Video encoding settings?Please help! :-)

I'm trying for a while now to convert movies to be played on my desire.Right now I am trying using handbrake.However it just won't seem to play whatever I have thrown at it.
My average convert settings are something like this:
An H.264 .mp4 file @ 2mbps bitrate with mp3 or AAC audio @128kbps,resolution 800x480 or 1280x720.
I have also tried to play each converted video with RockPlayer but nothing changes.
Bear in mind that the only size limitation for me right now is fat32's 4GB limit.I use a Kingston 16GB class 10 SD.

Strange, I've got an Avatar rip that I dl'ed and put straight onto the Desire that played with no problems, looks awesome as well. Plays through the default player or through Rockplayer as well

Can you tell me more info on the copy of Avatar that plays ok on your device?

I do it in two steps:
1. PocketDivXEncoder, just to have a "clean" AVI in 640x480.
2. SuperC, no resize (I find PocketDivXEncoder better for resizing).
Video MP4, Codec MPEG-4, 15 Fps, 768 kbps
Audio AAC-LC, 44100, 2 channels, 128 kbps
Perfect, IMO.

Thanks for the reply my friend but that's not what I'm talkin' about...I want high quality when I watch movies.Strangest thing is that I try to make my videos have the same settings that the Desire uses for the videos taken with its camera.To no avail so far!
Also,if anyone uses handbrake I think it would be a more productive thread!

I'm using AVS Video Converter now and my files works flawlessly. The settings are H.264 [email protected], 720p resolution (or native WVGA, as you like it), up to 8000kbps (without any problem for Desire) bitrate, no CABAC, MP4 ISO v2 container. Handbrake lacks some advanced settings, maybe you should try to change it.

But dude,it's a paid program,Handbrake is free,that's why I use it.I will try to find a cracked version though...

I do a H.264 @3Mbps,but I am confused with the advanced settings of it and probably that's where it all goes fuzzy!
I managed to snatch a copy of Avatar with Handbrake that plays well,but it's MPEG-4 @2Mbps(although it seems that higher would play no prob).But H.264 is better,so I want that if possible!

Following your instructions and settings pigbrother,I got a small length video(a 1080p trailer of Harry Potter 7 I downloaded from youtube),I converted it according to what settings you used with a 3250kbps bitrate and 720p and it played super smooth while having the best quality I'd ever seen on a mobile device!Then,I converted Avatar with exactly the same settings and it wouldn't play!I tried stock video player,mVideoPlayer and RockPlayer but none worked,it just said it couldn't open the file.The only thing I can think of is that there is some sort of limitation regarding the size of the file to be played(mine was 3,8GB),because the only playing copy of Avatar I got was an exactly 2GB big one I got with Handbrake.

So,guys,this is interesting.I made another copy of Avatar using AVS and I used some higher profile settings(like CABAC) to make an 720p H.264 mp4 file @4Mbps and checked the option to split it in 2000MB files.Total size is about 4,8GB for 3 files and it plays like heaven!The picture of it is the absolute best I've seen until now!
So guys,there is no meaning in disabling all those advanced options as they only give better compression and quality(while making the process of conversion slower however,mine took 7:30 hours with my E8400 Intel Core2Duo).You should only put a limit to the bitrate so that the output file doesn't get bigger than 2GB.
So that's it!Now,if there is any way to make the conversion using the PCs GPU which will make it far faster I'll be happy!

[Q] ROM with working h.264 playback

Can anyone tell me which ROM out there has working h.264 playback other than the original AT&T Tilt 2 ROM? Depending on the encoding program I use, I either get no audio or no video.
I've posted on this a dozen times, but no one has a fix. I've tried the latest Energy ROMs (start menu up top) and the new AT&T ROM, but no go. I've even put a trouble ticket in with HTC (they say it's not a known issue, but are looking into it).
Before you blame my phone or my videos, I've got a Tilt 2 and a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2. Both show the same problem. If I take the very same videos, that don't work on my Tilt 2 with Energy or the latest AT&T ROM, and downgrade to the original ROM, they work! Also, the videos play with
I'm hoping someone knows of a ROM based on a working ROM that I can load on both my AT&T Tilt 2 and T-Mobile Touch Pro 2.

You need 3 .dll files from the original Tilt2 ROM to make it work.

I don't know for sure that you have to have all 3 of the files, but I do know it works if you do have all 3.

Where should they be placed (in what folder)?

I tried placing them in the \Windows folder. I rebooted and now I have audio, but no video. So close, but yet so far. Any other suggestions?

Yes, they go in the Windows folder. You may have to use Total Comander or something like that in order to actually overwite the ROM files and you will probably have to do a soft reset after placing the files on the device.
Also, I just use the Full screen player to view the videos. I don't use WPM or anything like that, but the other players should work also.

Yup. I used Total Commander and did a Soft Rest. I'm just using the HTC player, and now no video on any of the h.264 videos, but sound. Before I had some with video and no sound and some with sound and no video.
I've looked around and found a few different versions of those files, also some references to htcmdp.dll, so I'll try swapping a couple of them in.
Also, what ROM are you using. I like the Energy ROMs, but I'm not married to them, so if yours works...

It's my own home brew.

All the ROMs that I have used so far, from the original Telstra stock ROM to the my current Energy 21907 ROM all played mp4 (H.264 and AAC) video files correctly. Frame rate may not be ideal depending on the bitrate and file sizes. But at least they play without me having to do anything.

Which ROM specifically? I'll load it today. I'm currently using the August 25th, 21914 Sense 2.5 ROM. I'm not a big fan of the Cookie Home Tab, but if it works, I'll give it a shot.
Also, what player are you using? TCPMP works for the h.264 videos, but really jerky. Windows Mobile and the HTC player used to be perfectly smooth on the h.264 videos, but now no video at all, or at least not in any newer ROM I've tried.

Assuming your signature means Energy Cookie Home Tab 21907, I just did a Task 29 and loaded the latest Energy CHT 21914 from August 28th. I opened Total Commander and clicked on a MP4 file that was h.264 and AAC encoded (which launches HTC Player). Videos from MP4forHD and the Video Encoding GUI have no audio (video plays smooth). Videos from AVS, Nero, and Xilisoft have audio, but no video.
So the search continues...

Why don't you try a mediaplayer alternative like TCPMP ?

I do and have. TCPMP cannot keep up with the frame rates of h.264 files unless you severely reduce the bit rate. I've tested frame rates of 23.97 and 29.97 at bit rates of 500k to 2000k and they don't play smoothly in TCPMP, or CorePlayer (which I've purchased). If you take a look at the Video Encoding GUI http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112 it will tell you not to use CorePlayer as it does not support hardware acceleration.
The fun thing is I have a bunch of videos that I converted to h.264 so that my 2 1/2 year old son can watch videos upon request. On my Fuze, everything worked fine. He dropped my Fuze, so AT&T replaced it with a Tilt2. I didn't like the ROM, so I upgraded to an Energy ROM (which are great). Unfortunately, I have not found a ROM other than the original AT&T TilT2 ROM to play h.264 videos. Having to re-encode them is a ridiculous solution.

I simply have the mp4 video at my SD card. The HTC Album recognises that and I can play from there. Again, it depends on the file size and bitrate. I have a 640x480 video with a data bitrate of 1 Mbps and it plays well on TP2. I have other that are 1280x720 and bitrate of 9 Mbps and it would be a few sec per frame. But then you really need a laptop to play that kind of video.
Now I think you need to make sure the video is encoded properly. I use Adobe Media Encoder to encode my videos. The 1280x720 video I refer to above, however was straight from my Sanyo Xacti camcorder as it captures H.264 AAC video directly.

Just one more thing you can try. The TP2 camera can captue H.264 video. (You would need to set the format at the advanced video camera settings there.) Then try playback the capture video. If it doesn't play back that video, then there definitely is something wrong with the ROM you have.

How could there be something wrong with just about every ROM I've tried, on two different phones. Also, I've put in a support incident with HTC and they've verified it's an issue. Below is a list of ROMs I've tried.
These ROMs will play h.264 videos made with Video encoding GUI or Mp4ForHD apps here on XDA:
AT&T Stock Tilt2 ROM

These ROMs don't correctly play h.264 videos. When playing video encoded with Video Encoding GUI or Mp4ForHD, there's video, but no sound. When playing videos from AVS, Nero, or Xilisoft, there's audio, but no video:

I've downloaded a couple videos from the web that do play with video and sound, but there's no rhyme or reason. I can't determine what is different about the one or two that work out of 50 that don't.

Now why they do, and what makes them different, are some extra drivers present, that I would love to know...
Do try them ou and let me know your experience.
And, for those that suggest always to try TCPMP or Core player, these two great softwares do not, however, take advantage of the machine's hardware, unlike Album or Media Player. By using the two latter ones to play the mp4 files, the experience is much more fluid and with correct fps...

Sorry to say, that after doing Task 29 and loading tp2_firestorm_v7.3.21914-FX that it's actually worse than all the others I've tried. Using the HTC Player, it freezes upon loading the video. Using Media Player, the program loads and as soon as it stops loading, it closes. I'll add it to my list of the non-workings.

Now that is strange...

I will have to try the new version, after I finish with the energy rom (so far also not compatible, sound wise...)

1. ActiveSync
2. Disk Drive
Try the disk drive option. It won't modify the file as it get copied onto the phone.

Okay... I've tried the following Valkyrie ROMS-
tp2_firestorm_v7.0.23123XT
tp2_firestorm_v7.3.21914-FX
tp2_firestorm_v7.3.23134-FX
The 7.0.23123XT version plays h.264 videos that were encoded with MP4ForHD or the Video Encoding GUI just fine. It only plays audio from h.264 videos encoded with AVS, Nero, or Xilisoft.
The two 7.3 versions don't work at all. They crash when trying to load any h.264 video.
At least I've got a few ROMs now that work. I'll try and take a look at the files to see what's different.

I either use the Disk Drive mode to transfer videos, or I pop the MicroSD car into an SD adapter and put it right in my laptop. I don't believe there's a setting issue at play as that wouldn't explain why different ROMs work and don't work.

Yes it can but only software decoding mode (I watch them with moboplayer which install a codec pack for this).

what are the properties of the file you are trying to play? what is the codec (divx, xvid, H264...) and the container/file format (avi, wmv, mkv, mp4....)? And also te resolution of the video file.
Real fact:
1. one StarTrek TNG episode (350MB file size); container: avi; resolution: 512x384, codec DIV3 (DivX 3) it plays very smooth with mobo player in hardware decode mode
2. one The Big Bang episode (175MB size); container avi; resolution: 624x352, codec Xvid does not play in hardware decode mode but if you long press on any file you can chose software decoding mode from the meniu and it plays very smooth
3. video in mp4 format (container) with resolution 480x270, codec avc1 (H264/MPEG4 AVC) play very smooth in hardware decoding mode with both moboplayer and system player.
You can find details about video files using a free software (Gspot). Just google for it. Btw is for PC this software.

So facts:
MPEG4 files are correctly handled by system video player.
I tried moboplayer with 340MB video file in avi container, xvid codec, 720x576.
System player will not start this file, and moboplayer playes it but in slowmotion (video and audio continuously more and more out of sync).
I did not know of this long press mode for software decoding and will try it later.

I have MoboPlayer Codec for ARM V6VFP installed (moboplayer installed it by itself at first run)

If still out of sync maybe is the limitations of our wildfire s cpu. I'll try to find some video close to your specs and try. I'll let you know

My personal favourite is Rockplayer, it plays all the files I've tried. Have you tried using a video recoder on your pc to scale down the frame rates and resolution?
This greatly reduces
a) the lag
b) the space require to store them
c) the drain on the battery whilst playing them

Yes, I'm using a video converter on PC (my favorite is splash pro ex) to reduce resolution and bit rate (not frame rate); our cpu can't handle resolution too high (720x*) and high data stream. But let's be serious... the display is too small to watch a movie; maybe the only situation when I consider watching a movie is traveling by train or plane. On the other hand, is gut to know we can play videos

[Q] 720p video playback issue

I'm having some problems about playing 720p videos from HTC Desire Z. It plays some 720p videos smoothly which are recorded by itself (also there is a fps problem in there, some are about 19fps).
I wonder which {container, codec} we should use to play 720p videos smooth. I tried with several media players like Vplayer, Moboplayer, Rockplayer and Android's default media player.
I tried some files. Here their properties:
Container: MKV
Video Codec: H264
Audio Codec: AC3
Overall Bitrate: ~4.5Mbps
Length: 71min
Size: 2.2GB
This was a concert video.

Rockplayer can play this videos but not smooth enough. It freezes for 5-10 milliseconds at every 1-2 seconds.

Phone can play 480p videos smoothly but I think it can play 720p videos since it can record 720p videos.

The DZ isn't actually powerful enough to play 720p videos from an external source. I can barely play 480p AVI smoothly. MKV and MP4 are a total lost cause for me. Haven't tried after I installed Virtuous 2.0 and had it OC'd to 1.5GHz though.

As far as I know, DZ has hardware decoding for 720p videos. So it can play 720p videos and DZ records with 8mbps and encodes with h264 and its container is 3gp. Only difference is container. Maybe changing container will fix this but I tried with avi, mkv. Maybe I should try with 3gp container.
Anyone tried?

Tried with its trial version but it says "sorry, this video can not be played" when i try to play video which I mentioned at my first post (tv show one) and also another video which is a mp4 video.
DicePlayer can not play any video in the phone

I use Rock Player Lite and it can play MP4 vids properly. Granted, I just OC'd my DZ to 1.5GHz, and an MP4 file encoded in h.264 with an average bitrate of 1.5kbps plays flawlessly. At stock speeds the audio goes out of sync and artefacts get introduced. Haven't tried MKV files since I OC'd yet though. Software decoding in RPL.
Hardware decode basically is the same as the default media player, software decoding takes up more CPU resources, but is able to play more formats and containers.

I haven't found any way to reliably open mkv container on desire z. MX video player by far does the best job (and yes, I've used other players like rockplayer, dice player, etc) but it still plays 720p mkv h264 slightly choppy. 720p h264 mp4 plays fine with software and hardware decoder, while 720 avi xvid can play smoothly on a small overclock.
I try to avoid 720 anyway because the difference between 720 and 480 on a 3.7inch screen is barely visible to me lol

Exactly lol. As long as it can play 480 on the DZ it's more than fine by me. 720p on a 480x800 screen... ~_~
MX Video Player.. Never heard of it. Gonna search and try that out. How does it compare to Rock Player?

i really liked rockplayer for a long time until i found out mx player had software codecs tweaked for ARMv7. Check it out on the market, its free anyway lol

I tried mx player but still there is the same problem.
I also tried to change the container to mp4. PC plays well but when I try to play on phone, video is smooth but there is no sound and audio codec is ac3. Maybe the problem is here.
I tried with rockplayer using software decoding, there is sound but laggy video.

Try MX with SW. Works fine on any container and format so far for me.

Tried in 3 available mode in MX Player but still laggy video

The trick is to use video in the correct settings for the hardware decoder. If you do that then it won't matter if it's in mkv or mp4.
For the video portion, use baseline profile h.264 with the maximum bitrate (VBV) capped at 8mbps up to 720p
For audio, use AAC-LC in stereo.

I think so. But there is a problem when playing MKV files. There is problem after I changed container to mp4, though.
But the audio codecs of videos which I tried are not AAC. Maybe this causes the problem.
I don't know, how hard can it be to play videos which have AAC audios.

Use Handbrake to encode and it'll be easy to specify AAC for audio. You can use the iphone profile for encoding.

I've solved my problem. I use dice player which plays 720p mkv videos (even with ac3 audio codec).
I wrote here dice player can't play any video in the phone. That was a hardware decoding problem, I think. When I try to play an unsupported video format with hardware decoding, hardware decoding crashes and unable to play videos as it should be.
So, after that if I restart the phone hardware decoding comes back and plays videos perfectly.
Is this a common issue? If it is not should I do a factory reset to my phone?

To be honest, with our default 800*480 screen, we would not be able to take advantage of 720p quality as 720p is 1280*720 (Unless we stream it to a HDTV or Monitor). Re-encoding it to 800*450 is wiser to conserve file size as well
found this recommended settings at afterdawn for Handbrake or MEGUI. Tried it with rockplayer hardware decoding and it is smooth i used mp4 format

[Q] 1080p MKV / MP4 freezing

Hi,
i have problems with 1080p MKV and MP4 playback.
When i playback a movie with 1080p and Hardware Decoding, I get terrible blocking and freezing (strainge colours, green Pixel and so on).
I tested with MX-Player (H/W+), VLC Player, Plex and XBMC. The result is always the same.
When i use the same file in ts oder m2ts - Format, then everything is ok.
So i tested to create the mkv and mp4 File with different Tools: mkvmerge, ffmpeg, makemkv, mp4box and so on..
Always Errors and terrible playback.
Is there a trick or can the device handle HD only in *.ts without Errors???

I'm able to play 1080p mkv files and mp4 files without issue. I actually download a lot of 1080p movie trailer in mp4 format to my tablet. However, I normally use Archos Video player or BS player though as the hardware acceleration appears to be better on them than other video players I've tried.

I use mx player and never have an issue, have you tried the software codec for mx?

so, i tested more:
Archos has the best Performance. you only see sometimes litte stuttering. But the PGS-Subtitles are not shown -((
BS-Player has Picture -Errors
MX-Player in S/W and H/W Looks ok, but not enough Performance for full framerate Decoding.H/W+ Decoder has enogh Performance, but the same Errors in the Picture like BS-Player, Plex, XBMC abd so on.
I don't understand why... the Problem ist not all movies... and this are not the movies withe the highets Bitrate. convert to ts looks good.

I just streamed a 1080p mkv from my WD Live network drive with no stuttering or sound issues. I use Archos player and the free codec pack.

i have the P605 with quadcore. has this other gpu than the P600 octagon ?

maybe is not the resolution but profile... 10bits encoding or 8bits encoding?

hey, stehohrhase, has this resolved with different player? I am tempted to buy p605, but I don't want to buy one that has issue with video playback.

i guess is not the player... TS is just the container... this device can handle 1080p

no issues
I use MK player with no issues even in FULL HD movies!
Maybe your files (muvies) are stored in ExtStorage (microSD).
Have you check your microSD card speed?

Try Dice Player its one of the best players out there, but for DTS audio you need "libffmpeg.so" from the attachment below.
Other than that try a test sample with video stream only and see if it plays fine, if it does then mux in the other streams one at a time until the problem returns.

10 bits encoding maybe?
