Windows 7 on HTC Touch Pro2? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I've heard that they won't make the HTC Touch Pro2 windows 7 compatible because of the resistitive touchscreen. But they would make it for HTC HD2 (because it has capacitive screen).
Is this true?
And if so,. what about 6.5.1?

WinMo7 will probably not work on the TP2. As for '6.5.1', well, considering most of the ROMs on this site are running '6.5.3', I think it's safe to say that your question is already answered

windows mobile 7 will not support resistive screens, but i am sure there is a go-around way that will be leaked and implemented, Lol
what i dont understand is why HTC is making considerable amount of new phones that run WM6.5 and have resistive screens (not capacitive so they can be upgraded to WM 7.0 officially)

Thank you,
I don't know nothing about these ROM's for windows mobile phones (actually, with the entire windows mobile OS).
Is there a page where I can read the basics of how these things work? Like what a ROM exactly is, how to apply it onto your phone, will it remove ur guarantee. I'm kinda noob Gonna buy this HTC Touch pro2 soon so (preferring it over HD2 [is this weird? lol]), i assume that flashing is worth it.
Thanks in advance

Preferring a TP2 over an HD2 is very weird indeed.. get yourself checked out ASAP.

Well I would perfer the TP2 over an HD2 ANY DAY my friend. and im Checked as well.
From desgin to hardware its all pretty the same - except maybe for the CPU+Camera.. .. but Consodering the lovley keyboard on tp2 - makes it all worth it. And a Winner of course.
Pitty that WM 7 wont work on the tp2, but it doesent nesserserly mean that its impossible.. like mentioned before it WILL probebly be cooked\made by our developers on xda for the tp2 :, or simply wait until htc releases a Touch pro 3 with 1 Ghz of processor.

I stand with the rest of them, a physical keyboard AND tilting screen rule.
I could also care less about capacitive touch, as resistive is much more precise, thoug lacking in multi-touch :/

No ...
Even if the chiefs will be able to make WM 7.0 run on the TP2 .. i find it hard that it would be usable, ... as lots of the minimum requirments of the WM7.0 do not exist in TP2
ARM v6+, Open GL ES 2.0 graphics HW (TP2 has Open GL ES 1.0), and Multi-touch is required (not optional)!
source: http://www.intomobile.com/2009/05/12/microsoft-pink-specs-windows-mobile-7-requirements-leak.html
so even if we be able to some how override those requirements, the device will be exceptionally sluggish

What the difference in screens?
New guy here.
Can someone explain the difference between the Resistive and Capacitative screens and why it makes a difference? My only point of reference is that I've used an Axim x51v since that model first came out. I'm looking at the TP2 to replace my Axim and my cell phone in the coming weeks. However, the stats on the HD2 looks more like what I've been waiting for and a closer match to the abilities of my Axim.
Anyway, just curious what the differences were?

Resistive screens have sensors that respond to the pressure you apply on the screen, thus being able to use anything (fingers, pen, stylus) to use the screen. There's no multitouch.
Capacitive screens, I believe, have conductive sensors that respond to the electric current that comes from your skin? Hence the necessity of using your fingers, rather than being able to use other materials. Multitouch is supported.

yeah, i'll chime in with my support for TP2 over the HD2. I was excited to hear that the HD2 was coming to the US, but after having the TP2 for a week or so, making heavy use of email, IM, texting and Word Mobile (wrote a 800 word article on my daily commute over 3 days), I realize how useful the physical keyboard is.
still, I have a Blackberry Storm for backup, or when I'm traveling and don't wanna be weighed down by the TP2. But the big screen and customizability of the phone is probably going to be enough to keep me from switching for at least 1.5 years. By the time I buy my next phone, I hope it'll have a 4.3 inch screen like the HD2, a physical keyboard, a MicroSDXC slot and come in at under 13mm wide.

OK, thanks for that. I guess I prefer the Resistive screens as I still use a Stylus pen for a majority of my work with handhelds. I have very large hands and find using a touch screen and the small keyboards a pain. I've been doing it for so many years that I'm actually pretty good and writing on the screen versus the onscreen keyboard.
So I guess eventually, I'll be out of luck when it comes to technology. If WinMo 7 won't support the resistive type screens I'll just have to stick with what I've got by then. Heck, I've been using my Axim x51v since it first came out and am only now seriously looking into getting something converged

I haven't used the physical keyboard on my TP2 more than a few times, and I really didn't NEED to then either. In the past, with tiny screens, yes, i'd agree. But when you have SIP options like fingerkeyboard or SWYPE (!!), the keyboard isn't really needed IMO. And saying the HD2 is the same as the TP2 minus a few parts is laughable at best. The HD2 has 802.11n, it has a 4.3" capacitve dual touch screen, 1ghz processor, etc etc etc...
In fact, I'm fairly certain that the TP2 has wet dreams about being replaced by the HD2.
I'm not saying that I don't like having a keyboard... because until recently I refused to buy anything that didn't have it (see history in sig). But, like the stylus (which I never use either), the keyboard is becoming less and less important the better and better the screens and software become.

I totally understand what some people are saying about how amazing the new technologies are. But I think there are a lot of people like myself out there who focus on the very essential things:
- It has to effortlessly make phone calls.
- It has to effortlessly allow me to get through a properly typed email or text.
- It has to be functional through more than a touch screen because psychologically the tactile experience of a button provides you with a subconscious comfort level if you're used to it.
I LOVE tech. I'm a TOTAL tech guy and need to know everything that's out there and follow it's r&d, but i can't have a phone that only has touch. And I don't think it will ever be a perfect enough technology to replace the physical button experience. I think what we're seeing now is a trend. It won't die, but it won't ever completely dominate. Touch screen typing tries to solve a problem that doesn't exist and for that reason, as a business model, most business people will tell you that it won't ever find a large enough market. The population is getting older, and that market segment prefers something they can use with ease. I'm sure some older people like the touch experience, but not enough of them will in the future unless some revolutionary technology appears that makes touch typing as flawless as a keyboard where the only error is human error.
Just my opinion. I tried to say "I think" as much as possible.

well said. I think that you should check out the swype keyboard though. it works Very well and is extremely accurate.

I agree! Im upgrading from my att fuze today just to get the bigger screen and bigger hardware keyboard since i dont have woman fingers for this tiny fuze keyboard!
Now if HD2 had a tilt screen and hardware keyboard, all other phones would be out of service! Since it doesnt and wont, it leaves a large playing field for other devices. anyways, by the time wm7 is even usuable, im sure there will be a tp3 by then for it!

I'm only speaking from my personal experience here. I RARELY use the keyboard on my TP2. I thought I would use it a LOT more than I have, but the on screen keyboards, especially Swype, are big enough to get 99% of the text input in that I do on a day to day basis. I'm 90% sure my next device will be sans keyboard. Will be the first one I've ever owned, so I'll be sure to voice my opinion then.

Why does Windows Mobile (or the hermes) suck? -my complaints voiced

I was just sitting here using my phone with all the cool stuff that you guys all offer. WM6.1, icontact, SPB shell, custom icons, etc. Well its all good, but it just seems very "disjointed".
This isn't a stab at anyones work, because I think you are ALL making the most of this device, but there are some limitations that just make me wonder WHY we all keep putting up with this.
For instance, why the heck must we all endure poking a tiny X in the corner of the screen for certain programs? Sure I can use touchflo, but then some programs like spb shell use the same gestures to do different things. Can't I do one complete task without busting out that annoying little stick, or cramming my finger into a corner? (disjointed).
Why does it take 3 seconds for the screen to rotate? Shouldn't that be instantaneous? How much processing power does it take to render something 90 degrees? come on. Jeez sometimes i think it should just have a square screen. Then no app resizing.
Or why do I have to go from using my finger on the touchscreen (icontact and htc home, htc cube) to poking tiny one line text in stylus mode? (disjointed).
Or how about waiting for the phone to do things. Like when you make a call, or END IT? Why doesn't it END when you press END. Theres like a 3 second delay, so I always have to watch it to make sure that the other person doesn't end up listening to me banter on in some other conversation with someone else. Why can't it go "doodly doot" like a motorola, or make some other "its hung up" sound? The screen has no tactility so a sound would be nice so I don't have to make sure something happened. (disjointed)
How about WM 6.1. I mean why isn't it faster? I know it should be slowing down with newer releases (like every windows OS) but if I could trade out 10 MB of space for some more speed, I'm all for it.
Why are phones slow anyway? Good grief. This comes from a programmer who prides himself on trying to optimize code for efficiency as well as low overhead. I've seen XP run on a PII 400 at a somewhat bearable pace. AND THATS XP! Not tiny little WM.
Go ahead and post about things you don't like about the hermes or software in this thread. Don't bother telling me how to fix this stuff cause i'll probably just flash a new rom tomarrow and start the frustration all over again This is probably why I enjoy this phone so much, but for once I'd like to just win the battle before I start again. I KNOW that each and every one of you have been frustrated with these phones AT LEAST one time.
Oh, and sorry if i've upset anyone. I'm not making any personal jabs here (on purpose at least). I know you are all working hard to do your best to provide software for a common interface (the hermes). I respect and appreciate that. I know its hard to accomodate everyone.
/me throws out the idea that maybe he should start doing custom programming for WM instead of XP...
Do tell

you know WMPro OS's have about 50 diffrent KB's to choose from, alot of them free, and alot of them even cooked in to roms. dont like the stylus? use a full screen KB like SPB, personally i can type nearly as quick with the stylus using large keys + gestures.
you should also know the hermes has a slide out KB....
Or how about waiting for the phone to do things. Like when you make a call, or END IT? Why doesn't it END when you press END.
are you using a cingular/official rom or something? if so thats your own dumb fault

Didn't read your entire message. As for the first point, why don't you hit the hardware close button to close an application. The fact that WM phone supports touch screen and gesture doesn't mean you need or should use it in all cases. For a phone without hardware button, yes everything has to be done on the screen. But for Hermes, there are plenty of buttons for for specific tasks. Use that.
Indeed I have tried the Slither Cube (in C++). It was fast in spinning the Cube with finger. Yet it also supports spinning the Cube by the D-Pad which I prefer as it saves me from having to swipe the finger which there is not way would be quicker than a click of the button.
So my point is use finger, stylus and buttons where it suits most. Right tool for the right job.

Hi Carcomp,
I don't have any problems, issues or dislikes with my device.
I simply took time out to customise it to the way I like to operate and voila, consistent performance every time. By customisation I mean choosing the right rom then sifting through and choosing the most appropriate applications for my needs.
Keeping it simple is a rule of thumb that tends to work.
Cheers
WB

mine works greate.
Most ROMs use a 4 or 6MB PP. I've seen posts where people have gone to larger PPs (12MB) to get better performance. Comments? Optimal PP size?

since the Raphael is built on the same OS i doubt it will improve your experience much.
I and probably the majority of users here have found the Hermes great and would never go back to a standard cellular device ever again.
On some points I agree, on some I don't.
I agree on the end-call button thing. I also watch and wait and it usually takes 3 seconds before it really says "Call Ended".
I also agree on the turn-screen thing. Portrait or landscape shouldn't really matter that much. I also have another irritation here. When in landscape mode, the "unlock phone"-screen has such tiny buttons that you have to be a bloody sharpshooter to hit them. On most dialpad-skins it's the same. You can hardly hit the right number with your finger. Zero problems in portrait mode, nice big buttons, easy to hit.
The overall speed is indeed disappointing, as is the graphics performance. I recently played around with an iPhone and the interfacing was ALOT faster. No, I don't like the iPhone but I did like the performance of it. I also use my Hermes for Navigation using TomTom and sometimes it's a fricking slideshow instead of proper navigation. My old Qtek Himalaya even did better here.
Another grief I have which you didn't mention is batterytime. I went to Greece on holiday for 8 days. I packed my Hermes and my Nokia 6021. After 2 days, the Hermes starts beeping with an empty battery and it needed a refill 3 times in total during the 8 days(did 3 phonecalls, rest was standby time). The Nokia didn't need need a refill at all and I also made a couple of phonecalls as well as sent some textmessages. Yes I know I can purchase high-performance batteries but then I can't use my carholder any longer or fit it into the standard beltcase. Why can't the device be more economical with it's powerconsumption? Nokia does it out of the box. (yes I know you can't compare a 6021 to the Hermes but other phones of Nokia also have better battery-usage while having simular functionality). It was better in the past. I owned a Himalaya, it did about 4 days on a battery, I still own a Wizard and it almost does 5 days on a full load.
And yet.. I do like the WM interface, the multifunctionality, the integrated keyboard (whoever invented the 9-key-type-function to enter text-messages like on my Nokia 6021, should be shot) the fact that I carry only 1 device for phone, calendar, memo's, navigation and even more (mobile internet, phonebook, citymap, yellowpages etc etc). Actually, I especially LOVE that last fact because that is the exact reason I bought the Hermes in the first place.
My Hermes now is about 2 years old and I'm starting to look around for a replacement. I still want the keyboard feature, the Windows Mobile and all the things I love but I am looking for better graphical performance, more speed and better battery endurance. I would also like a higher screen-resolution while maintaining the compact format of the device. The Kaiser is definately not the solution for this so I am eagerly waiting for a new release from either HTC or any other competition (E-Ten, Asus, whatever).

no offence bro, but by the sound of the things you've mentioned, it's obvious that somehow/somewhere you've radically messed up with your phone. God knows what rom you've used and in what process you did the upgrade.
"3 seconds for the screen to rotate" ?? you must be joking. my phone/rom does it in less than a sec.
"I know it should be slowing down with newer releases" - another amusing joke. Only this single baseless generalization is enough for me to consider all your other claims with too much hesitation.
Who on earth would claim that Windows Vista is slower than WIN XP or WIN 95?
I recommend that you read the forum a bit more closely and change/upgrade roms more carefully and properly. Then you will not be this much annoyed with ur device and its OS.
Good luck
Great job everyone! Just what I was looking for! A 50/50 split between "I totally agree" and "you are a moron for thinking that".! Haha. Some good points were raised. I would like you all to know that I have flashed my phone with Schaps Lite / Full, some TNT releases and am currently running the new CRC 6.1.
Oh, my grief with the end button isn't that it doesn't exist, lord no. I know I can hit the end call button to get out of things, but WHY does it act like the "Show Desktop" icon. I usually just want to go back to the last task I was using (such as spb shell).
one point i also doesn't like is to add new appointments in your calendar or manage them. i need the calendar so much.
there is this finger-friendly actionscreen where you can select new appointment. but then, you need your stylus to set the time and rotate the screen because you want to write a subject and so on.
i also used other calendars, but they are the same.
i have tested an iphone, too. it has the best performance i have ever seen. typing sms was no problem. i dislike only one thing. you can't sync it with your pc -.-"
My Opinion
I grabbed my Hermes about a year ago and just jumped in man.. totally new to the wm scene.. and this phone rocks... love it! Totally customizable! I have learned (self taught) with the help of all xda peeps how to tweak my phone to the max...Seriously this phone can do almost anything (if you take the time to customize and tweak it) a friend of mine ownes a kaiser and beotches all the time.. it's hilarious cuz if he just took the time to learn and tweak his phone he probably could be as happy as me!
lata guys!
-josh
I just think that we should be able to do the most basic things without busting out the stylus. Like adding a contact, sending a txt message etc. All windows functions *may* be used with a stylus. But when "phoning", just a finger should suffice.
I agree with every single point you made and have a few of my own. You can use apps like Mobile Shell and it makes everything mobile shell uses better but anytime it has to use a built in app instead of whats in the shell you run back into the same problems. I used to do a lot of work with Samsung phones and it always seemed like I could flash them into something WAY better than it started by making it faster and giving it more features. With this Hermes I have now it feels like Im just trying to make it do what it should have done when I bought it. Like Im trying to fix the mistakes someone else was too lazy to solve. I too agree that the only reason I still own this phone is because of that challenge but I too am becoming sick of it. I just hope we will be able to use Android or Linux or anything else on our phones soon because if not I dont know how much longer I can tolerate WM. True there are some designers like Binkys and MRH that are making strides but it doesnt feel like they can change enough to really turn it into what I want.
This probably should be moved to the General forum, since it isn't really Hermes specific.
With that said, I've been a Windows Mobile user for close to 4 years now. (Starting with the Audiovox SMT 5600 on AT&T Wireless.) I've also carried a BlackBerry for almost two years, and an iPhone for just under 6 months. (No Symbian OS experience)
With access to these three platforms, I can see the strengths and weaknesses of each. I think many/most of the Windows Mobile weaknesses stem from the fact that it is based on a general purpose OS (Windows CE), where it wasn't really designed to do any one thing very well. The BlackBerry OS was designed first and foremost to sync email, etc and the experience is better than Microsoft's ActiveSync (which I do use). Yet, the third-party app and browser are fairly poor. The iPhone is game-changing because the user interface and web browser set new standards. The unofficial third-party apps also show potential.
There is no perfect phone, but the competition does drive improvements. I'm a Microsoft fan, but unless they make drastic changes in WM7, I think it will be an incremental update just like WM6.1, WM6, and even WM5. (Seriously, things haven't improved much since WM2003SE.)
I do appreciate all the work that the cooks do improving what we do have; keep up the good work!

Pro 2 or Hero?

I just recently bought a Palm Pre and returned it, hated it! So I bought the touch pro knowing it cam out almost a year ago (impulse buy). Now I am just curious, I know the touch pro 2 is coming to sprint, but its rumored that the hero will be out for sprint later this year, possibly December. Which one should i wait for?
i think major difference is the qwerty keyboard so decide if you need this or not.

+ one is android and other WM, usually a big difference depending on what you like.
That will depend on what is for you need the device
TP2: Buissness oriented device with the second best physical keyboard (1st is from Universal)
Hero: Multimedia oriented device with an OS tha promises a lot in the future, by now it needs to grow up and madurate
Welcome to my world, all these damn phones coming out, Hero I like however things I dont like are the shape, imagine that in your pocket? "Are you pleased to see me or is that a HTC Hero in your pocket?" and as the person above mentioned, lack of keyboard.

Haha, yeah I know, keyboard is a big deal to me. It's just WM seems to disappoint me a lot. Although I have high hopes for 6.5, I'm thinking sprint is waiting for 6.5 to release to touch pro 2, it would make it all that better!
But still, functionality versus a keyboard, I don't know! haah
I know what you mean about WM, but HTC have done a great job of masking the dull and boring monolike OS with Touchflo from what I have seen and WM 6.5 looks like a vast improvement at least visually.
Personally I think you, like me, would probably get bored of Android and the touch screen keypad would drive me nuts in the end.
I tried typing on an Iphone 3GS yesterday to get a (improved) idea of what a Diamond 2 or Hero might be like and with my fingers theres no chance I would type quickly on that ever, it would be like trying to look behind you without moving your head.
TP2 is the way to go, however the Omnia Pro is coming soon too, but then the Nvidia Tegra chipset powered HTC HD sequal is comign - I cant decide either, phones are like PC graphics cards these days.

the shape is virtually the same as the G1, and I've never heard anyone complain about any discomfort when they put the G1 in their pocket. and there may not be a hardware KB, but as far as onscreen KB's go, it looks like the Hero's will be one of best so far. and I like how the screen is capacitive and thus supports multi touch.
personally, I'm getting the TP2 when it comes out on AT&T. I'm also planning on picking up an unlocked Hero (unless it finds its way to the states, specifically AT&T). just want something else to play around with
Please buy both. Both has different strength, features & abilities. Both are totally different. I hope i will get one if god willing
For me it will be the one with the biggest screen & WM on it...TP2!

Yeah but the hero has a capacitive screen right? or am I wrong about that? Im actually not sure but I would think that it does because all the other android ones by HTC ara capacitive
Edit: I checked and im pretty sure its capacitive but I just browsed through search results

The same question has been haunting me lately too. I've been waiting forever for the TP2 to come to AT&T and now I see this. If they end up having release dates close together I'm thinking I might go with the hero. The main thing that will bother me is the lack of keyboard since I'm coming from a Kaiser (Tilt).

White is not definite. Colors and providers are yet to be determined according to an HTC rep on a youtube video that I saw earlier (If I can track it down again I'll include it with an edit....)

Agreed, but there's one big difference. You can get an upgrade discount on phones once every 1.5 years, otherwise you're paying out your A$$. Graphics cards are always the same (usually relatively lower) price.

Yeah you seem like you have the same thoughts as I do. I think you're right about getting tired with the android phone. I love messing with WM and modding it. I know you can with android, but it will have its limits. The thing about touch pro 2 not being a capacitive touch screen, it bums me out and makes me ask why they won't do this with WM yet. I can say they have been improving their resistive screens, big difference from the mogul to the touch pro, so I hope they can do that again. I am definitely leaning toward the touch pro 2. Does anyone know why they won't go with the capacitive screen on WM or touch pro 2?

This is exactly why I'm shying away from the TP2 and leaning towards the Hero or the Magic. The sheer idea of there being opportunities where I might need to resort to the stylus are completely holding me back. Guess I'll have to actually play with one before I make my decision; but, since using the capacitive touchscreen (iphone/G1), I'm not sure I can go back.

I would go for TP2 as it's not going to disappoint you!
Hard descision
touch pro 2 is coming to tmobile august 8th and hero im not sure but the magic is coming july 8th..the resisitive touch screen on the pro is so smooth it feels like its capacitive..and its alot bigger screen and has multitouch..but the hero has android and its built very nicely with the teflon coat and finger print proof screen..i hate phones so many choices ((

The resistive screen is one of the selling points for me, especially one as finger-friendly as TP2s. Best of both worlds. I get easy navigation without having to constantly sheath and unsheath the stylus, but I can use a compact and conveniently tucked away stylus when needed. I very much doubt I'll ever need it for the basic interface, but with some apps I'll want it. My Palm TX has been my primary Chinese-English dictionary for some time (before it, my Palm T|T and m500 served the same purpose), and the same software is available for WinMo. I'd just as soon use a stylus for character recognition. For that matter, I'd just as soon use a stylus for handwritten memos. I imagine capacitative screen users get by on both fronts just fine, but for me, I'm glad there's a good resistive screen still available.

So far with my TP2, I have not used the stylus at all and I am a pretty heavy business user, thats emails, facebook, youtube, general browsing and posting on forums, stock, sms.
Whats more I have yet to use the actual qwerty keyboard aswell, I find the touch one good enough everytime unless I'm typing a huge email or document.
My advice is go and actually look at the Diamond 2 and TP2 in the flesh, it is totally different to looking at it on the internet, it really is a quality product.

sorry to burst your bubble, sir, but the TP2 doesn't support multi touch. that luxury is reserved for devices that have a capacitive display. and while the TP2 feels like it's capacitive, it isn't. the Hero, on the other hand, IS capacitive and therefore the screen supports multi touch

Touch Pro 2 or HD2?

Hi,
I live in Sydney, Australia.
I've owned a HTC Topaz until i sold it to my dad to upgrade to a better HTC phone.
I'm tossing up between waiting until the 11th of November and ordering the HTC HD2 from www.clove.co.uk or to purchase a Touch Pro 2 from ebay.
I just require general advice on which would be a better investment.
Background:
Engineering Student, requiring a smartphone that can organise a busy lifestyle and last a few years without hassles.
Thanks,
Harry.
HD2 without a doubt. plus the specs garantee that it wont be outdated in a while... unlike the TP2 since a 528 CPU will only take you so far
depends if you need a Keyboard mostly
Thanks Mike, that was one hell of a quick response.
After the Topaz I was itching for a keyboard, but i think you're right.
The snapdragon processor will last quite some time and it outweighs my need for a keyboard.
I'm sure HTC can fit a decent touch keyboard on a 4.3 inch screen.
Plus if you're ever doing major work on it, you can just buy a bluetooth keyboard for it.
Still don't know about the capacitive touch screen. Most devices I've played with that have them seem to be too sensitive and at the same time less accurate.
I wish they were releasing the HD2 in the US.
Could i get one more piece of advise please - which site would be the best to buy the HD2?
Reasonable postage + pricing would be great.

the keyboard on the TP2 is great...have used onscreen keyboards for the last 5 years and now would not go back ...if you do a lot of text input (emails etc) then go a TP2 plus the business slant is great for organising work and play... the real question should be, want a real keyboard or not... the speed of text input will out play any gain by the faster processor of the HD2... now a HD2 with a TP2 type keyboard & under 170 gms... that would be a killer device
No hardware kwyboard
Not an option for me
TP2 is the best hardware keyboard device to this date
I have the TP2 from Telstra and really like the phone. It has the keyboard which is the main reason for me choosing it. Apart from this, the phone's screen is big and bright. And the performance is snappy. What I don't like is the Telstra theme. But I have changed to a Hero theme which I am very pleased with. So all in all, I am happy with my choice.
HD2 is just a TP2 with out a keyboard (as bloggers who have it are saying)
Ok you get a more ram with the HD2 and a thin device (kinda)
But you pretty much just between Keyboard + touchscreen or no keyboard and full touchscreen
at the end of the day its up to you. pick what you want.. remember your on a forum with users who have both devices and going to stand behind they phone and defend it so all you going to hear is users with HD2 saying "GET THE HD2" and users with TP saying the same thing
actually , i use the hardware kwyboard rarely...
but it looks cool , so i choose TP2
HD2 its in a league of its own. Its super fast and responsive. If you want to have great performance and impress your friends go for the HD2. I want the TP2 for the keyboard.
PS: The HD1 has the requirements for an upgrade to Windows Mobile 7, so that might be a plus too.

TP2 too HD2?

Soo, I've got a chance to trade my TP2 which I love oh so much because the keyboard is the sexiest I've ever seen, to trade for an HD2..
I want the HD2 but, then I don't want to have to deal with the on-screen..
What do you think I should do, keep my TP2? Or get the HD2..
After using swype the last few months I've been using the HW keyboard less and less...I'd probably go HD2 at this point.
Edit: Oh, and the whole WP7S thing too.

Haha thanks for the quick response
I've used swype on my TP2 but it's a little bit.. not sure what to put.
But I'm sure you get what I mean, tol.
What's WP7S?
I know WM7..? o_o
Yeah, Swype took a bit to get used to, but once you just learn to trust it and wait to correct stuff till the end it's pretty fantastic. Just about as quick as thumb typing on the keyboard.
WP7S, Windows Phone 7 Series, WinMo 7, WP7, whatever MS is calling it these days

WM7 = WP7S (Windows Phone 7 Series)
For me the benefit would be in running sense 2.5 without any hitches and great performance.
Alrightt, thanks for the replys
I'm still debating, 'cause I know the HD2 is quick as heck.
I'm just going to miss my TP2 ):
haha, it's all good though.
Can't wait to get my HD2!

Keep Rhodium!
Typing on REAL keyboard is not comparable to any super sensitive (capacitive or resistive) screen
Even if processor is faster...
I bet to Touch Pro 3 for mid 2011
My older brother just visited me and he has the HD2.. The phone is incredible and if i could have it on Verizon i would get it in a second.

I totally agree! So yeah, Keep TP2...
Get a HD2! TP2 is great but, hey, HD2 is a King!
rossle, if you're going to get the HD2 after all, here's what I can suggest to make the step away from the hardware qwerty as painless as possible:
If you haven't already, go ahead and install a swype keyboard on your TP2 and start getting used to using that input method now. Once you get your HD2, you'll be able to start using it (swype) comfortably right from the start, and that will go a LONG way towards making the transition easier.
Also, I'd start practicing holding your thumb a tiny bit farther away from the screen...it took me almost 2 weeks to make this adjustment (necessary due to the capacitive screen vs the resistive that you have now), but now that I've retrained my joints and muscles it's a much smoother experience...I'm sure that anybody who has made the step up to the HD2 can back me up on this
The deal breaker for me is the abysmal battery life on the HD2 as compared with the TP2. I don't know the real world difference because I only own the TP2. But the rated specs are disheartening. Would anyone who owns both comment?

Phones with portrait Keyboard

The purpose for keyboard on touch screen devices are for easy of use. But with devices like Palm Pre and Dell Lightening, and Blackberries, i really have a hard time, trying to figure it out why they have portrait keyboard. I have used blackberry keyboard, and it wasn't a pleasure experience. They are small, i have to look at them constantly to have typo free. On the flipside, i had an excellent experience with Touch Pro 2, my formal phone. (HD2 replaced it)
I believe Dell Lightening will do an ok job. Because i have a high expectations that the device is made out of plastics, portrait keyboard, and a manufacture that took their hands off in phone business for a long time.
Please feel free to express your thoughts on portrait keyboard.
I kinda agree. I feel like I'm either just going to use the onscreen or I want the real deal. To have to flip something down that's only marginally better than the onscreen I'm not sure about. I've always had devices with physical keyboards but I think I might get a slate device this time. I don't really type that much so I think I'd be fine with just the onscreen.
Blackberrys and the Palm Pre/Pixi are slim, so the portrait keyboard seems crammed. The Dell Lightning is wider than either of those phones, so the keyboard probably won't be as crammed. I just hope the keys aren't too stiff.

So dell lightening is wider than bold?
Yup, Dell Lightning is 64.4mm wide whereas the Bold is 60mm. Not much of a difference so the keyboard will probably be pretty similar. Still, quite a bit bigger than the Pre, Pixi and the majority of Blackberry handsets.
I think I will wait for a Touch Pro 3 or something of the like. I really, really, really like hardware keyboards.

I highly doubt that HTC will be making any consumer devices for the WWE markets with 6.5 or Windows Embedded Handheld. Asia may continue to see some 6.5 devices since WP7 doesn't support their languages but that's pretty much it.

Who in their right mind would buy a phone with an all but dead OS that doesn't work nearly as well as the newer one? There is just such a tiny market that would even consider WM6 over WP7 that it makes no financial sense for them to ship WM6 devices going forward where WP7 is an option.
