Hi anyone,
Ever since I upgraded to the official Verizon 6.1 ROM I've lost the built-in GPS on my xv600. I'm wondering, if I do a hard reset, and DO NOT let customizations run, then install Valhalla GPS which I have, will that do the trick? I don't want to wipe out the phone if this won't work. Thanks much.
I went to http://wiki.ppchaven.com/index.php?title=Pocket_PC_WIki:FIX_VERIZON_GPS based on a member's suggestion, but am wondering why I have to do a Sprint flash first and then Verizon???
Because whatever verizon seems to put in their customizations block the aGPS signal from working. Trust me, I've had my XV6900 for a year now and tried doing everything BUT flashing the phone to get it work and it never did, EXCEPT when you pay for VZ Navigator. Then for whatever reason it turns on. But if you don't keep it and turn it off it stops working.
I flashed for the first time this weekend and once I followed the instructions carefully it works. This is the second day that I get locks on aGPS with Google Maps. Read, read read the instructions on the stickys in this thread, the one that says *Updated Aug 8* and you'll get there.
Th eason is VZ sucks! hy locked on GPS from the getgo and you have to use another rom to unlock the GPS, namely Sprint, who offers it to their customers for free. So, the short story is, you have to flash to Sprint's rom to unlock the GPS, then flash to VZ official which is just a radio really, 3.37.78. DO NOT let customizations run, that will lock the GPS again. Takes time, but you will have GPS for 0.00 instead of 10/month. After all that, unlock it and flash to a custom rom you like.

Basically what they are having you do is flash back to a pre-GPS ROM. You could flash a Sprint, Alltel, or a Verizon ROM as long as it is pre-GPS.

It sounds like you really want to understand the process, and it was a little challenging for me to find those same kind of answers about the "why" of the process. There are many threads and tutorials but they don't all say exactly the same thing. So here is a bit that I learned that answered my questions. Verizon changed the PRI with the upgrade to WM 6.1. In my understanding it is like your computers BIOS and has instructions that tell it what hardware to look for, but if the instructions aren't there it won't know you have, for example, a chipset that can utilize a DVD drive and so it will only let you use a CD drive. Nothing will help until you change the BIOS or in this case the PRI. So the process of restoration utilizes old instruction sets that are actually complete. Verizon just didn't think you would want them since you could pay to use their "superior" Navigator. Once the PRI is restored to 1.37_002 you can install newer radios that have been released. You will need to actually flash your phone and you will lose data on the phone, but not on your SD card, so I would use this program to back up your contacts and other data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
Here are the 2 threads that helped me the most
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533639
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=78560
The flashing process is pretty similar in all tutorials. The one step to watch is how to stop Customizations from running. You need to have your stylus ready when windows boots after a flash... it will take you through screen alignment and a few questions like do you want to set a password, email account... then "tap to finish" windows will start and NOW you have to be ready to poke the reset hole. It will say customizations will start in 3 seconds for maybe 1 or 2 seconds with NO options to refuse, just the stylus to reset hole option NOW!
There are several other factors or steps involved in the process but these are well covered in the tutorials.
Read them both and feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
hey guys.
i just bought a used Evo from a local. he had the phone flashed by VFC Mobile so it would work on MetroPCS. i have it connected to the network and most things seem to be working fine.
however, I have some (many questions).
1) the phone is running 2.1 - should I consider upgrading to Froyo?
1a. - if I do, does the flashing over to MetroPCS get lost?
2) how do I know if my phone is rooted? (there is an app called #superuser but nothing happens when I start it?
3) if it is, how do i access the adb I keep seeing in instructions to install bootscreens and such?
4) BIGGEST ISSUE HERE: the previous owner of the phone had his gmail account on the phone. until I moved the account over to mine, I was able to use android market. now that the phone is moved over to my account, i can't use android market and i keep getting a message that his gmail account can't log in. i can't seem to remove his account, even though I already added mine.
is there a way (easy or hard) to make my account be the default account?
according to the phone I have to do a full factory reset but then wouldn't I lose the network flash?
5) when researching flashing the phone, i had read there were some problems with MMS. my sister sent me several MMS and none of them arrived. my wife sent me one and it arrived. is this a problem with the MMS part of the flash or something else? can it be fixed?
i have CDMA workshop and not afraid to try things. so shoot any solutions/suggestions to the above questions, or anything else in general i should know (i like modifying my phones so don't be shy).
thanks for the help guys. i'm really enjoying this new phone and I'm looking forward to really making it mine
Please see my answers in RED below

however, I have some (many questions).
1) the phone is running 2.1 - should I consider upgrading to Froyo? - YES but only after you root 2.1. if you dont, you cant root 2.2 yet.
1a. - if I do, does the flashing over to MetroPCS get lost? - not sure
2) how do I know if my phone is rooted? (there is an app called #superuser but nothing happens when I start it? - if YOU didnt root it, and you just got it,,, what do you think? - Super user, unless applications have already been granted SU access, will appear as if nothing is happening, SU will start to a black screen, you have to push the menu button to see the options - easiest way to tell if you ware rooted is to download something from the market that was designed for rooted phones, look for an app called shootme, its a screen shot app and it will tell you if you are rooted or not. you can also go under settings, then about phone, and software information, you can see what kernel and rom you are using. this is no guarentee because a stock rooted 2.1 rom will not have any indication that its rooted in that menu. try the market app i mentioned.
3) if it is, how do i access the adb I keep seeing in instructions to install bootscreens and such? - LOTS of information here about how to use ADB, start with the threads about how to root your phone, they usually have instructions for ADB
4) BIGGEST ISSUE HERE: the previous owner of the phone had his gmail account on the phone. until I moved the account over to mine, I was able to use android market. now that the phone is moved over to my account, i can't use android market and i keep getting a message that his gmail account can't log in. i can't seem to remove his account, even though I already added mine.

according to the phone I have to do a full factory reset but then wouldn't I lose the network flash? - you can remove the files with ADB but i do not know exactly how, you can also go under settings, then Accounts and Sync and see if there is a google account listed and remove it. - BEST way is to go into Settings--Privacy and choose factory restore, let it do its thing and when it boots up it will ask you to recreate your phone gmal account or just sign into YOUR account, which means you setup the market also
5) when researching flashing the phone, i had read there were some problems with MMS. my sister sent me several MMS and none of them arrived. my wife sent me one and it arrived. is this a problem with the MMS part of the flash or something else? can it be fixed? - Yeah you flashed a f'd up rom or the other owner did. you need to find out what rom you are running via the "about phone' -- Software menu to find out what you need to update to or reflash to
i have CDMA workshop and not afraid to try things. so shoot any solutions/suggestions to the above questions, or anything else in general i should know (i like modifying my phones so don't be shy). - CDMA Workshop isnt going to do you any good except for getting your MSL code which is only good for a couple of things.

It sounds like you probably need to wipe the phone and flash a new ROM. It will keep all of your sprint information but should reset everything to your google account.
You will need to find out what kind of bootloader/recovery you have first though. To find that out do the following:
With the phone off hold vol down and power till it turns on. It should come up to a white background and text saying it is checking for updates, if it wants to update or reboot tell it No (vol down)
There will be some green text at the top of your screen, that is your hboot version, security settings, radio, etc. This will tell you if your NAND is unlocked or not.
After you get that information scroll down to Recovery using the vol buttons and press the Power button to select it. It will show the EVO splash screen for a second and then go to a black screen with an icon in the middle. Depending on the recovery you will see a menu with green text and Build: ??? at the bottom. If this comes up then that means you are good to go.
If there is no recovery installed you will see an exclamation mark and the phone will freeze, just pull the battery to reset it. Otherwise you can select Reboot or Power Off to get out of there.
In order to use ADB you will need the Android SDK, just install that and there are tons of guides out there on how to use it.
this is what it said when I followed your instructions:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.79.0000
MICROP-041F
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.05.00.06.10
Apr 14 2010, 15:41:34
for recovery i have:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1
and one of the options is "nandroid"...
-----------
before reading your post I had reset the phone to factory. I lost most programs but i didnt install them in the first place so i'm cool with that. however, up until yesterday (today?) i was able to use pandora, go to facebook, use the internet, etc on Metro's network. right now i keep trying and keep getting a data error. even the weather update isn't working.
you mentioned wiping the phone and flashing a new rom. problem is I'M NOT ON SPRINT. THIS IS A FLASHED PHONE TO METROPCS. we need to have this clear before you guys send me to flash a rom that will leave me with a useless phone. can I reflash to metro using a better rom you think?

Looks like your NAND is still locked, you should consider fully rooting & unlocking your NAND so you can update your Radio. Once fully rooted Amon-ra is another option for your recovery that is rock solid, apparently clockwork has some bugs in it when it comes to clearing caches. Also it is very important you Do Not Do Any OTA Updates, if you do you will be stuck without root access until someone finds a way to crack it.
As far as flashing a ROM goes I dont think it would hurt anything but I dont have any experience with setups like yours. There's a thread in the dev section that where you might be able to find an answer though. Aparently you're not the only one who had their data stop working on them too.

i am not trying to be a **** but why the f**k did you buy a phone for a network to which it isnt supported....
ANY cellular company can tell what phone you are using and kick you and ever EVO off the network if they so desire.
frankly this is an ongoing legal issue with the Fed's i think.
phone companies locking people down to using their network with their phones...
not sure if it is ever going to go anywhere but i think it's bull****, everyone use sims and just get a new sim for your carrier.
but that means all phones would have to be QUAD band if they wanted multi carrier access and that makes phones expensive and i doubt they will ever do it.
have many reasons to stick with MetroPCS while wanting to have the best phone. MetroPCS is inviting their customers to bring ANY CDMA phone to their network and they will happily flash it and connect it for you. problem is if you flash with their service then you lose a lot of features due to their mass-flashing software. so you flash your phone individually and you have all features minus Sprint's 4G (and minus Sprint's PRICE).
anyways, after reading all this and reading online I decided to go and flash it myself. i'm about to finish now...be back in a few to report how it went.
got the phone flashed to ava froyo v5.
this is what's going on after diagnosing what works and what doesnt:
mms out - error sending (generic network error)
mms in - no notification, never arrive
texts out - fine
texts in - fine
internet - fine
internet OVER WIFI - not working (opera mobile works, regular internet explorer wont?)
facebook - fine
email out - sending error (account settings incorrect - incoming server does not accept ssl) - works fine with WIFI
email in - Network Error - works fine with WIFI
weather updates ok
-------
anyone know how to address these issues?
thanks for the help
I flashed my Alltel Desire with Gingervillian 1.0. When it finished it said it was successful, so I rebooted and now it's stuck on the Alltel splash screen. I tried wiping data/cache/dalvic and rebooting. Even taking out the battery and sd card. Nothing is working and I'm really pissed :/ It sucks going from an amazing Desire to an lg scoop, which is what I'm having to use now.
Any help?
Yes, I have searched the forum, but other people are using diff roms and having a few other problems. I just want to make sure I take the right advice!
Make sure the md5 of the download matches, then do another full wipe and reflash.
Ok thanks, but how do I do that? Lol
Ok I found the md5 of the download, but what do I match it too?
Ok, I found a md5 checksum checker and found out that the download did not match. I downloaded another one and now they match. Can I delete the old download off the sd card? Or what do I do?
yes, delete the old one. put the new one on your sd and flash again.
dont forget to do factory data wipe and clear dalvik cache.
you should be good (fingers crossed)
I done all of that and it's still stuck on splash screen I'm scared my phone is messed up for good.
Could I try flashing another ROM and if so how would I do that?
Isn't Alltel CDMA?
If you have a CDMA Desire you need CDMA Roms. I hope you did a backup before flashing this ROM. Try doing a nandroid restore to the ROM that came with your phone. If you want a ROM go look into cyanogen
Unfortunately there are not to many CDMA Roms. I would be happy to hook you up with a gingerbread ROM if you want!
No I didn't do a backup. So now I'm screwed? FML
Well thats not good.
You can get your phone functioning by flashing a CDMA ROM. But without a backup you can never get the phone back to the way it was given to you. So you cant ever take it back to alltel.
Here flash the first link on this page
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=bravoc
"cm_bravoc_full-33.zip" that should get the phone working but you cant take it back to alltel
Make sure you clear data/cache all the jazz you did up there
But it will still be able to do everything right? Like download apps, text and all that? I just completely voided my warranty with no reverse? Is that what you are saying?
And also, how do I flash this "cm_bravoc_full-33.zip"? Do i delete the ginger villian ROM?
Ok thank you soooo much!! My phone is working now, but I'm still unsure about activating it again and using it. Will I be able too? And I'm looking and I don't see a market so I'm assuming I can't download apps? :/ that sucks but at least its working some sort of a way! I appreciate your help!
For CM you need to flash the google apps pack, it should be easy enough to find
Thanks, I'll be searching lol. Do you know if I it will be ok to activate this phone?
What do you mean by activate?
I activated my other phone because my HTC desire wasnt working. Do you think I can activate my desire back up? Also..the launcher Icon just dissapeared?? I swear I didn't delete it lol. Any way to get that back?
Ok, I found the google apps. Do I wipe all data/cache/dalvic first before i flash them?
No, you do not clear anything when flashing google apps. sorry for not replying (didn't see page 2)
Your phone will fully function as normal, for me MMS doesn't work but i have a small regional carrier with no support. You should be fine
As for activation, you are no longer on Alltel's software. Since you didn't do a backup I don't know what to tell you. If they can activate it without seeing it that would be best. My best advice is do more research next time.
You kind of got lucky on one front though. Out of all the carriers that the desire is on, Alltel is the one with a leaked RUU (completely restore your phone with those). If you want to go back to how you got the phone you can look into that. (if you want to do that don't talk to me i don't know much about that, make a new thread)
Well thanks! I got the apps installed and the phone on and working, but I can't activate it. So that sucks. So your saying I could go back to being on Alltel's network if I use the RUU? Becasue I will definitely do that ha. I just want to be able to use my Desire. I miss it ha!
If i were in your position, i would RUU. That doesn't mean you can't activate your phone now.
(To do that on my carrier its *228 don't know about you, give that a shot)
If the above doesn't work call Alltel and tell them to activate it. But once again if i were you i would:
1. Do the RUU back to alltel's software
2. Root and download ROM Manger
3. Do a nandroid backup of alltel's ROM
4. Then get to the fun stuff like custom roms
Thats just me. Let me ask you a question, can you activate phones without going into the store with alltel as your carrier?
i flashed synergy rom r14 after rooting the device initially and everything worked out fine, then kept getting the notification for the OTA for the 4.1.2 update...being that downloading OTA while rooted is a big no no (or always was before i came to the note) i decided to check synergy for updates to the rom and sure enough it was up to r47...so i downloaded and flashed and everything went smooth but after boot up it goes through the whole hand free activation and after saying the device is activated and then going through the PRL update and that checking out, it is supposed to do the soft reset and boot up and be good to go...well on second boot up it tries to activate the phone again (again saying Activation check and PRL update check) resulting in a boot loop that never stops....where did i go wrong...every phone ive had (touch pro 2, evo, evo 3d, nexus s) has always been a pretty straight forward root/flash process...so far this one seems to be a pain....any help?
Well clearly the problem wasn't worth the rooting process because you were able to flash Synergy w/o a problem. Hopefully you have a nandroid of stock rooted. I would pull the battery and try to restore your backup. Don't forget that for this phone Recovery access is via 3 buttons: power, home and volume (I forgot if it's up or down)

its up (down goes into odin) and sadly my stupidity and eagerness led me to not have a nandroid (yes feel free to leave the backlash, i deserve it), my question is...could it possibly be i a need to flash a different kernel? another idea i had was possibly calling sprint and seeing if the could walk me through the activation process (ive had them activate rooted phones before) i cant ever find the right button sequence (ie ##xxxxxx to get into the different menus) on the web
##72786# is the code you can use in a stock based rom with stock dialer that configures the data. It establishes a connection and then runs through that whole cycle you described in the OP. I'm kinda intoxicated so IDK if I answered your question or not

So right now you are unable to get a data connection on any rom you try? If that is the case you will probably want to look in the DEVELOPMENT section for a totally stock rom that you can ODIN.

Good Morning,
First of all, I would like to ask for forgiveness for my first post/thread being a dummy's request thread and would really appreciate your help/guidance if you don't mind.
Cause of my f* up!
First, I don't want to blame the ROM nor my phone, it was my anxiousness to get Kitkat which messed my phone up. It often* used to say, System Update available, +-500 MB downloaded. My carrier said, "They only provide Kitkat upgrade to S4+ and S3 phones that are bought after Kitkat came." however, i the System update downloaded message seems to have deceived me big time. I usually skip it, didn't care much but today, it was different, I wanted* to have Kitkat. Summer vacation started, from today and I said, what the hell, lets give it a try. The phone got stuck with "Rebooting now..." message. I searched in google for quite a long time regarding this issue and majority replies for that problem were questions, "Is you phone rooted?", "Is your phone using custom ROM?" etc. So, I simply searched online how to get back to the stock* ROM? or factory system. (Sorry if I am using weird words here, couple of words, I learned it an hour ago!) I did the flashing? Odin-ed* it with stock ROM and deleted cache, data before doing the actual Odin work though and I don't quite remember the other word, dal.... something. Anyways, I couldn't find any proper Virgin Mobile's stock ROM and I am quite sure, staying awake the whole night is messing up my eyes as well but then again, I found lots of ROM releases for VM but I think I might be doing it wrong. I flashed my phone again, my carrier is Sprint now. :silly:
I will try my best to recall and provide you with the information that I remember so far before I Odin-ed? Flashed? my phone as the new info seem a little different.
Pre-Flash
Code:
Model # : SPH-L710
Android version : 4.3 Jellybeans
Carrier : Virgin Mobile USA
Network : Virgin Mobile
Rooted : Yes
Recovery Service/system/application : Philz touch recovery (Props to the developer, I've tried couple of those recovery systems under 8 hours of research and trials-errors, yours in the best)
Phone : Samsung Galaxy S III
Main Question
Anything I can do to go back to Virgin Mobile from Sprint? :crying: I can fully access my phone, just no service and all.
What do I believe I've
A backup from Philz Touch Recovery in my external SD card.
I can still access Recovery menu so I don't think my phone has already turned into a paper weight.
If you have any kind of suggestions regarding this issue, please do provide me with it, I would really appreciate it.
You may also add a little abusive words in it, I don't mind.

If you have a backup you made with Philz, just restore that backup. That's probably the easiest way.
Also, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2774333 This will put you on the last release. Then just ODIN Philz again and re-root.
People have also had luck flashing WickedX on Boost and VM without issue. But you will need the latest firmware to do so...which should be in the link a few sentences up.
Did you try flashing a Virgin APN fix zip?
