tomtom Nav5 and high battery consumption with PDA Off - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Upgraded from Nav3 to 5 which is working great except that the PDA will not power off automatically with Nav5 running. Also even if I manually switch the PDA off the battery consumption is very high (runs flat overnight). I'm not using bluetooth or WLAN and they are definately off. I don't have any other app's running.
Anyone else have this problem or suggest a workaround?
If I Stop the Nav5 application then power functions as normal but being forgettful it's hard to remember to do this every time!
Of course Tomtom support have been as useless as ever!!

It maybe dumb to suggest, but....
...do you 'Exit Application' when you've finished using TTN5?
If you don't, it will keep polling the Serial Port for your GPS reciever, and thus the handset won't fully 'stand-by' as serial activity will drain power.
I use TTN5, and as long as I exit, I have still got around 2 days out of a battery, with 'careful' usage.
No offence intended at all in this post - just perhaps highlighting the obvious!
R.

You are correct that exiting (ie Stopping) the application resolves the battery drain but I was using TTN3 previously with a serial receiver and that happily shut down when the PDA was off and did not need stopping.
Also with TTN5 running it stops the PDA switching off automatically, I have to switch off with the power switch.

I have an XDA II and M2000. i have the battery drain problem on both. i exit the app like i am supposed to, but when i start the device in the morning it has completely run flat! in the task manager there is nothing running when i put the device in standby...
any further thoughts?
i am using tomtom v5.21 and the latest roms.

Maybe do a scriptlike "shotdown all" before it goes into it's nightsleep
But i don't see a problem in shutting down TTN5 if you don't use it...
I don't even see a problem in switching off the Radio if i'm not listening etc. No pun intended, but if a programm keeps running it's pretty likely it drains the battery. You're just lucky if it doen't...

Solution for increased battery usage under new iMate rom

My friend and I have both starting using the new AKU2 iMate rom recently.
We both had exactly the same software installed, live in the same place, and use the same network. The only problem being, his battery life was dramatically reduced, whereas mine was just the same as with the old o2 software.
For him, reverting back to the o2 software fixed the battery drain problem, so it was definitely a software issue.
After much head scratching, and comparing we've discovered the problem.
It all comes down to the fact that he uses WiFi at least once a day to check for traffic information on our route home. This in itself isn't the cause of the problem, but his use of WiFi is.
We've discovered that the new Comm Manager application does not properly turn off radio comms, even though it claims that it has.
To see the problem, try the following:
1) Fully charge your XDA.
2) Before you go to bed, turn on WiFi using Comm Manager and connect to your access point.
3) Turn WiFi off using Comm Manager.
4) Leave XDA in standby.
Leave the XDA overnight, and the battery will probably be completely discharged by morning.
It appears that the Comm Manager does not properly turn WiFi (or any of the other radios) off, even though it says it has.
WiFi causes the problem to manifest most obviously, as it consumes the most power, but the same is true for all of the other wireless in the XDA.
We tried another test where we fully charged the XDA, switched on all the radios (GSM, bluetooth and WiFi). We then switched them all off, and left the XDA overnight. By morning, the unit was completely dead.
We then repeated the same experiment, but did a soft reset after switching the radios off. When we came back to the XDA in the morning, the battery was still showing 99%.
If he never turns the WiFi on, then his battery performance is the same as with the current o2 rom.
This seems like a major bug, especially as this seems to indicate that putting the unit into 'flight mode', doesn't actually turn the radios off.
We've also tried reverting back to the 1.06 radio rom, and this doesn't fix the problem.
If anyone else out there can test this, please let us know if you see the same thing.
Bagpuss.
Hmm
Can't say categorically on this, but for example the other night (with a battery of around 85%) :
- Just before going to bed, wanted to check my work webmail (sad I know)
- Turned on wifi and connected to wireless router, checked email.
- Turned off wifi, put into flight mode and went to sleep
Got up in the morning, and though I can't remember the exact percentage it certainly wasn't at a level causing concern...probably in the late 70s to early 80s else I would have noticed.
Using the iMate ROM that came out a month or so back.
ROM: 1.30.76WWE (dated 20/02/06)
Radio: 1.09
ExtROM (though most of it was taken off, put back only what was needed and hard reset): 1.30.164WWE
HTH
Cheers

This has been an issue with the Wizard line as well. I have also noticed that the Comm Manager refuses to turn off even when using Space Reclaimer. The program actually has to be forced to close. The funny thing is that I woke up to a battery charge of 96% on my Wizard this morning, checked my email via wifi, shut off the wifi, and now (2 hours later) the battery is showing 83% charge. If I don't use wifi, regardless of whter I switch it off, I could get approximately 3 days out of a charge. I'm not sure what the issue is, but more than one type of device has it.
I dont notice this problem as I dont use the Comm Manager. I use the Antennae on the today screen to turn wifi on or off. I rarely use bluetooth, but supect that this may cause a battery drain as I use the Comm Manager for this, I could try it using the long way, settings, connections, bluetooth.
I wish that "one-button" wifi was an option for us Wizard users, but it's not at the moment without an aftermarket program.
quite interesting observation, but up to my knowledge the left side led doesn't work according to s/w instructions ... it will blink only based on the h/w status for both BT and WiFi ... so if you turn off the WiFi using CommMngr and the led went off .. I think it would be impossible to say that the WiFi is still on ... I faced this problem after flashing the radio to 1.09 before AKU2 and also after AKU2 ... then after a one hard reset this issue was solved by itself ... I tend to believe it's related to some s/w that work in the bacj ground ... like calls filters and traffic monitors

3 questions. gps speed / battery / tomtom splashscreen

heya. i've got 3 questions, hope some1 could help.
i recently upgraded my p3300 to WM6 (official HTC rom) and as i was at it, started to wonder about a few things.
1) in tomtom, when configuring the GPS, i can change the baudspeed (actually at 4800). if i increase that, would a) the GPS navigation while driving be smoother, b) i get a faster satelite fix and most important: c) would the battery last less or same?
2) about the battery... i use very few apps and most of the times i make sure they are 100% closed. i use the calendar, notes and few phonecalls per day. sometimes i turn on tomtom for a few minutes to find a street when walking... but i think the battery life is very short (an average of 1% per hour in standby, more battery loss when using the pda, making calls, etc)
is there any tweaks, programs or whatsoever to see what exactly is consuming XYZ of my battery? and improve it's life?
3) after upgrading to WM6, whenever i start tomtom, i get that logo-splash screen (didnt get that before) is there a way to remove it?
i have many more doubts, but i think i'll leave em for when i solved this things. thx for answer.

1) I didn't noticed differences neither in fix time nor in navigation smoothness.
2) I doubt that it is possible to measure power used by certain application directly. I had problem with power drain and resolved it by switching applications off and on (S2U was guilty), but it seems to me that my Artemis use more power after upgrade to WM6 to.
any1 got any more comments? which is the best way to track your battery life and improve it? any program around to help on this task?
If you want to compare your device power consumption to my Artemis I'll give you some measurements (not very accurate actually):
When I tested my device while playing 320x240 divx movie with TCPMP, fullscreen, brightness set to max, no audio - battery operated about 5,5 - 6 hours before PDA powered off automatically.
During 8 hours in stand-by (I didn't used PDA at all) it was about 5-8% battery drained, but when I switched Pocket Plus indicators (memory, battery, SD free space) off - after 8 hours of stand-by there was 100% battery (full).
Hope this will help you. If you do your own measures let us know.
Good Sunday
ok, as far as i have seen, there is no application that tells your how much battery each application you run, uses. i guess thats normal.
but, is there something like the windows taskmanager, telling you how much CPU and MEMORY each application that runs in the background uses? i think if there is one, that would give a good start on my investigations.

i'll try it, however i've read somewhere that this program itself is a battery-drainer already?
With BS I had 100% battery after 8 hours standby and I didn't noticed more power consumption while normal use (some phone calls, PIM, games, Internet), but you must try to know how it works on your device. Try it and then write about your findings.
Hi,
baudrate has noting to do with refreshing inverval of GPS. The refresh wrt the satellites is determined in the chipset, and the baudrate is the speed in which the chipset (which is actually an external device) communicates with the serial port of the device. Normally speaking the baudrate for gps is 4800 (it is NMEA norm), but also other rates exist for example for bluetooth devices the baudrate is only the speed with which the serial transfer of data is done. It is in the end the GPS software you use that will determine how fast your position is updated on your screen. It can happen that if you set the baudrate wrong, that the data is not received properly, because the software expects the data to be presented at the baudrate you set, and the device delivers at a different rate (like speeking too fast to somebody). It is therefore important to set it correctly.

You could try TaskManager 2.7 from FdcSoft. It shows CPU load en memory load.
Just add the .exe to the sd card and run the file. Use the tabs to selct Process / CPU or any of the other tabs.

thanks for the explanation.
going back to batterystatus, i am tetsing it now. specially the overclock tool to actually UNDERclock my phone, hoping the battery lasts longer.
however, as for what i've seen, when the phone goes into suspend, batterystatus sets back to the 201mhz until it is unsuspended. so that's actually useless.
but it tells me enough info to get an idea about my power consumption, etc.

Not exactly useless - if you read e-book or WWW pages your PDA can save power with BS (although I don't know exactly how much).
About underclocking in standby there is explanation from BS Howto:
Could you make the cpu clock down while it is in standby?
There is no need to. Most of the devices are doing this by themself. As soon as you push the power-button (explicitly not a program mapped to a custom button for this job), your device will gradually stop execution of code and clocks the cpu down.
The latter implies that as soon as you push the power-button, BatteryStatus and any overclocking by BatteryStatus stops working.
Some tests showed that your device automatically steps down to 52MHz and maybe there is a state while the cpu is completely stopped (0 MHz) too.
I'm curious what is CPU speed of Artemis in standby. Maybe somebody knows that and will share with us?

Batter drain after gps usage.

so i found something strange.
the phone will last 24 hrs and lose about 5-10% battery life with light usage.
if i use google maps or any other gps app, the battery after the app is exited / task list show no running tasks, the battery will drain in under 8 hrs. or faster.
my only guess is, tho the app is not running the gps chip is still tracking / fixing to location with nothing making the calls. sort of like a stale process that does not list.
any other fixes for this besides a reboot?
It probably doesn't release the gps resources since they are shared with the other apps that use the gps. I haven't really got the result you're getting, maybe others can confirm or provide solutions.
GPS Power Drain
Yes, I get this from time to time, as I did on all my previous HTC devices. Supposedly, if you exit the program properly (ie, X to close), the program releases the GPS use and power drain stops. Many times, this seems not to happen and power draw continues at a high rate. When this happens, a soft reset is all that seems to stop it.
I have searched this issue for several years and tried many different settings and apps to close/edit resources, but it still occurrs from time to time, with no real pattern.
Guess we have to live with it and do soft reset if power draw is too high after GPS use. I have just gotten in the habit after using TOMTOM for a trip to reset the phone, just to be sure it kills the GPS usage.
My Kaiser used to do this often, I'd have to soft reset to get the drain from the GPS to go away, but I have yet to see this happen on the Tilt 2 and I use the built-in GPS quite a lot actually... I use it for Waze, TomTom, iGO, GPSToday.. I even use it in GCzII for geocaching a bit although the built-in GPS still blows for accuracy.

High battery drain

Im trying to find out what is draining the battery on my EVO EVEN WHEN THE PHONE IS WITH THE SCREEN OFF and SUPPOSED to be in STAND BY MODE (using the power button on the phone). I have SETCPU installed to LOWER the CPU to 245/384 when the screen is off.. HOWEVER THE BATTERY SEEMS TO DRAIN .
This afternoon I charged he batter till the green light came on. Made one phone call for 10 minutes and then later another one for 10 minutes.. I do have GPS and BLUETOOTH ALWAYS turned on since I use them all the time WHEN the phone is on for various APPS and my bluetooth earpiece and car adaptor... After those 2 calls the phone is down to almost 70% from 100%...
I have SYSTEM PANEL and also JUICEPOLTTER, SPARE PARTS and MINIFREEMANAGER installed and the programs are set according to what I have been reading on here...
SPARE PARTS tells me the phone has be MORE THAN ONE DAY with sleeping and the most used app is ANDROID SYSTEM. I look at SYSTEMPANEL and UNDER MONITOR HISTORY I can see that even when there is NO DEVICE USAGE, I still have around 15-30% CPU Usage (is this normal?). I also have it set to get email etc automatically.. some every 2 hours and some software every 4-6 hours.
What could be causing the battery drain? What is the best program to use to see the cause?
Im also not 100% sure SETCPU is using the screen off profile.. HOW an I tell this??? Any help would be appeciated...
Have you tried turning GPS off? If it's not actually being used, it won't drain the battery much or at all. However, if you're actually using it, it will.
If you're using navigation, that's a big battery killer, as it does constant GPS + a large amount of data transfer.
One thing you can try is to open Spare Parts, then go to Battery History and choose "Partial wake usage" in the top box. Things with partial wake locks are generally the biggest idle battery users.

I also just Installed a BRIGHTNESS WIDGET and turned off auto-brightness. the widget I am using has 8 brightness settings and double click for auto. I am using currently on the second brightness setting on the widget (it shows little ticks). I am told lowering the brightness from auto will help...
I read in another forum that there was a bug in the Facebook application that was causing the application to refresh its information several times an hour instead of once in a while at specific times. It would use power and bandwith when the phone is even in sleep mode with screen off. They also mentioned that there was a fix already issued for this. I cannot find the link any more to source it for you where I read this.
My stock EVO runs for days with the radios turned off until I need them.
Sometimes, if it ain't broke ...
My evo has been draining fast without all that on and well it's annoying. The only compensation I have is owning 3 batteries.

From your list I can only see two things I would kill these programs and wait and see what happens.
WUNDEREADIO
FACEBOOK
Everything else must run. For me Slacker radio kept my EVO on all day long eventhough I was not using it. The new version seems to fix that issue. I am guessing your problem is WUNDEREADIO. I would reboot (resets your battery information) kill Wundereadio. Then go to Settings, About, Battery and monitor your Awake Time vs Up Time. Write down the numbers. Turn off your phone and wait 10 minutes. You should see a gap in time. If so then it is Wundereadio.
Good luck
I think slacker and wunderradio were in the list because I just used them.. wunderradio inst in the list today.. BUT SLACKER is but not in the partial wake.. its in background ...
I changed my backlight setting from auto to using a widget that has 8 brightness settings and it is on the 3rd setting.. I dont know what the AUTO backlight was setting the screen at...
I also adjusted the MINIFREEMANAGER according to some settings I found online..
also I have SPARE PARTS set to AGGRESSIVE... would that have anything to do with it??
Check systempanel first thing when you wake up, but go into monitor, then history, and switch plot to top apps. It will tell you exactly whats been using the battery/cpu when there's been no usage.
As you know, the bt sucks a lot of battery, if you really do use it often, with a bunch of apps, you may want to consider tasker, which can be set up to turn bt on only when your on a call, or using certain apps.
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Will tasker turn on bluetooth when a call comes in? IE will it let the bluetooth earpiece ring so I can answer it from the bluetooth earpiece?? also can I set tasker so that when get in my car, it will KNOW I am in range of a bluetooth speakerphone and it will turn on BT and connect??
I leave BT on all the time for these reasons....
Looks like tasker wont do anything for me with Bluetooth. The earpieces take too long to connect when a call comes in or I make a call and some even auto answer when they connect which I don't want. I wonder how much battery drain Bluetooth and GPS use if left on but idle?
Sent from my EVO4G using Tapatalk.
Yeah, it would have depended on how long it took to pair. Still try checking the apps through systempanel after a few hours of non-use though. That should help.
And gps doesn't use much until its being used for something, but bt is a constant drain.
Double post
On my old tp2 Bluetooth didn't the battery much. I guess it does on the evo

OK so I have been running for the past day and 1/2 without blutooth turned on.. I only have 3G and GPS turned on. Still it seems the battery drains faster then it should. I look at SPARE PARTS and it doesnt show anything out of the ordinary on PARTIAL WAKEUP. I have SETCUP to 384/245 when screen off. I do use SYSTEMPANEL to look at what is running and it does show a LOT of stuff such as SLACKER, SOUND HOUND, JUICE PLOTTER, etc... what else can I do for battery life.. I left for work at 8:00 and when I got to work at 8:15, the battery was already at 90% without doing anything....
Aldo how much battery drain does BT take if I leave it on? its a pain to remember to turn it on when I get in the car and turn it off when I leave...

what would be the best kernal for me to have ?

my battery drains like a bugatti veyron doing 252mph constantly
so what would you advise . is the kernal i have now the best or should i change .. i dont want to reall lose much performance on what i have now but would like the battery to maybe improve if possible ...
from full charge taking plug out searching market for 2 mins the battery drains 5-8% in matter of mins
and i have only had the phone a week
With that kind of drains the problems the kernel won't change that much. There is probably a app that causes the battery drain so looking in to that will have more effect. Also the brightness/screen on is the biggest drain and kernel won't do much about that.
You said that you have the phone a week, the battery needs some time to reach it's full potential and you probably use the phone a lot because it's new. So use the phone normally for another week, after that week let the phone drain until it shuts itself off, leaf it off and charge it till it's full. (there is a different calibration method but this always worked for me)
What do you have now? Stock or rooted?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
First of all, I would assume that you don't use the phone non-stop (it would be justified to lose power in a few hours if you're on it non-stop).
I recently had issues with power consumption as well. What I did was:
1) check the built in battery monitor: menu-settings-about phone-battery-battery use. The bad thing about this monitor is that it does not differentiate well the apps consuming power, but you can still see if there's something wrong, as the most consumption should come normally from the screen and voice calls. For me, the most consumption was made by com.htc.bg, which, if I let the monitor on for a few seconds, would transform in the calendar app. Weird stuff. I unchecked the calednar auto sync from menu-settings-accounts and sync. It may have slowed the power loss down, but not significantly. I noticed a significant loss of battery by WiFi. I realized, I needed more information so:
2) I installed an app called 'Power Tutor'. What it does is, it calculates which apps consumes power, and it shows you in percentages. After install, you need to start the 'power profiler'. It will appear in your notification bar. If you let it run, after a few hours, you can see in "view application power usage" who is using power. That's how I discovered that my winamp app was really off the charts using power like crazy. So I went in the winamp settings, and I unchecked some options that could have determined this power consumption, like wireless sync, automatic mount as USB drive, etc. There was actually an option that was overriding the wifi power management, stating that the wifi does not stop after 180 seconds of standby. Basically, if you have wifi on, and you stop using the phone for 3 minutes, the phone automatically turns off the wifi. This was not happening any more, due to winamp. So I unchecked all those options, and voila. It worked, I have now normal battery life.
Good luck!
be aware of a couple of things
1. battery drain for the 1st few weeks are high because of a couple of factors, the battery "learns" and gets conditioned over a period of time (doesnt use the old 16hr charge process). its a new device for you so its a novelty, you probably mess about with it with the screen on more than you think.
2. there is a configuration within HTC's builds and in the memory chip of the battery to stop over charging. the device will charge to 100 and then slowly deplete to 90% while still saying full on the phone. as soon as you disconnect it recalibrates to the correct value which is anywhere between 90% and 100% depending at which part of the cycle you catch it
Some other tips to increase battery life, from a friend of mine in the Romanian forum:
1) use the app watchdog, it will warn you when an app is using too much of the processor and will ask you if you want to close it.
2) juice defender with the paid add-on 'ultimate juice' - with the correct settings... it's amazing.
3) Dial *#*#4636#*#* - phone information-network type: select gsm auto prl. The phone will stay on 3G when it has good signal, and switch to 2G when it doesnt, saving battery
4) Change the wallpaper to a static one, not a live one.
5) Go to menu-settings-accounts and sync and increase sync intervals for weather, news, or even set them to sync manually when you choose.
i will try and answer everything at once ..
ok my screen is on 13% brightness
i hardly ever use my phone , the only real use was to root , s-off, put ROM ETC ON
I reply to about 50 texts ish per day and search the market for literally 1-2 mins to see what new apps are in
i dont play games or anything
the thing the battery uses most is the screen and as i say i have it on monochrome theme with 13% brightness, there is nothing synced , i check automatically for email etc .. actually beautiful widgets is set to auto update every 4 hours
i never use wifi as i have a 3gb download/data usage, i dont use gps ...well i do but i have had no need to .. thats about all i can tell ya
rastaman the pt2 is a bit weird it should stay at 100 if just taken out of charge
I calibrated the battery and that made no difference.
