Anyone know what is the best setting for smooth video playback when viewing in Touch Pro 2?
I have download the Transformers 2 Trailer in FLV format and playback on my Touch Pro 2 but it seems to be laggy.
Anyone can advise me whether it is the video format problem or the phone memory problem as I have installed many applications.

Can only get on youtube through my Rhodium at work but isn't that video HD?
It's got a pretty fast processor for a phone but it's still only 533MHz, it can't playback HD content!
I've seen a couple of DivX movies (700MB each) on my TP2 and I have no lag issues...
In fact, I did had that, but back then I was using the player supplied with DivX codecs for Windows Mobile. Once I started using Core Player, the "lag" was gone.
I'll try that YouTube HD video in FLV format and get back to you.
BTW, what player are you using?
Yea i have no issues at all with any video format with coreplayer with the exception of mkvs.

I am also using Core Player for playing back the above FLV format file.
Sorry for the delay guys, but during my video speed testing , I found that although Core Player is supposed to play MP4 files (so they say), on my TP2 Core Player says "Player: Video codec (AVC aka H.264) not supported by the player!". So it seems that I have no H.264 codecs installed, which is strange because the H.264 codec is quite common on DivX. Well, I guess the movies I've been playing were not H.264 encoded.
This happened because I downloaded (without converting) both Transformers 2 trailers (LowRes and HD) from that link. The LowRes version came in FLV format (4MB), and the HD is a 33MB MP4 file. The FLV plays flawlessly without hiccups or delays.
I'm still searching for H.264 codecs for Windows Mobile, and will report back to this topic after installing and testing the video.
The HTC player will playback mp4's encoded with H.264, so long as they're Standard Definition with stereo audio.

I have download the same file again by copying the Videoplayback file in FLV Format from Internet Explorer Temporary Files Folder, file size is 12.2MB instead of 4MB.
How you can get 4MB and how you download the Low Res file? The playback is a bit jerky and not so smooth but after comparing the original one in YouTube, it is also a bit jerky and not smooth so there is nothing wrong with the Touch Pro 2 Playback as the problem lies on the source itself.
What you wanna do is get Coreplayer.
Encode your videos into Divx with vertical res. of 720 or under and keep the bitrate under 1500kb/s.
Great image quality with approx 112% playback speed.

I have used Coreplayer for playback.
Tried encoding "The Black Knight" Movie in the below format :
1) Width x Height (704 x 296)
2) Bit Rate (64kbs)
3) Audio Format (Lame MP3)
4) Frame Rate (23 frames/second)
5) Data Rate (1031 kbs)
6) video Sample Size (24 bit)
7) Video Compression (XVID)
There is some portion of the playback jerky and not smooth, any problem with the above settings?

You could try downloading that little encoding program.
It encodes your files into the perfect format for HTC Album. The user interface of the program is very easy and it encodes your files so that they play with full resolution and a good bitrate. Hope I could have been of help. All credit goes to it's creator.

I used a Firefox addon that "strips" the contents out of the pages (videos, sounds, SWF, ...). It can also be used to convert to other video formats while downloading, but I didn't use this feature as I wanted to test with the real deal.
I double-checked just now, and the smaller file (LowRes) is 4.76MB and it's fully functional and it plays 'till the end. The HD is 33,9MB. Perhaps there's a different file version when you stream directly from the internet... it doesn't make much sense, but I'm just guessing.
I didn't had time to continue searching for the right codecs yet. But I'll give it a go tomorrow. I'm sure I was not the 1st to experience this "issue" and the codecs "should" exist somewhere... so I hope.

Thanks for your recommendation and I recode the video again, it is much smoother playing over the WMP.
Will use this program to encode future DVD or Video for playback in my Touch Pro 2.
can tp2 playback hd video?
atleast 720p resolution???
it wud b great
since tp2 has dedicated graphics chip
and may be if we can overclock it!!
it wud be really nice to show off to frends its capability
plz reply i will b getting it after few days
thanks so much in advance
I think it's safe to say that it's impossible to play anything at 720p since our device's screen resolution is "only" 800x480 (720p=1280x720). That being said, video at or above our device's native screen res looks absolutely gorgeous (much better than the iphone's 480x320). You'll need to invest in Coreplayer if you want to watch anything though since the built-in player is very limited in the formats it supports.
Check out the last part of this video for some more info on video playback of the TP2.
yes bro i had seen tat review before
it states max 720*480 i guess
neways its still cool though my old UNIversal did tat too very well
was expecting a bit more
neways thanks for the reply
In theory, if a device were powerful enough, it could play back a 720p video and downscale it to the resolution of the TP2 screen on the fly. However, the TP2 doesn't even come close to having that kind of power. (The HD2 might).
CorePlayer will play a much wider range of video formats than the inbuilt video apps, but it's not free (costs $30) and, annoyingly, it's unable to make use of GPU-acceleration on the TP2. The same applies to all video player apps except the built-in ones - they run on the CPU only. This means you are rather restricted in terms of resolutions and bit-rates.
If you want something that will play a wide range of video formats and which doesn't cost any money, try TCPMP - you'll need the version from this post. When installed, choose DirectDraw as your video rendering method, then go into the DirectDraw settings page and tick the box that says "use blitting instead of overlays". TCPMP is significantly slower even than Coreplayer, but it does at least support AC3 audio, which Coreplayer doesn't, and, as I said, it's free.
However, for the best playback quality you should convert your videos into .MP4 format (on your desktop PC) and then play them on your TP2 using HTCAlbum. This is fully hardware-accelerated and can easily handle 800x480 mp4 videos (i.e. the TP2's full screen resolution) with a respectable bit-rate (e.g. 750kb/s). If you go to this thread or this one you will find two different desktop PC applications that are designed to convert videos into the optimum format for playback on a TP2 or Touch HD. The conversion can take quite a while, depending on the speed of your PC, but the results are very good, especially for HD source material.
There is no point in running 720P video on a 3.6", 480 x 800 screen. Properly encoded XVIDs look and run great on the screen and take up a fraction of the space on the memory card.

And what were you planning on playing an 800x480 xvid with on the TP2? You certainly can't use Coreplayer or TCPMP.

On a practical level, it's easier for me to batch transcode multiple 720p sources while I'm at work and then load, say, multiple 130MB and 400MB files onto an 8GB memory card that stuffed with mp3's and other videos than to copy just a couple of 2GB-4GB HD movies. I can understand your point about the practicality of having one file to deal with, but that's impractical on other levels simply due to file size.
The OP was referring to watching 720p videos on the TP2 in HD resolutions because the horizontal resolution is 800. It was pointed out that it doesn't work like that.
I've watched 624 X 352 xvid encoded avi's from HD sources and they aren't any less sharp than 800 X 480 transcoded mp4 files.
Some digital cameras like Sony TX1, etc already capture video in 1280x720p mp4 format. So it would be great if TP2 can play these smoothly. That would eliminate the need to re-encode videos that is very time consuming. And I can keep the same file for playback on both the phone as well as on computer and TV. At present, the hardware seems not powerful enough for TP2 to play these without dropping frames. When phones that come with with Nvida ION chips arrive, that would solve the problem. Adobe and NVidia have demonstrated how their chipset can play back full 1280x720p Flash video (H.264) at 30fps.

yeah i agree but its not about space
i mean a small music video which i wud like to share with everyone, etc
Samsung Omnia HD plays back these videos easily though it has a 800mhz proccy and a more powerful graphics chip but still i was eager if its possible!!
it wud surely help to carry some small HD video files than whole movies

My Tilt 2 has trouble playing divx at 624X352 at full screen. My old Tilt can play the same 624X352 divx with no trouble at full screen. Both phones are using the same coreplayer with same settings. It looks like the Tilt 2 has trouble scaling 624X352 to full screen. The video looks pretty smooth on the tilt 2 if I play it portrait. Once I maximize the video to landscape full screen, the video stutters. I lighly doubt that Tilt 2 will able to play anything high def smoothly. I've also tested the same video on my friends BlackjackII. Her phones plays the same video smoothly at full screen. In case anyone wants to know Tilt 2 has 528mhz process while Tilt has 400mhz and BJII has 260mhz.
i searched google and to my astonishment, this TP2 still doesnt have the graphics acceleration?????!!!!!!!!!
holy **** why did i order this handset!!!
feeling like doomed, i was well off with my old faithful universal

That's not surprising, since the Tilt's 640 x 480 screen necessitated letterboxing, so it didn't have to scale the video up. With a 800 x 480 screen, the video has to be upscaled on the fly.
That said, I can play the same xvid files you're talking about smoothly albiet with a dropped frame here and there (sound is perfect). This is with Coreplayer on my Sprint TP2. I have around 120MB of free storage memory -- I know that low storage memory can affect performance.
Why can't HTC just install 1GB of internal storage memory for all of their phones already? At least I have way more storage memory on the TP2 than the Diamond, but then again, I've only had the TP2 for 10 days.

Hi I have just started using handbrake and I am a little baffled. What settings or programs do use to encode video for the Desire?
I tried one encode to .mp4 using h.264 codec however I only get the sound and no video. Any help would be appreciated....
use Mpeg-4 instead of h.264 at 800x480px, works fine
I use the built in settings for the iphone and it works fine!

Hi how do you set the size to 800x480 and maintain the original aspect ratio?
There is no way. 800x480px is the max resolution to use. If you have a file with a lower res, leave it at that.
Oh I see, I'll give that a go....
It's really odd that there isn't a decent video player app out there.....
you can set the width to 800px and pres the keep aspect ratio. that will set the height to whatever is needed to keep the aspect ratio.
If your after a decent media player try nemoplayer (I cant post the link to the thread but the thread number is 598509)
I converted a video to [email protected], it stuttered a little with the default player, but played perfectly with nemoplayer.
As for conversion, I have found Xilisoft to be very good, I paid for it to convert videos for my iPod Touch as it has great default profiles and its very quick as it uses all 4 cores of my CPU.
For the settings it depends on the video but I have been using the following settings for x264 MP4 video, these settings should work with any video converter.
16x9 video:
1000Kbps
192Kbps audio (for movies and music videos, 128 might be good enough for most)
resolution 800x450
It leaves the smallest of boarders top and bottom but it retains the corrent aspect ratio
4x3 video
800Kbps
192Kbps
reolution 640x480
that`s an overkill. 800 Kbps @23 fps, 96k audio is well enough. It plays fine on default video player. Smaller file size as well.
I tied 800Kbps and found it looked no better than the music videos I purchased from itunes which are smaller again and have a lower resolution.
I suppose the best thing to do is play about with bit rate for the video and go with what you are happy with, file size isnt a big issue for me when it comes to movies or TV shows as I tend to only have one or two on the SD card at a time.
As for audio please anything lower than 128kbps should be illegal
There's actualy a very nice thread on these forums discussing the settings for the HTC topaz and which programs to use, but since google turns up this thread as the first one I guess I'll add a little comment here as well.
Any converter should work to convert video to the right format, it doesn't matter which one u use, as long as your converter has the options to set the video bitrate, audio bitrate, aspect ratio, frames per sec and maybe some extra audio settings. I use format factory and It works great.
Mp4 format with AVC H264 videocoding is the way to go. how you turn the settings out is up to you and the space on your SD card (or lack of one).
I use the following settings to play HD video on my HTC Topaz:
-MP4 format
-AVC (H264) videocoding on 512 bitrate (you might go up to 768, but will lag longer videos which you encode from a HD source) and a 800x480 resolution.
-AAC audiocoding on 128 bitrate (indeed the minimum for people with sufficient hearing-capabilities, otherwise you might wanna go lower than that, but not advised as you can definitely hear the difference) and 44100 sample rate.
-Framerate of 25 (fixed, no real need changing this anyway, it's the best framerate out there, any higher will probably slow down your video on mobile devices)
-aspect ratio of 4:3 (you can pretty much set this one however you like, as long as you don't let it decide automaticaly. if you're not sure about your aspect ratio use this setting)
These settings work great on Topaz and are probable to work for other HTC models, as long as they have a maximum resolution of 800x480. One more thing is to notice that your HTC device (at least starting from Topaz (touch diamond 2) has the ability to playback HD content. You can test above settings with videos downloaded from the HD sample site from microsoft. point is the HD playback only works on the standard player coming with your device (windows mediaplayer) because the decoders are not freely given to other developers and therefore no other video playback program has them implemented in their mobile player.
Hope this helped.

I installed Nemoplayer, but it only displays the videos in my DCIM folder? I have tried to move my test video over to that folder too, but it still can't find it. I converted it to mp4 with format factory, at 320 x something so the size should be ok
I usually encode in .mp4 h.264 base profile, max 3 ref frames, 800x640 res max and no cabac or b frames. At constant rate factor of 24 image quality is great and file size impressively small.
Tested on many videos, only mencoder needed, can't get any simpler:
Put this as one line in convert2desire.bat:
mencoder %1 -o "%~n1.mp4" -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4 -vf dsize=800:480:0,scale=0:0,expand=800:480:-1::::,harddup -sws 9 -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=24:force_cfr:bframes=0:nocabac:no8x8dct:global_header -oac faac -faacopts br=128:mpeg=4bject=2:raw -af volnorm=1 -channels 2 -srate 44100 -delay 0.3
Then run "convert2desire.bat tobeconvertedvideo.avi"
The resulting file will be tobeconvertedvideo.mp4
Lower crf to have even better quality and larger file.
The -vf parameters will always output a 800x480 file and other screen ratios will be correctly scaled to fit inside 800x480.
Mencoder download:
sourceforge.net/projects/mplayer-win32/files/MPlayer%20and%20MEncoder/revision%2031139/MPlayer-rtm-svn-31139.7z/download
I must say the screen of the Desire is top notch quality!
It is ridiculous how crisp everything looks for such a small device.
Let me know if this script works for you.
Anyone tried doubletwist? It looks like itune, and if we sync video, it will convert it to the format that standard player in desire can play.
I agree on the audio delay in your script, the desire seems to delay video by a little.

What is the best setting to convert videos so that my arc S can play it flawlessly?
So far the settings that I've tried always makes the video a little choppy here and there. Any help would be appreciated since I really want to use my arc S to watch movies on my travels.
The settings that I need would be
1) Resolution Size
2) Frame Rate
3) Bitrate
4) What file type and etc.
Thanks
P.S. If you can share what program you use and put a download link that would be great.
i used to convert videos using these settings
resolution: 854x480, must fit arc's screen
frame rate: 30fps
bitrate: >1.5Mbps is fine to me
encoded in H.264, mp4 format
audio: AAC 128Kbps
i was using cyberlink media espresso
for freeware try http://www.hamstersoft.com/free-video-converter which supports hardware acceleration
how was the quality when it played on the arc?

Yes, you will have the best quailty playback if you set the resolution as 854x480.
Because the full resolution of arc is 854x480. If you have a video which the resolution is 1280x720, it will only play as 854x480 on the arc's screen.
mp4 is a good format of video to play on arc, too. because it can decode mp4 video using the hardware but not the software, so you can play mp4 smoother than other formats.
If you aim at best quality, then set higher bitrate say >3Mbps, but not too much because it will cause lag
I tried 1280*720 with 10Mbps @ mp4. Worked fine.
I've been using MoboPlayer and it works well. It's been playing all files that I've thrown at it without hiccups.
Today I tried to play Game of Thrones 720p.mkv video on my arc S, and it was't really smooth. It lagged a lot. I tried vPlayer and MoboPlayer, and neither of them worked.
So, what can I do, exept thah I convent video?
Sorry for my bad English.
EDIT:Nevermind, just tried DicePlayer, and it plays very well.
my xperia arc s doesnt support h264 video. is there any mod for that

Well,as a proud ion user here,I wanna ask some question
Ion have 720p display which if play 720p video,it will fit perfectly on screen...well,I've been downloading 720p anime and it runs perfectly without errors...
What I am confused is : Is ion support 1080p video playback with its hardware?
I mean, even if the screen resolution isn't 1080p and oversize the 1080p video,I still can make it fit on my screen using MX Player...
Just the total question : Does it support 1080p video?
Sent from my SK17i using xda premium
the physical pixel dimensions of the Ion's screen is ~1280 x 720 (not sure if its exactly that, but its close)
the phone's hardware, though, is capable of outputting 1080p video...the 1080p stuff is for outputting to a HDTV via HDMI.
if you play a native 1080p video in MX player, what happens depends on your scale settings in the player. If its full screen, you set the scaling to 'fit to screen' or whatever its called...and its actually 720p...if you set to full scale, it'll play it in 1080p, but it will be zoomed in...even at 100%, as all the pixels can't fit on the 720p screen.
I'm pretty sure the stock player doesn't give you the options of full scale...it'll just fit it to the screen regardless...but MX player does let you 'see it' in 1080p, it just won't all fit...i had to mess with this because all my top gear episodes are in 1080p...

I push 1080p episodes of Top Gear via HDMI pretty regularly, and it works great. I can't comment on sound though, as i don't have HDMI running from my TV to my receiver...so its just TV speakers, but it works and everything...
I can't remember what type those files are, i wanna say they are .mkv ...but not positive...i just know its something my PS3 won't decode, so i have to use the phone...nearly any other video file i've used the PS3 plays fine, so i don't have to use the phone...
I will say though...MX player hated these types of files for the first few minutes...it only did it the first time i ever played one...it would get out of sync and stutter a lot...but after about 5 minutes it smoothed out and i never had an issue since...not sure if that is cache related or something, just saying though...don't give up if its a little wonky at first, it'll probably smooth out fine...
