Oct. 6th 6.5 Upgrade!!!! - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Seems that according to Wmexperts the TP2, Diamond2 and Snap (I think that was the third one) will be getting their 6.5 WM upgrade the same day the new OS celebrates its release.
This is great for those leery of flashing cooked ROMs and also good for the cooks I am guessing as it should give them some new stable material to play with
And as the upgrade is supposed to include a Manila upgrade this shbould include even more functionality (thoguhb I am guessing it will only be Manila 2.5 and not the newer 2.6).
Well for me this is perfect. I will be able to enjoy my new TP2, figuring it out and how everything works and then after around a month I can upgrade and start discovering even more new things
I assume most here will upgrade or flash a cooked ROOM so I won' how many will make the jump. But what are your opinions on the matter? Sound off below.

ive tried a cooked rom with winmo6.5 and it sucks. i hate the new messaging app and i couldnt get mms to send on the tmous version.

"just lol"...

I quite enjoy the current Telstra ROM as it is. But I have no problem if there is a newer ROM (based on WM6.5). I am happy to try something new. Hopefully more fun on its way.

I hope we can choose to use the TF3D Start Menu rather than that honeycomb crap. That's going to be a huge deciding factor for me. I can't stand the honeycomb menu.

I rather the honeycomb menu.

Yeah! I've tried a couple of 6.5 ROMS and they just suck. It's nothing to do with the cooks. WM 6.5 is just a coat of paint on 6.1. As weird as it may sound I love the look and feel of the native WinMo interface. I love the complexity and don't get all this talk about it not looking beautiful. Win Mo is way ahead of its time, no mobile OS comes close. It just has a bad rap because a lot of people are not smart enough to use it.

I also love Windows interface and think it's better then manila. That's the only interface I use, even though I have the standard edition to EnergyRom Genesis.

6.5 thumbs up!
i feel that the flow of scrolling in 6.5 is a huge improvement over 6.1 along with the spacing of the menus makes it much easier to navigate with fingers rather than a stylus. manilla 2.1 is better than 2.5 but if i have to choose between either malilla or just titanium, i'd have to go with?????? i don't know i switch all the time !!!!!!!! energy rom genisis standard has the option of both!!

I hate the honeycomb menu too on the WIN6.5.. hope it can be make look like the standard menu later by xda when it released.

I've used the simple Today screen for the longest time but mostly because of the availability of the d-pad on previous models I owned. With the TP2 the Today screen isnt very finger friendly. In fact the whole WM interface isn't finger friendly at all. The OS was built with the stylus in mind. I've kinda managed to bring the interface to an acceptable level mostly due to SPB Mobile Shell. But yea... I'd have prefered something like Today screen but a lot friendlier to the touch.

Wm6 Vs Wm5

Hi All,
I see a lot of people testing this and that, and everyday we seem to have 10000 new roms with extra functionalities, which is a great thing, but makes a little bit skeptical.
I have installed a wm6 rom some time ago, so far no bigger problems with it, the question that i want to make and i am sure that someone has already thought of this, is it really worth to upgrade to wm6?
Is wm6 more stable that wm5?
Is wm6 faster than wm5?
Is the software so much better?
What is your opinion guys?
Thanks!!
GO WM6.
998 solved bugs as said by Microsoft. This should be the first reason.
After that you have new graphics, powerful outlook which supports attachments and html messages and last but not last you can use touch flo or the hew htc home plug
998 solved bugs and 1000 introduced bugs?
imho, no it's not really worth upgrading
no it's not more stable
it might be slightly faster, but i can't tell
software aren't better, in fact, using same software may induce bugs that you don't see with WM5...
Touch flo don't work well with trinity
htc home plug is good. Does look really cool I have to say, and is probably the only reason why I'm still using WM6...
Once again, I stress that these are purely my experience, I've really only tried each WM6 rom for a week before it piss me off too much that i have to go back to WM5...
Well maybe I need a different rom for Wm6 ... I cant use no internet application unless im connected to my computer . Well some work thru wifi but others dead . And even the instant messengers dont work. I installed tmobiles oz and it only works if im plugged into my machine via activesync .. Im looking for a differnt rom and then ill update you folks . Oh the rom im using ... XDA Mobile 6.0.0
This is the reason why i question this upgrade.
I know its a super job all the cookers have done so far, but the overall use of the wm6 is still a little bit overrated.
I see a lot of people missing this and that, and while its true that wm6 fixed some bugs, its also true that it introduced some, while other are due to our rom cooking attempts.
to be honest i have not seen anything so must have for wm6, better office is a nice thing, but i have seen it already somewhere the install cabs, so one point down.
Touch flo? I have seen better implementations when this iPhone crazy mania was around. and we only had wm5 at the time.

WM6 is only worth it if you have already upgraded (as in, its not worth downgrading to WM5 when you have already made the jump) but I agree with others that WM6 is not really worth upgrading to. A lot of programs dont work properly and they wont for many months as the small software companies (eg. spb) catch up.
WM6 removes the NEW button from the SMS page, and replaces it with DELETE of all things. This sad reality is a metaphor for other idiotic shortcomings which make all the barely noticeable "graphical upgrades" in WM6 even weaker in comparison.
This is really the point of this discussion, its not a question of it looks nicer or has more or less buttons, the real question is if it really brings added bonus to the overall experience.
I am using WM6 for 3 months already, and to be honest, i don't see any real added value in the user experience. I feel that what we really need is some kind of changed ui that makes it all easier for the user to work with the mobile.
TouchFlo has some nice concepts, iPhone also, but i think that something even better can be done by the companies, and wm6 does not do much to help us in this direction.
Do you guys agree or disagree with me?

All true, the thing is if the button would have been a "delete" button in WM5 and previous versions this would have not been a problem.
I think it is great to have new buttons on places you would not expect them, it keeps us from transforming into brainless zombies.
No seriously, I agree, it's annoying. But hey, it's the way it is, and after deleting some sms, I'm getting used to/by it.
Furthermore, I like HTC WM6 (Dopod Australian) with the standard Windows Live today plugin. That alone would be a reason for me to upgrade.

I have tried it, and it even works correctly, however its not a good implementation of a good gui. And we both know its slow and buggy, and it does not work 100% as it should.
I like the way the buttons are shown in Spb Mobile Shell, but i still think that the main tools are not so user friendly and are too much pen dependent.
P.S. No harm done with the caps ;-)

Samsung Ominia

Has anyone made a ROM using the Samsung Ominia User Interface? i saw it on youtube the other day and it looks cool i was just wondering if anyone can make it.
I could. The Omnia interface is nice, but its not all that better than the M2D imo.

ofcoursee NOTHIN is better then ur ROM (1.27 BELL) that i m running ryte now NO doubt about that.
but its nice to have different things you know to see little change in our HTC TOUCH thats what i think. you dont have to do it just for me. beacause i do understand it takes countless amount of hours and hard work.
soo if more people agree and if they want it too, then ill kindly request you too make it.
I KNOW tht if ur gonna make it then it will be the BEST thing out there!!
thanxx alott bro
im sorry but that would be wicked !!!!!! the FEWedgets plugin was cool for a minute but boring, to limited.. and not tha best quality.. I aswell wouldn't ask for tha amount of work to be put in.. but 4real that would be pretty sick! imo
yea ehh thats what i thought
no doubt it takes lots of hard work but if we have more people wanting this
then we can kindly request NFSFAN to make one for us.
so can everyone who wants this ROM just post a reply saying "yea this would be nice or yes u want want this ROM.
yea this would be nice!
Hey all,
One of the guys I work with actually has one of these phones and I played around with it for a couple hours the other day, and IMHO the interface kinda sucks LOL
While the wow and cool factor lasted maybe 10 minutes or so the actual usability and functionality of the phone with added configs and settings didnt really do alot to the form and feel of the phone compared to anything custom on a WinMO device, Android (referring to the Vogue port of Android) or even the IPhone
Really, the adding and removal of the widgets are nice, but its through 5 hoops to get to any real apps or make any useful activity of the phone plus with the smallish screen on a vogue device the widgets would dominate the available area and with like the Omnia start apps without the intention of wanting them opened when trying to open something else.
Again, not against it, but seriously I dont see anything all that useful other than a few minutes of wowability until the omnia gui is unchecked and tf2d or standard WinMO UI would be re-enabled by the user - of course to each their own and if the desire is there enough someone will build it although I would personally love to see more progress into the area of WinMO 6.5 or 7 than the Omnias interface or even more stability and speed being developed and worked on for the existing 6.1 WinMO/Custom ROM that currently exist

I'm with him ^^^. The gui doesn't really appeal to me, but like I said, depending on the factor of people wanting this, I may consider making a ROM using it. When a reliable and real build of WM6.5 comes out, I will port it to the Vogue.
lol yea I kinda agree, still would be cool, just to say tho.. any possibilty geting a omina style on screen mouse cursor ? its cool in skyfire, but if possible to port that to be able to use thru out menues etc on a htc would be sick!
just a thought
I would also like this. It reminds me of the Android, with the removable widgets. It's nice to have a change every once in awhile!
Not gonna lie I would like to see this a lot
I would like it I'm actually thinking of getting one when my phone is up for renewal or a blackberry storm....just wish there was something new and exciting coming out just seem like we have maxed out the vogue. And android seems like a pain in the ass to get going from reading the thread to many damn steps and buttons that do the opposite of what they were intended to do?!??!
+1 on the boring UI. It would be cool, but the avail widgets are quite useless and can't be used with other plugins. One thing I found odd was that you can't lock the widgets into place, so everytime you click, they move.
I just think the mouse feature would be really cool to have.
Mouse
Hey, those of you wanting the mouse feature, you might wanna try a program called VirtuaMouse One-Hand. I know it's probably not the exact same but it's somewhat the same concept.

Rhodium vs Hero

Guys and gals,
Being a WM user since probably 5-6 years, i am having a "faith crisis" :-(
I am a proud owner of TP2 running wm6.5, and am loving all the development, hacking and customisability you get with WM (thanks to this great community obviously).
Problem is i am being more and more drawn to android OS, and its rapid development, applications, net integration etc.
was wondering if there's anyone out there with rhodium having the same doubts??
Rhodium is bloody good piece of hardware, and its a shame to let it go, but looking at Hero....
well, its tempting. cant have both :-(
Well, my single biggest reason for buying a TP2 was the keyboard, so....
ditto, Keyboard is the main reason.
Keyboard Keyboard keyboard... and more customization and hacking then any other Mobile OS.

Why not just run Andriod on your Rhodium..........................
Hero has no keyboard and can not run WinMo (Not without a great deal of Dev work anyway) Rhodium can run Android with very little work required and you could still run WinMo too.............
Hope that helps persuade your reasoning...........
Rhodium looks way better too
Cheers,
Beasty
Agree with beasty.
Rhodium has keyboard that for some (like me) is a must!
Also Android is a young and unmature OS, perhaps in the future can be an option but not for now.
Just my 2 cents,
The TP2 because of WM customization, flexability, business use, rom flashing, tweeks, etc......
ok well w eneed someone to get started on androiid for the tp2 n now doghnut has native cdma
iPhone is 100% toy, Android phones are 90% toy, WM phones are 50% toy. Some of us have to do real work sometimes, and we're not buying our phones for the fart noise apps.

I wonder how many are using that on WM though, I know it is available..........
You are correct though, WM is purely for business use as its main function.
Android is coming up fast but still needs a lot of work to convince me to be my main PDA OS.
IPhone, so far behind, the kids can keep it.

According to the Engadget review of Hero, the Sense UI is quite sluggish. So all that glitters is not gold.

Is it just me, or does winmo6.5 look better than "windows phone 7 series"?

To me, personally, the newest winmo doesnt look that amazing. 6.5 with touch flo 3D (Or htc sense, whatever), looks much nicer. Microsoft wont let you skin 7, and you are very limited to certian hardware. I'm getting a HD2, and if a update comes out for winmo7, im sticking with "classic". Time to change my signature!
I completely disagree but to each his own.
When you get to use it in person your opinion will change. Sense is nice though.
I like Touch Flo and I'm using it right now on my Touch Pro2 but I'm looking forward to WP7.
WP7S looks far more advanced, clean and has a much better UI Experience than the super laggy, buggy WM 6.5 can ever have!

It's just you.
It depends on your own preference. I personally prefer practicality over ascetics! its more about using the phone than having it as a status symbol for me! Im glad they are moving away from resistive screens and stylus navigation and 6.5.3 is pretty good for that now anyway.
I still think the specs they require will not stop it being ported onto current devices.
I'm sure it's not just you, but that's because WP7 design principles are a bit ahead of time on devices - everyone's used to faux 3D and "cute icons". The concept used in WP7 is prominent on the web - you have plenty of "chromeless UI" there, where "content is the interface". If you think a little, the Web is a really amazing thing from the usability perspective, in most cases you can go to an unfamiliar web site and without any training or preparation maze your way through a very complex underlying structure to get where you want to be. That's what MS is trying to do here as well - you don't have icons and buttons; text and images are the buttons. The visual "hints" like stuff on the side and text "not fitting" the screen are quite natural indicators of showing that there's something else, and are used instead of a "More" or "Advanced" buttons which, in these paradigm, are just unneeded clutter, or UI garbage. So there's a lot of practicality behind this concept, in fact. Whether the implementation will be practical and/or will get widespread adoption remains to be seen, of course.
This appear to me like following conversations might have happened at MS hardquarters:
Dev: Hey I can't get the 3D effects running smooth. But with more money I can do it!
Chief: No money. Screw this 3D things. Just write some plain text instead.
Dev: Oh! We also have problems with multitasking. Already the first screens after booting up are so slow. I need more money and I can fix it!
Chief: No money. Just disable multitasking!
From what I have seen of Windows Mobile 7, I'm not exactly chomping at the bit for it. I will try it out when it's released on here but I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up going back to 6.5.5.
I choose winmo 6.5.3
I think it's not you. I, for one, also think that WP7 is a "failure". It's totally not that impressive as the iPhone OS in the beginning and Android currently. With this WP7, they got themselves disqualified for the Mobile OS race!
i completely agree, i perfer bog standard winmo 6.5 with htc home and spb pocket plus installed on my today screen, i dont bother with touch flow or any other ui's i know how to use my phone its functional practacal and an amazing bit of kit, i dont care if it looks pretty or is in 3d, but its nice to know i have the hardware if i need it , i cant see me getting a win7 series os on my phone untill someone on here has hacked it to death and got it a bit more FUN,
I prefer the stock looking WM6.1 (yes, I'm using WM6.5 without the start menu, it sux) on the new builds if I hit the Start button it makes me feel like I have a Nokia crap in my hands.... f*** the globalization

[Q] Life after 6.5?

There appear to be a number of folk here who feel that WP7 is a step backward from WM6.5 in terms of feature set, customisability, hackability etc. What then would people propose as an alternative once WM6.5 is finally dead and buried, Android? Iphone? Symbian/ Maemo? or will you give WP7 a chance?

So much fight here about it.....
Well I'm still not decided.
But I know I want to give WP7 a go.
Looks great and I would be happy to have clean, unified UI.
Limitations which are apparent on WP7 make it unusable at this point.
Android is the most complete but I just really don't like it's interface...
Probably staying with 6.5 for some time....
i personally cant be bothered to hack my my phone and look for custom ROM to flash. surely people only do this if they are not happy with their phone.if you dont like the OS. dont get it. its the reason why im not getting android, or an iphone. all phones have great features missing from them. and wp7 is only in its first phase improvement like copy and paste will come. ive only got 1 complaint, and that is that i cannot use it as a flash drive but then again, if i did that, would it slow down to a crawl??? wp7 is dead easy, i dont have time to muck around like i used to with wm6.5 on my touch diamond 2. i want it all, and i want it all now. so im sticking with wp7.

Same thoughts here. Was cooking my own 6.5roms to get a slim and working OS but sinceI got my HD7, I've stop cooking totally because WP7 is very fast and stable for me. Sure there are areas I'm not happy with, but at least, I have more time to live my life now since I stopped cooking roms.
I'm not here to convince anyone to go WP7, each OS has it's pros and cons, and each of us are completely different and see things and have different needs, so we go for different phones, something that works for us.

LOL , you just made a lot of people angry by stopping with cooking rom's .
I think I will stick with wm 6.5 for awhile. I use it as a Mass storage device & tether with it often. I also am really used to using smart dialing which I can't understand why it wasn't added to WP7. I'll wait to a few months after WP7 lands on Sprint to see what the updates have brought & what hackers have opened. If more functionality is available on WP7 I'll get it, if not I'll go with Android when I want to upgrade because of hardware
shouldn't this be in the winmo section???

I'm going to wait for the 2nd generation of WP7 phones and OS (or at least an OS update or two). I was ready to get a focus, then I realized I'd be losing some features I enjoy on my TP2 (multitasking, tethering, call manager) just to gain a newer OS.
I also want premium hardware and design which the first generation doesn't seem to offer. DVP comes close though.
i switched to android, never looked back

There should be another choice "I would celebrate with Dom Perignon!" Please put the 6.5 out of it's misery already!
One thing is sure for me, I will not be joinging the iPhone family.
Possibly Maemo or Androd. Depends what kiind of devices will be out by then.
W7 only if there has been lots of needed updates and/or hacks/roms and such.
Any poll in a specific device forum will always have support for that device.

Life after WM6.5 to which he refers is precisely WP7. then the correct section!
A little off-topic, but correct!
I found that I was having to flash new ROMs etc to my 6.5 because the UI and features available to a standard WinMo was rubbish. I never liked the 6.5 OS much, I just liked the ability to customise and look deeper into the phone
I am now on WP7 and would never look back on 6.5.
At the moment I don't see I have much choice - Android here I come I think.
The gains in slick simple UI are insufficient in my case to outweigh the loss of functionality vs 6.5.
Many of the other advantages (gaming for example) are of no interest to me on my phone (I am not the target market).
I will stick with 6.5 until at least Phone Alarm is released for Android, then it will become viable for me. Hopefully this will be early 2011.

 My premium phone standards were set by my SE X1, not the TP2. I would really love to see a WP7 version of the X1. Hopefully the X7 will deliver. But knowing SE, it won't be released until next November.

Ditto. X1 was excellent.
Currently on X2 which is actually better in many regards.
Anyway, I just hope SE will make it around Feb/March.
So it will catch upgrades which are for me necessary.
And until core apps I use on WM 6.5 will be functional/supported
I can just wait for some time....
I find it hard to believe anyone speaks of the death of WinMo in the present tense. It died for me like 2 1/2 years ago and since then the iPhone has taken over the smartphone market, Android has taken over the spot WM6.5 used to occupy and Microsoft has done practically nothing until very recently. I bought a Focus and I like it, it's a magnitude nicer and easier to use than my old Fuze with WM6.5 and while it's lacking a lot of the functionality, that will come with time and, in the meantime, I don't need to take out my reading glasses and itty bitty cramp inducing stylus to use it. The Fuze is still sitting on my desk, unused, with a noticable layer of dust on it. And there it will sit until I finally tire of looking at it and throw it away. And good riddance!
I cannot speak for anyone but for me, I have been windows mobile user ever since palm treo with windows on it. Before making switch to WP7, my device was Tilt2 and I tweaked the crap out of it putting custom roms and radio to fit my taste. Although having the capability was great but my user experience was not all that great. Something was always wrong and the hardware and software wasn't working correctly, so I was constantly tweaking and tell you the truth I got tired.
I was ready to jump ship to Android with Samsung Captivate but as soon as the WP7 was arriving I decided to wait. Boy I am glad that I did, I am happy with my samsung focus. Although it's missing some functions now but I am sure it's on it's way, the stability and the fact that it just works and I do not have to tweak anything makes my life a lot easier. Could not be more happy with OS. At least so far.
My wife has iphone and looked at android and both are not really appealing to me. Android is not all that great even if with all the customization and tweaking.
