Any ETA on 1.6 for Hero users? - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Just curious, surely it cannot take this long for HTC to port everything over from 1.5 to 1.6.

Considering that the HTC Tattoo is running 1.6, SenseUI, and has already been released, it is ridiculous indeed.

agree...!!

Well, some have said it before and might be interesting. It could be (because of other devices etc) HTC is waiting for a Hero update until Eclair is there. And apparantly some devices with Eclair should come out in the next two months, so who knows...
Hope it's not going to be the same like the WM devices. And HTC wants us to buy a new device with Eclair on it...

Motorola Droid has 2.0 and is coming early November afaik and being officially announced Oct. 30

Yeah, but I always give them a few months to actually release the thing
But I am kinda hoping they will give us 2.0 and skip 1.6. Just because I wonder how long it will take before we get 2.0 once it's out

It'd be really great to have 2.0 before 2010 (even if I really DON'T think so...)

Yeah I requested via twitter that they skip 1.6 in favour of a 2.0 release on time. I don't who is in charge of their twitter, and I know it probably won't help but I like to think it got noticed
An update to 2.0 would be a ot more significant in my eyes.

The Droid event is actually October 28th...was just posted on Engadget

I'll believe it when I see it, given that the 2.0 SDK has not been rolled out yet! That's not to say it won't happen, just that I'm very sceptical!

What i dont understand is that HTC already has Hero's SENSE UI working on 1.6 ( Tattoo ) then whats taking em so God Damn long to push it out ...
One more thing ... Why should we skip 1.6 for 2.0 ? changes or no changes i would want each and every update ( be it miniscule ) to be sent to HTC's Flagship android device... besides all they have to do is put it on their website in the stupid RUU format... and a month or a week or two later roll out 2.0 in similar fashion ....
Now is that too much to ask ?

It's possible that the version of Sense UI on the Tattoo has only been coded for its QVGA screen, and that they need to port it "properly" to the Hero.

Dave

Will Desire be updated to Android 2.2?

I read a news from the following link
http://marmarday.com/?p=7239
It says N1 will be updated to Android 2.2 on the Horizon, and what about the Desire?
i think it will but there will be a slight delay as HTC need to update Sense to work with 2.2 whereas the N1 has no overlays so can be updated as soon as the update is released

I wouldn't count on that.
HTC Hero used to be the top of the line before the Legend and the Desire came out. I think the Hero was launched in September, but until now the latest """Rumors""" say it will be updated to 2.1 in June.
Not to mention, android 1.5 on the Hero has limitations, which naturally should become a reason for updating, but yet, that wasn't good enough.
So worrying about it is just a waste of callories
But when the Desire gets rooted, we'll have plently of cooked 2.2, 2.5... etc Roms
If 2.2 is when their "Defragmentation Solving" thing comes into effect then probably yes.
Because in theory, HTC wouldn't have to do anything, sense and all the apps would happily run on top of 2.2 as separate apps.
They had better... Flash 10.1, DivX and 720p recording depend on it.

Still, it will take HTC alot of work to migrate to 2.2 in the first place. After which defragmentation concept can be applied.
Anyway, the complexity of it will be clear when that feature is out.

Flash 10.1 is definitley in FroYo. DivX and 720P recording was something HTC promised to be released in an update after the desire was launched so to me it makes sense that FroYo would be the update.
Look at it this way...HTC supposedly take such a long time because they build Sense to integrate tightly with the underlying OS. It's hooked in. The direction Google is taking is going to mean Sense is a separate self standing app/service...so HTC now have to re-write it probably from the ground up. That's not a trivial task if that's what this means.

You're right, all these are promised to be coming to the Desire, and Flash 10.1 is rumored to be coming to Nexus 1 with Froyo.
But that doesn't mean all these features require the update to Froyo, at least I hope so, or the Desire will have to wait for a long time.

I can't wait to root mine. Good thing is that it won't affect the warranty unlike the Nexus One.
I REALLY hope that the seperated update stuff will be here sooner than later. I am actually quite surprised since I got the Hero that it's not in Android to start with.
And it's the only way Google can avoid fragmentation, which imho is one of the biggest threat to the platform so far.
Warranty issue also depends on where you live. They can put in as much warranty void thingies in as they want. But when my phone has a hardware issue and they don't want to fix because I changed something in the software they will be in trouble. And then they can try and prove my software change damaged the hardware.
I thought it was the other way around?

Also, don't forget that HTC has access to early builds and source of future versions because they are building terminals based on it. Porting Sense is probably being done right now, they don't have to wait like we do.

agreed, htc will take a LIFETIME to release this for sense
in fact from my experience what will happen is that before next month another 3 phones will be released and they will no longer support the desire
although i have heard of google fragmentation which if true could mean that adjustments do not need to be made for sense and android 2.2 could simply be installed to our desires?

23rd June FroYo release now far more likely

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...on-june-23rd-is-froyo-also-joining-the-party/
Google, Motorola, Verizon and Adobe are releasing the next generation of the droid on June 23rd with FroYo.
Couple this with the fact that a customer service rep said HTC are releasing FroYo on the 23rd of June it's seeming more and more likely that we will be seeing FroYo on the 23rd of June.

I don't follow your logic. This is the release of a new handset from Motorola, it's not a milestone in Froyo releases and certainly doesn't dictate (at least in the short term) what HTC will or will not do.

Plus I would rather have a full working phone with FroYo after waiting for HTC than a custom rom with bits working here and there and having to press F5 on the roms thread every minute of the day in hope that something else has been fixed. Don't get me wrong, I am used to it with the HD2 and eventually, custom roms can be pretty awesome, I just feel that time is not right now with the desire.. I'm holding out on HTC for now

Notice that Google and Adobe are announcing the next generation of the Moto Droid with FroYo.
Now what we can understand from this is that...
Motorola are releasing the successor to the Droid with FroYo
Adobe are releasing Flash 10.1 Final
Google are more than likely going to start proper OTA updates on the Nexus One
All of these are going to occur on the 23rd of June. Doesn't it seem a bit of an odd coincedence that a few weeks back we heard unconfirmed reports from HTC customer service that a FroYo release was to come on the 23rd of June?
It seems far too perfectly in sync to be a coincedence. Google are trying to stop device fragmentation right? Doesn't having its biggest hardware makers Motorola and HTC releasing FroYo on their devices along with Flash 10.1 being released on the same day sound like a start to defragmentation?
However, HTC is not mention once in the whole story, I would like to see it, but I think Honduras have a better chance of winning the world cup

There is some logic in this indeed.
It would be cool: a global Froyo launch over multiple devices. Better then slowly updating each device over a 6-12 month period.
The Android Army is marching in on the 23rd! One day before the iPhone 4 is released. Sounds typical Google.
I think there is straw clutching too.
HTC have nothing confirmed, for all we know the announcement by Motorolla is that the new Droid handsets will run Froyo and thats all. And a release date for handsets.

And has nothing in history ever changed? There is a first time for everything, including HTC bringing an update fast. If you are looking at the Hero: that was a totally different situation IMO. Froyo is much needed for the Desire while eclair for the Hero was not so big. Flash wants to be on as much possible devies as fast as possible. Google wants a big Froyo launch, which will have a much bigger impact than slow, unnoticed Froyo updates.
I am not sure of anything, bit I do think that the '23rd rumor' is possible. We will see.

Great news. Although I wonder what they mean by "beginning IN Q3" (as opposed to "beginning of Q3"). I'm assuming it means that just one of those phones will see Froyo at some point in Q3. In which case, let's hope the Desire is the first. It should need the least work over the N1 compared to the others (I guess). Still, Q3 stretches all the way out to September. But great news nevertheless. Lets just hope they can deliver.

I guess its either going to be the Evo4G or the Desire, because they are the flagship devices from HTC at the moment, legend and the other ones will be getting it later on.
HTC after Google IO (when froyo was officialy shown to the world):
'Blablabla all 2010 models get froyo. We are STARTING with the Desire and Incredible. Other models as the Evo 4G will get it after.'
Off course they could have changed their strategy. But I am expecting froyo before the Legend and Wildfire.
Great news anyway, starting from a few days we could get froyo. I am sooooooooo F'in tired of the 'low internal memory' notification. I cant even open my SMS messages sometimes for the love of god! I mean, come on. My SMS messages -.-

I think the competition has changed for HTC. Why would somebody pick up a 2.1 Desire when a 2.2 Motorola or Samsung device is right next to it? With the Hero they didn't have any big competition like now.
Btw, I have seen multiple people say that going from 2.1 to 2.2 is not so hard (compared from 1.5 to 2.1 with the Hero's hardware). Is this true?

bit of a bold statement.
seeing as the nexus 1 and nexus s cpu speed is the same spec i see no reason why HTC will not upgrade at some point the 3 desire phones as these are there flagships. by not upgrading the standard desire they risk losing people who must have '2.3' to another brand. My view is in early 2011 they will roll this update out to all 3 and also bring the standard desire up to the HD and Z in sense terms. i believe they held this off for marketing reasons. Juts my view mind.

My thoughts exactly, if not, someone will eventually port .
Yes.. My feeling is that the desire will get the new Sense along with Gingerbread release.
Well.. even if they dont release it officially for Desire, they will have to release it anyway for the Z/HD and our mods can port it in no time. Our Desires dont have the hardware limitation (especially internal storage with A2SD/D2SD). Then we desire users can flash those roms and show the finger to HTC...
We have the mods... they are our gods!!
Market reason?
With the 2 years warranty there must be not only assistance in case of broken phone, but also the confirmation of continous upgrading with new software, bugfix until the 2 years are passed and 'til the phone risk not to support th upgrading.
This should be the real 2 year warranty so much declared in the instructions and things like that
