at my school, in order to use the wifi connection, you have to log in with your username and password(not like wireless password wep,wpa etc ). I can find and connect to the wifi but it will not work when i try surfing the web as i cannot seem to be able to enter in my username and password.
does anyone know of how to help me?

that is probably your proxy server asking for user/password to let you out...
oh whoops i didnt state my problem.
i do not know where to be able to enter in this information to be able to access the internet.
certificates?
other things?
im not sure.
how do i enter in for certificate?
well, what do you have to do if you were to connect to your school's wifi with a laptop?
At my university, once you connect to the wifi and try to access a page it re-directs you to a page where you must login with your school assigned username and password. Once logged in I can surf just fine. I only use it in lecture halls that have no reception.

Your school's proxy likely authenticates through Active Directory - which isn't, as far as I know, used in Windows Mobile (at least in any practical fashion). In an enterprise wireless environment, even a laptop may have to be plugged in via CAT5 cable first to obtain the proper certificate (something that isn't quite compatible with a mobile phone) - after that, it can authenticate on the wireless network. For this reason, some enterprise wireless networks offer a guest account with limited, more controlled acccess to the school's local network but it may, at the very least, give you access to the internet.
Sorry this isn't of much help, but it at least clarifies why you may not be able to access the internet. I did see this same question come up on the Experts Exchange website but they charge you to see the answer.
okay so i tried to connect to the wireless network on my laptop. it "connects" fine and dandy. What I mean is that the "connected" icon shows up. But the message that prompts me to enter in my username and password pops up after i open my web browser (firefox/chrome etc)
on my friends iphone. same thing. the popup shows up after you open up safari mobile.
is there really no way around this?
Are you using Opera or IE?
Opera in turbo mode will not let you authenticate.

I setup wireless manager to work on my home network. At the heart is a linksys BEFW11s4 wireless router with WEP enabled (64 bit).
It asked for the security password which I entered but it kept telling me was wrong. Finally it stopped asking me and the wireless manager show that I am connected to the network. It shows the correct SSID, channel etc.
However I still cannot access the internet or anything else on my network. It seems that I am not really connected.
What the H$!! am I doing wrong??
Please help.
Did the router give you an IP address?
I.e. Is the router DHCP enabled?
Happygoat
Yes it does give me an IP address (SX66 set to auto assign)
In reading over your post I started checking my settings and realized the problem.
I have to manually enter the key.
Once I did that...boom I am online.
Thank you for your help.

Hi I have had some problems with wifi hope you can help. I couldn’t find anything on this forum about it (maybe I didn’t search well but don’t think so) Listen, I managed to find some hotspots, I used a lot of programmes, like Streethawk, or WIFIFORM(or something like that), and many more, but all I could get was windows popping up to select connect using that and that to internet or work. I tried work, but that is it every time I got the message I couldn’t give you IP or something. like that. My Ip settings is give IP automatically. Am I doing everything ok, or is this problem network issue because I was trying to connect on public hotspot(which might be not accepting connections). And how do I know if the hotspot is accepting connections free of charge? Hope you can give me detailed instructions.
Thanks in advance
ilijamn: I use a programme called "WIFIFOFUM" and when in the programme on the left side of the window is a column called "WEP" which will either say "on" or "off" for a certain connection.. now when it says "on" you cannot use it without a network key(basically a password) but when its "off" you should be able to use without a problem...To connect to a connection while in WIFIFOFUM jus tap and hold the connection and select connect...
now also when that window pops up, its better to sellect connect via "internet" rather than "work"....
I hope this helps you...
@tradivise
Thank you it helped me a lot! But sometimes in WiForum it takes a lot of time to connect, and I tryed a lot of programmes and then I downloaded Street HAwk, It is the best one, at least for me.(the progremme does everything automativly-which is cool). Anyways, i have to ask you smth. else (prob. stupid question), when a network(hot spot) is free of charge do I need to set up IP settings and DNS settings and what is VPN?
Thanks

Thanks in advance,
Ilija
ilijamn:
VPN - Virtual Private Network, long explanation so just google search it.
IP and DNS should be setup automatically by the network, but some networks require a network key (WEP) which is like a password and without it you cant use their network...
hope this helps, any more questions jus ask!!!!
not sure about multiple tabs, if i find i will let u know
That should do it. Thank you
Hi Guys,
either I dont know how to search or there is no info on VPN on the forum(I probably dont know how to search) In any case. I need assistance. How do I setup a VPN on my TyTn running WM6 and also how do I get remote desktop client? I am sure this was around previously. Did MS remove it from WM6? Or was it HTC? It this is the case.. how can one get it back?
thanks!
here's remote desktop. How do you use it? I don't know how to set it up.
thanks!!!!
now for VPN....
cheers!
The remote desktop client is available in several places in this forum for download.
To set up a VPN:
add a new VPN server connection
enter the name / ip of the server you want to connect to
select the vpn type -- ipsec or pptp
next
enter your user name and password
finish
The only way I have found to connect to the von is to goto
Start-Settings-connections-connections-edit my vpn servers- -- tap & hold MY VPN
select connect
you must be using a plan that assigns you a public IP (not WAP)
hope this helps

Thanks cmccarter, done it but how will I know I am connected.. It does not say connected anywhere that I can see and when clicking/hold on the item it gives me the option to connect again, not disconnect as I would have thought The other thing is terminal server does not connect. It connects fine on USB. VPN/Remote desktop connects fine using normal internet on pc from outside the network. So I believe the network settings are fine.. How would I know though if I am on WAP or get an IP. Also ow would I know if the VPN is connected?
thanks

i also have struggled getting rdp to work over a vpn, in particular over 3+/hsdpa
the only i found in wm5 was to add the vpn connect to the exceptions list of the connection manager, so that it didnt disconnect the vpn whem connecting the rdp.
this occurs more when u use an ip address to connect to a work intranet.
suppose if u use the dns name of the machine and not the ip address then it isnt that much of an issue. in wm5 when u put the ip address in it assumes a an internet rather than intranet connection so it disconnects the vpn to look for the ip over the internet
putting the ip into exceptions forced wm5 to not disconnect it when rdp was looking for it.
i cudnt get it to work this way in wm6 so i am also looking for an answer on this.
rdp to my servers when they have crashed and i am on the road wud b wonderful....
Hi,
I've a similar problem.
I use a VPN-1 SecuRemote that normally connect my PC directly to the company network.
Well, using the share modem tool, I'm not able to reach the gateway.
the share modem system give me a private IP that establish a connection between PC and TYTN.
This connection use the Tytn like a gateway to navigate in internet.
Someone know to solve this issue?
Tanks a lot
if i select start the vpn connection, nothing happens - and i can`t ping the IP`s in the VPN. so i think the vpn ist not open - OR the routing entrie is missing....
is there some shiny "pptp - standalone" client?
greets, Nik
for some reason i dont think the vpn option works over 3g/hsdpa, atleast not on my device using t-mob web and walk.
if i connect the vpn when using wifi it connects and everything is fine, if i try and connect when i'm already running a 3g connection it doesn't work.
i dont think the radio stack is capible of handling a 3g connection and a vpn connection. we might need to go down the route of getting a seprate wm vpn client.

Have you reset your router power off 30sec and on? It may be your ISP, might not be your phone....
I may just be being silly because you say anywhere?
If your connection is password protected, make sure your phone is on the access list of your routers settings [192.168.0.1].
Check if you have the WiFiinit file in the /Windows/Startup folder
That was the problem with my dash, but i fixed it
hmm. ill try doing those.
ill let you know guys.
thanks
hmmm. So i got the Wifi to finally connect, but now none of my browsers work.
Neither Opera Mini, Opera Mobile, or PIE will work.
They just wont connect
Argggg. sometimes this makes me mad...

I have a slightly similour problem ...
But it's password protected my wifi.
How do i grant access to my htc on a linksys router ?
My HTC IP is 192.168.0.1 ?
192.168.0.1 is the URL for your router settings on your computer. Type it on your computer in the address bar of IE. Once you login, it's pretty straight forward.

On the Dash you can go Resco File Explorer Windows\StartUp or you can view via on Comp via Active Sync or Mobile device center "depending on os" Just make sure in folder options you have show hidden files Tools\Folder Options\View\Show hidden files and folders.
Well i deleted my WiFi inti file some time ago, what can i do to get it back?
You can nick a copy of mine

I know, I know. I should know this. But for the life of me, I cannot figure it out. I'm trying to use Gmote with my evo, so I can stream music, vid etc. I installed it on my phone, and on my laptop. I have a home network set up, the only access to the net that I have right now is through Cricket Broadband. It is WEEAK. When I open Gmote on my laptop, it just gives me the message saying that Im not connected to a network. How to I get it to see it, or do I need a router or somethin?

I have Gmote set up and all you need is to have your laptop hooked up to your wifi and have your phone also hooked up to the same wifi and make sure you have set the password on your laptop the same as for your phone. SOmetimes you will get a windows firewall notification on your computer so make sure you click on 'allow'.
Well cricket broadband doesnt run through wifi, so I have to make a seprate network. for some reason my phone wont see the network at all.
I am not sure if Windows can set up a domain to create an independent network, this is usually done through a router. Though I don't see why you couldn't set up a VPN and associate the devices within that. There is also the option of setting up a virtual machine on your laptop and running that as a router through the virtual nic's created by it.
Easiest would probably be the VPN. Just Google setting up a VPN in Vista.

Seems like I just don't have the stuff to do this. I have to use a Publicvpn account and they charge you by the minute.
The error i get from Gmote on my computer is this:
Unable to join the multicast socket. Is the computer connected to a network? Exiting Gmote.
I can't even get it to start. I am connected to the internet via Cricket broadband USB modem. What am I missing?
Yeah, that is an issue, can you set up a virtual machine to act as your server? Without a router makes all of this very tough.

Hy, I think the ip which is shown there is providet via DHCP from the DHCP-Server of your carrier. Your Laptop is in the same IP-Area because you use your phone a modem.

hy, i think changing the app doest solve your problem.
You need to be in the same network with your Laptop.
Is there an Error Page in your browser?
You need to Install a Port-Forwarding, or else you cant acess it from the internet, furthermore you need to know the external ip of your college's
network. For further help pm me or write down the ip's an the used networkmask here.
