slm4996!
I am trying to use KaiserDroid 2.0 on my Kaiser (Kais160) but thus far haven't gotten data to work. Stay tuned.
Hi
Thanks for starting this thread I am using the same phone (kaiser 130) same hard spl 3.34 and same radio.
I too live in an area where I need to disable 3g to have a usable phone, and have found the same - disable in Windows Mobile and load via haret and then android never tries 3g.
I like the idea of the reward, I'll match your $10 so that makes a $20 bounty on this one, I can test for anyone if they're trying to fix it.
There's a few different ways to accomplish this. All do the same thing but some may be easier for you to do based on your experience. I don't know if the ROMs need to be rooted but given that these are ports you should have no issues with that. You can search through my posts, the various threads or PM me if you need help with that.
Basically you are going to corrupt the (going off of memory here) /etc/apn-config.xml file to point to nonexistent APNs. You don't need to do both of these, these are just different ways to do this:
1.) Download Droidsans Tweaks Lite from Market (free) and you can use it to disable the APN, or you can just to to the APN settings and change the APN name
2.) Download APNdroid (free) and toggle connectivity
There's other ways, but giving you two options should be enough. If you are good enough at messing with ROMs, you can always just delete the apn-config.xml (or whatever it's called) in /etc (which is in the rootfs.img) and it will never connect.
I don't think these 2 actually turn off 3g just the data, my problem is the 3g signal is too weak to be reliable so I need to force 2g completely, not just disable the apn
then can't you just get one of the various (curvefish for example) widgets to toggle 2G/3G or go to settings and say 2G only?
Currently only via Haret

Well the only thing I can suggest is via haret.
1. Via windows goto com manager and disable 3g, and confirm that you have edge showing and connected.
2. Boot haret and you will be limited to edge.
short and sweet.....
the speed is decent enough for me to consider a nexus or desire on ATT's 850 mhz HSDPA/4g

ps. I hope your thread pushes for a solution via nand b/c its important.

Sorry n the dsiabling 3g when runing android does not work on the kaiser from our experience, the widget is just a shortcut to the menu.
As noted in post 7 and I tught above the only soluton is to run via haret and. Disable it in windows mobile to re-enable reboot the phone and enable in windows then run haret again.
Can we change the thread to - Android via Nand on Kaiser Disable 3g solution required or something clearer
I would love to be able to run via nand
I have this problem too, i can't disable the 3G signal, i think this problem is only in Kaiser.
i like if someone can "fix" this for us.
Thank you guys for the suggestions. HaRET does work if the WinMO ROM hosting can disable 3G (which most have a switch or something).
I have googled for some time searching for a toggle/switch that disables 3G but as mentioned have only found ones that point to the menu rather than actually disable 3G.
As mentioned the menu does not work.
There's a $20 combined bounty on this already! Please help us out!!
Newest KaiserDroid
I am using a new RIL in KaiserDroid 2.0, have you tried it yet?

If it works I can backport it to older roms till this one is more complete. Thank you for all you feedback on the KaiserDroid thread.
I'll give it a try and let you know...

You're welcome. Do you want to keep using 2.0 or should I backport it for you?
Thus far with KaiserDroid 2.0 I haven't been able to get any data to work. I didn't test making/receiving phonecalls. I plan on posting thoroughly soon but I want to play with it some more (perhaps I've done something ignorant, haha )
I've been using HaRET to test and left my MicroSD at home today will have to try more later this evening. I will also check out KaiserDroid 1.1.

Try this update package, it fixes some of the APN's and adds a few more:

(this is just an update, put it in your andboot folder and enter the install menu, choose "apply update" then quit)

Hello, it would be nice to have the opportunity to try different rom, can you tell us what to do if you would be very grateful.
For your rom I noticed that it is a bit slow, the data in WiFi will not work and above all the bateria takes very little.
Charged 100% no WiFi and only a few calls, it was switched off after 6 hours.
I tried the version 2.0, now I have downloaded version 2.1. Test and let you know.
Thank you very much.

Please read the thread for the rom you use!! These are all known issues with all ROMs flashed to NAND and to some extent under HaRET. the appropriate fixes and/or workaround have been posted in the thread. I am working a howto to back port the RIL but if you start poking around in the sysinit.rc it should be fairly obvious what files you need.
keep in mind that KaiserDroid 2.0/2.1 are ALPHA release and as such contain bugs.
Hello slm4996, it was not my intension held high controversy, I just wanted to clear up why do not I was using your rom and use the 3G off on another rom.
I looked at the file sysinit.rc as you recommended and I changed the line:
service ril-daemon /system/bin/rild -l /system/lib/libhtcgeneric-ril.so -- -d /dev/smd0
with
service ril-daemon /system/bin/rild
Then I replaced the file /system/bin/Rild from your new rom and it worked perfectly.
I can make and receive calls on 2G without problem. I have not tried the APN but I'll try to short
thank you very much.

Hey!
So I upgraded to WM6 using Schapps' rom. So far so good, but I am really missing my connect / disconnect options from WM5 in the Today icons at the top of the screen. All they give me now is an option to go to the wireless manager.
How do I restore this much needed functionality? For example, when I launch IE or Opera by 3G / GPRS and then close the browser, I stay connected (with a little timer in the bubble). How come this no longer auto-disconnects? Also there is no option to force a disconnection from within the bubble.
Use shadowmite's tweak tool, this is a reg hack.
http://shadowmite.com/wiki/index.php/HTCustom
Hi, thanks for that, but I've got Schapps' Advanced Configuration tool in his ROM, which appears to closely resemble this. But there is nothing about the wifi balloon, nor is there anything about making 3G / GPRS auto-disconnecting. The "3G and GPRS disconnect and timer" option doesn't seem to work.
Edit: I don't really understand; why are reg hacks even needed to restore functionality that was in the previous version of WM? It seems like things are going backwards!!!

Those functions were unlocked using the exact same reg hack by carriers. They are disabled by default on all ROMs afaik.
Hi, I'll give the tweak tool a go once I get home. However I certainly did not have a countdown timer for 3G / GPRS when I had WM5. Is there no way to have an auto-disconnnect?
Also the tweak tool doesn't mention anything about the wifi balloon?
I know it's bad form to reply to one's own post, but just to crystallise this:
Why has my Wifi and 3G "Connnect / Disconnect" options in the icons at the top of the today screen (on the title bar), been replaced with a link saying, "wireless manager"?
And how do I get them back?
Okay looks like I may have found a solution. Please tell me the below is possible in WM6?

maybe this should help you

- but, I don´t know exactly why - for me it´s not working on Schaps c version - but could be only a problem of the german release.
Let me know if it works for you...
I changed back to Elf´s rom - this is the on that satisfies me most until now, btw. the bubblefix works prfectly on that one.
I've updated my Hermes with latest LVSW ROM release, which I am quite happy about, besides HSDPA issue. I've checked the thread, but it got sooo loong already, that it is pretty hard to find anything useful information out there, besides the fact that there actually *is* HSDPA problem with that ROM.
So, I have just one, plain question and I'm hoping to get plain answer - is there any straightforward fix for that HSDPA issue (like additional .cab file to be installed), or do we need actually wait for the next ROM release and do full update then?
And please, let's not make another drama out of this topic, with conspiracy theories 'differences between WWE and RUS versions, and why is that' and stuff like that. Just plain answers please, which will benefit to all those who are actually interested in that. Thanks.

it appears the rimgsm.dll has issues in the 17745 RTM release from HTC... hence was replaced in "some" ROMs... not lsvw...
I have 3.30.2.1 LVSW based. What is the HSDPA issue? My issue is the phone needs rebooted to connect to the internet. Also, the wifi kind of stinks when you have 10 access points near you. I had these exact issues on the forst few WM5 ROMs i used for my 8125. Deja Vu

It concerns only the very latest 3.30.3.3 version. Basically, HSDPA support is broken in that ROM version. In fact, when phone is in 3G mode, network speeds are just like GPRS (~50-60 kbps). Besides that, ROM is just perfect...
I get 980k on LVSW baseed ROM. I use Cingular in USA DC. I got the vp3G's take on LVSW 05-19 3.30.2.1 [CINGULAR-optimized] ROM working. I have to reboot everyonce and awhile when I switch proxy and no proxy on my 3G connections and turn on/off the Internet Sharing with a laptop.
HSDPA bug
Hi,
I'm not running this rom, but I looked at it and compared it to austinsync's fixed version. In addition to replacing the rilgsm.dll file, he changed and deleted other stuff, most of which doesn't relate to this issue. I've been wondering if just replacing the rilgsm.dll file would fix the problem, so for those of you that want to try, I'm attaching the "working" version that austinsync used. Try copying it into your /windows directory, overwriting the one that's there (you may need to use total commander to overwrite the system file, I forget), then do a soft reboot. Worth a try!
Best wishes,
Just make sure to back up your original. After I added this file -- the phone will not turn on. The handset boots and all is well, but the radio will not work.

Ouch! Sorry about that.
You could try just deleting the file and a soft reboot. It should "re-expose" the original file.
Best wishes,
just replacing the rilgsm.dll will not fix it! your radio will not work if you do so. I would recommend using my release that has this issue fixed or another such as the one slueth came out with today but its based off another build. link the my fixed rom is in my sig.
That's based off other builds actually. Consider it a "Best of WM6" compilation. Even though my core CE/HAL is from the Hermes RTM build, HSDPA connectivity actually comes from the mun_rus imgfs core labeled CE 5.2.1413 and may have some universal components. This one had the least bugs and best thruput when coupled with radio v1.40 and >

I tried both yours (Sleuth) and Austinsync's ROMs but none worked for HSDPA. I tried reverting to an older ROM which I used before with HSDPA.. and it is ALSO NOT WORKING! :O :O
Is this thing some sort of non-downgradeable horror from space? It is present even after flashing to an OLD ROM!
Does it survive because it came from a more recent build of WM6?
Maybe most of you dont really care about that bug so much, but I actually depend on HSDPA.
Is there a FIX? ANY FIX!? I dont care to go back to an old ROM! How can I completely annihilate my phone's ROM and install from scratch?
Did you see the "H" icon displayed when you tried HSDPA on my ROM? If so, then the pipe to the towers was 700K - 1meg. What occurs after that is dependent on your carrier's network. In fact, I would suspect this, not your ROM, if downgrading caused no difference.
When downgrading, you removed everything: no settings can linger between hard resets. Since your problem still occurred, I'd say its something to do with your carrier. Or.... you are running a non HSDPA capable radio. Check the wiki for how to determine this.

Seriously, HSPDA is working great for me on sleuth's rom, and actually all the new roms (except LVSW's). Maybe there was a service problem in your area lately? Also, double check your carrier settings.
I also think it would be nice if someone could come up with a fix short of rebuilding the rom as austinsync has, or just fix that one issue and leave everything else alone.

Did you upgrade to a broken HSDPA rom before using Sleuth's? If not, then it is obvious that your phone wouldnt be infected.
It is NOT my carrier. I was using HSDPA until my phone turned off for ROM upgrade. Then after the upgrade was complete, HSDPA wouldnt come back.

Ive tried radio 1.40.30 which is tested and proven in the past.
Oh and NOT everything is gone when you flash. Sometimes, I still have a previous ROM's flash screen when booting up (like now i got your ROM, but i still see Black Dymond's screen at boot). The radio doesnt disapear either.
Wouldnt it be possible for something to get stuck as well? Especially when it is radio related.
Hi Alkizmo,
Sorry if I seemed flip. I have heard horror stories of bad flashes, etc.. In Wizard land where I come from, the advice is often given to downgrade to a stock carrier rom before reflashing a new rom. In my own experience this has only been useful for me once out of many dozens of flashes. I would expect sleuth has flashed hundreds if not thousands of times. My experience is that a flash wipes out everything related to that flash, i.e. an os flash wipes out the os, a splash screen flash wipes out the splash, a radio flash wipes out the radio. Try reflashing with another rom that includes "extended_rom", this will reset everything, then try again. If you need to you can downgrade to your original carrier rom. (Check the threads for downgrading, I haven't had to do it on a Hermes yet.) Again, I have tried all the recent roms, and HSPDA works well with all of them except the one this thread is about. I am getting about 900k with sleuths rom here in the NYC area.
Good luck!
I understand that you don't want to recommend something that might brick my phone.
However, contrary to common thinking, there ARE things that get passed on from flash to flash (hence the flash screen not changing).
Now onto the matter of HSDPA :
I've managed to get HSDPA signal, but only by changing location. Weird thing is, I've got HSDPA in my apartment before, now I dont anymore unless I walk away to some place around.
My signal is STRONG on 3G yet no HSDPA.
Ok, at least I can go back to the new ROMs that I liked and figure out how to get better signal to acquire HSDPA.
I recently updated my rom to Miri's WM6.5 21869, from my default WM 6, and, the internet is just horrible. Youtube, takes as long as dialup to load, searching for images, it takes a good 30 seconds to a minute to load a page of results, and it's just all bull. On my default rom i would have 4 minute youtube vids downloaded in 30 seconds, image results in 3-5 seconds.
Any idea what i can do to help this? I want to keep wm6.5, not necessarily miri's wm6.5 so if you know of another ROM that is gprs/3g speedy then by all means point me in the right direction.
Im with optus prepaid, and my orginal rom was an unlocked telstra one.
Also I've heard that a newer radio version makes a difference, although i have not been able to navigate my way to an upgrade link. current version is 1.14......
A correct solution will receive a donation, for enough to buy a 6 pack of beer (if you use paypal)
Cheers.

Did you check if the phone might be set to only use GPRS for data services? Head to the settings tab, hit "Communications" and see if there is an option called "3G"! It has to be set to "auto" mode! If it's set to GSM, it will only use GPRS which is slooooooooooow.
And if that is in fact the solution, don't donate the money to me but to xda-developers!
Still no luck I didn't have an auto mode but i switched it to ON haha, but unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference in download speed

With a G it's no wonder it's so slow... It's like a 56K modem!!!
When you set up the new ROM, did it recognize the carrier and run through the carrier specific configuration thingie after flashing?
Maybe there is something misconfigured so it won't use HSDPA even if it's available... Could you go to Settings -> Connections -> Connections and tell me what kind of connections are listed there?
Also, check the following: Settings -> Connections -> Advanced Network
In the drop down list, what does it say? It shouldn't be set to "Disable"!
I've been reading myself silly trying to figure this out & my attempts at Searching haven't helped, probably because I'm not fluent enough to use the correct terms. In spite of having this device for several months, I've never learned as much as I'd like. Anyway . . .
I finally flashed the newest stock ROM from HTC several days ago. The process seemed to go fine with one exception: I keep getting a notification that I have a new Voicemail when I don't. I check -- no new Voicemail. I Dismiss, but the the notification keeps coming back periodically. Suggestions?
Other than that, things seemed to go smoothly, and I started slowly getting things back the way I like them. After reading & making sure I understood (or so I thought), I installed the .NET 3.5 Framework so I could use Crud Scraper to get rid of the stuff I clearly remembered using it for.
The .NET part went fine, and then I did the soft reset . . . and lost My Location on the Today screen that shows my weather. It now says I'm in Seattle, which I'm not -- I'm over a mountain range & about 350 miles east of Seattle. When I try to change the location, it doesn't find my town or anything in my area, for that matter..
The mysteriously (to me) reappearing Voicemail Notification is bad enough, but I really rely on the weather, particularly this time of year, and it's driving me crazy that I can't figure this out. Suggestions?
TIA
Did you try looking at the several threads on this ROM in the Rom Development forum? There's a fix in one of them for this problem.
For which problem? And, do you have any idea what thread?
And, yes, I did look in the thread I found (New ATT Tilt2 ROM) -- I believe I read every post before I flashed the latest ROM, even though much of it was over my head. That's where I learned that I had to install .NET 3.5 & reboot before CrudScraper would work.
I recall several people mentioning that the My Location worked flawlessly & how great it was having the location, and I read where one or two people seemed to be having the same weather problem I'm having, but I didn't see an answer. I read in one of the forums that there seems to be a bug (although not confined to the latest ROM) in certain parts of the world, and I read a thread where there seemed to by a problem with My Location in a cooked ROM that might or might not have been related to GPS not working. I read something else where My Location wouldn't work with 3G, only with Wi-Fi, so I tried that, even though My Location was working just fine after I flashed to the latest ROM -- that didn't help.
So, it's not like I'm asking because I hadn't already tried to find solutions myself. I'm not doubting that there are answers to both of my issues but rather that after spending several hours over the weekend trying to find the solutions, I've been miserably unsuccessful. Otherwise, I wouldn't have asked.

For the My Location feature, only part of the service is understood. For the most part, the location is determined by the cell towers your device connects to. It depends on where you are as well as the signal strength. Sometimes the request is not sent or received to/from the tower(s). It is more accurate usually when 3G is turned off. The alternative is to add your city manually. If the location servers can't figure out where you are, then it won't work.
Normally the stock ROMs fix this and work wonderfully after flashing. The best solution to this is to turn off 3G to get a fix or find your city manually.

I'm feeling really stupid here, but being a glutton for punishment, I'll keep trying.
Is it possible that maybe there was something wrong with the towers here that just happened to coincide with the soft reboot after installing .NET? The reason I ask is that My Location is now correct. Yay! That would be just my luck: bad timing.
Any suggestions about the incorrect Voice Mail notification? It for sure comes back each time I power up the phone. It seems to me it also reappears at other times, but I'm not positive about that -- I'm going to try to pay better attention.

Make sure to install .NET CF 3.5 to the device and not the storage card. You'll then need to restart, if it doesn't ask you to do so. You then need to force it to use 3.5 over 2.0. Use a registry editor and navigate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/.NETCompactFramework. Change the DWORD data of entry 2.0.7045.00 from 1 to 0. Then change the DWORD data of entry 3.5.7283.00 from 0 to 1 and then reset. This disables 2.0 and enables 3.5.
For a decent registry editor that can be used from the PC side, check out CERegEditor if you don't already have an editor of choice.
For the voicemail problem, there are two known solutions. You can either have someone call and leave you a voicemail. You would then check it and delete it. You can also simply call your provider and have them reset your voicemail account. Either one should work.
If neither of those options works for/appeals to you, you can give this a shot. There are no guarantees that it won't come back after a soft reset, though. Using a Registry editor, navigate to the following keys:
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line1\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line2\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Total\Unread
There should be a value name "Count" with a REG_DWORD value
Change value to 0 in decimal or 00 in Hex.
It should remove voicemail notification icon from the taskbar.

Many thanks! For the Voicemail, I used method one, and it worked
And, thanks for the instructions (and the reg edit program suggestion) to force use of .NET CF 3.5 because I missed that part -- yikes.
I'm on a dedicated mission to cut down on the elecronics I have to carry around, so I need to learn more about the features of the Tilt2 because if I can just figure things out (which I've not forced myself to do), the Tilt2 will, I think, be able to replace my PDA & iPhone.
Anyway, thanks again for your help!
Firstly I just want to say thank you to all the developers who are working hard on bringing us Android on our Touch Pro 2.
Basically I want to be able to use Android for the sole purpose of accessing "whatsapp," but whenever I go into the app and click on "accept" the user terms, it says it requires a mobile data network to access whatapp? I've tried this with wifi and 3g seperately and also with both of them combined. Have also tried a few different Android ports for the Rhodium and I get the same problem.
The strange thing is though is that this app worked with a kaiser port I was using before on my old phone.
Does anyone know of a solution? Thank you
Okay this is probably because I cant seem to get a 3g signal and only a gprs one. So instead, does anyone know a way to get 3g to work?
3G
3G works seems to work fine on just about every other rhodium out there. So it's probably something specific to your phone. What's your rhodium model#? What carrier's 3G are you trying to use it with? What android build are you using? What's the date of that build? And have you updated any of its components (kernel, rootfs, system.ext2, etc...) since?

Thanks for your response. I'm unsure how to check what model this is but it is an unbranded UK Touch Pro 2 and I'm using it on the Vodafone UK network. On the Android startup screen I select the "Rhod100_uk." So I'm hoping this is the correct one for my model.
The Radio is 4.49.25.91 and I'm currently running Jackos latest SkrobPRO rom.
The Android build is the: ProjectAndroid2.2Froyo (11.22.10) and I havn't updated any of its components to my knowledge. I've also tried several other builds and seem to have the same problem, but my 3G connection is fine in WinMo.
Any suggestions on what I should do?
Much appreciated

Your Rhodium model # can be found by popping off the battery cover, removing the battery and looking at what's written underneath.
I'd recommend that you update to the latest kernel, system.ext2 and rootfs. In particular, kernels built between 10/23 and 11/23 were known to have problems on Rhodium 100's which I suspect you may have.

Did you check all the settings (I mean APN and maybe user pass) for Voda UK, both in WinMo and in Android?
For example, default APN for my carrier is correct for consumer, not for business. Have to set it manually.

This is good advice. It's possible that there may be an issue with the default APN setting. fade1black101, you may also want to talk to snalbansed and ask him if he's experienced a similar problem. He's using a rhod100 UK with Voda too. Things seem to be working for him.
I'm usually not the paranoid type, but I wouldn't want all of my text messages going thru some shady third party...
What's the advantage of using this app? Sorry, just curious.
Ah, I see. More for smartphone-to-smartphone messaging if you don't have a txt plan. Move along, nothing to see here
Lol thanks for all the replies.. Hopefully it'll help someone else with a similar problem. However, the solution was far more simple than I expected. Basically all I did was download an app from the Android market called "Any Cut"... From there you make a "New Shortcut" using "Activity." Then you select phone info and scroll down to the drop down list towards the bottom and select "WCDMA only".
This worked for me and forced a 3G connection, and I was then able to access whatsapp!
