Currently I'm trialing SPB BackUp and I must say that I really like it a lot! So far I've had no problems backing up, restoring, and re-connecting the phone with Active Sync as I did previously with Sprite BackUp. The best thing about SPB BackUp is that it allows you to restore everything even when you upgrade your custom ROMs...something that I do several times a day testing different ROMs. I highly recommend this program for those of you who flash custom ROMs on your phone and don't like to rely on PIM and go through re-installing each and every software and settings back on your phone. I'm debating whether to wait for my trial to end or just to buy it now!

Hi. i also use SPB Backup and love it as it restores all my email a/c's and my tx messages. But i was wondering, u mentioned that with spb backup, u dont have to re-install all your apps/programmes each time u flash? can u please give me a tip on how to do this as i have no idea.i only see options for the usual ieim, texts, emails and there is a device option, but with so may sub catogories!....confusing i have a Htc TD2 with custom UDK Rom and manila sense 2.5.
I am a noob so please be patient with me
Thanks in advance.
It depends on if you do a full back-up. If you do then everything you back-up (including your storage card) is backed up unless you specify in options not to back it up. The only thing I don't back-up are previous SPB Back-ups.
To restore everything including programs that you had just do a full restore. If you choose customized restore then all the programs and settings to restore is in the "System Data". Uncheck PIM Data, Emails, and My Documents, and just leave the System Data checked and click next. From there it will restore all your programs and settings you previously had. BUT ONLY if you previously did a full backup or a custom back-up that included System Data.
I've had ZERO problems since using SPB Back-Up with any custom rom so far. I was using a trial Sprite Back-Up but it wasn't successful in restoring with different custom roms. SPB Back-Up also recently had an update with more finger friendly icons and IMO slightly more user friendly.

Thank You. Just tried it and it worked great. Its just that i was curious on how will it do it without me installing the cab files individually and or making a selection of cabs/programmes to install. Programmes such as Sahsimi work from a pre-difined list we creat ourselves and it installs all cabs one after the other. Thats why i was confused. But now i understand. Thank You again for your help and i totally agree with you. SPB Backup is great and would recommend it to everyone!
Take care and happy new year to all @ XDA!!!
Thanks!
Im Packing - thanks for the info. The fear of having to start over again put me off updating my phone. Could never find out for sure that system files and apps were updated.
Following your advice updating to the latest rom went like a dream
Forgive me but I gave some wrong information. FULL BACKUPS do not include storage card. You must do a Customized Backup and check the Storage Card under the System Files box. That will include everything on your storage card, but you can choose, in the menu options, to skip previous backup files so that you don't take up too much room. Also, High Compression on backups seems to work so far. Have not had one problem using high compression vs. normal.

what exactly "system" back up do? does it not overwrite roms settings? and/or system data? which i think would cause problems expecially if you restore it to a rom with different version/build?
hit thanks button before u say thank u . ...
thank u so much man for back up solution . i am going to try now .

I have just moved to a Universal from a Blue Angel, which is WM2003.
I am disappointed with the backup/restore functionality being removed from ActiveSync, I know the storage is non-volatile, but in just a day of use and installing programs I have had to do a hard reset, and am now wishing i had a backup I could restore from. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks..

There are two good backup alternatives, spb backup and sprite backup; The first one make smaller files, the second one is faster. With Sprite backup is possible restore after a rom upgrade.
Although Sprite makes slightly larger backup images and costs US $30 you are better off being able to restore after a ROM upgrade as upgrades do come out frequently and the last thing you want to do is configure ur device from scratch!
Hi,
First of all: Happy New Year!
Over the last couple of days I have updated my Qutie 9000 for the x-th time, but now I am finally happy with the whole thing.
Installed all my tools and applied all skins and tweaks etc. Now I want to make a backup of the entire thing (OS, apps, registry etc.). So I can re-apply this backup after a crash or when I have gone to far in customising my Qutie... believe me... it happens..
Is it possible to make such a backup that you can re-apply? If not, what would be the best approach to take?
Thanks in advance.

use spb backup... it will be optimum for your needs... and you can keep the backed up file on your storage card... so if your uni ever crashes, all you ot to do is to run the backup file....it also supports sequential backing up

Quite a good program indeed. But, does it actually copy everything?
I did the mistake of backing up AKU2 and restore on AKU3.5. Crashed everything. Even if I only choose specific things.
But, nuff said. Good program, if you use it wisely.
Basically is should be a safe options is to restore (if needed) on the same OS version?
So I would only have to restore the ROM and then restore the backup?
I mean... I have a lot of tweaks and use skins on all my apps... will the registry and the applications be restored as they are now?
Thanks.
Please read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278037

yes... you can not use it after upgrade.... for that matter when i upgraded from 3.3 to aku 3.5 and then used it to restore... the system showed aku 3.3 again.... but works great otherwise... have been using it for more thn a yr now
Sprite can restore after a ROM upgrade, SPB cant, provided you follow the instructions in the Sprite FAQ step by step, everything can be restored to the new ROM apart from pop accounts
Sprite it is...
I decided to use Sprite. Works like a charm. Thanks for all your help/advice.
Cheers,

I've been using SPB Backup sucessfully for some time and its been an essential for someone who like to play around with the system as much as I do. I've been trying to find a piece of backup software that will work to produce a full backup with 6.1 as SPBs doent seem to fully work, even with the help of PIMbackup.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you tried sprite backup?
I think that spb backup is the best... but i must affirm that sprite backup offerts more options than spb software (you can restore your data after a rom update)

How can you do that and different roms have different settings, doesn't that effect current rom functionality
I tend to find if you restore a backup with spb backup using different roms but same wm06.1 versions what tends to happen is that you end up with the rom that was backed up... BUT because there may have been different apps cooked in you find errors cropping up with soft resets needed a lot and sometimes major lockups that require hard resets.. And thats my 2 cents... cheers
Same release only

This is the same with sprite backup also.
So, if you want a new rom then only backup contacts and messages as there is no point to backup complete OS... Everything needs to be reinstalled anyway. these programs are just in case of events that require hard resets, no good to backup apps or anything...

I've you restore after a hard reset or a rom upgrade? what app have you used spb or sprite???
with spb if you do a hard reset you can restore all apps you installed and their settings, before your hard reset (but i've tested only with the same rom).
I use SPB Backup. I was saying that the full os backup is only good for HARD RESETS as it puts the complete os, registry settings and apps onto your hermes. If you reflash your os then restore your backup it overwrites the NEW os with the OLD os, however, because the new os probably doesn't have all the apps that the old os had cooked into it you get errors as the os cant find things it requires. Hope that cleared it up instead of smearing everything with mud....

Its also make you have issue with the new now like freezing up and etc. Its just not worth the headache. Look in UC roms it is very little work to reinstall your app. Do a search for UC roms and read up on it. I'm tell is sweet I just did it for the first time it works like a charm.
What is the easiest way to get all of my settings contacts and e-mail settings back on my phone after I do a Rom upgrade?
use a backup utility before you re flash
Will a back up remember all the programs and contacts and mail settings?
I'm by no means an expert, but it was my impression that it was not a good idea to restore a backup onto a new rom. Things are not necesarily in the same place and it can cause problems. That being said i don't really know of any solutions for you.
Haven't tried it yet, but the new Spb Backup v2.0 will restore data between upgrades, don't know about each setting though. On the other hand, if it saves all registry settings and certain files (i.e. ".ini") then everything should be the same.
if you're installing another ROM, you'll do best by reinstalling all your programs. this will ensure that the programs work with the newly installed ROM. i use MS Outlook to backup contacts... backing up email settings depends on what you use for email; if you're using a POP3 account, i suggest you reenter them.... in my opinion, using backup software to reinstall your programs, settings, etc., is risky and may cause unexpected issues. good luck!

Spb Backup has been incredibly buggy for me on my Telus Touch... does it work well for anyone else?
It freezes unless I do this: back up my documents only, turn off the option to create an exe and don't use encryption.
spb back up and ROM upgrade
so,on the telus touch, have you tried the rom upgrade and used spb backup to restore?

Not dumb, there are always questions when you install new software. But, this is another great feature of Spb Backup, it creates self-extracting restore files, with an option to create a copy of the software as well. So install it to your main memory, and have the files kept on your card. Whenever you need to restore, just run the file, you don't even need the app installed. Also includes a desktop sync app.
Rom update
Thanks for the speedy reply,I'm just looking now for any issues doing Rom update with vista 64(Telus tech said there should be no problem, but I've yet to get the same response twice from them)Ok i hope this new update is worth the sweat!

No prob, almost forgot to mention, after restoring the data, your PC will recognize it as it did before. I really like this feature, thought all my data was going to be duplicated.
Hello,
is it possible to make a image of a running WinMo and restore it after testing some other Roms?
A Program like Norton Ghost?
Thanks
try spb backup
A lot of backup software out there, including SPB Backup as mentioned above. Just try searching under 'backup'. However for these to work you would first need to flash back the rom of which you performed the backup on, i.e. If your using Throys V4.1 and perform a backup and then flash Throys R12. To get back to the orginal you would first need to reflash V4.1 and then perform restore using backup software.
Moved to Themes, Applications and Software forum as not related to rom development
I too would be intrested in an imaging software as my company is currently thinking about using win mob devices and it'll be super-sweet if i didn't have to set them all up on their own!!
Turn phone on, install flashing software, flashing company image, job done.

I use spb backup, once you have flashed your rom, installed all apps, done all your personal settings, backup with it.
To restore your phone you just do a hard reset, then browse to a single backup file, click it and spb restores it.
I use it to restore my phone after testing new apps etc.
And when I flash a new rom I do the following :
1. Flash rom
2. Install spb backup and a few safe apps
3. Backup
4. Install rest of apps and register all paid for apps
5. Backup again
6. Change all system settings/personal settings
7. Backup again
8. Re-check settings and make sure everthing works
9. Make final backup
10. Install games
11. Make backup with games on
This way I can easily go back a step if anything goes wrong when tweaking manila etc, and after about a week I delete all backups apart from 9 & 11, so I can easily get rid of any games once I've finished playing them.
You can't deploy a custom image onto multiple handsets with spb backup though, for this you would need sprite/spb cloning software which is considerably more expensive.
Hope I've been of some help, Dave.
