The droid/milestone used magnets to detect the dock, but the google car dock uses bluetooth and doesn't even use the usb cable (it uses the gold 3 bits on the bottom of the phone). I too wished you could do the same, but my brodit holder fit the phone so badly, I've decided to shell out and try the original car dock - just waiting for it to come.
Thanks for the reply, so the million dollar question is how does the desire's dock sense when its dropped in the cradle, any ideas people ? I read somewhere forgot now doh !! that it might be a case of grounding one of the data lines in the usb cable, can anyone confirm this ?
I'd like to know this too.. Dockmode/Cardockmode
Look at this thread - probably the id pin, but i need someone with the same charger and a multimeter to check some things
I have 2 chargers (work & home) that I use that plug directly into the wall, the one at home brings up Navigator where the one at work doesn't, so it must have to do with the pins in the USB connector.
Can you do some measurements with a multimeter on that charger that opens the navigator???
oh this sounds like what we wanna hear, my betting is one of the usb data lines gets grounded as ive mentioned before !!! plz test to see if more than one of the pins in the usb plu is being grounded .... pretty plz !! heh
Hey Guys,
yes it looks like the Desire can be fooled into thinking its connected to a car dock, my car charger seems to do it when the usb is not properly inserted.
I suspect HTC might release a car dock for the Desire. If not some one should really monopolise on the fact that this can be done.
I will be experimenting with it soon but currently have way to much uni work to finish for the end of the month
Ok went into the workshop and stripped the desire usb lead, I tried every combo of pulling the data lines to ground even both together, the installed navigator.apk didnt kick in , but looking at a reatime system dump i could see usbconnected and type(0) , type (1), type(2) had been triggered, on the differnt combo's i tested, why its not kicking in is anyones guess, maybe cas the Incredible navigator.apk is strictly configured for that device, guess the Incredibles navigators.apk has to be recompiled with new settings !!
I will try it with the cardock.apk tomorrow ripped from the nexus we might have more luck with that me thinks !!! fingers crossed !!!
Keep up the good work! I FINALLY get my Desire delivered tomorrow (after waiting 4.5weeks for stock!!!), so I can have a look at this too... let us know how you get on.
I'm interested in a homedock/multimediadock trigger as well as the car dock trigger. It should be included in the Desire as well as the cardock.
Here's an emulator that could be helpful in the process of developing a dockapp or finding out what's really happening..
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-geekherd-dockenabler-pBmD.aspx
I'll try to find the homedockingtrigger if there is any to use in my homemade dockstation
Hi
Wonder if there has been any progress on this? I'm keen to hack my Brodit active cradle to be a fake real dock!

Same here! Any progress?!
after upgrade to froyo, i pluged my car charger in my desire and the car mode icon showed up, even when the other end of the charger is NOT pluged in the lighter. I use a charger for my old HTC Diamond and added a little thing that convert a mini USB port (wich is on diamond) to a micro USB. And the cable on my charger is too short for me so it has been moded (extended) by my self, there is only two wire in the cable for power, so there must be something in the plug itself that triggers the car mode. if only plug the converter into Desire, nothing happened
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to ground, as indicated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744636
My charger doesnt fit well and i just came to terms with this but it has got worse the last two weeks. It plugs in and the led lights up but it doesnt charge sometimes, it says it is charging but an hour later and the battery goes down 5% ish. Also it only connects when the phone sits face up and the cord hangs down as in it must sit on the edge of the table for it to charge. I tried my friends Droid cord and it was a snug fit. do i have an insurance claim on my hands?
You can try getting the cable swapped, but honestly I think the amount of hassle you would go through would just not be worth it. If the problem was with your phone then I would 100% definitely get the phone replaced, but if the problem is only with the cable, I'd take the path of least resistance and just buy a new cable out of pocket. They really aren't expensive if you know the right place to get them.
I use this cable here with my Aria and it works great: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5458&seq=1&format=2
It is only $3.13 shipped (to my address), and it's 2 feet longer than the original cable which I like because I thought the original one was too short. Never had a problem with it charging my Aria. I know it seems too good to be true, but the quality really is just as good as a $20+ cable you'd find at a local store.
I ran into the same problem with an Aria I bought off of Craigslist. It would kind of charge at first, then it gave up altogether. I found that the end that plugged into the phone had been slightly squished by the previous owner. I just went to Staples and bought a Staples branded MicroUSB cable, it's six feet long and works fine. Granted, it wasn't ebay-cheap but I got the problem handled same day, no screwing around. The nice thing about this cable is it's just as flexible as the original, unlike the MicroUSB charge/sync cables that come with Blackberry phones and the extra length makes it a little more versatile.
Don't mean to resurrect an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one.
My connection is getting worse every day. It is very aggravating. I'll plug in at night time and wake up to find my phone didn't charge at all. I have to put the cable in at a slight angle to get it to connect.
Using adb and just any file transfer on the computer is almost impossible.
I use the original cable, and sometimes my brother's Captivate cable--both are just as bad.
And the AT&T car charger is a joke. So I think it is the phone, not the cables.
i find that the motorola(backflip) usb doesnt fit snug(still charges & transfers fine, a little slower)
May be just a bit too rough with this little phone
Finally had enough of the cable problem, so I decided to figure out whats wrong. Turns out, I ended up pulling out about a cubic centimeter of dust and lint from in the port (way down in there, a quick glance and it didn't look as bad as it really was.)
Works like a charm, now!
Brivette, glad to see you fixed your issue!
For future reference,
The MicroUSB cable that has become the new standard contains 2 prongs on the end of it. This prong is responsible for ensuring it stays locked into the connector.
The newer MicroB connector is rated at a higher use cycle than the old MiniB type, which is why current devices are moving to it as a standard. It is also designed so that the cheaper cable will bear the wear and damage, rather than the device. The usual culprit is the two latch pins at the top of the male connector which tend to wear and bend eventually causing the cord to become "flaky" or fickle (for a lack of a better term). This is usually the cause of most people's woes. However often times the connections from inside the cable may wear and short out, causing the cord to become dysfunctional. Before sending your phone in for a replacement, I highly recommend trying a second cable.
If changing the cord doesn't work, the problem most likely lies with the phone. While it is possible that the PCB mount has come disconnected from the board, it is more often than not likely that the port has become clogged with debris. So before sending your phone in for service, check the port and ensure that the port is clear and clean of obstruction.
This also goes for charging or data transfer. Sometimes issues with data transfer can arise out of a bad cable. This often happens when people wrap their cord too tightly or kink it, which causes signal interference. It also occurs with frequent use and wear and tear, which is normal.
Take good care of your cord, and it'll be there to last you a long time.
Do any of you guys and gals know of an aftermarket cable that will work with the captivate. I lost the original one that came with the phone. Have since bought two different chargers, one from the att store (zero charger), and they charge the phone but don't put it on USB mode like the original one did when I plug it to a laptop.

All you need is a standard MicroUSB to USB cable. Make sure it's a standard cable, and not a "charge only" cable though.
A bit of advise, generally if you buy a cable that isn't a Samsung USB cable, you're going to have to take a razor blade to your new cable and cut away some of the rubber around the MicroUSB plug. You'll see that untrimmed, you might have a hard time getting the cable secured in the phone's port.
Thanks man. I actually just noticed the "charging only cable" written on the tag on the cable. Now I know what to look for. And you're right, the one I bought from a gas station was always popping out. The one from att fits like a glove though.

All it takes is a razor blade or something similar, and a few seconds. I use a bunch of generic USB cables which all have fat plug heads. Trimming a little of the rubber off and they all work perfect.
Weird, for some reason my original cable from ATT now is really loose, I have to like set the phone down a certain way to keep it charging/plugged in.
The only cables that now do fit snuggly are the ones from my external mini hard drives with the fat head, haha, I wonder why...my captivate still looks normal, can't figure it out.
I guess I should see if my normal cable fits with my externals or falls out of those too, if so it would be the cable. But it seems weird that the fat headed cables fit snuggly with my captivate, so that makes me think maybe its the captivate.
long winded stupid post, sorry.
i bought a blackberry cable from best buy... data and charging... 16 bucks. but when ever your puppy ate your data cable in the middle of the night and you're phone is at 30% battery, ya tend to pay for it...

Check out www all4cellular DOT com
They have the OEM Samsung Captivate (U.S./Edison) Wall Charger and USB Charging+Data Cable for $6.95 + $2 Shipping.
The item number is "eta0u60jbe". But this item # includes BOTH the USB Wall Charger (# ETA0U60JBE) AND the USB-to-Micro USB data/charging Cable (# ECC1DU2BBE)!
I bought two of these and they are EXACTLY like the original Charger and ~5ft. USB Cable that comes with the Captivate. They are OEM/Samsung-branded and labeled and are not Chinese-made knock-offs. I am in SoCal and received them within a few days of ordering.
Here's a direct link:

I had similar issues, till I realized that the problem was with the sliding door for the microUSB port - make sure it is pushed all the way back (you may hear a click) - its only then that all my MicroUSB cables fit w/out any modifications to them.
as always YMMV.
hope that helps
I second the Monoprice.com recommendation. I buy ALL my cables there. The heads on their micro USB cables are too large to plug into the Captivate unmodified, but I used a Dremel to fix that.
Both of my Monoprice cables are going strong, in contrast with my OEM cable, which started out excellent, but is now so loose as to not maintain a connection unless the phone and cable are precisely arranged.

I have the same problem with the original cable not fitting snug. Yes, the door is open all the way...until the click. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one have the problem. Been doing it since day 1. I'm afraid to cut any bit of it off since its already slimmed down and there isn't much left to cut

I have a 1009 model. Assuming that means it was manufactured Sept,2010. Now to find a microUSB
We have some micro USB 5' Cables coming in Monday. If they are like the sample they not only fit the Captivate properly, but when plugged into our new Car Plug ->USB (2100mA) adapter, my Captivate shows "Charging (AC) ".
We originally brought in the Hi-Power USB car adapter so iPad & Tablet customers could both run & charge at the same time. We have had enough request from customers looking to use it with Smart Phones, that I had to find the best matching cable.

Monoprice...ALWAYS!!
As mentioned, get your cables from monoprice. I mean, you just can't beat a usb cable for $2. If it needs trimmed, I usually just use a razor knife/box cutter to remove the bulk, and it works perfectly. I actually had to order a 25ft. VGA cable from them a couple of days ago...$8. Seriously. Definitely the cheapest place I've seen to buy cables.
Got my 900 Yesterday and realized his morning that the charge cable had popped out overnight. Upon inspection I discovered that the shape of the hole in the Silicone cover I received (AT&T is giving away $100 of accessories in Illinois on top of everything else, WOOT!) is not the same as the shape of the micro-USB cable that came with the phone. I thought it was a genuine Nokia case, I don't have the box because the were kind enough to dispose of it.
I'm curious if anyone else has run into this? The charge cable is fairly oval shaped while the hole in the case is more of a basic trapezoid /__\.
Has anyone else run into this or do your hole and cable shape match up, if so are you matched oval or trapezoid?
you know my car charger won't fit and I have a Samsung Micro-USB cable that I use to plug it into my computer and that one is super lose. But then I use some third party no name micro-USB cable that I use to charge and that one fits perfectly fine. Have you tried the actual cable that came with the phone? Usually those Nokia cables are high quality.
Yeah, it's the stock cable that came with the phone that won't fit. It's quite secure without the case on, but pops off when using the case due to the difference in hole shape.
If Nokia would have centered the usb port it would be less an issue. Very annoying to me as well so I took the dremel to the case. The case is so tight I don't want to have to remove it constantly.
Yeah, I noted this in my review of the L900. I am tempted to carve out part of the gel case, but it would probably be noticeable from the front of the phone. They should have centered the micro-USB socket on the top of the phone.
The one thing I miss from my Surround is the indicator light. Not for missed calls (I don't get many). But liked knowing the phone was charging/charged. Now I have to power on to be sure the cable didn't move.

The rocketfish micro USB data cable will for sure work and latch on and some other rocketfish micro USB products (such as the car charger). I had the same problem with all my existing micro USB cables and I stopped by best buy and plugged in all of their micro USB cables into my phone with the gel case to see which ones would work.
I have that exact same case and all USB cables I have tried fit perfectly. Not sure why you're having this problem...

Mine is oval, and while the plug goes in fine it does not seat flat to the phone. So it's up 1/16" and that could be enough for ot to wobble out if you touch the phone while charging.
I walk around the house with a short 8" USB cable and portable USB charger. Nokia has popped out a few times. Surround never did.

Ditto here. Same problem. USB stays secured enough though. I have a Samsung USB that's a little thinner and fits better more secure. Not completely a nuisance though.
What's a good charger to connect to the One without putting stress on the USB port?
It might be a silly question, but I have a Samsung GS2 right now with a totally broken USB port from very frequent connection/disconnection of the charger. It *probably* won't happen on my replacement phone, but just to be on the safe side I was looking for either wireless charging or a dock of some sort, for my next device.
A lot of phones are starting to support Qi charging out of the box, but I know that can't be done on the One thanks to the metal housing. The Xperia Z series has a nice solution with (waterproof!) external contact pads that attach to a magnetic cable or desktop dock.
Does anybody make something like this for the One? Even if it has to connect through USB (and it sounds like it does...) a good dock would make sure the USB plug connects squarely to the socket and would minimize any lateral stress on the port.
Great point, I've always came close to ruining my port and ended up melting an old one (on purpose) so that it was almost a fish hook going into the port with the cable going around the back.
The only thing the iPhone got right. The charge plug that snaps in good.
