Android Spy Software Concerns

After surfing the web a bit, I came across a few notorious Android Spy Software applications that could run in your background without you knowing. It is not visible and cannot be detected. I have read that that the only way to eliminate and uninstall the program is through a re-installation of the operating system. With that said, I have been suspicious of my brother for installing this on my HTC EVO. I let him toy with my phone while I showered without thinking of the repercussions for 5-7 minutes.
As bad as it sounds, he is the type that likes to be in control of electronics so that if things get a turn for the worst in our brotherly relationship, he can rely on electronic controls to do any type of damage (banking information, passwords, etc.).
I just spoke with a worker at a Sprint repair store right before they closed for the day and I'm wondering if Sprint can do an OS re-install. Also, is the OS re-install safe to do (does it truly keep the phone factory and completely in-tact)? Is it common?
Tell me if I need to clarify more.

just do a factory reset, it wipes everything.

That was my initial route to deal with this issue (Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset), unless there was another way to actually hard reset the phone. I'd be glad to know if there was.
The thing about Android Spy Software is that it is untraceable and uninstallable unless the OS is re-installed. Soft resetting the phone will not resolve the issue.
Any other ideas? And, is there a way to hard reset the phone?

unless you rooted your phone and the software is embeding it's self in part of the nand(unlikely and not possible without root(i think)), nothing will survive a factory reset. If you really want to wipe it then just root and install a custom rom, then lock your phone lol. Also, no offence, but your brother sounds like a real a$$hat.

That is the way to hard reset the phone. The only thing I think it doesn't wipe is the SD card, so I would wipe that, then the phone, you know how to format the sd card with windows?

I know indeed know how to wipe my SD card using Windows. Correct me if I'm wrong: Start > My Computer > *right-click SD card* > Format..
What's the instructions to hard resetting the android device, if you don't mind me asking?

Not gonna lie you sound SUPER paranoid but like everyone else stated if you do a factory wipe it will get rid of anything or if you are THAT worried download a RUU its the same thing sprint would do while laughing at your paranoid ass in the back room

It all started back when we were children emerging into teens. My brother started with Neopets and slowly began scamming kids of their neopoints through false logins and other obvious ploys to trick children. As we entered high school, he and his friend began getting intrigued with developing viruses and spyware as a game to trick one another into falling into each others' traps and obtain each other's data. Me and my brother were on bad terms several times before due to his state-of-mind that being a bigger brother means being able to have full control of the younger siblings' lives, including me and my sister. He began restricting access to general surfing, such as Digg, Reddit, and social networking sites in general. Then, my brother began loosening up and allowing for it, but told us that he would keep keylogs going through router control and had access to login informations as well as chat histories with local friends.
Perhaps, I am being paranoid. I don't know.

The site is an attempt to scare you and sell you their Mobile Spy software, sounds like it worked.

You haven't a thing to worry about.. Just make sure "Install from unknown sources" isn't checked and I highly doubt you'll ever have a problem..

Thanks for empathizing.
After I realized of any theoretical repercussions of allowing him access to my phone for a few minutes while I was in the shower, I immediately went and did a factory data reset, which I believe to be a hard reset.
I also made sure the "Install from unknown sources" was always unchecked.
Me and my brother previously had bad blood. His intentions of being controlling have put his past girlfriends in a bad state of mind. Recently, he has made one of his past girlfriends (at the moment, he was dating her), re-surface her history of self-mutilation. He made her move from Iowa (I think) to live closer to him near our university. She was too late to enroll and after a few months of being with him, she got scared of his controlling attitude and uncontrollable fits of rage and outlashes. She later on during the relationship hid under beds instead of sleeping on them and kept cutting her arm and fingers. Her mother was so outraged that she made a plane ride from Iowa to Kansas just to take her back and my brother hid himself the day she arrived. He was scared of her mother and what would happen if she got her fingers on him.

The site was for spyware (Android Spy Software), not against spyware. They're trying to sell it in order to install the application and spy on others without their knowing. My concern is to remove it, so there's no incentive for me to buy their product as it would not benefit my case.

it can be in other partitions other than data
i have spyware on my phone AND computer from my ex and of course my phone was rooted so she got it in there DEEEEP in my /dev folder and it is EVERYWHERE. im pretty screwed. time for new phone and computer.. she also managed to get a key logger on my touchscreen phone.. weird huh

Froyo Reward if Found?

Hi all,
Using Froyo on my Kaiser and now its saying at the unlock screen "REWARD IF FOUND Please call xxx-xxx-xxxx (looks like an American number)
Im sure my phone isnt stolen as i distinctly remember buying it lol.
I dont want to give the number out incase some dude get pranked.
On another note, does anyone know how to adjust the touchscreen as the touchscreen adjust app just crashes and ive tried reseting screen to factory default as well.

Ok guys this is getting worse now, is anyone experiencing this?
It now says "This phone belongs to (looks like a Dutch name) and then their number.
The phone cant launch any applications and I am unable to get into fix permissions, clear dalvik cache etc because it doesnt stop there when loading, it just goes straight past and doesnt give me a chance!
Ive tried reloading another nbh on it and still the same.

Try loading another build on it.
Seriously, this is strange behaviour, but flashing another nbh will not change this, that'll only change the kernel and boot files.
You could also try flashing a stock WM rom, as this will certainly clean out everything on the phone, after that reflash and install android again.

Ive asked this in the past but, is there anyway to save the txts, its just everytime I switch, i have to clear our data too as it seems to cause issues as well.
Saving a backup saves all data and program data, which I believe causes problems.

I use Astro to backup apps (Menu>Tools>Application Manager/Backup)
And either MyBackup or Titanium backup for everything else.

Phone back on and off??????

ok recently when im using my evo, and i do some multitasking, the freaking phone keeps turning off and restarts itself, at the beggining i thought ok maybe it frost or something, but now every other day im using it and im in the internet and facebook and other apps, it freezes for a bit and restarts itself. which is annnnoyyyying me cuz i loose everything i was doinggggg....ANY SOLUTIONS WHATS THE PROBLEM, IS IT THE PHONE???

Are u rooted.... if u are have u tried other roms with multiple wipes before the flash? Also my old evo did that after i rooted it and i could not find a fix but luckily i broke the screen an got a new one that dosent have that issue!
i forgot to ask are u saying a full reboot or just to the boot screen?

My first guess would be that you deleted something that the system needs to run. I believe you cannot delete friendstream, calender, etc some stupid apps that you might believe are completely useless but somehow HTC integrated them into the system as necessary system files.
Also did you fiddle with your SetCPU or kernals? Using setcpu to alter your CPU frequency can result in system crashes and different kernals have different set vcores. If the vcore is too low for your chip it does not have enough juice to operate properly and therefore crashes.
If you are stock then I'm not sure what it could be...

no this phone is not rooted (itz cuz i dont know how too lol), and its exactly how it came when i first got it,
the only things im running is
launcher pro plus as my default launcher. and just normal widgets like fancy widget and custom icons nothing major.
everything works perfect, but it keeps restart itself after a do alot of multitasking, cuz usually a app will get the "Force close" when its not working but for me it just freezes and restart itself , it goes to the "Sprint logo & 4g start up" just like how it would do when you first start your phone, the only thing is doesnt do is that it doesnt shot the HTC EVO 4G IN THE BEGGINING, JUST THE SPRINT AND 4G LOGO, than everything reloads itself on the screen.

Interesting... Have you scanned your phone for any malware? Perhaps there is something there that should not be.
Here is what I would do:
Factory reset and run the phone stock without any apps for a day. If you still have issues - switch phones ASAP.
If you do not have issues after the reset, start installing one app at a time till you find the one that is buggy.

I'm really surprised your phone is not rooted. I was going to guess you were OC'd just a little too high. My Dad had similar problems with his unrooted EVO before the 2.2 update. I never narrowed it down but I think it was a problem with Beautiful Widgets. I loaded a bunch of non-root apps on his phone (LP, handcent, BW, etc.), trying to set him up, and he was plagued with reboots so he wiped it all and went back to 100% stock. I still can't convince him to root.

Its a combination of things really.
1) HTC is not known for having the best build quality. Motorola, for example, is light years ahead.
2) The Android marketplace is not regulated like the Appstore. You will frequently get force closed apps because 1) Apps are regulated by the devs, not Google and 2) there is just a huge abundance of Android phones with many differences between them.
Your phone should not be resetting itself. A force close is different than a reboot. I would call HTC/Sprint and ask for a different phone. Might want to add the fact that none of your friends Evos do this so it is singled out to yours specifically.

My 2 cents:
Don't root with a problem already present. 99% of the members here will not be able to help you with any of the issues you might run into. Only the developers will be able to help with real issues. That being said, since you already have a problem the worst thing you can do is void your warranty by rooting.

This is not accurate..
80% of the members here ARE able to help, but 90% of those members will choose not to if you are rude and disrespectful like some other people choose to be.
Rooting your phone may very well fix your problems.
It may not help at all, but many of the roms available are far more stable than stock.
Uninstall all of your non-stock apps and see if the problem persists. If it does not then you know it was a software problem and you can either take the plunge and root and go from there, or reinstall your apps one by one and see when you start having problems again. If you uninstall all non-stock apps and you still have issues then you may have a hardware problem in which case you should try to get your ohone replaced especially if you are still in your 30 days.
Keep in mind that even if you root and technically void your warranty a) your warranty being void is at the discretion of the CS rep you talk to and b) rooting does NOT void your insurance and your insurance covers manufacturing defects at no cost to you.
Try to learn some basic troubleshooting habits and avoid things like: homophobic comments, advising members to kill themselves, excessive swearing, calling people trolls when you are clearly being a troll yourself, and you will get all the advice you ask for.
Unrevoked has been pulled temporarily for some bugfixing so rooting 2.2 is actually not possible right now until they re-release it, or you find a copy of Unrevoked 3 somewhere (which is a bad idea, only use an official copy made available by the Unrevoked team) so take some time to read up, ask questions and understand some of the fundamentals of what you are getting into before you do something like break your wifi and not realize it's an easy fix then come on here and freak out.
Rooting is intimidating before you do it the first few times, but if you follow the guides to the letter and stay calm you'll be just fine. Just don't forget the staying calm part. There isn't much you can do to your phone that is irreversible, it's just a matter of preparing for potential problems and knowing what steps to take to recover from them.
If you are remotely inclined to learn how to root your phone then do it!! But only if you have enough time to devote to what will soon become your new hobby/obsession, it's that much fun

No offense, but why is this still an issue? If OP did a factory reset, which is assumed to bring the phone back to a clean stock, and this problem still persists then the obvious solution would be to get a replacement. Yes, a replacement could take some time to arrive, but if this is a hardware issue, any amount of troubleshooting on the software side wouldn't matter. Then again, maybe you have a faulty micro-sd card and could be simple as swapping for a new one. Anyways, if you did a MSL/factory reset to a clean slate and your phone still intermittenly reboots, go get a new one. Good luck.

I think what he meant was weather or not this still happens without installing launcherpro at all, when you're just running the default launcher. Also, does it still happen if you remove/uninstall all of your widgets/apps? If yes, and this still happens with no widgets running, and no apps installed, you may want to talk to Sprint about an exchange.

[Q] Phone Freezing Over Night

Apologies if this has been posted before, I did look but couldn't seem to find the exact same issue.
I've had my phone for just under a year, no real problems. But late last month it restarted over night and since then it started freezing every night when I left it charging. At first I thought it was crashing but the charge light would still be on but all buttons would be unresponsive. The only thing I could do to regain control of my phone was to remove the battery.
I contacted HTC who suggested factory reset...which I don't really want to do. As my phone was only freezing once a day (over night) it wasn't all that bad. To be honest I thought it was an issue with it charging.
For reasons I can't remember, I removed an app that I never used; it was using 2mb space and couldn't be put on the SD. Once removed, the freezing stopped happening and there was much rejoicing...until last night.
I decided to download another app and the freezing happened again over night. I've since removed that app but here's the rub, why is this happening?
The fact it's happening whenever I download more apps to my phone seems to point to a memory issue but my phone has 1.6GB on the SD and 53mb on the phone itself.
I still haven't tried a factory reset and as I've had it less than a year, HTC said I can return it; but there's no guarantee this will fix it and I like my little phone, so if there's a way I can resolve this issue I'll rather do that before trying more drastic measures.
I hope someone can help.

Are you rooted? If that's the case, and, you are charging the phone when it is switched off, what you are experiencing is a known bug.
Also, although unrelated, it is really not recommended to charge your battery overnight or for extended periods. Charge only till it is full.

Nope, not rooted. Just a plain, bog-standard out the box Wildfire.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the charging though Since I bought it (July last year) I had been charging over night on most days but I'll switch to just charging it for a few hours till it's full now.
I guess in case it'll help I'll give a little more info: While charging I leave my phone switched on and I rarely restart my phone unless it drops signal. Only recently with the freezing have I had issues with using it and had to restart it frequently. I'm not a techie person so I've not played around with the phone other than putting on apps, where possible I put them onto SD. My phone is unlocked and I use it on the O2 network.

make a factory reset bro. it tells u whether the issue is with hardware or software. kept under charging mode just heats up the phone by a little level. this dont normally freeze the phone.
but if u r downloading something with data connection, or bluetooth, or wifi and kept charging overnight, then the battery gets overheated heavily which freezes the phone. it is quite normal and is experienced by people who keep overnight downloads.
and further there may be application conflicts in ur phone, which make it slow and freeze. i expect this is the issue with u.
if u r sure that u r not using any data connections, then i suggest u to factory reset ur phone. before that backup all the data. i dont understand what makes u from not doing the factory reset.

I would have thought if this was an application issue it would have started after installing this dodgy app and also continue until I unistalled. This hasn't been the case. When it started happening I hadn't installed anything other than updates for weeks or maybe months. During the week while it was having this issue, I had installed 1 app (Photoshop).
It has only frozen once during the day, right after work; that was the time I finally thought I'll have to factory reset. So I was writing down all my apps in a notepad so I knew what I had and where they were (I'm fussy with my screen setup). I decided to remove 2 apps I never used (8Pen and Photoshop), I thought I'll leave it 1 night just in case and that night though it never froze, so I didn't reset.
Since then it's been working fine for 3 weeks till last night when I downloaded another app. So it seems random, it's not associated with a particular app and comes and goes.

u r worrying about loosing data on factory reset. but do u know that u can backup each and everything on the phone including the apps downloaded from market.
ok, i will try to give a software solution. first uninstall all the file managers and app managers in your phone. then go to market and download "ANDROID ASSISTANT". this little app has many features. explore it and u will know its potential. it has a nice option called QUICK BOOST. when u press this quick boost on a heavily stuck phone, u will feel like ur phone got a new life. it makes the phone response faster in seconds.
and further it has auto boost option, which can be set to a minimum of 10minutes. this auto boost will help u in preventing the freeze issue. hope it works. the present version of android assistant is 2.3.3

How do you backup apps? I know they'll appear in the download list but I'll rather not have to redownload them all, plus I have a few not from the marketplace. I've read that during a factory reset even apps which are apparently "saved" on the SD card are removed because they're not 100% saved onto it. So if you know of a way to back them up I would be most grateful.
Thanks for the Android Assistant.apk too, I'll be sure to look into that! Though I always thought anything that force closed apps wasn't always good - I previously used Task Killer and removed it after being told it could be the route of a force close email app issue I was getting.
Edit: Just got back home and during the journey my phone had frozen!! I had hoped it was a space issue but I've not downloaded any new apps and have even removed some during the day. So my previous thought that this was some how connected to storage on my phone must be wrong. So what on Earth can it be? It's not constant, in fact, like I said I've had this phone for 9 months give or take and it's been fine. So why now and why only sometimes does it freeze?

yes freezing also happens when there is very low phone free memory. when ur apps get filled in phone and keep on decreasing its memory, it is more likely that ur phone gets freezed. its always better to keep a 30MB free phone memory. remember data and cache also use phone memory, so the free memory will be generally unpredictable with minor errors. have u got any idea of a windows pc freezing. a windows pc freezes if there is some errors in registry. that is the reason why i have suggested u to make factory reset first to eliminate the software issues.
u asked me a solution to backup ur apps, right.
firstly i wanna introduce u about the backing up of applications.
android applications will be in the .apk file format and u know this. this .apk file is an installable archive just like .exe of windows OS. opening the .apk files from a file manager installs the program files of that application. but when u download the applications from android market, u will not get the .apk files. the android market installs the program files directly. but we can still create an .apk file from these program files and app managers will do that function. both the files im attaching u below will do that function.
here im attaching u two applications (.apk files)
one is APP CONTROL. i recommend u to use this. it can be used with android assistant installed. both of them work fine. the APP CONTROL version i gave u is an older version and is a full version. A newer version of APP CONTROL is available in the android market, but it is not free. so i strongly recommend u to use this. it has a great feature to backup all ur apps at a single click. the apps backed up by it will be saved as .apk files under the path
MEMORY CARD/backups/apps
i recommend u to back up all ur phone and mem card apps at a time with a single click. explore this APP CONTROL.
i dont want to give a detailed explanation of the other file ANDROID APP MANAGER, because i wont recommend u to use this. im just attaching u this because of only one reason, that APP CONTROL is presently not a full version. using of it is entirely at your personal intrest.

I took your advice and did a factory reset - backed everything up so it wasn't as painful as I first thought it would be. Managed to reinstall everything and so far so good (touch wood) but the original issue was sporadic and so only time will tell.
I have noticed since the reset that my phone memory, which was 50mb before, is now 100mb. So hopefully this will mean that I'm not forced to limit what I download.
Such a shame the Wildfire doesn't have more memory

that 50 MB and 100 MB may be due to app memory + cache memory. if u have interrupted the download android apps from market, and have every downloading app partly downloaded and interrupted. then that partly downloaded apps go to the cache memory of MARKET application. u can try and check this.
similarly there will be cache memory for every application. i expect all those cache memories got built up and ate 50 MB of ur phone memory. if it is so, it says that how vigourously u have used ur phone regarding applications.
these cache memories wont get cleaned just on restrating phone, and u should manually clean them either through the phones inbuilt process or through the applications having keywords of cache cleaner.
there is somewhat that i dont like in android apps. which is the application doing extra functions other than its name. now a days, u can see many file managers in android market. and those file managers suppose to have the fuction of explorer of android file system. but they will have additional features like combined app manager, cache cleaner, uninstaller, installer.
this makes the different applications conflict with each other and slow down the os. thats the thing i hate here. i have to choose priority in apps, and sometimes need to avoid nice apps due to that reason.

Well, my phone has just froze again Sent an email to HTC (already had an email chain going with them so I just updated my ticket) and asked them what to try next.
On the plus side at least they won't keep telling me to factory reset!

HOPE U HAVE ELIMINATED THE SOFTWARE ISSUE
OK. hope the phone froze without even single app being installed.
suppose if the freeze was a software issue, then u have backed up the app causing freeze. let us think this like a virus. if u had reinstalled that app again, ur phone is likely to freeze again.
i haven't heard of virusses if android os, but i have seen many antivirus programs for android. even the great kaspersky recently added its support for android. the existance of antivirus programs proove the existance of virusses.
so, try to remember if u have installed any backed up app frm mem card.
Im personally guessing that ur phone freeze was not a software issue. ur phone might be having hardware issues.
giving to a service centre might solve the problem, but im not pretty sure. and moreover, if they update ur phone to froyo, u cant even root. (i dont remember what ur phone is on now). and even u cant make those service centre guys see ur problem, as u dont know when it freezes. i expect, what all they are gonna do to ur phone is factory reset, or reinstall the os.

[Q] windows live id service unavailable issue

Hi Guys when i try to download any app thru marketplace, i get "windows live id service unavailable" error pop up. i've seen somewhere that the only choice is to reset the phone, but i've too many things inside n i'm too lazy to backup... anyway to sort this w/o hard-reset the phone??

The service is probably down for maintenance or...for a problem. This does occurs occassionally with any service...and should be back up by the time you read this.
Gosh, I hope you don't take this as proof that Microsoft is abandoning the Lumia 900 and Nokia in general.

actually the problem presisted for 2days, but once i hard reset the phone yesterday, everything goes back to normal, this is actually the 2 time i've done this with the phone... abit frustrating, but still, i like the phone for the design

that is interesting. That should not happen at all. Unless you're logging in , or attempting to log in with a different id, marketplace should use your core login. If you remember, if this happens again, let me know. I have some contacts in WP support at ms.
