Tilt 2 Non camera/camera removal (Military members take notice) - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I've got a 13 month old Kaiser 110 (HTC 8900) that I've been trying to convince myself to replace with a Touch Pro variant for months - finally I have 2 decent excuses (USB connection is starting to go, and sliding touchscreen is developing a bad connection as well), but because of the nature of my business (military), of course I would prefer a non camera phone, comparable to what I already have.
So I was watching very carefully for the non camera version of the tilt 2, and the day I saw it I was shouting it from mountaintops...

Problem is, my phone (@ the time) worked just fine, and I couldn't justify spending the 350.
Now, you can buy the tilt 2 w/cam @ the AT&T store (regular version) for 250, or less after rebates or other promotions - less than that by far at other places - If you have access to an exchange (military or veterans) than you can literally get them to pay you - It's free after rebate, and they have a program that will pay you to turn in just about any mobile phone - they've offered me 67 for my TYTN II.
Military Wireless Center
I'd really rather buy a version with the camera, saving myself a ridiculous amount of money, and remove the camera myself - and I've found a few procedures to dismantle:
here
here
and here
and I found an excellent Touch Pro camera removal guide, thanks to Mike Channon
I still can't bite the bullet without knowing a bit more - please chime in if you have a non camera version:
Did you remove it yourself? If so, how?
Whichever version you may have, what does the back look like? on the 8900, ATT simply put a black blanking panel where the lens cover would be.
I've been thinking about buying a second panel (like this) and using a plastic putty, or JB weld to fill the hole, and then prime and paint - whats the back made out of?
Hopefully this post will at least help some veterans get a good deal on a great phone, but if anybody has done this, or is even considering it (or has a non camera version w/pics) hopefully we can get together and come up with a cheap, safe solution.
Thanks
Val (Kevin M.)

just buy the cameraless phones back cover and pretend like you dont have a camera phone. >.>

Do you not see the non-camera version of the Tilt 2 on AT&T's site? When I log in to my account and shop for phones (which takes me to AT&T's Premier site because I have a company discount) it shows me both a camera and non-camera version of the Tilt 2 for the same price.

Coincidence that I see this thread today. I just bought on Ebay a Non Camera Tilt 2 by accident. Seller was either deceptive or accidental but the auction said camera in the normal specs but when I got the new in box phone it had no camera. The seller is selling more like this and after I brought it to his attention he modified his other ongoing auctions. So I am trying to resolve this with the seller before I start an EBay dispute.
Also I am in the military but I want the camera for MMS purposes so I want a big partial refund or its going back.
Sorry kinda off topic but beware of angelyno55.

I see both as well on Premier...but $538 no contract from ATT. I am not eligible for upgrade so I don't know how much with 2/yr

Yes, I saw it on premier - 350 as i'm eligible for upgrade - but seeing as that's the only place you can get it NC, and you can get the reg. version for free.... It just seems like 350 is an insane price to pay when maybe we can get together as a community and come up with a better solution.

what the big deal if it has a camera, and who wouldn't want a camera. the one i have is great for the tp2

Must admit that I fail to see the logic in this either.
If you don't want a camera on your phone, then that's fine, but butchering your new phone to remove the TWO cameras (don't forget the video conference camera on the front) on it is going to void the warranty.
Further, any DOD (or commercial workplace come to that) place that prohibits cameras as part of the security regime is more than likely going to prohibit the use of cellular phones as well - this was the regime in use fifteen years back when I worked at such a place for the MoD here in the UK, and all you did was lock up your phone in your locker before entering the sensitive spaces.
So, if that's the form where you are, you're sorted. If not, hint: buy two phones, one of them a cheap unbranded/unlocked job, and transfer the SIM card as required: one'll be your work phone, the other your fun phone.
Hope the above helps

sorry to say that though the DOD allows cell phone use pretty much everywhere it does not reasonably pose a safety hazard, it permits cameras virtually nowhere - and in the case of the Navy for example, cell phones are permitted to be taken underway with you, but cell phone cameras are not.
If you had to disappear for months at a time, wouldn't you want to take your TP2 with you?
(p.s. I believe U.S. TP2 variants have only 1 camera - I guess America doesn't believe in the conference call. I don't get it either)

I am Army and I ran into the no phone no matter what even if camera less....but I don't deal with Navy much. Very interesting but I can see the need to forbid camera phone on a ship. BTW I sent you a PM.

I am in the Air Force... and I am not allowed to bring my cell phone, camera, ipod anything that could store information on it and leave with me, into my work place... But I live on base and can have my phone (with camera) anywhere I want EXCEPT my workplace... Even when I deployed it was the same. I have never heard of any rules like that on any base I have ever been on... Hmmmm... I wouldn't like that very much! lol

It's not just a military restriction. My company does contract/consulting work for the pharmaceutical industry, and for years we were told by clients "no camera phones in our facility". So, our IT dept had to lend us non-camera phones for trips to client sites. (or, since there were no strip-searches at the gate, we just had to be careful to keep our camera-phones out of sight)
USA-version phones don't have the front camera as there is no video calling on USA networks.

Well, as long as they don't know you have it, no harm no foul. And you could take pictures of various things and sell them for lots of cash to North Korean agents.

Understand
There are 2 issues here actually.
1) If you take out the camera you leave the water sensor in the phone open as well (there are 6 moisture sensors in the TP2) Hense you will have a voided warranty from HTC and or carrier.
2) Even if you remove it and somehow do not void your warranty.. You will still have all the camera software that is built into the phone. Hense still breaking policy.
Suggestion buy a replacement rear case assembly. Remove camera then use Total commander to remove all traces of any camera software. Lastly you do have 30 days return with most carriers. Try returning it.
Good Luck
To the sneaky suggestions in the upper comments,
Honor ,Ethics and Loyality mean everything .

I somewhat assume that with the Tilt 2, like with the original, AT&T probably just left the camera software in place - however on the original, it simply wouldn't start up after not being able to detect the camera.
However, I am happy to report that unlike the original Tilt, The battery cover of the non camera version of the Tilt 2 actually deletes the hole for the camera, vice just placing a black piece of plastic where a clear one should be - I get stopped and asked about that almost daily - if, I have a camera, if I had done that myself (not allowed), etc.
l4z3r: how is the camera electrically associated with a water sensor? or is that what you were trying to say at all?
(also, obviously if you are disassembling your phone, all warranties are out the windows, but I'd say that that is no means new territory for most members of xda-devs)

Please provide a link to a store that sells them as I would love to have one. Not even HTC or ATT sells them separate from a phone.

you know, i had been looking for pictures of the touch pro and touch pro 2 and their respective back covers just to see what they look like but cant find them. it makes me wonder if anybody has bought one.

not the best quality image, but I'll take more pics after it shows up tonight...

Is your back cover for sale?

negative.. went through a lot of trouble to get one (the whole phone I mean, not just the rear cover).
However my next thought was going to be to buy a gsm cover, buy the tilt 2, and modify, and paint the gsm cover using body filler or JBWeld, and painting it a flat black.
Until somebody decides to make them available for sale, that's the only way i can see doing the battery cover without actually purchasing a non camera rhodium (from AT&T Premier, the only provider I know of).

Is the desire worth buying

Hi guys,
My G1 will be out of contract very soon and I wanted to find out what experiences you'd had with your shiny new Desires.
Things like Battery Life...
Gps Reliability...
Ability to install non market Apps...
Whats the HD recorder Like.....
speed of the device.....
Any problems you've encountered...?
Overall thoughts....?
Should I buy a Desire really
Best value Smartphone I have ever bought (and I buy about 3 a year). I suspect its not as good as the Vivaz for HD video recording and the battery life is probably not as good as the Nokia E52 but overall with all the features taken into account it is the best Smartphone on the market today. I can't believe its so cheap - UK prices can as low as £390 SIM free and even on contract you can get one for a little as £404 when you take account of all the costs. The two areas where it excels is speed and screen quality.
For me, it was more than worth buying. I'm actually saving money from the old O2 contract I was on. I'll have actually recouped the upfront cost of my Desire after the first 14 months of my new two year contract with T-mobile.
I couldn't afford to NOT switch.
For specific issues, they are all over the forum. Beware of issues that don't concern you like battery issues of people who literally browse and play media most of the day.

They said that the Nexus One took the smartphone to a new level and the term 'superphone' has been used a few times. If that's the case then I don't know what superlative I would use for the HTC Desire. Uber-phone perhaps?

The number one phone available in the world today. ... it's like a Nexus One only better.
TechRadar
Much has been made of the fact that the HTC Desire is really Google's much-touted Nexus One. But, truth be told,... the Desire has several features that mark it out as superior not just to Google's smart phone debut, but also to the vast majority of smartphones available on planet earth.
The Register
If that doesn't indicate if it's "worth buying", I'm guessing you may have specific requirements. (I actually had this list pre-prepared for a friend who got the Nexus One saying it's better - hence the inclusion of many Nexus One references!)
It's not perfect, but it's great now, and has great potential for the future.
It seems to me that the desire is a great phone. Possibly the first to really comprehensively deliver on the promise of Android (responsiveness, full flash browser soon, good hardware, nice form factor, what I currently believe to be the best phone operating system). It will be, quite rightly, a massive seller.
Unfortunately it lacks a front facing camera, which is a dealbreaker for me.

worth it? yes i mean i'm a student (15) earn just over £150 a month so doing the sums takes about 3 months for me to save enuf for this phone considering the odd penny i spend here and there, and yes this phone is worth it amazing screen and all. when i tell people i spent £400 on a phone they are like , but i just reply by saying you wouldn't be saying that if i'd bought and iphone, i tend to just stop there and not go into depth about how this phone runs rings round the iphone, my dad has an iphone he's had it for literally a few months, and he's already like, so what other phone can you get on android? does it do exchange support? anyways i think that may have explained my point well enuf.
if your still in doubt heres your answer
GET IT NOW!
You'd piss yourself if you saw the phone I had at 16...lol!!
My phone at your age was this:
http://mobiles.users.netlink.co.uk/mot_mr1.htm
It was good at the time, except for the 4 hour standby IF you didn't make calls which were all chargeable on top of the monthly fee!
Anyway back to 2010.... the Desire is amazing and totally worth getting.
Sure it has a few bugs as posted here and on MoDaCo but these are mostly minor and will probably be resolved in the coming weeks/months.
I have just gone back to my Hero and it seems SO much slower and less responsive..
The same is true for apps which launch and run so much faster thanks to the 1 Ghz chip.
The Desires screen is a dream in comparison, so much more responsive and the size makes nternet browsing much easier.
Indoor shots taken using the camera also show a massive improvement, not upto dedicated camera standards, but much better!
So, would I recommend it..... definitely!

It was awful in comparison to what we have now! At the time it was what was available.
The poor battery life and expensive call costs (especially cross network) meant I rarely made calls on it... from memory Oranges reception at the time was almost non existent so to make up for it they gave customers a free cinema pass for the year.
My nearest cinema was 15 miles away so I used to wait for several films to come out then spend a whole day watching them back to back. Happy days!

Do I wait? or switch to AT&T now and get the Focus.....ugh
The Focus is definitely the better handset, so I would jump ship if it's that urgent. There are rumors that the Omnia7 will become available on CDMA though, in which case that's even better (in terms of looks/feel) than the Focus.

well as far as looks go, I actually like the focus better, the Omnia 7 is a little too square for me. But the Focus has a card slot (I know it isn't technically supported) whereas the Omnia doesn't. Though it would be the first NON-Omnia I have owned in years if I bought the Focus.
Where did you find the rumor of Omnia 7 to CDMA ?
Yeah it's up to you really. The nice thing about wp7 is it comes down to hardware. Which hardware will suit you more? Do you like physical keyboards? I have the LG Quantum, and to be honest, I never use the physical keyboard. It's nice to have if you have to be especially precise, but it's just never needed. Especially with the hardcase/skin I got for it, the sliding mechanism now is -very- stiff (that's what she said), but that's a bonus to me.
HOWEVER, the Focus is a Samsung phone. So expect internal memory to disappear, screen to become damaged, and have problems with the updates. I'd go with the Trophy personally, ony cause of that.
Trophy (for the) Wife
While I have been using Samsung Focus for my Enterprise Phone, I actually do plan on Getting my Wife the Trophy when it comes out on Verizon.
I've played with both and the Samsung is absolutely the better Phone from a hardware standpoint (AMOLED is the only way to go for small displays now and the expandable storage was a big deal for me as well) but from a Useability standpoint both are running the same excellent UI and O/S.
However Verizon has better reception for both voice and data in our region and we have several phones on a family plan so it will be easier to just upgrade her to the Trophy when it comes out.
At that point hopefully I can keep her from swiping my Focus to play xBox Live Games...

yeah where I am (NJ) Verizon and AT&T are pretty comparable as far as signal and such go. And I really like the SAMOLED and expandable storage option....but part of me wants to see if the Omnia 7 is coming to Verizon, but at the same time AT&T is going to be slightly cheaper for me...ugh decisions, decisions.

i hope verizon gets more than one wp7 at launch i have the touch pro 2 now and my screen is cracked, battery life is terrible and its on its last legs, i really dont like all touch screen phones i prefer the slide out physical qwerty but i just might be desperate to to get the this phone because i desperately need a upgrade
Samsung Focus for sure. Very good battery life. Absolutely amazing pictures. NAND memory. Excellent screen. Super this.
Best WP7 device by leaps and bounds IMO. Have one off contract, but wish Sprint had something similar. Will likely get the Arrive, despite hating the form factor. I would jump ship to AT&T for the Focus, but my phone bill would nearly double.

I feel your pain, My display is cracked too...I wish it cracked at the bottom of the display, it might be more usable for email (hard to read text sometimes toward the top).
I'm in the same boat with WP7, I'm not sure if I can hold out longer myself...but, I would love a physical keyboard....
decided to stick it out and wait on the Trophy...and hope they annouce the omnia 7 as well. Between the cancellation fee and the price of the phone and my work discount not being as big on AT&T, it just makes more sense to wait. Though the Focus is really the phone I want, I can't justify $350 to switch carriers. I just wish my contract ended sooner than December...
That's how I felt about switching. My contract is also up in December. However I decided that if I could get an inbetween phone for less than 200 I would. I ended up getting a Surround on Craigslist for $180. I'll just keep this till my contract runs out then upgrade to a phone I really want.
That being said however, I love my Surround. Great phone and 10x better than my old Tilt 2.

Yep, it was shown with the 16gb on the Microsoft Employee promo, so it has been assumed that the Verizon version will have the 16gb MicroSD in it.
If it does have the HTC SLCD display like some people are claiming, it might be a worthy phone, as engadget did a compare with the AMOLED display and said they were very close to each other. SLCD was a little poorer in the battery life area but, not that bad.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/spot-the-difference-htc-desires-slcd-versus-amoled/
Only downfall I can see besides no QWERTY keyboard is a 1300mah battery, other WP7 models are giving a 1500+. It could be a major impact on batter life depending on your uses. Just hope it has the FM radio, like claimed but, Verizon is known for cutting it out of phones.
I've been out of a contract for a while, I might get this but, I really wanted a WP7 device with a keyboard, I guess it all depends on what is given at the press release.

Here's the MS image showing the 16gb on it... (Source: Engadget/Winrumors)

Well this is just my $.02 but I think you'll find that you won't miss the physical QWERTY. One of the things I happiest with on my focus is how well the WP7 softkeybord works.

I've heard the WP7 on screen keyboard is great but, I have always had issues with onscreen keyboards due to my larger thumbs, so it could be a problem but, I can't try till I get one.

physical keyboard for the loss.
Too each their own and i guess this could fill a niche....but I hate sliders....i have yet to see one that doesn't compromise the structural integrity and durability of a device (hell some of them even feel loose and wobbly out of the box much less after 6 months to a year of usage). Plus....i feel in landscape mode the onscreen keyboards on the captivate and many of the new larger screen devices are as fast, accurate, and functional as any of the physical keyboards i have tested.
i am waiting the month out to see what develops with the Prime.
If it doesn't come to ATT is will either go with the SGSII or wait out the III which could be 1st quarter 2012.
For me a physical keyboard would make me pass even on a nicely spec'd out device.
Why did they give it the Captivate name? It looks identical to the Fascinate... Silly AT&T branding

The Captivate is the Honda Civic of smart phones. They're probably just capitalizing on its good name. I have to wonder, though, how many people will associate the name with a bad GPS and avoid it.
[rant]people who ***** about gps need to learn about these new little inventions called MAPS!!!
ffs this society is loosing all data retention "i dont need to remember this i can google it, i dont need to know my way around i've got gps" whats 2+2? hang on lemme get my calculator![/rant]
The original captivate was a really nice phone to play with and it was pretty damn tough. If this has the same build quality I'd get if I needed a new phone.

If I'm paying for a GPS, it should work. PERIOD. The box the phone came in says it has a GPS, so I expect it to work. If the GPS in my $200 phone can't tell me where I am on a sunny day, I have a problem with that.
GPS and Google's turn-by-turn navigation are one of the big reasons I chose Android. I travel all over the place for work, and I'm not about to hit up a travel store on every trip to purchase a local street map for $10 when I can get instant directions to wherever I need to go, complete with traffic info, right on my phone.
After a trip to PA with my boss using his Droid X GPS, I was excited to get an Android phone. Except that I got a Captivate that took 15 minutes to tell me I was in the next town from where I actually was. Sorry if it disturbs your zen-like bliss, but I felt that I had been tricked, and I wasn't happy about it.
I don't use GPS because I'm an idiot. I use GPS because it saves me a lot of time and hassle when I'm someplace unfamiliar. I used to draw maps for a Civil Engineering firm...I can certainly read one.
Maybe you don't get out of your own neighborhood very often and have no real use for a GPS. Maybe you have a photographic memory and have every road in the US etched in your gray matter. Some of us have to fly to Arizona or California, Drive to Pennsylvania or into DC, or travel to some other place we've never been before with little to no notice. Some of us even go on vacation once in a while and don't know where anything is. Why would I spend money on a map when Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation are available at no extra cost?
Just because something isn't important to you doesn't mean it's not important or useful to others...or that their reasons aren't legitimate. People are stupid because they're stupid. Not because they choose one tool over another.
Cant Wait
Been waiting for this phone for 2 years.... not been a decent QWERTY on android. still sat with my TP2.
a couple of things been causing me to scratch my head.
Why is the Power/USB at the top on these newer devices? makes docking a pain.
Why no TAB button? surely a really useful button to have on a qwerty.
and my last question/food for thought, not related to just this Phone, Why no Biometrics’ for security? surly with some for the intended use of NFC security will need beefing up.
either way as soon as it appears on Clove I’ll be ordering

yes i think he just tore studacris's.
[rant]isn't it somewhat ironic to rant about people utilizing technological advancements/tools in a smartphone forum?
I mean say for example studacris cellphone was plagued with poor reception...would he be just in griping or complaining about the devices deficiency? His rant would be akin to someone responding to that with "what..what you want good reception...haven't you ever heard of a landline?" Or pointing out the fact that cellphones and their contact storage and dial by contact/name have all but caused a large percentage of people to not even have their closest loves ones phone #'s memorized.[rant]
p.s. putting "rant" before and after my rant was tongue in cheek to highlight that apparently in addition to not knowing how to add 2+2 without a calculator people have lost the ability to utilize sarcasm and/or properly rant without specifically telling people that it is in fact a rant. =)~

Oh, My God! I'm getting the update! (NOT!)

I just called AT&T and gave them hell about the lack of progress on the Marshmallow update. Asked how much it would cost to close my account. Miraculously; I was forwarded to a tech support person with an IQ just North of a bedroom slipper. She forced the update to my phone. I'm past the download and my apps are optimizing. Incredible! Before I post, I'm going to wait to be sure, but it looks like I'm getting the Big M! 8 more apps to go! 1 more. Holding breath. BS! Don't know what it actually did, but still on 5.11. Time for the big guns. Stay tuned.
Just north of a bedroom slipper. Thats hilarious.
??????
Big News! AT&T Are Liars!
I called back and spoke to another Golgi apparatus who denied that they ever said that. My, how his toned changed when I started playing back the conversation from Total Recall. He proceeded to tell me that I could pay an ETF of $350.00. I told him that based on the recorded lies that they told me; I DARED them to try to collect. Never mind - just more AT&T BS. {Sigh!}
Sorry. "Just North of a bedroom slipper" and "Golgi apparatus" were complements for these oxygen thieves. Maggots is placing them in high regard. AT&T customer since 1985, and this is how I'm treated? I'm dropping them like a used rubber. Don't have any better "smoking gun" solutions since I travel internationally a good bit; but, I'll cut off my nose to spite AT&T at this point. (Extremely foul language omitted)
Sometimes I think to my self, how fun would of been if this device would of been root able? Big-time developers would be on this specific forum. Idk but lately I've been complementing on wether to give att another chance or split to tmobile
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA-Developers mobile app
Sorry that happened, it's the worst when you get your hopes up only to have them dashed.
Highly unlikely that att would push out an update to a single user, some of us have been trying to get beta releases for years. Unfortunately, we just have to wait.
So help me; she SWORE that they were already rolling it out (another lie), but I wasn't in the queue yet, and I'd be receiving it soon. She was such a polished liar that it takes my breath away. Then, she gave me the schmoozing touch by saying "Well, you're such a valued customer that I'm going to go ahead and push it to your phone." Eloquent liar. She said "Look at the top of your screen and tell me what you see?" I saw the diagonal arrows that only mean one thing. I was ecstatic! I told her: " I can't believe you were able to do it that fast!" She poured it on even thicker by saying "Now, wait with me for a little bit to make sure it goes through." Sucker!!! I waited until it had gotten to the 100% point and was prompted by the phone to end my call to finish the update. I thanked her profusely, and hung up.
I'm sure they were slapping their knees after I got off the phone with them. The phone went through the expected gyrations with the progress bar, optimizing apps, rebooting, etc. When it finished recycling; there was the all too familiar screen again. My heart was beating like a rabbits. I went to the phone info, and sure enough... Still Lollipop! SUCKER! I felt like Curly from The Three Stooges after Moe just double poked him in the eyes.
Now; I'm pissed. But, being the weekend, I realize that the only person to answer their phone is Hajji over in India, so that's a waste of time. So; my choices are: Stay with AT&T and continue to have nearly seamless international roaming, or cut my throat and go with Verizon - just to match my domestic coverage - (Same high price, same obstinance, but little to no international coverage, same hardware restrictions), or go with a lone wolf like T-Mobile - or worse - Sprint.
Deflated.
stay with At&t but never buy phones from them. nexus is the way to go my friend.
OP, I honestly cannot tell if you are for real.
Oh; trust me; I'm real. And, everything - virtually everything happened exactly the way I said it. It would be hard to make that one up.
As for the Nexus; I've considered that. Perhaps my timing's been bad, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the Nexus phones that I've seen. Especially without Mini-SD cards. It seems like there's always some stranglehold. I've been a Sammy fan for about 4 years now. The previous one was the Note 3 that I purchased outright from AT&T. Root eventually made it's way to it, but I jumped when the Note 5 came out without the SD card slot, and no removable battery. I panicked and snatched up the Note 4. Big mistake.
I wish there was a way to purchase an unlocked, unbranded Samsung Note that would work seamlessly on AT&T, allow updates without the bloat, and let me do what I wanted to do with what I bought. It defies logic.

Likely has no warranty I the states, and difficult to get, many are sold as 910f but are 910a with a system mod applied via odin to make it look like an 910f...
OK, I'll bite. You really didn't know that the ATT associates don't know when any update will occur? You really wasted all this time and energy and anger over this? That is why I smell a troll; everyone knows this, and it has been reiterated a thousand times. The fact is they simply do not know.
Think what you want. I'm not trying to impress you or anyone else. I'm venting my frustration and experience.
Now; if she'd told me that the update would hit at a certain time; I'd have taken it with a grain of salt. But, the way she schmoozed me; I bought hook, line, and sinker. Not to mention all of the speculation on this board that the update was immanent; I thought I'd hit the goldmine. That's what pisses me off. I'll be more than happy to post the recording (~10MB) of the 47 minute conversation - if you have the time to waste listening to it.
And, no; I'm not going to roll the dice on an international - or any other illegitimate phone - in the hopes that I can get what I paid for. That's just another frustration. It would be like buying a fancy Dell computer with a 3TB HD, but they installed 1.5TB of bloatware on the drive and if you took it off; your computer would crash.
OK, I'm done.
I have been an AT&T customer since 96. My first smartphone was the Sony x10a, loved it. Then I saw an ad in a magazine for the ion lt28at. I knew 6 months before the 6 AT&T employees(1 per month) that AT&T was getting it. I "chat" with AT&T about every 2 weeks to see if there's any info when updates are supposed to be released. Occasionally one will act like they have the inside scoop, usually, like with the ion, they're as clueless as we are. I fallen victim to false hope, I'm sure many of us have. Yes, AT&T sucks when it comes to updates and bloat, but I will tell you this, every single time I've had an issue they've done everything they can to make me happy. To me that goes a long way towards keeping my brand loyalty. AT&T is a pretty solid company and would have to do something much worse than delaying updates to lose my business.

yes they can push updates to individual devices, because i called as asked to have that done with the latest security patch, and the person asked me for my IMEI and told me it would take a couple of hours, sure enough within that time I had the notification for the security update.

I agree. I have a contract that was supposed to allow me to upgrade phones every two years. I went in and was told that they don't do upgrades anymore even if it is in your contract. Which means I have to pay that price on my bill and not get the benefit of it. They very eagerly offered to take that off my bill but it would kill my unlimited data. Why in the hell would I buy a phone from them if I can get one that is not locked down for the same price?

It's a dead topic in my opinion. We all know that AT&T's customer service is horrible and will tell you anything. What I found so insulting was the level of deceit that they went to convince me that I was going to get the update. Shouldn't be surprised. That's why I record theirs and a few other companies phone calls to confront them when they don't live up to what was promised. I still find it incredible!
So; I'm stuck with AT&T, or another carrier that's as bad or worse. It's a shame. I used to be able to count on AT&T as fulfilling their promises. My experience over the past couple of years is that you roll the dice, and HOPE you get what was promised. I suppose that's the only option. Their management could care less.
I'm done with this topic. Feel free to rant - which was my purpose - it seems to have no effect on them. They know your options are limited.

Logistics of keeping a Note 7

I know there's been a ton of posts about returning or keeping or whatever you gonna do with your note seven but just wanted to try to get all the information together in one thread.
What we know :
There is a voluntary recall
The major carriers want you return your device immediately
The US CPSC says "to power down immediately"
Samsung is discontinuing support and updates for it
The phone is banned from all us flights
Small possibility or device could overheat and catch fire
Alternative devices at this point are not comparable
At this point you can do two things, keep it or exchange it. Viable alternatives being HTC 10, LG V20, and Google Pixel / Pixel XL. I don't really want any of those phones so ....
As far is keeping it goes...
I doubt the TSA will be able identify on the spot a note 7 and tell you you can't board whatever flight.
I've heard stories about carriers blacklisting IMEI numbers, but only after a return was initiated. There's another post on here showing a verizon rep acknowledging that they cannot force you to return your device. I also doubt that carriers will refuse to provide service to "known" note 7 devices. Show from here I think the only drawback to keeping your device is a small chance that you have a defective unit and the lack of updates and support .
In cedar in the discontinued updates and support, what does that really mean? Besides a new or latest version of android, which can be easily ported over or manually flashed, we'll miss out on continued firmware support and development.
However if the phone works as is, and there doesn't seem to be any major flaws in the hardware (which there doesn't to me), do we really even need those?
TL ; DR - By keeping the note 7 we're only really missing out on firmware updates , and with that in mind , it doesn't seem that crazy to me to keep it .
EDIT: "mandatory" to voluntary
Since Personal Safety and the Safety of those around one, it should be advised by all to power the device down and return it for proper disposal by the manufacturer. One can only imagine that what ever Samsung comes out with when they do will be well worth it I'm sure, They have a lot of repair to do. Just my .02 cents.

They can keep the 3rd party support and updates. I never bought those anyways.
At worst, they will bump you off the network(s) which leaves a pretty desirable wifi only business companion except if you fly or work in a fireworks factory. Bumping from networks, forcing wifi only operation, does nothing to eliminate the risk of fire so I'm not sure about this one. They would need a total brick job.
I just received an S Notes update today. So much for no more updates. I know that it is not a 3rd party of security update but just sayin'.
Whether or not you will be expected to pay to keep it remains to be seen and time will tell. IF they are pretending the Note 7 doesn't exist then that could get interesting as well. This isn't Kickstarter here....
If I went iPhone 7 route I could retain my annual upgrade. Sammy can keep their $75 loyalty bonus for that matter.
Truth be told, if I am forced to, I will get a Note 5 off Swappa out side the Verizon network.
The way I see it is there is a big difference between a voluntary recall and a mandatory recall. Some are acting like this is a mandatory recall when in fact it is voluntary meaning they are not going to disable your phone you can continue as normal and then when the time comes because the phone is under recall you can simply return it and upgrade to a new device whenever you find one that suits your needs. The only caveat is there will be no software updates to the operating system for security patches but that's not the worst thing in the world. They are only disabling phones that have been scheduled to be returned other than that I don't think they can legally disabled all the phones unless it becomes a mandatory recall.

Here's the facts:
- Only 90 or so phones out of probably millions at this point have had this issue.
- The defect showed itself within the first several days of use.
- Samsung Techs were unable to cause a meltdown in their Labs. This proves that this will only happen if you have one of the few defective devices and they didn't find one.
Given the facts, here's my thoughts on the "personal safety and safety of those around you" statement. If you have used you're phone for over a month with no issues then it isn't a defective device. My phone hasn't even gotten hot at any time and has operated perfectly even after rooting.
Another possibility here is that there is a rare combination of APP(s) + use that is causing a unique condition for this to happen. Now here goes the conspiracy theory. It may even be that an unnamed competitor, after discovering this vulnerability, staged these meltdowns for bad PR. The incident on the plane was an absolute worst case for Samsung's image and exactly what someone wishing to damage it would have staged.
For the safety of those around me I'll be attaching this warning label

Isn't it a federal crime to bring the Note 7 on a flight now? If mine didnt lag so bad I would consider keeping it but not take it on a plane.

I see from you sig that you have xposed installed, lag seems to be a common problem with some of the exposed modules. I uninstalled immediately due to lack of features and the lag issue.
I sold my perfect condition Note 3 modified to Developer Edition on eBay but I do have another Note 3 with a minor screen crack which I plan to activate for any flights.....until next fall when the Note 8 arrives. (or whatever they nename it to for marketing purposes)
I would expect Samsung to continue their investigation and ultimately track down the defect. If it's possible to patch with software they may offer this to the many thousands that I'm sure will be keeping their phones. I actually talked to the Costco rep who said he still wanted a Note 7. The recall over a handful of defective phones isn't putting off a huge number of owners.

I don't think its xposed, when im screen mirroring, using gps, streaming music, and charging (aka in my car) it gets so hot the whole system UI crashes.
Neither of my N7's get hot or lag at all. Never have. This is the first phone in many years I have not rooted. I do have package disabler pro to disable the VZ bloat and the udate SDM apk's. No freezing, never overheats or gets hot, great battery life. Almost a perfect phone. I do use Nova Launcher, but that shouldn't matter for anything with lag/no lag. The N7 is pretty much everything I ever wanted in a phone. Not a fan of the curved display since you can't get a tempered screen protector that works for it, and the mono speaker is not very good, but those are about my only complaints (besides a non-removable battery that has overheated in 100 some of the 3 or 4 million N7's out there).
@jellyhead nice graphics lol, I'll probably do something similar
Does anyone (that's keeping it) know if you can get any of these "recall perks" without returning it? Like any of the bill credits Samsung or the carriers are offering or money back for accessories?

Off topic, but was wondering.. when changing launchers do you lose the software for the stylus? does it still work?

No, you don't lose anything going to Nova launcher. Nova is waaaay better than touchwiz. Not even close, at least for me.
