Ok I had a question before deciding on which Touch Pro 2 to get. This question is mainly toward T-Mobile users but I''m sure others will be able to answer this as well...
I was looking at the Touch Pro 2 and since I am on T-mobile I had a few questions. Tried digging aroudn but couldn't find it so if it has already been asked/answered, if you could link me that'd be great.... but...
1) Can any other variation of the Touch Pro 2 be able to use T-Mobiles 3G band. I've heard yes, and no so I was looking for clarification.
2) If I were to get a Touch Pro 2 from T-Mobile will they make me have data? (similar to the G1). AND if I don't get it and decide to just keep my T-Zones, will it work or would they force me off.
I don't browse that often but I like to keep my T-zones as I tether it to my other cheapo 3G phone for use when ever I need it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
1. Nope. All the other version of the TP2 do not have the 1700/2100 band needed to run on T-Mobile's 3G.
2. Not sure about that, might want to ask them.
1) I'm not 100% sure but I think it's no.
2) Yes, TMo requires a data plan with this phone. If you buy it from another source you should be able to put your SIM card in and use without data or with an existing cheap data plan. There is always the potential that TMo could look at the MEID and realize what you are doing and force the PDA data plan.
Another possibility is to look at the phone at Neweg.com. I noticed that it was for sale with new contracts and it appeared that Newegg was not requiring the data plan at purchase. I don't know if that has changed or if TMo could pull a "gotcha" after you have already bought it.

The $24.95 data plan is the minimum required data plan for the TP2. This is clearly stated on the website; also if you call CS, like I did to but mine, they'll state it too.

I recently had asked what would happen if I were to just put my sim in "my friends touch pro 2" and they said I would be able to use it. I also asked if my data plan would change they said they wouldn't change anything, but instead render that part of the phone unusable until the right plan was added on. So technically I would be able to use the phone and possibly browse the web, but if the browsing the web was an issue, it would stop working and the only way to fix it would be to change my data plan. So so far, so good...

wow i love how they lie to you to try to get you to upgrade your data plan
If you got the unbranded tp2, you might be able to get away with the $5.99 tzones. I would be very surprised if they block data with the tmo tp2 if using the $5.99 or $10.00 data plan. When i went from the g1 to the dash, it asked me to switch data plans and would not allow data. When i went back to the g1, it did it again. Worked for about an hour until i got the "Upgrade subscription" page.
When I first got the phone, the store rep let me keep my 5.99 TZones for a while, I just had to change from epc.tmobile.com to wap.voicestream.com in my settings. Then, my data plan automatically changed to the 24.99 service, in which I called a rep and had them change it back, since I said I don't really do that much web browsing hehe.

I need to know if I get a Touch Pro 2 will it automatically change me to the smartphone data plan?? or will i still be able to use t-zones... I search the forum and there was no clear answer to the question. I currently have a Touch Pro One, and I use t-zones.
Any clarity to the answer will be much appreciated... I'd rather switch carriers than pay the higher amount.

I have purchased a TP2 and have had it for about 1 month (with a billing cycle)... I still have T-zones, and I have not needed to upgrade, nor has T-mobile changed my plan. T-zones work at 3G speeds! $5.99 has never been so well spent.
i bought my tp2 from ebay for that reason, i don't have tzones but i do have unlimted data for 19.99 that they don't offer no more and tmobile wants you to buy a new plan that cost 25.99 or 35.99 with text messages. i didn't want that its to much money. but i now have had my tp2 for almost a month and they didn't switch nothing bc i never upgraded with them, and never renewed my contract. also i now get 3g speed.
hope that help your decesion. TP2 is awesome

T-Mobile won't switch you automatically and you still can use T-Zones plan with the TP2.
i just got a new touch pro 2 from my friend 4 days ago and I have tzones $5.99 plan and it is working just fine with 3G.
When the phone first came out there was mass confusion within TMobile over whether a new plan was *required*. But it turned out the new plan wasn't required (and in fact not even any tweaks needed, full 3G right out of the box), but the staff did try to encourage users to change. I had TZones and was able to buy online at the TMobile site without it even asking about a plan upgrade (I took this route to avoid any problems with uninformed staff as I'd been in a branch where they wouldn't sell it without the upgrade, and had had conflicting answers from reps on the phone). A couple of days ago I was talking to the TMo rep on another matter, and he tried to get me to upgrade. He was surprised that TZones was getting me full internet. I said no thanks, and he somewhat reluctantly let it go.
I've heard of people getting full internet from just T-Zones. How exactly does that work cuz it's got me curious now.
t-zones will work with the TP2 and if you happen to have canceled your t-zones plan like me because the person at t-mobile told you it would not work anymore then you can use the 9.99 t-web plan but just make sure in connections you change the APN to Internet2.voicestream.com
TP2 SIM swap question
Hey,
I'm getting a TP2 for my wife with a required data plan at a discount. since I want the phone, I'm going to put my SIM card into it and use it with my T-zones and unltd loyalty plan, then give her a motophone and cancel the data plan. Will they require me to ditch my T-zones and pick up a new data plan or will that scenario only apply to her SIM card?
Thanks,
OZ
I originally had the T-Mobile Wing with T-zones working perfectly, but when the TP2 came out, I purchased it from the T-Mobile store (big mistake). I told them that I didn't use the internet at all and I wanted to keep my T-zones. Unfortunately, they told me that I had to get a smartphone plan at $25/mo and that I could not keep the T-zones intact. It sucks really hard because my friend still has his T-zones for his Dash and when I plugged his SIM card into my phone and my G1, everything worked through T-zones. Plus he got 3G speeds to boot!
If I did the WinMo promotion through T-Mobile, I could have just added another line on my family plan and gotten the phone for $150, keep it for 2 weeks, then cancel the line and pay the $200 ETF and whatever the prorated charges for the extra line would come out to be. I'd still have T-zones on my line, no contract extension, and a TP2 to boot. Either way, I would have ended up paying $400 w/tax for the phone.
On a side note, I called Customer Service and told them that the data charge was going to make my bill a little more expensive than what I could afford and asked them if I could return the phone and get T-zones back. The rep didn't address the return issue and T-zones, but instead offered to switch my $19.99 unlimited family texting plan to the old $9.99 unlimited family texting plan that was available a few years back.
Saving $10/mo is really nice, but I'd rather save another $20. Going to try the web chat with T-Mobile today and use the TZUNL599 code. I saw it HERE and I'm hoping it will work. Wish me luck!

There are two different tzones. One is an old real unlimited internet plan that is grandfathered for some but for others has been replaced by web2go, a more expensive more limited option. The other is what they called their free prepaid data for a while -- that one limits you to a few sites + their store where you can purchase wallpaper and ringtones.
There was for a couple of years a workaround that opened up full internet on the prepaid free tzones, but AFAIK, TMo has completely shut those workarounds down. I've actually been meaning to try it out to make sure, but haven't gotten around to it.
I have a $9.99 web plan service with t-mobile. I just got a t-mobile touch pro 2 from ebay. When I try to browse the web, it shows on the phone plan upselling is needed. I called t-mobile, they told me in order to use web with touch pro 2, I need to sign up for $30 data plan instead. Is there any way the touch pro 2 can use the $9.99 plan?
Hmm, that strange??? I used my HTC Touch Pro 2 (Unlocked) with my tzones (5.99) and I can surf the web without any problem.

Its probably because of the fact that you purchased a T-Mobile Touch Pro2. With that, they can identify exactly the type of phone you have using the phone's IMEI (since its their phone after all) and force the $30 data plan on you.
So unless you go for an unlocked non-T-Mobile Touch Pro2, there probably isn't a way around the $30 data plan requirement.
You could always try and argue with customer service over the phone, and threaten to cancel service, but I don't know if that'll do much.

Ok, I have a grandfathered T-zones plan on my newly acquired T-mobile branded TP2 and the internet works juuuust dandy. 3G and all.
BUT...I don't get picture messages even though I have the messaging pack. Talked to a csr and he kindly told me its because I have the cheapo grandfathered plan. Some bs about system upgrade or something. I took it as T-mobile's way of kinda sticking it to me.
Anyhoo, are there any fixes to bring the MMS back? Like I said, I have the net, but no MMS. Sorry if this has been posted already.
False Alarm
Ok, I very well may be the only person who experienced this, but after sending a picture message, everything started working again. I even got one from hours ago that must have been in an attempt cycle.
I did absolutely nothing. Weird...
Anyhoo, I'm back in business.

easy... eBay
I'm a huge ebayer, but this is the way I did it. I doubt there's a more cost effective way to get the most complete phone out in my opinion.
Just call the T-Mobile business line and add a line for $9.99. Then tell them you want to take advantage of the "windows mobile" promotion. Go to www.wmdeals.com for all the details, but basically you get a free TP2 shipped free and they throw in free bluetooth or car charger with mine. I think activation was waived as well.
But don't add any services to your new line! Then when your phone comes, just switch your SIM card with your old plan and services to your new TP2. DO NOT activate your new line. Far as I can tell, they won't charge you for a new line till you activate. I'll check my paper bill to be sure, but online, my account shows my 4 original lines instead of 5 lines.
I read on some other forum that if you cancel your new line within 14 days or something they charge you $40. I can eat that for a new TP2, but I don't think I was ever charged for the new line.
Plus, if you send in an old smartphone you get a 100 bucks. So you can skip Craiglist or those ebay seller fees.
I'll update if I get any crazy charges after the fact.
Hey guys,
I'm calling out all the Tmobile T-zone users ($2.99-$5.99/month).
I recently switched my ROM from the Cell Pro v9.5 to different ROMS running 6.5.3 or 6.5.5.
The first thing I noticed is that the internet speed went back down VERY slow compared to before. I was getting a max of about 170-200kb/sec prior to switching to new ROMS.
After I changed the ROM, my speed went back down to EDGE of around 30-50kb/sec.
I was wondering if any of you are having this problem or if T-mobile cut my speeds down. I was on my way to average about 5GB/month Data, lol.
Thanks!
p.s. What DATA settings are you guys using?
how did you get your touch pro2 to work with tzones? when I had mine I would get " my phone is not compatable with the data plan" even when I would use the proxy hack. I am dying to know how you got your touch pro to work with tzones

Darn, I hate getting the slow 30-60kb/sec speeds Just 3 days ago, I was up at 170-200kb/sec...
As for the TP2 working on T-zones, I usually just let the ROM set it up for me. I don't do anything special, but I know my wife's $10 dummy phone internet needs the internet2 URL for her TP2.
Try howardforums to check some of the settings they use, good luck!

how I got the tp2?
go to wmdeals.com call the 800# (t-mobile business) and mention the code
order the phone for free with no activation fee (2 year contract)
you can also opt for unlimited texts instead of $30 internet (only if your plan does not have a family text plan already).
it is best if you have a family plan and can add one line ($9.99).
Do so at the start of your monthly minutes so you don't pay taxes twice if you are going to cancel after 21 days.
call tmo after 21 days(after receiving the phone) and cancel the new line.
pay the $200 etf plus the prorated fees for the line + taxes+regulatory fee and keep the tp2.
Do you still have t-zones?
If so, pop the sim card with the t-zones and you are good to go.

The $5.99 plan is not for smartphones. You'll need the normal data plan for the TP2. It normally connects through internet2.voicestream.com or internet3.voicestream.com. wap.voicestream.com is used for MMS.
I'm getting the same subscription upgrade required message. I have been using the $5.99 data plan for about three years on my smartphone just fine until today. Like the OP, I tried all available APN settings to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions?

Look up one post. I just provided the answer. It doesn't matter how long you've been using it. T-Mobile is changing the data access policies. You can no longer connect to the Internet on your TP2 with the $5.99 plan. You need to either use a non-smartphone device, or upgrade your plan. There is no way around it.

I talked to T-Mobile Blackberry/PDA Support or Tier 2/3 to some others. Most of us remember about this time last year they doing something similar to what they did Tuesday. Talking to TMBS, earlier in the day they were killing T-Mobile Web aka Unlimited T-Zones to Smartphones. I talked to another guy this evening that said the same thing with one caveat...which I asked what about those of us who have grandfathered data plans?
He looked over our account codes...whatever that means and he made the observation that the instructions for our SIM cards were erased in regards to our data plan which he said he put the instructions back. I was on the horn with him at the same time our internet came back up through no editing of our network connections, so I have no idea what to think.
I don't know if what was done today was a prelude to the introduction of Windows Phone 7 devices starting next month. I'm told T-Mobile will introduce 3 Windows Phone 7 devices for the upcoming holiday season - HTC Mozart aka HD3/7...take your pick, a LG and Samsung variation. Assuming they don't toy with our internet plans as they currently are I have to believe it will be a repeat of the Touch Pro 2 and HD2 Leo. You buy the device retail you can stay on T-Mobile Web.
All that said, I couldn't tell you whether it's all script or the truth.

Well. T-zones is back up and running as of yesterday evening with my smartphone. Hopefully this was just a temporary outage.
Edge was working all through

Glad it is back. I have mine for more than 5yrs. But during this outage for last couple of days, I turned off 3G and it was working fine on Edge. Of course on 3G I was getting same subscription error.
So my T-Mobile account uses T-Zones for data, and it's only $5.99 a month unlimited on the grandfathered plan. I had an iPhone 4 unlocked to Tmo, and it worked great. I just bought a T-Mo Galaxy SII, and using the SIM in that phone gets me no data. Voice works great, but no data at all. When putting a different active SIM in the SII it gets data fine. And I'm using a brand new 4G SIM so I know that's not the issue.
The question is - how can I continue on my current plan and use the SII with T-zones for my data? Will a custom ROM work? Do they use EIN to determine if you need the Android data plan? I'm rooted but on stock right now. I really really want to keep my current data plan because it's unlimited and cheapo.
Anyone know the answer to this one? Thanks so much for any help you can provide.
They told me I had to upgrade from my 19.99 unlimted Internet plan to use 4G on my old HTC Sensation. I can only imagine what they woudl say if you inquired about the 5.99 plan on your SG2.
Contact 611 & please keep us posted on the outcome
It looks like you need to manually enter the APNs.

I had the same plan as you on my Nokia N82 and after upgrading to Samsung Vibrant, I found out there is no way to use tzones with android phones except Nexus one. Now I pay for the android data plan, hopefully you have better luck.

I've tried all the APNs out there for Tmo and none work. I'll call retentions tomorrow (I'm out of contract so they should take good care of me) and let you know what happens.
T-Zones is a grandfathered plan and it only works with phones that uses 2G, which are only the basic phones. The SGS2 requires the Android data plan/Smartphone data plan which if you call retention, they should offer you for 20$.

Yeah, but that'd be 2GB before throttle, correct? And 5GB for $30? Sucky.

Ask for the 5gb $20 plan.
Deebo took your bike too?

Yeah, if you've been a long time customer with T-Mobile, they should be able to offer you the 5GB 20$ plan.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I got. 5GB plan for $20 and $10 off each month for two years. It's basically $2 more a month than I was paying before, I can live with that. 2 year contract required.
Thanks for all the help!
on a side note, tzone won't work with phones that have tmobile logo on them because tmo scan the
imei #, a phone id.
it should work with phones that have international versions..check sensation, o3d ( make sure tmo version because they also have att version with same model p920)
The only Android phone I ever go to work on $5 and $10 unlimited internet was my HD2 which wasn't technically an Android phone . Was pretty pissed when I had to switch to the EM+ $20 5GB plan.
Any phone thats not branded tmobile will work. I would never get rid of that plan. If you get the galaxy s2 from telus it will work fine. For some reason the htc tmobile mytouch slide will work also just popped my sim in one and it's been working for over a month and other android phones on tmobile stop working right away. Data is data that android plan stuff from tmobile is a scam if they dont have your imei listed in there logs the phone will work.
Yep.... It's IMEI locked and not according to some fallacies that some people threw out there (only works with 2g/3g, older phones). It WILL work with new smartphones just not ones purchased from T-mobile. The European Sensation works with T-zones. The Telus SGS2 will work with T-Zones. The upcoming Galaxy Nexus will work with T-zones (if bought elsewhere BUT t-mobile) Do your own research before listening to other people's advice.
Never get rid of that plan. It's truly 100% unlimited and unthrottled. If you got rid of it because of people here, i feel sorry for you man. If I were you, I would return the phone, get the T-zone option back and purchase the Telus SGS2. It's more expensive but worth it in the long run ($15 savings every month). Alternatively, just wait for the penta-band GSM HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus from ATT, Sprint and directly from google.

The only set back with keeping the tzone plan and with the phones that would work on the plan are the download speed. With this phone, I can get 10mb easy, but with my N1, using tzone, the max I ever got was 3mb (average of around 1.6-2.0). If you get a unsubsidized phone for say $500, you'll need 2 years or so just to break even (assuming you get the tmobile version for $200. you can get it for way less now).
The only good thing about tzones are the real unlimited usuage, but not many ppl uses 5gb every month. I know cause I was using the N1.

Not sure about the speeds.. but i don't know enough/read enough to see if they put you on a different speed profile. They talked a lot of T-zones on Howardforums and that's where i picked up the IMEI restriction. Probably a lot more info there if people want to check it out.
But the N1 vs. the GSG2 radios are way different. Perhaps it's just the phone. A fair comparison would be the telus vs. t-mo version. But i doubt anyone has both to compare.
Up to the OP, depends on his/her usage and what they're willing to pay.
from my understanding as far as speeds are concern, sg2 and htc amaze are the only fist ones that have 42mb data chipset build in. most other ones are either 14.4 or 21mb chip.

Yep. I got the telus sgs2x.... amazing. The highest I ever got was only 10mbps though. But that might change with tmobile getting free crap from AT&T .
The T-Mobile SGS2 is definitely IMEI locked on the APNs, as i've learned the hard way. There is also a number of other limitations being imposed that i've only come across on this handset:
Tethering - Instead of stock Android tethering, there is a tethering manager app that checks for tethering subscriptions and prevents data on the phone from working while tethering. Easily frozen or removed with titanium backup to work.
Wifi Calling - claims to need a new sim card, but according to rep requires a newer data plan (currently on one of the legacy plans). my plan seems to work with the g2 and it's wifi calling app, however i haven't looked for a work around yet
There were some other things i noticed that were software enforced on the handset, but didn't make notes as I went along
@fg I was told by customer service that I don't need to change my data plan. I was told I can keep my 200mb data plan but I would need to go to tmobile store to pick up a new sim card for free to enable wifi calling.
