GPS (power?) problem since 6.5 upgrade. - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hope someone on here can help. I use a topo map software called "Memory Map" when i go out walking, hiking. While my TP2 was running 6.1 the app worked fine. However, since i put 6.5 (Energy Rom) onto the phone, i've run into a problem.
As long as the screen is turned on, the gps is working and tracking just fine. But as soon as the screen is turned off, or goes to ''standby', the GPS also seems to go to sleep. I turn the screen back on, and after a couple of seconds, the GPS also kicks back in and starts tracking again.
99% certain its a 6.5 issue. Memory map has worked fine for the last 2 years on my old beater QTEK 9100, and was working on the TP2 when it was 6.1. By 'working', i mean i could fire up the app, put the phone in my pocket, whip it out 1/2 hour later and the map would show where i had walked and where i was now.
I don't have that now. If i pull the phone out and turn on the screen, the 'track' jumps from where i last had the screen on to where i am now. As i said, the GPS seems to have to gone to sleep with the screen.
Any ideas, settings i might need to look for?
Thanks.

tomtom Nav5 and high battery consumption with PDA Off

Upgraded from Nav3 to 5 which is working great except that the PDA will not power off automatically with Nav5 running. Also even if I manually switch the PDA off the battery consumption is very high (runs flat overnight). I'm not using bluetooth or WLAN and they are definately off. I don't have any other app's running.
Anyone else have this problem or suggest a workaround?
If I Stop the Nav5 application then power functions as normal but being forgettful it's hard to remember to do this every time!
Of course Tomtom support have been as useless as ever!!
It maybe dumb to suggest, but....
...do you 'Exit Application' when you've finished using TTN5?
If you don't, it will keep polling the Serial Port for your GPS reciever, and thus the handset won't fully 'stand-by' as serial activity will drain power.
I use TTN5, and as long as I exit, I have still got around 2 days out of a battery, with 'careful' usage.
No offence intended at all in this post - just perhaps highlighting the obvious!
R.
You are correct that exiting (ie Stopping) the application resolves the battery drain but I was using TTN3 previously with a serial receiver and that happily shut down when the PDA was off and did not need stopping.
Also with TTN5 running it stops the PDA switching off automatically, I have to switch off with the power switch.
I have an XDA II and M2000. i have the battery drain problem on both. i exit the app like i am supposed to, but when i start the device in the morning it has completely run flat! in the task manager there is nothing running when i put the device in standby...
any further thoughts?
i am using tomtom v5.21 and the latest roms.
Maybe do a scriptlike "shotdown all" before it goes into it's nightsleep
But i don't see a problem in shutting down TTN5 if you don't use it...
I don't even see a problem in switching off the Radio if i'm not listening etc. No pun intended, but if a programm keeps running it's pretty likely it drains the battery. You're just lucky if it doen't...

Solution for increased battery usage under new iMate rom

My friend and I have both starting using the new AKU2 iMate rom recently.
We both had exactly the same software installed, live in the same place, and use the same network. The only problem being, his battery life was dramatically reduced, whereas mine was just the same as with the old o2 software.
For him, reverting back to the o2 software fixed the battery drain problem, so it was definitely a software issue.
After much head scratching, and comparing we've discovered the problem.
It all comes down to the fact that he uses WiFi at least once a day to check for traffic information on our route home. This in itself isn't the cause of the problem, but his use of WiFi is.
We've discovered that the new Comm Manager application does not properly turn off radio comms, even though it claims that it has.
To see the problem, try the following:
1) Fully charge your XDA.
2) Before you go to bed, turn on WiFi using Comm Manager and connect to your access point.
3) Turn WiFi off using Comm Manager.
4) Leave XDA in standby.
Leave the XDA overnight, and the battery will probably be completely discharged by morning.
It appears that the Comm Manager does not properly turn WiFi (or any of the other radios) off, even though it says it has.
WiFi causes the problem to manifest most obviously, as it consumes the most power, but the same is true for all of the other wireless in the XDA.
We tried another test where we fully charged the XDA, switched on all the radios (GSM, bluetooth and WiFi). We then switched them all off, and left the XDA overnight. By morning, the unit was completely dead.
We then repeated the same experiment, but did a soft reset after switching the radios off. When we came back to the XDA in the morning, the battery was still showing 99%.
If he never turns the WiFi on, then his battery performance is the same as with the current o2 rom.
This seems like a major bug, especially as this seems to indicate that putting the unit into 'flight mode', doesn't actually turn the radios off.
We've also tried reverting back to the 1.06 radio rom, and this doesn't fix the problem.
If anyone else out there can test this, please let us know if you see the same thing.
Bagpuss.
Hmm
Can't say categorically on this, but for example the other night (with a battery of around 85%) :
- Just before going to bed, wanted to check my work webmail (sad I know)
- Turned on wifi and connected to wireless router, checked email.
- Turned off wifi, put into flight mode and went to sleep
Got up in the morning, and though I can't remember the exact percentage it certainly wasn't at a level causing concern...probably in the late 70s to early 80s else I would have noticed.
Using the iMate ROM that came out a month or so back.
ROM: 1.30.76WWE (dated 20/02/06)
Radio: 1.09
ExtROM (though most of it was taken off, put back only what was needed and hard reset): 1.30.164WWE
HTH
Cheers

This has been an issue with the Wizard line as well. I have also noticed that the Comm Manager refuses to turn off even when using Space Reclaimer. The program actually has to be forced to close. The funny thing is that I woke up to a battery charge of 96% on my Wizard this morning, checked my email via wifi, shut off the wifi, and now (2 hours later) the battery is showing 83% charge. If I don't use wifi, regardless of whter I switch it off, I could get approximately 3 days out of a charge. I'm not sure what the issue is, but more than one type of device has it.
I dont notice this problem as I dont use the Comm Manager. I use the Antennae on the today screen to turn wifi on or off. I rarely use bluetooth, but supect that this may cause a battery drain as I use the Comm Manager for this, I could try it using the long way, settings, connections, bluetooth.
I wish that "one-button" wifi was an option for us Wizard users, but it's not at the moment without an aftermarket program.
quite interesting observation, but up to my knowledge the left side led doesn't work according to s/w instructions ... it will blink only based on the h/w status for both BT and WiFi ... so if you turn off the WiFi using CommMngr and the led went off .. I think it would be impossible to say that the WiFi is still on ... I faced this problem after flashing the radio to 1.09 before AKU2 and also after AKU2 ... then after a one hard reset this issue was solved by itself ... I tend to believe it's related to some s/w that work in the bacj ground ... like calls filters and traffic monitors

What turns the GPS on/off?

Just got my O2 Orbit yesterday. An awesome piece of kit. It's impossible to see just how small it is in photos somehow. Really nice and so far it's performed great. I happen to find all of the things others have complained about to be plusses (the roller and wheel, the location of the MicroSD card), so it's ideal for me, really ideal. Glad I waited for the Orbit rather than the P3300 too, even though I'd rather give my money direct to HTC! It's much nicer looking.
Anyhow, my question is that I expected GPS on/off to be on the Comm Manager screen but it isn't. Am I right in guessing that what turns the GPS on and off is whether something has COM4 open and listening? So as soon as an app closes COM4, it starts to lose location? It might be nice if there were some programmable delay post-close where it keeps monitoring in case something else opens COM4 again a few minutes later.
I think this is because keeping a fresh GPS signal is severe on the battery life.
I have a BT gps receiver which works around 20 hours on a default nokia battery. But ofcourse the Artemis is a whole pocket/phone which draws its power from a 1200mah battery.
All GPS receivers need to get a fix at the start, this takes from 30 sec. up to 2 min.
It could be when disconnecting it saves the GPS positions so on another connection it can find the satelites faster. But I don't really know how the technical part works and if this is true.
I don't know how exactly it happens programmatically, but what I know for sure is that it is turned on/off by TomTom. As long as TomTom is working, the receiver is working, too.

GPS slow

been new to this phone (O2 orbit), is the GPS on all the time or can you monitor or turn it off. Try some GPS software, but seems to take along time. Wait for memory card so I put on tomtom and i-go. hope they do better.
thanks
The GPS is activated automaticaly by software as it's required, indicated by the flashing orange LED.
The first time to fix is always slow due to the GPS receiver localising, subsequent locks should be quicker to achieve. The process can be speeded up more by using the QuickGPS application that comes with this device.
For me, time to achieve a full 3d lock is about 30 seconds.

How to enable the gps module permant?

I want to enable the gps module of my mda compact iii permant. The problem is, that tomtom enables the module at startup, but if I exit the application, tomto disables the module. It tooks to much time for the gps sync.
Any suggestions?

sorry, no chance. If there is no software, wich is using the GPS, the GPS urns off.
That's okay, because with GPS on, your device will run 4-5 hours, only.
you can use fransons gpsgate
what i usually do is just press the red 'End call' button, this 'minimises' TomTom, so it is still running in the background, thus still connected to GPS

after walking with memory map on, after 2 hours the battery went down only 8% and thats with the cpu overclocked, I reckon it would last a good day with gps always on...
could use visual GPSce its a small free program that just uses the gps to get a siginal and gives details about your position, its not cpu demanding at all and will run in the background with hardly any drain on the battery
