Is the desire worth buying - Desire General

Hi guys,
My G1 will be out of contract very soon and I wanted to find out what experiences you'd had with your shiny new Desires.
Things like Battery Life...
Gps Reliability...
Ability to install non market Apps...
Whats the HD recorder Like.....
speed of the device.....
Any problems you've encountered...?
Overall thoughts....?
Should I buy a Desire really

Best value Smartphone I have ever bought (and I buy about 3 a year). I suspect its not as good as the Vivaz for HD video recording and the battery life is probably not as good as the Nokia E52 but overall with all the features taken into account it is the best Smartphone on the market today. I can't believe its so cheap - UK prices can as low as £390 SIM free and even on contract you can get one for a little as £404 when you take account of all the costs. The two areas where it excels is speed and screen quality.

For me, it was more than worth buying. I'm actually saving money from the old O2 contract I was on. I'll have actually recouped the upfront cost of my Desire after the first 14 months of my new two year contract with T-mobile.
I couldn't afford to NOT switch.

For specific issues, they are all over the forum. Beware of issues that don't concern you like battery issues of people who literally browse and play media most of the day.
If you want the media critical view...

As for the Nexus One, ... we prefer the Desire...
Engadget
They said that the Nexus One took the smartphone to a new level and the term 'superphone' has been used a few times. If that's the case then I don't know what superlative I would use for the HTC Desire. Uber-phone perhaps?

The number one phone available in the world today. ... it's like a Nexus One only better.
TechRadar
Much has been made of the fact that the HTC Desire is really Google's much-touted Nexus One. But, truth be told,... the Desire has several features that mark it out as superior not just to Google's smart phone debut, but also to the vast majority of smartphones available on planet earth.
The Register
If that doesn't indicate if it's "worth buying", I'm guessing you may have specific requirements. (I actually had this list pre-prepared for a friend who got the Nexus One saying it's better - hence the inclusion of many Nexus One references!)
It's not perfect, but it's great now, and has great potential for the future.

It seems to me that the desire is a great phone. Possibly the first to really comprehensively deliver on the promise of Android (responsiveness, full flash browser soon, good hardware, nice form factor, what I currently believe to be the best phone operating system). It will be, quite rightly, a massive seller.
Unfortunately it lacks a front facing camera, which is a dealbreaker for me.

They are really just super vain people who can't bare to stop taking pictures of themselves so do it discretely even when on calls!
(Cleargrey bobs and weaves for the insults that come flying his way!)

worth it? yes i mean i'm a student (15) earn just over £150 a month so doing the sums takes about 3 months for me to save enuf for this phone considering the odd penny i spend here and there, and yes this phone is worth it amazing screen and all. when i tell people i spent £400 on a phone they are like , but i just reply by saying you wouldn't be saying that if i'd bought and iphone, i tend to just stop there and not go into depth about how this phone runs rings round the iphone, my dad has an iphone he's had it for literally a few months, and he's already like, so what other phone can you get on android? does it do exchange support? anyways i think that may have explained my point well enuf.
if your still in doubt heres your answer
GET IT NOW!

You'd piss yourself if you saw the phone I had at 16...lol!!

My phone at your age was this:
http://mobiles.users.netlink.co.uk/mot_mr1.htm
It was good at the time, except for the 4 hour standby IF you didn't make calls which were all chargeable on top of the monthly fee!
Anyway back to 2010.... the Desire is amazing and totally worth getting.
Sure it has a few bugs as posted here and on MoDaCo but these are mostly minor and will probably be resolved in the coming weeks/months.
I have just gone back to my Hero and it seems SO much slower and less responsive..
The same is true for apps which launch and run so much faster thanks to the 1 Ghz chip.
The Desires screen is a dream in comparison, so much more responsive and the size makes nternet browsing much easier.
Indoor shots taken using the camera also show a massive improvement, not upto dedicated camera standards, but much better!
So, would I recommend it..... definitely!

It was awful in comparison to what we have now! At the time it was what was available.
The poor battery life and expensive call costs (especially cross network) meant I rarely made calls on it... from memory Oranges reception at the time was almost non existent so to make up for it they gave customers a free cinema pass for the year.
My nearest cinema was 15 miles away so I used to wait for several films to come out then spend a whole day watching them back to back. Happy days!

But I do remember my Mum having one of those 'Trendy & High-Tech' Motorola phones on Cellnet!

Touch Pro 2 looks more elegant, it fills your hand , I especially like the chrome part very much.
After having the TP2, the Touch HD just looks cheap to be honest to say ........

It looks MASSIVE compared to the TP!
Ummm I'm having second thoughts now! I handled a HD the other day and thought that it was far too big.
Now I've seen them all together . . . . .
That's because of the lens of my camera, in real life the HD is clearly wider where as TP2 is thinner but thicker
I'll get a photo for you

funny!!!!!! tp2 is actually lighter as well. you will like it dude so dont be put off by the pictures. once you try it i think you will like it. remember it all depends what you want the phone for!
What I want the phone for? Good question that!
My contract is up in a month or so and I've been with WM devices for a few years now. I've really missed the keyboard on my last couple of phones but never really liked the look of the tytn/kaiser. My Diamond has a lag in most software including the TF3D no matter which cooked ROM I've tried, the ones with acceptable speed have had unacceptable problems associated with them
Must haves:
Good screen - doesn't necessarily have to be big but bright and clear with good fonts (my eyesight is going with age and I like to read books on my phone)
GPS - I have Tomtom and am happy with it
Office apps - may need to install some database apps soon - although will probably need to develop them myself so development apps needed
Fairly decent camera - Diamond is barely adequate, and I presume the TP2 is about the same
Music/audio player that remembers where it was stopped - I like to listen to audio books/podcasts
Other than that and maybe a few time wasting games like sudoku and I am satisfied ( although if someone could put an AM radio in I would be in heaven!! 5Live on my phone )

Relax Stunno,
You will never regret getting one, not for a second.
It will be the best decision you've ever made mate.
I've had hundreds of PDA's and this is by far the best I have ever owned.
Even die hard IPhone addicts at work are jealous, it looks great, feels great, performs even better, sits perfectly in the hand (and the pocket) and is not heavy at all.
Trust the forum mate, can you honestly say you've read any bad reviews or feedback from anyone here that hasn't been happy with their purchase....?
Cheers, (a very tired)

The TP2 is being brighter and thinner are just more reasons for me to get rid of the HD. Can't wait for it to come to the USA!

But I take yours and shingers5's points and I suppose I am only going through the normal handwringing associated with spending up to £800 on a phone! (700 with Tmobile 800 with Vodafone)
I would have liked Vodafone as my job involves going to some rural locations where the tmobile signal isn't particularly good. Dunno if its worth an extra £110 tho

Well, ladies and gentlemen, there is the evidence!
In a quiet moment at work today I decided to try the Vodafone Business. They have them in stock and I weakened and ordered one!
I'm holding Shingers5 and Beasty entirely responsible for my actions if I don't like it, or the delivery man gets a hernia getting it out of the van
It actually worked out cheaper than MPD free phone 500 minutes, 250 texts and unlimited landline calls and internet for £30 a month on an 18 month contract

AT&T Comparison: Tilt 2 vs. LG Expo - Which do you prefer?

OK. So you guys had me all ready to pull the trigger on the Tilt 2. And now I see the LG Expo online at ATT (I am stuck with ATT because I am an employee). The Expo seems very comparable to the Tilt 2 and so I did more research. And now I am thoroughly undecided about which to get. I watched this demo video on youtube and am very intrigued. Also check out this one.
I am hoping some of you Tilt 2 users who also know about the LG Expo can give me your insight.
Below is what I have found as far as pros and cons for both. I have a spreadsheet below where I compared what I think are the most important features. I highlighted in green what I thought were clear advantages for both. And by the way, the projector for the LG is not a consideration for me...cool...but not for me.
Tilt 2 Winners: Larger screen, better keyboard, seemingly much better battery, incredible speaker phone functionality, and of course the tilting screen function
LG Expo Winners: 1 ghz processor, 5.0 MP camera, seemingly awesome touch sensor directional pad and fingerprint scanner, SD card accessible on side, HSPA 7.2 capable (but I do not consider this an advantage because by the time AT&T can actually provide that throughput, all phones will have it), S-class user interface (LG version of TF3D - it seems very customizable).
Tilt 2 Losers: No D-pad (I am a big one-handed user and I live on my d-pad), poor SD card access, zoom bar (from my experience the Zoom bar is a dud and thus a waste of space), giant audio adapter.
LG Losers: Battery, battery, battery (this could be a deal breaker...it needs more real world testing), no 3.5 jack.

You might to add one more item to the Tilt 2's pro column: Latest and greatest custom ROMs by a lot of chefs.
I don't think that you'll have too many ROMs to flash (and the increased risk because there is no HardSPL for it) for the LG Expo.
I am jealous about the 1Gig processor though.
Anything LG is a loser in my opinion. Small electronics to appliances, their products and support blows.
Here we go again...
Entering to a Nike store and asking which is better from Nike and Rebook...
What will be the answer?
Seriously, even if lg has bigger processor I won´t trust in any other brand than HTC
Also XDA great support makes HTC to be my choice
battery talk time 8hrs vs 3.5hrs??? wth, is that a typo?? that would decide for me
I have never used my TP2 to talk 8hrs to test that but I can tell you my battery under a normal usage lasts almost 2 days
I´m quite happy with my Rhodium!!
in almost every way the htc device is better. it may not be better for you. but asking opinions in an very htc forum in a section where owners of the htc device look wont score opinions in the lgs favor. what ever device you wanna buy, buy it. but everyone here will say htc.
Hey ChasDun, I think this is more of the response you're looking for. I am also an ATT user and as far as smartphones I started with the Blackjack, went to the first Tilt, Fuze, now the Tilt2. Before I bought either of these phones I did a LOT of research to determine which, at the time, was a better phone.
The reason I just purchased the Tilt2 was because not only can you load custom ROMs which is a ridiculously huge advantage over most other non-HTC phones. Along with that, the Tilt2 has everything where it counts, and as a result it excells in operation, both as a phone and all the other operation. With the new 6.5.3 Windows Mobile everything is fast, smooth and stable enough to use as an everyday OS, as well as the fact that the performance of the phone is always getting better with every new build and driver that is released.
So in the end, if you purchase the LG, you're getting less function, a little more performance and a LOT less battery. So if this makes any sense, HTC = Function and other brands are still learning what it takes to build a really functional smartphone. (Unlike any other phone I've ever had, I use all the buttons on the Tilt2)
The lack of a directional pad isn't a big deal since the onscreen keyboard has one, but that is one of my few complaints about the phone (but I'm already over it)
In the end, though, I have to be fair and say I'm maybe a little bit biased because I couldn't imagine how much better the Tilt2 was an improvement over the Fuze, but for whatever reason the performance and functionality are a few steps over the Fuze.
Hope this helps!
Thanks to those of you who gave thoughtful answers. I know it's too early to tell how good or bad the LG will be. But I know that many of you on here are way more informed about new devices like this than I am. I also am very aware that posting this in the xda forums is going to have an HTC bias. But that's what I want. I have owned a half dozen HTCs over the years and I am basically wanting to hear some strong reasons why I should take the Tilt over the eXpo. But most people on here are also intelligent enough to admit the cons of the Tilt as well as the potential pros of another device like the LG.

Jack, in your extensive use of the LG eXpo you found that that the Tilt was better in almost every way? Elaborate? I have been frequenting these forums since my old Blue Angel days. I give most of the xda'ers more credit that they can give unbiased opinions and other insights that would be helpful in a case like this. Most of these guys are phone freaks and although HTC is king, many of them know a lot about devices in general.

Thanks Sellitus. It is exactly the type of response I was hoping for - actual facts and opinions based on experience. I don't think LG or ATT has done a good job marketing this phone. The TP2 is on every U.S. carrier so it got big buzz. But I think that the LG eXpo will slowly win a lot of people over with some of its fresh ideas (and again I am not alluding to the projector). I agree that HTC has the experience where it counts. My old Treo 750 still puts my friends' new iPhones and Blackberrys to shame with performance and versatility. But also, every HTC I have owned has had a few kinks worthy of improvement. So I am never going to turn a blind eye towards a newcomer. Basically the online reviews and demos will tell the story over the next few months. I want to believe that the LG can do everything that it touts as well as it says. I am glad to hear you say that the d-pad is not a hard issue to get past with the Tilt.
Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences. These 2 phones on AT&T are obviously marketed at the same audience with very little to differentiate them to the untrained eye.
the screen keyboard and battery life are all better. where it falls is the processor and camera. if you prefer the expo then go buy it. but you wont be convincing anyone here.

Jack, what about the LG keyboard did you think was inferior during your testing of the eXpo? Some of the hands-on reviews say the LG keyboard is the best part.
While I can't give you experience based on testing the eXpo, I can give you my experience on a non-LG WinMo phone.
My first WinMo phone was the Samsung SCH-i760. I loved it at first, and number pad was amazing for use in Excel, but once I wanted to customize it, it all went to crap.
S2U2 was buggy at best. I got it to work once, but when the touchscreen failed, I could not get it working on my next phone. It would drain the battery and crash constantly.
Next I tried GridLock. It crashed as well. Lock software just didn't agree with my phone at all.
I used to see my friends with their TP1s loving all these cool apps, and me stuck in the dust because my failure of a phone could barely run most of the XDA-Apps.
So, if I buy a WM phone, it's going to be an HTC, or a phone that has a lot of support from XDA, because I know the HTC phones have a huge following.
If you don't care about a lot of the apps that are posted here, and just want Opera Mini, Skyfire (which should be awesome on the 1 GHz Processor), and MortPlayer, then grab the LG; the projector is awesome! I happen to like LG phones. My mother and fiance have nothing but good things to say about them in terms of reliability and functionality.
I hope this helps.
the keyboard on the touch pro 2 is what makes the device. it has the best keyboard of any phone. much better than the lg expo.
honestly my past 3 phones were from htc. i had the 8125, the tilt and the fuze. now i just bought the lg expo got it this morning. im super glad i got this over the tilt 2. the tilt 2 is nice, it has a nice big screen, but i like the expo over it. the 1ghz processor is nice, it doesnt slow down when i run like 3 different programs at a time like my fuze did. and i did use custom roms, so far though this stock lg rom is better then any custom rom i used on my fuze. the speed is amazing. also the camera is much better then on the tilt 2. the keyboard is a bit different its not something im use to exactly but i will be in no time. i've been on this forum since my 8125 and it sucks that i cant get updates for the expo on here but im still happy with my phone regardless.

2) the FM radio is functional, but requires a headphone or TV out cable as the antenna.
The projector will be very cool I expect when it is released.
I have no complaints about the keyboard.
With the faster processor, the LG is heads and shoulders faster than the Touch Pro I replaced - and I am talking with new custom roms on the HTC product. The TP2 is slightly faster than the TP, but the Snapdragon frankly blows the slower processors away. Every program snaps in a way that it did not on the HTC.
The S Class UI is very different to the TF3D on the HTC but they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The fingerprint reader really does work...and fast enough that I use it when I never did take the time to use a password. This is probably a good thing given the 500+ confidential contacts I have on my phone all the time. If you could never bother to use some sort of security with your phone, this one might get you to, without any pain.
The build quality on the LG is superior to the HTC Touch Pro., I don't know about the Touch Pro 2. With my Touch Pro, the "black chrome" was always flaking, and I returned 3 of them for warranty repairs. The chrome on the LG seems to me more likely to stand up, but only time will tell.
The internet experience is far faster with the new network and processor - but I am on the Telus network and your results may vary.
For me, the only thing that makes it at all close is the custom ROM support, which I am sure will be better for the HTC. And that is why I am having a hard time deciding. At first I hated the S class UI. But it is growing on me.
Good luck with your decision...I don't know what mine will be but I am leaning toward the LG...ever so slightly. And I have to decide by Friday.
cheers
im super happy with my expo and in no time custom roms will be out I can't wait.
I LOVE MY TILT 2 ............
The End ......
Thanks to all who have replied with intelligent responses. The big hang up with me is still the lack of the d-pad. I see it is also sorely missed by some Tilt 2 users since there are many threads regarding Zoom Bar and Volume Keys as faux d-pads with dozens of posts. But there are mixed reviews on the eXpos touch sensor as a decent d-pad. So the jury is out on that one. If ATT would ever actually get the device in the stores I will just give it a trial.
The whole UI thing is a moot point to me. I have tried most everything from TF3d to iPhone to Blackberry to Symbian to Android to Widgets to Winterface to SPB Mobile Shell. And they all come with a compromise, be it speed, lack of full customization or poor usability. So I am over the "sexy" argument. I have been using SPB Pocket Plus for years now and it has made every WinMo phone I have owned incredibly useful. I can add as many tabs as I need and fully customize the home screen. And the tiny footprint doesn't take anything away from performance. Sure, it's not as sexy as what many others have on their devices, but its more functional.
BTW, I am puzzled by why people like Jack of Clubs and 69Pwned post things that have no actual value in the threads. Now I see how some people get so many posts to their name. If you can't intelligently discuss the OP then please don't bother and move on to something else. It's just a waste of our time. Anytime someone blindly says "this is better than everything else" when they have never tried "everything else", it just makes us ignore anything you say in the future. I have owned 4 HTC devices in a row and loved them all. But I am not narrow-minded enough to not want and explore other avenues. How can your keyboard be better than the one on a device you have never set hands on?

Verizon rumor...

http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/verizons-htc-trophy-coming-late-march-report
Do I wait? or switch to AT&T now and get the Focus.....ugh
The Focus is definitely the better handset, so I would jump ship if it's that urgent. There are rumors that the Omnia7 will become available on CDMA though, in which case that's even better (in terms of looks/feel) than the Focus.

well as far as looks go, I actually like the focus better, the Omnia 7 is a little too square for me. But the Focus has a card slot (I know it isn't technically supported) whereas the Omnia doesn't. Though it would be the first NON-Omnia I have owned in years if I bought the Focus.
Where did you find the rumor of Omnia 7 to CDMA ?
Yeah it's up to you really. The nice thing about wp7 is it comes down to hardware. Which hardware will suit you more? Do you like physical keyboards? I have the LG Quantum, and to be honest, I never use the physical keyboard. It's nice to have if you have to be especially precise, but it's just never needed. Especially with the hardcase/skin I got for it, the sliding mechanism now is -very- stiff (that's what she said), but that's a bonus to me.
HOWEVER, the Focus is a Samsung phone. So expect internal memory to disappear, screen to become damaged, and have problems with the updates. I'd go with the Trophy personally, ony cause of that.
Trophy (for the) Wife
While I have been using Samsung Focus for my Enterprise Phone, I actually do plan on Getting my Wife the Trophy when it comes out on Verizon.
I've played with both and the Samsung is absolutely the better Phone from a hardware standpoint (AMOLED is the only way to go for small displays now and the expandable storage was a big deal for me as well) but from a Useability standpoint both are running the same excellent UI and O/S.
However Verizon has better reception for both voice and data in our region and we have several phones on a family plan so it will be easier to just upgrade her to the Trophy when it comes out.
At that point hopefully I can keep her from swiping my Focus to play xBox Live Games...

yeah where I am (NJ) Verizon and AT&T are pretty comparable as far as signal and such go. And I really like the SAMOLED and expandable storage option....but part of me wants to see if the Omnia 7 is coming to Verizon, but at the same time AT&T is going to be slightly cheaper for me...ugh decisions, decisions.

In that case, go with the Focus - it won't disappoint in the slightest. Personally I prefer the O7 in terms of look (and definitely feel) but as you say the Focus has the SD slot which I would have loved.

i hope verizon gets more than one wp7 at launch i have the touch pro 2 now and my screen is cracked, battery life is terrible and its on its last legs, i really dont like all touch screen phones i prefer the slide out physical qwerty but i just might be desperate to to get the this phone because i desperately need a upgrade
Samsung Focus for sure. Very good battery life. Absolutely amazing pictures. NAND memory. Excellent screen. Super this.
Best WP7 device by leaps and bounds IMO. Have one off contract, but wish Sprint had something similar. Will likely get the Arrive, despite hating the form factor. I would jump ship to AT&T for the Focus, but my phone bill would nearly double.

I feel your pain, My display is cracked too...I wish it cracked at the bottom of the display, it might be more usable for email (hard to read text sometimes toward the top).
I'm in the same boat with WP7, I'm not sure if I can hold out longer myself...but, I would love a physical keyboard....
decided to stick it out and wait on the Trophy...and hope they annouce the omnia 7 as well. Between the cancellation fee and the price of the phone and my work discount not being as big on AT&T, it just makes more sense to wait. Though the Focus is really the phone I want, I can't justify $350 to switch carriers. I just wish my contract ended sooner than December...
That's how I felt about switching. My contract is also up in December. However I decided that if I could get an inbetween phone for less than 200 I would. I ended up getting a Surround on Craigslist for $180. I'll just keep this till my contract runs out then upgrade to a phone I really want.
That being said however, I love my Surround. Great phone and 10x better than my old Tilt 2.

Yep, it was shown with the 16gb on the Microsoft Employee promo, so it has been assumed that the Verizon version will have the 16gb MicroSD in it.
If it does have the HTC SLCD display like some people are claiming, it might be a worthy phone, as engadget did a compare with the AMOLED display and said they were very close to each other. SLCD was a little poorer in the battery life area but, not that bad.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/spot-the-difference-htc-desires-slcd-versus-amoled/
Only downfall I can see besides no QWERTY keyboard is a 1300mah battery, other WP7 models are giving a 1500+. It could be a major impact on batter life depending on your uses. Just hope it has the FM radio, like claimed but, Verizon is known for cutting it out of phones.
I've been out of a contract for a while, I might get this but, I really wanted a WP7 device with a keyboard, I guess it all depends on what is given at the press release.

Nokia Lumia 710 - good or bad? Coming from Android...

I just sold my HTC Sensation Android phone and looking for a nice replacement. I currently have T-Mobile USA. Obviously the Nokia 710 is really the only option for T-Mobile USA 3G/4G users at this moment; I would love to have the Lumia 800 specs
Anyone willing to chime in with + or - on the 710 please feel free to. Amazon . com has the 710 for 329.00 incl no tax and free shipping.
If there is a better W7 phone out there please let me know.
if I were you, I'd wait on the 900, which should be inbound next month

Your immediate options are the Nokia Lumia 710 and the HTC Radar 4G on Tmo. I don't know what the Lumia 900 4G LTE will mean for future Tmo deployment but maybe that was why that was suggested. That won't help you now though.

I've had the Radar since mid-December. Love it. I've been really surprised at how much I've fallen for an "entry level" smartphone. Hats off to HTC for making an amazing smartphone at this price point.
Haven't spent much time with the Lumia 710, but I imagine you can't go wrong with either.
I'd like for T-Mo to get some higher end WP devices though

None of these WP phones from T-Mobile have WiFi calling correct? My reception is HORRIBLE and this makes me wonder if a Windows phone would cut it.
I just got the Lumia today. No wifi calling.
But, it's a pretty cool phone. So far I'm loving it. It seems that WP7 doesn't really need the powerful hardware that Android needs in order to run well. Of course, I'm not a game though, so if you are then maybe that might make a difference.
The Lumia is light. It definitely doesn't feel like a high end phone. But it is comfortable to hold and not bad to look at. It's thicker than most newer phones too, but again in my opinion that makes it feel a bit better in the hand.
I've been using Android exclusively since the HTC Evo 4G launched. The UX on WP7 blows it away in my humble opinion. I'd at least try it out!

Great feedback and advice. I pulled the trigger on a new 710 through Amazon Wireless. I have 30 days to return it with a 100% refund.
I don't doubt that this is a solid phone and a good GUI. I won't lie, but part of me might miss all the Android hacking; won't miss the force closes, etc... Lol

I just bought the 710 yesterday at a T-Mobile retail location for $200. If you let them put the $50 Monthly4g plan on with the phone, the register automatically deducts a $150 discount.

That's ok but thanks for the info. I already have an old grandfathered data plan that is capped at 10 gigs so I'm not touching that.
I am however looking at another Lumia on an auction site which might cost me $100 less (white one) - since I can always return the Amazon . com one within the 30 days.
How do you like the phone so far?
I love it so far, my only complaint is coming from an android device I do like the notification system better on android and obviously the app market is superior on android as well (you can find pretty much everything for whatever you are trying to do on android)
Everything else is great, its SMOOTH as butter and everything just feels like it can be done faster on the windows phone. I am sure you will like it unless you are an app whore. lol

SMOOTH is the overall impression I'm getting from all the reviews I've read/watched. People say that ALL the WP phones are smooth, no matter the processor speed/specs, this is very interesting and not Android like at all.
Not really an app whore, but I do like to install/uninstall apps in the quest for what I need.
Mostly I want a phone that is, SMOOTH (check!), good looking (check!) and hopefully reliable (let's see what time tells). Microsoft & Nokia seem to be good bed buddies so far; now what comes next is to be seen.

Grandfathered data plan here as well.
I just had Tmo activate the micro sim that comes with the NOK on my existing account with no changes.
The $50 prepaid 4G thing came on a separate sim (which you can subsequently sell or whatever.)
The 710 works fine (so far) on the stock APN even, which, as you probably know, doesn't fly with Android devices on old data plans.
Thumbs up from me on the phone and the os.
I'm not fleeing Android or anything but there is something to be said for having a speakerphone I can actually hear without having to flash a different libaudio.so and fix permissions every other boot

Is this phone still worth buying?

I currently own a T-Mobile G2x and plan on picking this baby up in a few days from the playstore.
A friend of mine showed me his and I completely fell in love with the screen. I'm also hopeful about the updates being pushed by Google for another year or so.
With that said, is this phone still worth getting with other devices already out like the ONE series and Samsung's S3?
I was intially going to purchase a HTC One S, but can't bring myself to do such a big gamble because of all the hardware and software issues I've read about.
for all that is holy and right, god yes.
i could ramble on what rocks about this phone, but ill keep it small.
its a nexus, so direct updates from google. Large dev community. freaking beautiful screen and physical phone dimensions. oh did i mention kick ass software and dev community
i came from the sprint epic 4g and they were doin some crazy stuff with that phone. with the nexus, i hope to see some awesome stuff.
again so much to put into words. the nexus is worth every cent

Its two issues that keep this or any nexus phone on top
1- direct (fast & unbloated/restrected) updates
2- a huge development base (other phones may have big dev bases, but they cant even compare)

Yes. Good phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Of course it's still worth buying. This is still the best Android phone out there. Galaxy S3 and One X may both be faster, but if you're a casual developer or tech guy, then Galaxy Nexus is the best you can get in terms of software.
Quad-core is overrated on phones and I don't like Galaxy S3's hardware decisions (the hardware keys). Galaxy Nexus has on-screen keys, which are just amazing, I could not go back to a phone without them. I don't like the bells and whistles of Galaxy S3 and One X either (which won't be a problem if you root of course). Their usability features are an overkill and don't work at all times.
Since Galaxy Nexus does come with the best version of Android - native, non-bloated one - and has very good hardware to run anything you throw at it today, then yes, it's the phone to get and the one I've suggested to fellow developers. One of the young developers I know bought it just last week and is loving it.
As everyone else had already mentioned, yes, do it - you won't regret it. I've had mine only a month now and it's freaking amazing. Fast and unbloated, beautiful screen, effortless to root, great battery life.
Best of all we will be first to get jellybean, my friend with the sgs 3 will be on ics until sometime next year. Hehe.

I would say no, if i were to start over this minute... I would get a Razor Maxx over this.
I think a new phone of this caliber and price range should ROCK right out the gate and that the modding community should only (need to) make it even better... in this case it takes the modding to make it close to right with still spotty reception and CRAPPY battery life.
Is the screen beautiful... is the phone fast and with rooting and a lot of extra software does it get the job done? Yes.
But so does the RMaxx without the radio issues and it has boat loads of battery.
I would much rather have a few less bells and whistles of a newer OS and have battery life & radio reliability. I feel the bells and whistles are a lot easier to add on later than the other way around.
I like the phone... don't flame me please... but it has shortcomings
I get excellent battery life... i have never had any issues with the radio either.

Ahh you have the LTE version huh? Quite a few people seem not so happy with that one. However the GSM doesn't have as many issues as the LTE seems to..
I would say do it as well man. It's a much much better device than the G2x and you'll really enjoy it.

Personally, I wouldn't get the Motorola. I'm a developer, and it's giving us a ridiculous amount of trouble when compared to the GS2 or the Nexus.
The nexus is a great terminal, and since they lowered the prices it's hard to beat in the quality/cost ratio.

As you'll see, a vast majority of the people saying "don't get it" are those with the Verizon LTE version.
To be blunt, the CDMA version of any nexus is going to be an afterthought.
Moreover, LTE is a battery-drain in comparison to UMTS/HSPA+.
If you get the Galaxy Nexus, get the HSPA+ one from the Google Play Store.
I currently have the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus. Does my battery tend to get drained fast? Yea, although most of the time it's not an issue, I work in an office where I get to keep it plugged in most of the time. If I am planning on being out all day I always keep an extra battery, it's really not that difficult to carry one.
Does my signal tend to suck? Yea, sort of. I hardly ever make calls so I can't really notice there, although I do tend to get a lot of dropped calls but i never know which side they are coming from. My data is amazingly fast when it works right but too many times it says 4G but nothing is going on, so I have to turn the data off and back on to get it working again.
With all that said, I've had this phone since December and I still absolutely LOVE this phone! I still look at the screen and think "wow that's cool". I still show it off to people, I still love using it to pay with Google Wallet.
However, I have recently decided to get rid of it. I will be giving it to my friend, because I just ordered the GSM one from the Google Play store! I'm so sick and tired of Verizon so I want to try the whole prepaid services thing till I find something that works best for me with a service that doesn't treat me like I'm trying to steal from them because I have the unlimited data package THEY gladly offered me years ago. What ever happened to treating older customers better??
There are a few of us that jumped ship from the G2x here now, I don't think we made the wrong choice.
Plus we'll be getting Jelly Bean soon!
Just like you, I think the screen got me. That and stable ICS. I loved my G2x but after hanging around my friends with 4.3 or 4.5inch screens... I felt... inadequate...
Haha, just kidding, but I did want a bigger screen. I'm really happy with this phone now and I think I will be for a while.

Software keys to me are a waste of screen real estate. There is no advantage to having them. I remove them and use LMT because I want the extra screen space. Using LMT is not as quick as having the buttons there but worth the sacrifice.
The GNEX has the space at the bottom of the device to fit keys there and I wish they would have or added them as well and given the choice to use on which one we want to use.
