I'm in japan for another month and I want to toss on a fresh copy of Fresh 3.5.0.1 onto my evo... Does anyone know if I would have any problems with activation or any other issue I might have by just using wifi and leaving the phone on airplane mode? I don't use it for anything but games, maps, and voip calls

I'm not sure if you can activate a Sprint phone there. If they have cdma service you would have to flash a company that's uses cdma and use there esn number. As far as WiFi you should be good to go. Check sprint. Com and look under international coverage and see if Japan is covered. If so just pay for the international roaming plan.

Is there anyone around that actually knows?
Basically, can my evo do all the needed activation/syncing over wifi?
My guess would be no seeing as how even evos without wifi access still need to activate. They probably avoid all that hoopla and just have them activate over evdo. I don't think flashing will be a problem if you won't be using any cellular connections. I'm assuming it'll just activate when you get home and turn off airplane mode.
There's nothing to "activate". As long as you don't do a complete factory reset of the phone (which there's no need to do), nothing gets "activated" when you switch ROMs.

Its always a good idea to wipe when you switch ROMs.
Wiping only entails deleting data and caches. Unless you do a radio flash or something, there's nothing to activate. No self-respecting developer forces a radio flash with their ROM, it's a seperate flash entirely. If they did, there would be a lot of bricked devices.
Hey everyone, I'm new here to the forum and have had my EVO for about 6 months now. First things first, I have searched quite a bit and havent really found problems specific to mine on here or google. Maybe I am just not searching for the right thing so bare with me please. A few months after I got it, I started realizing the 3g would take a long time to respond sometimes. For example, I would type in a web address and hit go and the 3g icon on the status bar would not do anything for sometimes up to 1 minute causing the browser to display (page not found). Other apps that require internet do this as well. One day I decided to do a factory reset and the problem went away. After a few weeks, it came back so i did another reset and fixed it. Now back to the same old problem. Finally got tired of doing resets so I'm trying to find out the real solution to the problem. I constantly clean the cache. Previously I did it manually, but now I use cache cleaner which seems to do a good job. I have also tried speed boost lite which doesnt do a bad job either but uninstalled since i like cache cleaner better. Profile and PRL updates help only for a short time even though it didnt really update after checking software versions. I've taken the phone to sprint, they've checked it out, said its fine, and that 10-30 seconds is normal and nothing to complain about. Maybe that would be the case if it was NORMAL but it is not. Has anyone heard of this or have any ideas to fix it? Sorry for all of the reading but if you have any advice at all, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Cameron
Well there 3g service is down the drain right now and the lack of good ping could be the reason so my guess is 3g sucks it happens to my evo a lot so I use wifi and 4g when I can

Thanks for your reply. I'm am happy with the 3G most of the time. At my house, it is almost as fast my wifi (no i dont have slow internet at home either lol). I have no problem streaming HQ Pandora, youtube, and netflix in crystal clear quality on 3G. It is not the network, it is an issue with the phone, a setting, or an app that is causing the problem. If I was to factory reset the phone right now, the problem would go away. I just dont want to reset it anymore and have to reinstall everything. Time to try to figure out the real problem and stop taking the lazy way around
That is weird could be your phone you could back up your apps with titanium backup and restore away or try to unroot then reroot

i just reset, I did forget to mention in the OP that i am not rooted. Haven't gotten the balls to do it yet. I haven't found a good thread to read up on to root yet. Not that i've been looking that hard. I would like to root very soon though
Best way to root I think is unrevoked you need a computer but its easy as pie there are also guides on YouTube

ya i tried that before but every time i try something goes wrong and i cant do it. Even when i follow videos my phone just doesnt do the same thing as theirs for some reason. lol who knows
Just for ****s and giggles I gave it another go on rooting with unrevoked. Actually got it this time. I have no clue what happened last time. Went smoothly this time. So just basic root, nothing fancy. All i really wanted out of the root was wireless tether. Still want to figure out the unresponsive 3G issue though before it happens again
Glad to hear your on the dark side (rooted) you can learn a lot just by being rooted
evo on cm7
Ya its nice so far but the reset did not fix the unresponsive 3G. Ugh its so annoying! Nobody has any ideas?!
Flash your first rom and do a nandroid
evo on cm7
I am now running cm7 nightly build 83 off of rom manager. I love it!
I'm not having the 3g issue now. Internet seems much faster on this rom
hello forum..i been having a problem getting 3G on my evo i dont know what else to do i been looking online for fixes and no success so far (obviously) sometimes i get 3G for a few minutes other times it shows 3G but its greyed out but most of the time theres just no service at all...i am in a 3G area i can connect to 4G but very little (not really in my area) and i connect to wifi...im rooted but im on the stock sense rom till i figure this out..i called sprint and did a few resets but it didnt last after i hung up (of course) ...please help..any information would be appreciated
p.s. let me know if you need anymore info
Well, are you in an area where Sprint's 3g network is overloaded [therefore slow]?
The switches at the towers are set to send phones to 1x [to reduce the load] in times where it's necessary.
That sounds like it's what's happening to you.
Especially since you sometimes get 3g.
i wish it was but the other evos in this house have full 3g -__- im hoping perhaps theres a way to refresh or restart my 3g if thats even possible?
I don't how much help this would be but if you call Sprint they can send refresh signals to your phone. Maybe try that? Edit: Not sure if these are the resets your talking about.

You can turn the radio off and on via settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > data enabled
It's important to note that, just because other phones are getting 3g and you're only sometimes getting it, it could still be the switches at the tower.
You can try updating your radio to the newest version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Or wiping and reflashing/ruu your rom/kernel.
Sprint could also completely reset your line [on their end] and cause the phone to re-provision.
thank you i will definitely try this ...but how do i flash the radio? in recovery?

That is correct.
does it mean anything if i flashed the radio and it started loading and went to the main recovery part like like where it says reboot, install from sd, ect?

It just prepared it.
Now you have to restart the phone and it will go to a screen and you have to sit and wait for it to finish.
DO NOT TAKE THE BATTERY OUT.
It can take a few.
''/ still no luck...but thank you
Still need help...btw my battery is shot could this possibly be a culprit? my battery does last more then 3-4 hours
So i rooted my SGII T989 last night and did nothing else besides freeze some of the bloat with Ti. I turned off WiFi to run speedtest.net, and I'd get errors. Tried to go online, nothing. Tried to get any data from EDGE... nothing.
Unrooted and wiped everything, factory reset... nope. I called T-Mobile to switch to the new sim... nothing. I tried the airplane mode/reboot, resetting my APN, and all the other usual things... nada. My wifi works, I can send and recieve basic texts and calls, just can't get data. Oh, and I still have 4.5 G left on my plan.
Anyone have any suggestions before I ship this thing back?
*Edit*
Sent the beast packing, waiting on my replacement to arrive. I tried everything I could think of, including going into service mode... Maybe this should be seen as another "possible danger" of using odin?
Nothing? No one else has had this problem?
with no data its usually a sim card or ur efs has been screwed!
I tried both my old and new sim card... so i don't think it's that. Don't know enough about the subject, but wouldn't a hosed EFS also mess with my voice data? I suppose there wouldn't be any possible way of getting the EFS back on there, right?
Hello,
I have a Galaxy Nexus with the stock ROM. Rooted running 4.0.2. I had Market Enabler running to switch to the T-Mobile Network. This setup had been working fine for a couple of weeks now. All of a sudden today, after I visited the Google Play store online for some reason I can now no longer make phone calls!
Market Enabler will not load any longer at all. It doesn't force close, I just get a blank screen. I tried removing it's root permissions. Then clearing the cache and deleting it but no good. I tried reinstalling it, no good.
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried rebooting the phone a couple of times and no help either!
I've tried restoring from backup using the Rom Manager to the original and still doesn't work!
I'm kinda bumping so that I get help!
phone calls are not related to market enabler..

sms works?
ur phone show signal?

Thanks for replying. Nothing works, no SMS, no 3G. Wifi does, but nothing related to the "sim". The network signal comes and goes, but I can't do anything related to it.
If u go in settings - info about ur phone, can u see ur baseband radio info or there is some "unknown" ?
That would mean ur efs partition get corrupted probably, which is not good sometimes

got an old phone to test your SIM?
Rooted&Unlocked Nexus can't make calls or SMS; connects to internet ok from network
I'm having a similar problem. Got the nexus from a friend and tried to activate it on my phone line and the Verizon tech reps say it looks like the activation is "stuck at the switch". Checked the ESN (clean), checked authenticity (ok), not on a lost/stolen list... can't figure out what the issue is.
Any suggestions? this has been pretty frustrating...
A bit of background:
- Did a factory data reset (wiped devlik, data, cache)
- Getting 4G signal; can connect to the internet/sync data
- 3 new SIM cards attempted in the past 3 days; currently on 1 for the past day
- Tried *228, updated roaming; can't activate phone (says call a rep)
Try a factory reset. A friend of mine had an issue about making phone calls on his Galaxy S II and a few reboots made the phone talk again.
Alternatively, shut down the phone, pull battery for a few hours. Put battery back in phone, boot up. Sometimes things get a little FUBAR'd and battery pulls can solve some problems.
still not working...
Looks like things went through the verizon switch....but still can't call or text.
Would unrooting fix it? Did a factory reset again and pulled battery and sim... unfortunately no change
