How to backup all in case hard reset - P3300, MDA Compact III ROM Development

Hi all,
I have added many programs and settings and such to my Artemis.
It happened a few times to me that I needed to Hard reset after a faulty installation or such...
I would like to know if there is a possibility now that I ahve all programs I need and configuration... to somehow create my own ROM out of my current configuration so that in case of future trouble I can just reload ROM instead of flashing with ROM and reinstalling everything over (about a 2 hours job if I remember everything )
Please let me know...
Thanks

Use the Software "Sprite Backup".
It doesn't give you a complete ROM, but a Backup.exe with ALL your Settings & Programs.
So you just have to:
- flash ROM again
- click the Backup.exe
After that, the Device will be exactly configured like it was, when u created the .exe

It worked fine...
I havent tested the restore yet of course as I dont have so much time to spend on this yet but seems like a good tool.

you said in your prev quote; that it backs up settings & programs. everytime i reflash say from vanilla to touch, i have to reinstall my programs. with this program, it sounds like that isnt the case?

I was wondering....!
If i backup with Sprite using a ROM and then flash an other ROM,not the same as before will it fully restore my programs?

YOUR ROM HAS TO STAY THE SAME!
cause every ROM has different settings n' stuff.

really, I also want to know how...
actually, is there any tools like a Symantec Ghost which is popular in desktop computer, which can make a image for the whole driver C, so that when I need restore my driver c, just use this image.
any tools have this function?

Sprite backup gives you the option to restore after a rom upgrade, it also allows you to restore to a new device. I have personally used it to restore after changing from Tom's B&B to Meschele vanilla 4.01 and it seemed to work pretty well except for a lost media player skin and maybe a speed issue. Try it for yourselves. I will be doing it the long way around when Tom's latest rom is out of it's beta stage. For a quick backup I found SPB easier to use, resco is also well recommended but I have not tried it myself.

Export+import Wireless Networks configuration
Hi,
I have set up several Wireless Networks Access points (with passwords) and I do not have the passwords written somewhere anymore.
Does anyone know how to export Wireless Networks configuration before hard reset and then import these exported Wireless Networks configuration back to my device after the hard reset ?

The solution for me
For me, SPB Clone is perfect.
If you stay with the same ROM (required for proper results) , SPB Clone is the perfect piece of software!
Read all about it overhere
I have used it a couple of times for restoring. It works deliciously
Important: Flash your phone back to the OS-version which you had during making the Cloning-Image
(I am sure there is a Trial for you to use. I don't know the limitations of the trial, I have used the full version of a friend of mine)

You're right. It'll cost about €300....... Thats why I am happy to have a friend with this software
I went there because other pieces of software didn't work on my Artemis.
SPB Backup for example won't start up at all. I'am still looking for a good freeware program or one for little money who does it all.
So if anyone has suggestions ? Please let me know by replying on this Thread
(I don't want to use my friends software over and over....)

How the f*** do they come up with $300? I think it's intended for corporations to clone hardware, we none of us recomend warez, but in that case who is ripping off who?

Totally agree

It's usefull for corporations who have a lot of the same (PDA- / MDA-)devices and like to have the same config on every device (IT, Surveying groups, Government, etc)
Same as other pieces of software (like MS Of**ce, Au**CAD), there is a business need, so they raise the pricetag.
They make it impossible for us normal consumers to profit from their great software . It is a neverending story.....
So, I and we are still looking for a good alternative. Who has a good suggestion, without getting ripped off?

Which ROM?

Which WM22005 ROM should I invest my time in to use on my device before I get too far with various software installs. I would prefer themes working and less hassles with Bluetooth/WLAN connections.
Although the two that I know of must be very good, there must be one that out performs the other.
(Yes I'm a PPC newB).

U should opt for xPlode's Lazy release. It is feature rich and works great! U can install Resco Explorer to send files via bluetooth. WLAN/BT can disturb u a lil when used together but U'll be happy with this rom .
And that radio in your signature is pretty cool. Good job
Question too
Hi Using mobile 2003 at the moment on XDA iis. So which rom is better? i read through the wiki and there are two choices of upgrading to WM5 (Baniaczek and Xplode) am i correct? I cant find any details regarding the difference between the two Roms.

Thanks for the reply. I have switched to the Lazy release and is working out fine. It still won't implement the background of a theme, unless I'm doing something wrong.
Also thanks about the radio, as I put a lot of work into the site itself. Just added new video from this weekend when I went to the Guvernment Nightclub. (Sorry for getting off topic ppl.)

Ideas for B&B version 4.2

I know that 4.1 is only just out & I think it's brilliant. I'm spending every evening checking new posts and playing with my phone like never before. So, before the 4.1 thread becomes the next thread with 1200 posts, I thought I'd start a new thread for ideas for 4.2
Tom - before I found the magic that is B&B I was using Wisbar Advance desktop and an application called innesoft address book which had a great feature that when someone called you, their photo was displayed full screen with their name (see thumbnails) rather than just the standard windows window.
Any chance you could devlelop something similar for 4.2 !!!
Cheers

Here is something that may hold you over, I am still trying to figure out how to use the caller id without the actual slide to unlock, bit here is something to tide you over, jsut a thought
Have a pretty much full screen keyboard for texting in landscape mode? The text appears at the top?
Is there a way we can assign a button to lock the phone rather than go thruogh the menu?
Cheers
Anybody knows if it is legal to include trial versions of apps in cooked rom?
Was thinking rom with included sktools, english dictionary of some kind, IM+, resco explorer, spb gprs monitor included on rom would save time and space. Apps included would be trial versions and ppl haveing bought them could just enter activation keys/serials, others could buy app if thy liked it.

This would be a waste of time and energy for most, these Roms are made to be efficient, the least amount of space used so that you as an individual can place your desired programs, once a rom is built there is no removing/uninstalling of any apps, hence the reason to not put trial versions into a rom, I use several of the above mentioned, but to "Bloat" a rom with them would be ineffecient. Best thing to do is install on your sd card, keep all your initial install cabs in one folder and use that as your rebuild folder. Cheers.

Is it not worth remembering that everyone has a different list of killer apps they MUST have on their device?
If Tom & Meschle etc added every app - the rom would only just fit on a 40gb hard disk!!!
To my mind - the idea is that the cooked roms are a basis onto which you install your own apps to make your own device work?
Constanlty asking for new apps to be added to a rom just complicates the issue. Or am I wrong?
something so i can remotly use my desktop via PPC
then im complete
automated network setup like in the O2 WM6 Premium 1.0 WWE rom
Extended timers & alarms application
I'd like to avoid installing SpbTime on each version
Great job!
OK, i agree, rom should be as slim as possible, but why the hell there is cube, psshutXP, PHM regedit/traylaunch, and office mobile on it then?
Could make an ultra lite wersion. (=
P.S. Dont get me wrong, i think 4.1 is great and it is a lot faster than O2. Just throwing around ideas about how to make it better.
with my original post, I was not really asking for a copy of the app, just would like a much bigger photo to pop up with caller id and liked the look of the inesoft one.
Tom - what do you think?
Just trying to make the ROM easier to use, more efficient.
B&B 4.1 is far better than original ROM from this point of view
TouchFlo for example helps to have everything we need with a single finger move..
Phone app is a lot more usable also.
Perhaps also the possibility to customize HTC Home by default, with more options (number of apps in the launcher, ..)
i don't think that is constructive to add as much apps, i can imagine, when it's released, everbody is shouting "this is not good" and "why did you use this app and not the other one"...and so one. I like it clear, not too much apps...but that's my opinion.
If i want it with all apps included then i start (to learn ) cooking my own ROM... IMHO i am very satisfied with the work that Tom is doing for us all. And 4.1 is just released. Enjoy it and let Tom make a break. He is hard working all the time!
Plugins for new version
Alarms extension (SpbTime style)
USB PenDrive emulator (WMstorage style)
Phone call recording (Audio Recorder style)
Thanks for B&B! Great job!
i have a great idea
Why dont we support Tom and all off his hard work and all the other wizards here, and stop complaining or asking for more.
like a bunch of kids in a sweet shop.
Improving File access
What I would like to see is the File Dialog Changer, I don't know who has heard of it but it is very good! Usually when you want to save files or open them in any application you get access to you My Documents folder. Only some smart apps like TCPMP and others have the option to access your entire pda.
File Dialog Changer changes the way you access your files in opening and saving them for every application, it's just 50 KB and you can activate / deactivate it in System Settings.

And about your wish I can only say that there is already Remote Desktop for WM6, I think I've downloaded it in the Wizard forum. Or use PocketVNC, that is the pda version for VNC. I am successfully using that with TightVNC on my computer. I just have to be in range of my WLAN and can turn on my computer by sending a wake on lan signal (not with vnc) and then access my computer through pocketvnc or access the files on my computer.

I think he had a point though. In the whole thread there is not one message of Tom Codon himself. Did you ask what he thinks? Maybe he has a few ideas of his own? After all, it will be his ROM...
Who says it will be B&B v4.2? Why not 4.3 or 5.0? If there will be another version let him take care of the numbers.

upgrade to WM6.1&touchflo, how???

Dear xda-developers forum,
I just bought an HTC artemis, very nice phone, and was searching for apps for it, most of links in the search engines returned to here ( xda-developers ), so I thought..this must be the best website on the net specialized in PPC, so I registered..and this is my first post
To be honest i always were a symbian fan, but i wanted to break the rule this time, I'm new in windows mobile world..please help me!
I just have one question: Can anyone tell me how to install the latest version of WM6 (I currently have some WM5 version), and then show me how to turn it into a nice touchflo device (what's this cooking all about)???
Thank youuuuuuu!
Have a bit more of a read round the forums and then carefully follow the instructions for installing a new ROM.
I've got 6.1 with touch working though I have to say that the touch stuff is very limited.
Once you've worked through it, it is easy enough as long as you follow each step carefully.

Did you buy a new phone or a used one? Just wondering since new phones come with WM6 & not WM5, I got a new one 4 months back.
And like knightnet said, have a look around thr forums, check out the wiki & you will see guides on installing a custom ROM. You can try it out but personally I'm not a fan of TouchFlo on the Artemis - it ain't got the processor or memory for that, TouchFlo is heavy. You can also find the new TouchFlo versions around in the forum, the kinds which come with Diamond & later phones with those smooth sliding. That TouchFlo is pretty slick & I like it a lot & had it on my Artemis for a week but then removed it as the phone has become too slow to bear it.

it has OS 5.1.342, build 15096.3.0.0 (whatever that means!!)

so i want to know if i can backup the original rom before doing an upgrade, or is there a place to download them??
I have :
ROM version 1.12.415.1 WWE
Radio version 2.67.90 (which is old compared to the ones available here)

There are some standard ROMs available I think, I remember seeing some when I was looking to change mine (it's been a while I'm afraid so I'm a bit hazy). But you can and should back-up your own.
It isn't easy being a "noob" in phone upgrading - I remember what it was like & I wasn't being nasty to you (honest!) but the instructions on the wiki are clear after you have followed them carefully. If you've backed up your existing ROM and taken out any additional memory cards (oh, and charged up the phone before starting - just in case), there is really no danger of "bricking" your phone.
Don't forget to back up any information on the phone as well. I use the excellent PIM Backup for that as I can shedule it to do a daily backup of all of the PIM (Calendar, contacts, tasks, notes) data and any other data I want (I back up the internal memory "My Documents" folder) to the memory card in the phone and then regularly copy that to my PC (and from their back up to a server on a different continent - though I am a bit paranoid about my data!).
So go for it

I expect that there is since all FLASH memory has a limit.
However, you won't be hitting it any time soon even if you were to FLASH a couple of times a day!

Best mods whats recommended????

Hi everyone

Best rom ...
Now thats a difficult one as its personal preference. i would say shadys rom is the best performer. dheetwares looks the best with manilla 2d interface but emrulez is most untouched true to ms version about. be sure to make sure you read up about flashing your rom first. after a while you will will find one you are happy with. ps if you want a finger friendly keyboard look for qvga ezinput. hope that helps.

If I am totally honest it has been a long time since I have run any 6.1 rom. In fact the day I got it I flashed it from its default rom so it would support sdhc.
Since going over to 6.5 I would not change back, it is so much easier and nicer to use. As for performance, the rom by Shady seems smooth and works very well, plenty of free memory. Shady, Emrulez, Dheetware etc are all legends and have done a fantastic job delivering these roms and are constantly delivering new roms based on the latest code. They all seem pretty stable and as far as I am aware all are fully functional (wifi, gps, camera, bluetooth etc).
Best thing to do is try it yourself!
Also with regards to backing up. I personally use PimPPCBackup (you will need to find and download the cab) just syncing with Outlook keeps your contacts but loses text messages, other people might be able to offer a better way of doing it.
Hope that helps
Hi a_lai82
Thank you for your reply. And looks like I will be updating very soon...
As to the backup question... What I meant is can a restore a full internal back up or will I have to reinstall everything??? I use Sprite backup to periodically backup the internal storage so am hoping it will be a simply process of just doing a restore after upgrading to a newer rom. If not it will be a pain as have 254 apps installed!!!!!!!
regards
Lohtse
with pim backup you can specify to backup files as well but i dont think it does app. i have heard you can set it up so that when you reinsert sd card after flashing it will auto install cabs but i havent tried that myself. btw camera software seems a bit better. sorry about lack of paragraphs and punctuation as i am on my phone!

I don't know of any way to retain all your programmes. Some apps on your sd card will just run if you add a shortcut in the start menu however anything that is installed on the phone memory, or that requires registry entries will need to be reinstalled.
Unless someone out there knows differently.
That also puts me off flashing my rom, however when trialing Android on my phone it wiped my SD card so I lost all my apps! Since then I only every reinstall about half a dozen apps.
In short if you have your phone running well you can generally add apps to make it do most the stuff in 6.5 such as touch flo. SPB mobile shell 3.5 (paid app / 15 day free trial) is an excellent app works on the original rom and allows for easy use and a bit of an android style home page. Coupled with ezinput you will hardly every use your stylus which was the goal for me.
Hope that helps.

Well I have never used Sprite Backup, but there website implies that it will backup all your applications as well.
Maybe someone else on the forums have tried it and might be able to give you a little more advice on the matter.

Sorry for stealing your thread, but I thought this could be good lace to ask:
If I flash my rom to newer one, how can I keep my TomTom navigator program ? It originally came with the phone...Thanks.

Just got my HTC Tilt 2 and need some help!

Okay so for Christmas I got the HTC Tilt 2 with WM6.5 on the AT&T network. Its a great phone but I want to make it better. Through some google searches and what not I found this site and knew i had to join anyway....
Okay so one think I am desperately looking for is a flash player, mainly so I can watch youtube videos. I tried Adobe Flash Lite but it didnt work and the youtube mobile app didn't work either. So anyway know of any good flash player?
Another thing is this is my first smart phone my last phone (some samsung thing) could barely call and text people so im still learning the ropes with this thing and have therefore never edited anything on my phone. So a basic description of like what exactly a ROM is and Flashing a ROM. Also is a skin for TF3D just a skin or is it like I guess what you call a ROM? Then the Radio I am almost sure when it says "Flash a Radio" its not talking about the FM AM kind is it?
Also I have seen some pretty sweet skins but I dont plan on changing my skin every week so I am looking for just an amazing skin! So if you know any sleek, modern, colorful, simplistic, clean skins a quick link would be great!
Bah! While I am asking all these questions can someone please explain why the HTC Tilt 2 (or any HTC phone for that matter) fall under the "Rhodium" category and what relation does it have to the phone.
Again just trying to familiarize myself with what I am doing before i do this so called "Flashing".
Also any basic info that may help a person like me.
Again thanks in advanced for the help looking forward to being more part of this community!
Congrats on getting the device. You'll either love it or hate it...
Re: Flash player
The new Pocket IE browser supports built in flash. I recall there's another browser that does as well, but I can't remember. Skyfire? Someone else should be able to come up with the name...
Re: definition of ROM and Radio
Suggest you to read about them in the wiki. ROM is your device's firmware. Radio is the software that controls your cellular reception and GPS.
Skin for TF3D does not equal ROM. Essentially it's a theme. Before installing themes, make sure the theme is made for your version of manila. But if it's a cab file, you can simply uninstall to reverse any changes.
Re: the name of your device
The Tilt2 is the same as HTC Touch Pro2. Rhodium is HTC's code name for this family of devices. The "Tilt" name is just AT&T's branding.

So, I got this phone back in September. This was also my first smartphone. I read and read through all the tutorials here on ROMs, radios, flashing, and registry tweaks. The answers to the majority of your questions are in the FAQs/XDA-Wiki.
HTC YouTube App: I think there's a fix available here on XDA. I think itt has something to do with editting the connection settings. You might want to search for that using the search function of the forum.
ROM (flashing): think of it as like upgrading your PC from XP to Vista or Vista to 7.
TF3D (aka Manila or Sense): a UI (user interface) it's sort of a skin on top of Windows Mobile. Since WM is old and appearance hasn't improved that much, HTC implemented this UI to cover up some flaws of WM.
Radio-ROM: No, that's not the FM Radio. It's a software thing that handles the phone capabilities of the phone (the Tilt2 is a PDA/phone).
(Changing) Themes: There's a lot of themes out there to suit our personalities! Go look! Besides, when you get addicted to flashing, you'll get used to changing things and setting things up over and over again!
Rhodium: (I just completed a Chemistry course; I never knew this was an element on the Periodic Table!) HTC code name of the Touch Pro2 and Tilt2.
Feel free to PM me if you need any help. Like I said, it's also my first smartphone, and I would have to say I learned a lot since I first got it (pretty recently). So I would know what you're experiencing right now.

Yes, Skyfire has full flash support and is very fast because everything goes through SkyfireLab servers. However, video playback quality will be horrible (especially YouTube!).
I just remembered, if you go to m.youtube.com in Opera Mobile Browser and you press on a video, the video will play in the HTC Video Player. So, it's not really playing in the browser; it's like you're downloading the video into your Tilt2.
Ah ok cool. Yea I have skyfire I forgot it did flash but the resolution is a bit fuzzy. Pretty sure I will love it just as soon as I figure out what in the world im doing! Since I love customizing and tweaking things which is the main reason I didnt go with an iPhone that and the full QWERTY keyboard.
I guess I shall read the wiki/faq
Welcome to forums
You had a great gift for Xmas!!
I assume you still have the stock ROM, which I personally think it´s crap...
I would recommend to install a cooked ROM from this great site!
Onalmost any cooked ROM you have the youtube app so you can see videos
Have a deep read on the Rhodium Wiki so you start to familiarize with all that you can do
Good luck and don´t forget to vote!
Yea love the phone but yes I still have the Stock ROM (hey I know what I am talking about now!) yes it is crap. Not liking the fact that it constantly stays at 74% RAM.
Oh you just reminded me abotu another question of mine.
How do I get rid of all the freakin trail ware that came pre-loaded on this phone! I think I read in multiple places most good ROMS should get rid of that.

LOL I think every ROM here gets rid of that crapware!
Ok good because it keeps me up at night just knowing that its on my phone >
Ok cool just read the Wiki found a list of ROMs that look great > just 2 possible more questions
1) Ok so it says I should back up my phone completely before flashing which makes sense. But to where? I have my conacts and stuff on Microsoft MyPhone but Im pretty sure my apps and everything else isnt on there. Do i Just copy all the phones files and paste them somewhere on my computer?
2) Just incase something goes horribly wrong is there a Hard Reset on the phone that No matter what the phone will go back to factory reset. Even after flashing?
There is a YouTube app included on the Tilt 2. It is hidden from the Start Menu by default. If you open File Manager and browse to the Windows directory, you will find YouTube there. Once you launch it for the first time, it should also be referenced in the Start Menu, or at least in the "All Programs" list option in the TF3D Programs tab. If not, you can easily COPY the youtube.lnk file from the Windows directory to Windows\Start Meny\Programs and it will show up.
The app is clean and tight, and supports the native controls of the phone (eg, the volume rocker controls volume).
I cant seem to find it I browsed the programs list and there was no YouTube Program unless its called something else.
Anyway as posted abotu still have 2 questions:

1. If you have the .cabs of your apps, save them onto your PC (I have a designated folder for all my cabs, worth over 400MB!). After you flash, you're going to have to re-install them (automatically or manually, depending on if you use Sashimi, Sprite, Seven, or UC_setup [UC is only possible if it is supported by the ROM]).
2. If you flashed, your stock ROM has been overwritten, so if you hard reset, it will flash to the factory defaults that is in the flashed ROM. To go back to stock, you will need to flash back to the stock ROM, which you should find in the link posted in the above post.
Oh ok thanks for all the answers appriciate it I think I might do it this weekend if i get the time.
First off, welcome.
Next before you do ANYTHING read then re-read any and all wiki's and tutorials on the Rhodium. Learn your device inside and out FIRST before attempting to make tweaks or rom changes. If you don't read then re-read, your Christmas present can become a pretty paperweight -aka- bricking your device.
pIE and Skyfire both have Flash capabilities.
The Rhodium IS cpabale of being used as a radio, but you need to install the right cab file...again read.
That being said, a radio usually refers to the part of the phone that receives a signal so you can use it as a phone. Don't mess with THAT radio until you have read and re-read the wiki's and tutorials.
Flashing a rom means to change your operating system to a "cooked" one...one made using a windows mobile base, but specially tweaked by someone here at xda. These cooked roms cannot be flashed without first unlocking your phone. Again READ or you can brick it. Also know that flashing a cooked rom has the potential to void any warranty you have...so back up your stock rom before attempting a rom flash. It is also good to have this back up in the event that you don't like a cooked rom you have installed.
There is a great thread that lists cab files to some really good applications, which will customize your device even more. You can also create your own ringtones, and tweak the device. Again, before any major installations or registry tweaks I strongly urge you to learn all you can first, by reading the wiki's and tutorials.
I have been with xda since my wizard came out a few years ago, and I have seen far too many eager "noobs" brick their devices.
I have only had my rhodium for a month. I am still learning my device. I still have a stock rom because I am not yet comfortable with my knowledge of the Rhodium. The stock rom blows by comparison to the cooked roms, but until I am comfortable with my device, I am happy to remain stock until I learn all I need to.
Once you learn your device, you will need to join Flashers Anonymous...because like most of us here, our phones become really fun toys with pretty much unlimited possiblities...so again, welcome...and read, read, read.
