All comments welcome

So is there no one out there can answer or offer advise????
Any recommendations for which wm6.5 rom is most complete, fastest, and upto date etc??

Best rom ...
Now thats a difficult one as its personal preference. i would say shadys rom is the best performer. dheetwares looks the best with manilla 2d interface but emrulez is most untouched true to ms version about. be sure to make sure you read up about flashing your rom first. after a while you will will find one you are happy with. ps if you want a finger friendly keyboard look for qvga ezinput. hope that helps.

Whats the performance like on the shaby rom??? My Orbit has the stock O2 wm6 on... Would you say its faster, more stable and more upto date etc (better camera, wifi etc) or only marginal????? Just curious as to you thoughts...

One final question.... Will my backs simple work if I restore them after a rom upgrade or will I have to reinstall everything???

Faster?

If I am totally honest it has been a long time since I have run any 6.1 rom. In fact the day I got it I flashed it from its default rom so it would support sdhc.
Since going over to 6.5 I would not change back, it is so much easier and nicer to use. As for performance, the rom by Shady seems smooth and works very well, plenty of free memory. Shady, Emrulez, Dheetware etc are all legends and have done a fantastic job delivering these roms and are constantly delivering new roms based on the latest code. They all seem pretty stable and as far as I am aware all are fully functional (wifi, gps, camera, bluetooth etc).
Best thing to do is try it yourself!
Also with regards to backing up. I personally use PimPPCBackup (you will need to find and download the cab) just syncing with Outlook keeps your contacts but loses text messages, other people might be able to offer a better way of doing it.
Hope that helps
Hi a_lai82
Thank you for your reply. And looks like I will be updating very soon...
As to the backup question... What I meant is can a restore a full internal back up or will I have to reinstall everything??? I use Sprite backup to periodically backup the internal storage so am hoping it will be a simply process of just doing a restore after upgrading to a newer rom. If not it will be a pain as have 254 apps installed!!!!!!!
regards
Lohtse
with pim backup you can specify to backup files as well but i dont think it does app. i have heard you can set it up so that when you reinsert sd card after flashing it will auto install cabs but i havent tried that myself. btw camera software seems a bit better. sorry about lack of paragraphs and punctuation as i am on my phone!

I don't know of any way to retain all your programmes. Some apps on your sd card will just run if you add a shortcut in the start menu however anything that is installed on the phone memory, or that requires registry entries will need to be reinstalled.
Unless someone out there knows differently.
That also puts me off flashing my rom, however when trialing Android on my phone it wiped my SD card so I lost all my apps! Since then I only every reinstall about half a dozen apps.
In short if you have your phone running well you can generally add apps to make it do most the stuff in 6.5 such as touch flo. SPB mobile shell 3.5 (paid app / 15 day free trial) is an excellent app works on the original rom and allows for easy use and a bit of an android style home page. Coupled with ezinput you will hardly every use your stylus which was the goal for me.
Hope that helps.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
This really putting me of the upgrade..... with over 250 apps installed I don't fancy the reinstalling.... was hoping that sprite backup would just copy all the data back(apps, settings, registry etc ) and would work... Hmmmmm may just not bother...

Well I have never used Sprite Backup, but there website implies that it will backup all your applications as well.
Maybe someone else on the forums have tried it and might be able to give you a little more advice on the matter.
All the best
Sorry for stealing your thread, but I thought this could be good lace to ask:
If I flash my rom to newer one, how can I keep my TomTom navigator program ? It originally came with the phone...Thanks.

Im Looking For The Fastest Latest Rom To Use On My XDA Exec (Preferably Not A Network Branded One)
Also I Currently Have The Helmi AKU3.5 1.3.1 Rom On My XDA And Whenever I Restore My Backup Made With SPB Backup To My Device Everything Works Apart From My Contacts.
Everytime I Try To Access My Contacts The Window Just Pops Up And Then Dissapears. The Contacts Window Works Before I Restore But Not After.
The Same Thing Happens When I Restore My Contacts With PimBackup.
Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.
Thanks In Advance

Ok Ive Solved My Contacts Problem.
PimBackup Works Fine. The Problem Was With Restoring My Old Pim.Vol File With My Old Pim.Vol Contacts Dont Work And Pim Backup Says It Cannot Access Contacts Through Outlook.
I Just Removed The Pim.Vol after Restoring My Backup Soft Reset My Device And A Clean Pim.Vol Was Created By The System, I Then Ran PimBackup And Restored And It All Works.
Lets Just Hope I Dont Have Any Other Bugs Lurking Around.
Question About Fastest Rom Still Stands, Is Helmi AKU 3.5 1.3.1 The Latest Fastest Most Compatible Rom ?

Hehe, I was thinking that...
And welcome to the forums Ollie, you may want to try out a WM6 ROM, sample the new features available (you can always return to a WM5 ROM afterward, Helmi 3.5 is probably one of the best. Although there are Vanilla (bloat removed) ROMs that may be faster).
If You Type In All Capitols It's Formatted Like This Automatically,
So It Actually Should Take Less Time Then Typing Normally.
Typing In "Propper Case" Is An Old Habbit Im Tryin To Kick.
Doesnt Take Me Any More Time To Type Like This Than In Lower Case.
My Pinky Heads For The Shift Key On Autopilot Lol
I Heard The WM6 Roms Are Full Of Bugs ?
Im Also Lookin For The Most Stable Rom,
I Know PDA's Are Prone To Crashes Anyways But Id Like To Keep Them To Their Absolute Minimum.

I use the new PDAVIET ROM, no crashes whatsoever. The main reason to avoid WM6 is the lack of videocall, but does anyone actually use that?

Let me have the pleasure of being the first to thank you and to request that you include the voip you previously posted. It works great.
I also think that adding the utility Shaun33 created in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=303493&highlight=sipgate
is a nice idea to include. There is no other way to configure the SIP settings other than creating an XML file, making it a cab and installing it. So this should complete everything needed to be able to use voip on WM6.
May I also suggest that we keep it simple as well, I mean not to overcrowd this little bugger with so many things after all.
Many thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing this ROM being cooked, I'm actually getting a little hungry
Cheers.

Hey Tom,
I think many of us would appreciate bug fixes before app additions.
I got this installed on my XDA Orbit today and works nicley but a few bugs. Such as When i turn wi-fi on, it comes on, but wont load any webpages, and acts like theres no connection, but its fully connected to my wifi at home.
Also the message alert pop up doesnt match the cool sleek design, its the old white and blue colors and looks horrible.
Maybe you should have a proper bugs thread and get these cleaned up before adding apps?
Thanks!
Had this idea to enhance the sleekness of the interface, not sure if you can incorporate this:How about changing the background in settings - programs to touch black and with white fonts?:. Or even if its possible assign the background image?... This would be all new
Tom, very cool I'm sure no matter how you cook this it'll taste good at the end
Cheers.
Hi Tom,
I've been following this thread since the beginning, the only thing that I miss is my native language support. I have a German HTC P3300 and would be happy to use it in that language, I don't even mind if the other addons are in English.
Apart from that, my critical apps are Wisbar Advance, SPB Mobile Shell and SPB Diary. But since those are all commercial apps it wouldn't be wise to include them.
How about a tutorial how to add custom apps or creating the ROM?

One thing I hate is always to reinstall all the apps I want on a new Rom.
Is it possible to make 1 cabfile for all the apps I want and put it in fe an extended rom? So after putting a new rom on my device it will install all the apps I wanted automatically? But I think if this works, the next problem will that I still need to register all the apps manually, or is there way to do this automatically too?
Cheers
Tom, thanks for all your good work sofar, great job.
When you ask 100 people which program's they like to include in the ROM, you probably will get also 100 different replies. So I second the idea of assembling a barebone ROM (so without one single extra program but hopefully with as less bugs as possible), and a tutorial so that everybody can cook their own unique personal ROM.
I would love a Reg Editor
international
Very good Tom !!
Like I said in the different thread I am ready to translate in french as you which ...
yep, like someone suggested above..make a barebone rom and at all the new faitures with extra cab files. I installed the first rom..then installed all my applications..then installed the second rom..yet again installed all my application etc.
so with every new rom, i can start all over again.
Just make a bare rom with just the essentials and let everybody make a wishlist
and let them choose the cabfiles they like to install.
looks more professional then
btw..great rom ..maybe now i keep my artemis instead of my daily hunt for the exclusiv benq p51 with sdcart, a full keyboard and 320*240 res.
Tom, in your new build can you remove the values from the 1 and 2 keys in HKLM/Comm/RTC/AdapterTypes leaving the keys in place that is please? This seems to have cleared out some issues in regards to voip as Sleuth255 has stated especially if they haven't been set in the first place.
Thanks.

Hi Tom, First of all Thank You for giving us Great ROMs.
-Some people like the V3 will be loaded with all the goodies.
-Some people don't, i hope you will be release the Vanilla version (No body Fat version). if you not going to release the Vanilla version, how do i uninstall the extra software.
I'm M700 user. in V2 I have an issue with appointment schedule.. its keep repeating itself. after i check over and over again.. its nothing to do with the reminder setup. probably a minor bug.
Other than that your ROM is completely THE BEST! M700 work flawlessly!
Thanks for evrything.
Hi TOM! Cobalt78 is right, why can't we translate it in french too. I got some files but I don't really know how to do it. If somebody can help me. I got some french files like PPC_FRA_GSM_VGA_VR.BIN but I don't know which one to use for translation.
Hi all,
I have added many programs and settings and such to my Artemis.
It happened a few times to me that I needed to Hard reset after a faulty installation or such...
I would like to know if there is a possibility now that I ahve all programs I need and configuration... to somehow create my own ROM out of my current configuration so that in case of future trouble I can just reload ROM instead of flashing with ROM and reinstalling everything over (about a 2 hours job if I remember everything )
Please let me know...
Thanks
Use the Software "Sprite Backup".
It doesn't give you a complete ROM, but a Backup.exe with ALL your Settings & Programs.
So you just have to:
- flash ROM again
- click the Backup.exe
After that, the Device will be exactly configured like it was, when u created the .exe

you said in your prev quote; that it backs up settings & programs. everytime i reflash say from vanilla to touch, i have to reinstall my programs. with this program, it sounds like that isnt the case?
I was wondering....!
If i backup with Sprite using a ROM and then flash an other ROM,not the same as before will it fully restore my programs?
YOUR ROM HAS TO STAY THE SAME!
cause every ROM has different settings n' stuff.
really, I also want to know how...
actually, is there any tools like a Symantec Ghost which is popular in desktop computer, which can make a image for the whole driver C, so that when I need restore my driver c, just use this image.
any tools have this function?
Sprite backup gives you the option to restore after a rom upgrade, it also allows you to restore to a new device. I have personally used it to restore after changing from Tom's B&B to Meschele vanilla 4.01 and it seemed to work pretty well except for a lost media player skin and maybe a speed issue. Try it for yourselves. I will be doing it the long way around when Tom's latest rom is out of it's beta stage. For a quick backup I found SPB easier to use, resco is also well recommended but I have not tried it myself.
Export+import Wireless Networks configuration
Hi,
I have set up several Wireless Networks Access points (with passwords) and I do not have the passwords written somewhere anymore.
Does anyone know how to export Wireless Networks configuration before hard reset and then import these exported Wireless Networks configuration back to my device after the hard reset ?
The solution for me
For me, SPB Clone is perfect.
If you stay with the same ROM (required for proper results) , SPB Clone is the perfect piece of software!
Read all about it overhere
I have used it a couple of times for restoring. It works deliciously
Important: Flash your phone back to the OS-version which you had during making the Cloning-Image
(I am sure there is a Trial for you to use. I don't know the limitations of the trial, I have used the full version of a friend of mine)

You're right. It'll cost about €300....... Thats why I am happy to have a friend with this software
I went there because other pieces of software didn't work on my Artemis.
SPB Backup for example won't start up at all. I'am still looking for a good freeware program or one for little money who does it all.
So if anyone has suggestions ? Please let me know by replying on this Thread
(I don't want to use my friends software over and over....)
How the f*** do they come up with $300? I think it's intended for corporations to clone hardware, we none of us recomend warez, but in that case who is ripping off who?
Totally agree

It's usefull for corporations who have a lot of the same (PDA- / MDA-)devices and like to have the same config on every device (IT, Surveying groups, Government, etc)
Same as other pieces of software (like MS Of**ce, Au**CAD), there is a business need, so they raise the pricetag.
They make it impossible for us normal consumers to profit from their great software . It is a neverending story.....
So, I and we are still looking for a good alternative. Who has a good suggestion, without getting ripped off?
Please pardon my ignorance. I have tried to work out what is going on here for the last couple of months, hoping that it would finally just click. could someone please explain to me what all these ROM's are. So I have an HTC touch diamond with the standard ROM (from the last update, i think 1.9xxxxxx cant remember). With all these 'ROM' developments what more do you get out of the phone. Do you guys still use the TouchFlo 3D? What is HARD-spl? Is it worth changing the ROM? There seems to be a lot of ROM's, how do i know which is the best 1 to use? I feel like i have so many more questions, but please could someone just outline what it is all about.
please excuse my ignorance. I have tried looking it up but i still dont understand so pardon me for taking shortcuts.
Thanks

i don't see how pointing him ti the wiki will answer any of his questions. that thing is as old as the diamond itself.
ROMs are the data image on your phone. the read only memory that includes sys, xip, wm6.1 and tf3d plus all the component packages in a ppc. all the ones floating around here are tweaked and updated by people to work the way they want them to, with suggestions by the testers.
they are all basically the same.
they are based on official htc releases and updated to the latest operating bits from other devices, then shared with us.
its up to you to find what works best on your device in your locale and for your specific needs. you don't have to read entire threads, just the last few pages or from the date that the latest one was released by that cook.
hard spl is a phone condom to keep people from bricking their phone. it is required and very important. i suggest developers edition so you can flash any rom you want.
and yes, flashing a cooked rom is very worth it, but i warn you, once you start you can't stop.
i can't tell you which is the best, i do know what are my favorites, but the journey you will take finding that perfect rom is very rewarding.

pretty much all apps for ppc can be found in .cab form. this is for easy installation and removal. if you choose a full rom you will get all stock htc apps, but a lite rom is bare bones. keep your collection of cabs on your internal storage for quick re-installation after flashing. also keep a backup of your cabs on your pc.
glad this helps

ya i can relate to that. Im also quite a forum junkie and I cant stand it when people direct me to search engines. Even on my local PS3 forum people always help out. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.
So if I want to flash a ROM on my phone I just have to sift through the 1's here that are available. Do you guys recommend any? ie. one's that have few problems.
Typically the rom you get with the phone is a generic one, not too fast, full of feature and there to please everybody.
A cooked rom normally strips things down or tunes the device to a specific need. some roms remove as much as they can to give you more ram. Great for those of us who browse the web.
Others load them with more features so you never want for anything.
Others are generic but more upto date. The problem with official roms is they are updated and then go into testing for months and months then get released.
a custom rom will take updated drivers from other devices (like the HD) and place them into our roms with around a weeks testing or less. so we get them sooner. This does have its drawbacks.
A custom rom can be less stable than an official one. but you can get lucky. Duttys 3.6b is a good mix. Its faster than the stock rom, has more features but more memory as the rubbish is removed.
In the past 2 days I have learnt how to cook my own rom, which is the dream situation. I get rid of everything I dont want like Cyberon, transcriber, ringtones and other stuff. SO I have loads of storage free but also add in the software I use the most.
I now have the fastest rom I have ever used and its perfect beacause its tailor made by me, for me. Its really not that hard.

Hello,
i have a Problem. I have a Diamond with about 5000 Contacts.
Problem is, that with the standardrom, the diamond is very slow.
So i tryed some other roms and got no better rom. Most times, the Diamond freezes when you try to open the contacts.
Maybe someone has a good suggestion for a "High Performance" rom for me.
Thank you very much.
They are all the same!
ready to get flamed at
hm... maybe there is an tweak to make the contacts database smaller?
Try an external contacts management app, like PocketCM, iContact, YotaContacts...
try a 6.5 rom... maybe the outlook contact handling is better...
it'll OS limitation than anything else...
another suggestion, maybe delete all info/user pictures/store only 1 number...
but 5000 contacts?... damn

Hello,
i have a Problem.

5000??!!! woahhhh. i bet u havent even met half of the 5000.
your diamond didnt freeze. it's using all possible resources just to open your contacts. open your contacts and leave it to search. lets say an hour or so? make it 2.
Thanks for all this answers. I will try this external tool and a 6.5 rom.
The owner of this device is a Marketing/Salesman so he needs those lots of contacts :/
With 5k contacts, I guess you're running out of RAM / balloon.
just write a program that calls thaousands of contacts.. it's spamming anyway, so, why do it in person
When you've got contacts open... do you have some free mem left? If so, it's a speed issue. Most roms with 6 mb pagepool will be too slow for you. Raise the pagepool to get some speed!
use a databse software like accessmanager for ppc.
generate intelligent mask/filters. not needed load first all contacts if you only need the phonenumber of madonna or don king or ....
if needed example and have a little time to wait (a lot of time
than ask for it.
no garanty but possible

Ok, I've tried about "at least" 90% of all the ROMs for Diamond. I'll tell you without any shred of doubt, the fastest & most stable ROM with tweaks no one other than Microsoft even heard of is Dia Duit 1.3. Lots f space too - with EVERYTHING (xbmod manila, games, apps, etc) I want installed in the system RAM, I have about 60MBs left! When you boot up the first time it'll ask you a good bunch of questions include a "system performance profile"make sure you choose either tweaked (fastest) or balanced (medium). You will never use another ROM!
Regards,
A happy diamond user (!!!!)
Hello,
thank you for all your Answers. So i have now many things to try
udk r6 may suite you, by the way best is using icontact for your contact browsing.
cooking(compiling) roms really isnt too challenging of a task and then you could customize exactly what apps you want on the phone which could help with system performance.
also, advanced config will add performance if you expand you file system cache.
