Uh, get an Exchange Server? Otherwise, get used to it.
IntelliSync

Try IntelliSync. I think it has support for multiple hosts.

That is not as easy as it sounds is it.?
Say for instance that his company have a policy that does not permit activesync over-the-air. OR they run Exchange 2000 and doesn't benefit from an EXPENSIVE upgrade just to get him to use his mobile!
And before you say that he could get one of those "free exchange services server" , one could use those I know that, but what if you are dealing with company-secrets which can't be routed through other servers than internal company..
many aspects to this little question (and answers)
just my 2-cents
Hi all,
I am trying out a Desire this weekend, in general like it. I have got the Exchange sync to work for mail, cal & contacts however if I try to access the Company Directory (GAL) or Search the Inbox I get nothing returned.
I downloaded TouchDown to test and this works fine. But I dont want to use a 3rd Party tool for email (or I could have got a Nexus).
Has anybody else seen this error before, or have any idea's? Other wise its mail if back Monday.
Thank for your help.
Peter
Nobody can help
So HTC say, remove the sync and re-create. Does nothing.
Company IT say there are no more settings to change.
Am I the only person that has seen this, I found one other when searching web, but nobody replied.....
As an alternative would look at a GAL address book viewer?
Any help would be great, newbie with the phone and forum.
Whats your Exchange Version? For me with Echange 2010 it works fine.

The OWA server and Exchange Server is 2007. Did you have issues in the past?
I have the same issue only with Exchange 2003 (we'll be moving to 2007 soon). Was chuffed to finally get my email working today (firewall and all that) and have realised I can't browse the GAL. Might try Touchdown (although I had installed it before - will it let me use it as a Trial again???)...

I and a colleague of mine have the same problem with Exchange 2003 SP2. GAL search works fine on other phones (i.e. the iPhone).
I've seen people report that it works for them though, so I have no clue what's wrong, but I have an open ticket with HTC on the issue.
Well l'm using touchdown at the moment and it appears to work really well. Everything I could want from a client. Need to see if it is worth $20 though before taking the plunge. HTC Mail is a bit limited in comparison. although the OP doesn't want to buy a third party app I would say that is one of the points of Android that if the stock app doesn't work you can get hold of an app that does...

Thanks for the feedback, I also opened a ticket. Seems like very few people have reported this as and issue they either get all or nothing syncing.

I tried Touchdown, the issuethat I have is that the calander is then not combined which I really do like as a feature, and as far as I can see I cant just use it for email and get it to link to the standard apps I have to use it for contacts and Cal as well.
Same for me. I am syncing mails, calendar and contacts without any problems. Only company directory does not work.
I think it is not a connection problem. It is always telling me that nobody could be found. That is even happening when network connections are disabled. So it seems if this tool does not even try to connect.
Thats interesting, I did not try turning off the comm's, so at least it points to a software issue then. More hope HTC might fix it.
I think there may be an issue with contacts lookup via GAL/ Exchange 2003 on HTC STOCK Mail app. nothing shows up.

I had the same problem running Exchange 2003
GAL becomes inaccessible if security profiles are enabled ("Enforce password on device", etc..) and "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings" is disabled.
A bad workaround is to enable "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings", but that may prevent you from remotely wiping some devices and prevent some devices from initializing security profiles.
A better workaround is to add your account to the exceptions list. Doing that will enable access to GAL but disable the exchange lock screen.
I believe this is happening because either Android 2.1 or HTC mail application either doesn't support Exchange security profiles completely, or doesn't report them correctly.
Hi all, we have a product that might be of interest to you called GALSync Server. Unfortunately I can't post a URL but I'm sure you can find it with a bit of Googling.
It works by sync'ing a copy of the GAL into selected users' Exchange mailboxes which ActiveSync or BES then syncs in turn to the user's device. Works with iPhone or Windows Mobile.
We love it.
But we would wouldn't we.
Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the heads up, however its not what I am looking for:
1. You dont support Android from what I can tell.
2. I have to get the company to set it up.
I was hoping to either fix the HTC sync or an app on the handset that can get access.
Thanks
Agree with baronb. HTC needs to fix this issue. Corp IT Administrators will not make exceptions to their security settings. Also, I know from using Touchdown by Nitrodesk that it does, and CAN work.

I talked with HTC hot desk who were not very helpful and seemed to have lost my previous information. They said I should wait for an update!
At this point I am starting to look at alternatives as the lack of GAL for me while on the road was an issue last week.
Is there any more info on this one? I am having this bug too and it is the only thing stopping me from recommending the Desire as a suitable phone for my company to use for all staff right now!
Nothing, yet will bug Hotdesk again this week. The more people to log the error maybe the faster they will fix it.....+44 8458900079

Thanks for that. Will get myself on the phone later!
One of my co-workers just got an HTC Droid Incredible. I kind of talked up the 'corporate directory' feature that I have on my HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint) and we can't seem to get his phone to be able to search our corporate directory and show phone numbers. I'm not sure what the software difference is between these two phones really, they both are HTC and they both are SenseUI so the Incredible ought be capable of at least as much as my little Hero right?
Anyhow, here's the steps that work for me, if anyone can shed some light on how we can get this rolling on the incredible let me know!
A. Requires an Exchange/Activesync account setup within android's 'Accounts and sync' Dialog. (I choose to sync calendar and email only, not contacts).
B. Once syncing is working well, just go to the "People" App, press the Menu button, then pick "Corporate Directory"
C. Search the directory for an individual, and view their contact information, my Hero is able to show the telephone number in addition to the name and email address however his incredible only shows the e-mail. This is true whether he is syncing contacts with the phone or not. We are both hitting the same corporate servers with the same account settings but getting different results. If you think our IT department will be of any help, you would be mistaken as they are clueless.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance all for your input!
I can confirm that y Incredible ONLY shows name and email contact info in the Corporate Directory. This is a BIG pain for me coming from the Droid with the "Corporate Directory" app that showed all the info.
Also back in the days when I was running SenseUI on my G1, I remember the built-in directory showed phone numbers as well. I wonder why the version on the Incredible fails here.
I can pull name email and phone numbers on mine. I did apply the latest update, so that may have something to do with it.
I have received the latest update as well. But I only get names and emails when I search...weird.
Thanks for confirming that I'm not alone with the inconsistencies *bangs head against wall.
Anyone have any ideas for a solution to this?
^bump^
Wondering if anyone else can confirm/deny this as I'm trying to figure out what might be causing the problem... thanks for your help all!
I had a similiar problem. I installed Touchdown and now have full access to phone, email, and address. We are using an exchange 2003 server not sure if that has anything to do with it.
If root ever happens maybe this:

Touchdown looks interesting but $20 for a feature that ought to work is a bit odd doncha think? Same goes for rooting the device, I mean, HTC Sense running on Android 2.1 ought to be close enough right? Should I have my co-worker lodge a complaint with HTC and/or Verizon on this one? It seems a bit off to me that this works for me and not for him, even though we have 2 different phones...
same here...
I have the same issue.
Exchange 2003 Enterprise, Global Address Book lookup works on every other device we have here including other Android devices. But myself and another person here who have Incredibles cannot do Company Directory (GAL) lookup.
I am suspecting that this is an application layer issue. This is my one major complaint about Android phones. Every hardware vendor has their own code layer on top of the operating system, and they tend to mess things up like this. Why else would HTC phones not hand the phone number to you other than they just jacked up their implementation of Android....
I am running latest firmware (2.1-update1), and software 1.22.605.2
[edit] We can look up people in the company directory, but the results are name and email only. No address, phone number, etc.
This is fixed in the 2.2 leaks. So once it's final it should be sorted for everyone.
Do we konw if this is affecting everyone with an Incredible, or only people running a certain version of Exchange?
Email and phone number access is a priority to me. without it, not worth much.
The default app didn't work on the Dinc when I got it. It also has some other quirks related to searching etc...
Use Touchdown. Makes the phone complete.
Cost $20 but the phone is useless to me without so $20 is the same as a case, screen protector, or any other app I buy to get something I want.
Apparently the upcoming OTA will fix this issue, but there were more than that as an issue..
Gingerbread Corporate directory
Could someone say if corporate directory is implemented in Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 ?
Hi,
is there a way to disable saving sent mails on Desire? I keep getting this cc sent mails on my Gmail interface, and I find it rather irritating. I found that I need to disable this, but can't seem to find it anywhere in my options. I'm using IMAP.
I know it is probably a nab question but I have fiddled with it for some time, alas with no success. Hope HTC did implemented this though, otherwise it would be a major flaw, like not being able to link your contact card with your email address.
Any insight much appreciated.
Bring my post up.
Anyone managed to find a workaround on their Desire?
I recently convinced my management to test an android device (dinc2) to possibly replace our Blackberry server/smartphones.
I got the Dinc2 over the weekend, rooted it (MIUI 1.8.5) and updated the kernal Tiamat 1.1.2.
I added my corporate email account (stock email client) with no issues, send and receive work fine... everything is wonderful except two things.
I seem to have trouble resolving my companies GAL-Global address list.
sending an email to anyone in my contacts works fine, their name is presented as a selection... anyone within the company but outside of my contacts resolves maybe 5% of the time.
We are running exchange 2010.
Is this a common problem?
Is there anything i can do to fix it?
I looked at Touchdown and K9 but i didnt see any info referring to this specific question of mine.
The second, i dont seem to be able to change the font size within email, is there anywhere i can change that?
I know there is an option to change font size within phone settings but it doesnt apply to email.
Suggestions are appreciated
no suggestions..... this issue is really becoming a problem and a real deal breaker.
i would hate to have to go back to BB
Our GAL works just fine with my DInc2. Running MIUI rom with Exchange 2007 server.
Im running the latest MIUI with the JDKernal and do not have any issues with my corporate email.
Curious, why did you root and then test? Have you tested this with stock?
Is your company going to root the phones if they switch from Blackberry?
Also, the stock email has very few settings that can be modified. There are better mail apps in the market such as K9, I think its called, that are much more customizable.
Well, for some reason from home i seem to be okay, names resolve most of the time.
It seems that when im not on WiFi names do not resolve.
Going to have to do more testing to confirm the potential issue.
Stock seemed okay... from my home and on my wireless network. I did not test stock other than my home... impatient i guess.
Some folks will root and some will not, i need to cover all bases.
