woke up today and tried checking the weather...couldnt get a connection. Then used opera and it said i needed a subscription upgrade. Is this the end of the 5.99 tzone? Im running the energy rom and had no problem until this morning. I really hope its a data/network hiccup and resume back to the way it was...soon!
I also tried using wap.voicestream.com and epc.tmobile.com with no luck.

The $5.99 plan is not for smartphones. You'll need the normal data plan for the TP2. It normally connects through internet2.voicestream.com or internet3.voicestream.com. wap.voicestream.com is used for MMS.
I'm getting the same subscription upgrade required message. I have been using the $5.99 data plan for about three years on my smartphone just fine until today. Like the OP, I tried all available APN settings to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions?

Look up one post. I just provided the answer. It doesn't matter how long you've been using it. T-Mobile is changing the data access policies. You can no longer connect to the Internet on your TP2 with the $5.99 plan. You need to either use a non-smartphone device, or upgrade your plan. There is no way around it.

You are lucky that is all you are receiving. Their normal mode is to charge $1.99 per megabyte of download.

I talked to T-Mobile Blackberry/PDA Support or Tier 2/3 to some others. Most of us remember about this time last year they doing something similar to what they did Tuesday. Talking to TMBS, earlier in the day they were killing T-Mobile Web aka Unlimited T-Zones to Smartphones. I talked to another guy this evening that said the same thing with one caveat...which I asked what about those of us who have grandfathered data plans?
He looked over our account codes...whatever that means and he made the observation that the instructions for our SIM cards were erased in regards to our data plan which he said he put the instructions back. I was on the horn with him at the same time our internet came back up through no editing of our network connections, so I have no idea what to think.
I don't know if what was done today was a prelude to the introduction of Windows Phone 7 devices starting next month. I'm told T-Mobile will introduce 3 Windows Phone 7 devices for the upcoming holiday season - HTC Mozart aka HD3/7...take your pick, a LG and Samsung variation. Assuming they don't toy with our internet plans as they currently are I have to believe it will be a repeat of the Touch Pro 2 and HD2 Leo. You buy the device retail you can stay on T-Mobile Web.
All that said, I couldn't tell you whether it's all script or the truth.

Glad it is back. I have mine for more than 5yrs. But during this outage for last couple of days, I turned off 3G and it was working fine on Edge. Of course on 3G I was getting same subscription error.

This is because tmobile is upgrading to the 3G plan.
That is actually incorrect. I have basically spent 5 hours talking with T-Mobile today, my company has several business lines with them and we are going to pull the plug in 24 hours unless they can come up with a definitive answer. Not only that but the 3500 monthly that we pay for these lines is a considerable necessary expense for us, that being said for the kind of money that we pay we expect to dial and be connected. We also expect that when our customers call us that they either speak to us or get voicemail. These customers are being dropped into dead air. T-Mobile has assured me that the problem has nothing to do with the 3g rollout but is a problem with the ultra low band. In this area. They have no date when they will fix this and should have at least contacted their business customers and informed them of the problem. They are basically a utility and if they cannot perform the services they say they provide then we have a problem. If however they had contacted us and said --hey for the next 30 days service may suck but then after this time frame we will have great connection and service we could deal with that. Just like if comcast had been open about shaping their traffic to control their network they wouldn't have me on the list for class action.
actually im in miami and i just started tinkering with the settings and by some stroke of god it worked.
did you fix your problem? were they able to do anything?
Today I upgraded my OS to Kavana 6.1 release. I love it.
I hardly ever (read: pretty much never) use the internet on the phone, but with the old T-Mobile official Dash 6.0 system (not hacked), I used to be able to access the internet and I thought I was charged on a per usage basis (but never really checked). In any case, I know for a fact I could access the internet on the old OS and I don't pay a monthly charge for it and it's not part of my plan.
So after I upgraded today, I could not get access to the internet at all. Checked the settings in the phone, checked T-Mobile's website, everything was set up right, but kept getting an error.
So I flashed back to the T-Mobile official release, and once again, I could access the internet. Checked all the settings, wrote them down, flashed back to Kavana. No internet.
Called T-Mobile. Didn't tell them I flashed to Kavana, but told them I suddenly didn't have internet access and asked for help. They said I don't have internet access because I don't pay for it, and T-Mobile does not have per data usage access, and there was nothing they could do unless I wanted to pay $20/month.
Can anyone tell me why this might have been and how I can get back the access I used to have?
As an aside....any way to get T-Zones working without paying for internet access (don't have time to search right now, yes I'm lazy, too!)
Thanks in advance for responses.
Jesus Gixxum, is it that time of the month for newbs. I've heard of this before at Howard Forums when I first got my dash. It's kinda an error on Tmobiles Part. It worked for some in the past like almost a tease when they first got there Dash's. The people eventually lost the free internet. It's like in Office Space when they fire Milton. They fixed the glitch at payroll. So, in either case be happy your weren't charged per kb. No there is no free way to get Internet even with Tzones. The cheaper way is the 5.99 Hack. (USE THE SEARCH) But personally if you want weather and newsfeeds etc. constantly updating. Pay the 19.99 or miss out.
Good luck in your decision or oh I don't have your Swingline stapler.
The $5.99 Tzones plus the proxy hack is the best option.

Yeah back in 07 when I first got my Dash for about 2 months I had free internet too. But that was when I was still using 5.0 Wow. 5.0. That was a year ago. Lol. It sucks how I meet people with the Dash that don't know what they can do with it. I knew this guy that had his phone for months and didn't know he had WiFi. We were on a college campus with free wifi everywhere.

It was more than 2 months. It was pretty much the entire time I've owned the phone (about 15 months), but like I said, I never use the net through my phone (I work in a car and it's got a mounted laptop with HSDPA internet connectivity). So it's not worth 5.99 to me, much less 19.99. I don't frequent the forums much since I switched to Dash from MPx220 so wasn't sure if this had been brought up before. Seems like since I can flash back to T-Mo 6.0 and have free access there should be some way to hack it, but that's not something I'm capable of myself. Just thought I'd throw it out there for discussion in case people weren't aware.
It's either like this: Keep the faster ROM and pay 6 bux a month or go back to the T-Mobile branded ROM for free net. Dude I know you can afford 6 dollars a month. If it's really that serious I'll send it to you... PSYCHE! But seriously you can easily scrape that up in 30 days. Either way you'll be stealing from the provider but I guess it wouldn't be as bad if you paid a little. I've never had the 20 dollar a month one but I think it's faster. That's what some people say.

Nope not true, its the same speed whether you use the T-Zones plan and do the proxy configuration or instead use the 20 dollar plan, you will not notice any difference in speed.
Well then what would be the point in paying the 20 dollars?
You're all kinda missing the point of this thread, not that your posts aren't appreciated. It's not how or whether to use the T-Zones hack, it's that the official T-Mobile 6.0 OS 1.22.531.4 allows free internet, and by reinstalling that OS I get it back. Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on why that is, and perhaps figure out how to get it to work with 6.1. I suspect it DID have something to do with T-Zones, as I could access T-Zones to check my minutes, etc., with the old system, but not with 6.1.
I don't care enough about internet on the phone to pay for it, but it was nice to know that it was there and available in an emergency just in case....
BTW, I'm in Southern California.
You were not getting FREE internet. You were geing charge per KB. T-Mobile has a page showing the configuration needed to get MMS and internet to work. jdoggraz has a link to the page in his sig.

Tried them, don't work. T-Mobile says they don't have a per KB charge for data.
Don't know how or why, but I am on flexpay, had internet for the first 3 months (the full 19.99 one) only for the rebate, cancelled it as I don't use it that much. They don't charge me anymore and it still works. Going on my 4th full month of all internet working without being charged for it, I called them multiple times to make sure I wasn't being charged and it wasn't activated and they insisted I must have been on a free wi-fi signal. Despite me knowing how to turn wifi on and off, and being in the dead center of a call center that blocks wifi and has no residences or other businesses within 4-500 meters...
I'm also on my 2nd rom, was on WM6 from here, think it was the HTC one, now using one of Kavanas, just using the regular settings. I really think it's a glitch in their billing/provisioning system.
Ok I had a question before deciding on which Touch Pro 2 to get. This question is mainly toward T-Mobile users but I''m sure others will be able to answer this as well...
I was looking at the Touch Pro 2 and since I am on T-mobile I had a few questions. Tried digging aroudn but couldn't find it so if it has already been asked/answered, if you could link me that'd be great.... but...
1) Can any other variation of the Touch Pro 2 be able to use T-Mobiles 3G band. I've heard yes, and no so I was looking for clarification.
2) If I were to get a Touch Pro 2 from T-Mobile will they make me have data? (similar to the G1). AND if I don't get it and decide to just keep my T-Zones, will it work or would they force me off.
I don't browse that often but I like to keep my T-zones as I tether it to my other cheapo 3G phone for use when ever I need it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
1. Nope. All the other version of the TP2 do not have the 1700/2100 band needed to run on T-Mobile's 3G.
2. Not sure about that, might want to ask them.
1) I'm not 100% sure but I think it's no.
2) Yes, TMo requires a data plan with this phone. If you buy it from another source you should be able to put your SIM card in and use without data or with an existing cheap data plan. There is always the potential that TMo could look at the MEID and realize what you are doing and force the PDA data plan.
Another possibility is to look at the phone at Neweg.com. I noticed that it was for sale with new contracts and it appeared that Newegg was not requiring the data plan at purchase. I don't know if that has changed or if TMo could pull a "gotcha" after you have already bought it.

The $24.95 data plan is the minimum required data plan for the TP2. This is clearly stated on the website; also if you call CS, like I did to but mine, they'll state it too.

I recently had asked what would happen if I were to just put my sim in "my friends touch pro 2" and they said I would be able to use it. I also asked if my data plan would change they said they wouldn't change anything, but instead render that part of the phone unusable until the right plan was added on. So technically I would be able to use the phone and possibly browse the web, but if the browsing the web was an issue, it would stop working and the only way to fix it would be to change my data plan. So so far, so good...

wow i love how they lie to you to try to get you to upgrade your data plan
If you got the unbranded tp2, you might be able to get away with the $5.99 tzones. I would be very surprised if they block data with the tmo tp2 if using the $5.99 or $10.00 data plan. When i went from the g1 to the dash, it asked me to switch data plans and would not allow data. When i went back to the g1, it did it again. Worked for about an hour until i got the "Upgrade subscription" page.
When I first got the phone, the store rep let me keep my 5.99 TZones for a while, I just had to change from epc.tmobile.com to wap.voicestream.com in my settings. Then, my data plan automatically changed to the 24.99 service, in which I called a rep and had them change it back, since I said I don't really do that much web browsing hehe.

Its probably because of the fact that you purchased a T-Mobile Touch Pro2. With that, they can identify exactly the type of phone you have using the phone's IMEI (since its their phone after all) and force the $30 data plan on you.
So unless you go for an unlocked non-T-Mobile Touch Pro2, there probably isn't a way around the $30 data plan requirement.
You could always try and argue with customer service over the phone, and threaten to cancel service, but I don't know if that'll do much.

Ok, I have a grandfathered T-zones plan on my newly acquired T-mobile branded TP2 and the internet works juuuust dandy. 3G and all.
BUT...I don't get picture messages even though I have the messaging pack. Talked to a csr and he kindly told me its because I have the cheapo grandfathered plan. Some bs about system upgrade or something. I took it as T-mobile's way of kinda sticking it to me.

easy... eBay
I'm a huge ebayer, but this is the way I did it. I doubt there's a more cost effective way to get the most complete phone out in my opinion.
Just call the T-Mobile business line and add a line for $9.99. Then tell them you want to take advantage of the "windows mobile" promotion. Go to www.wmdeals.com for all the details, but basically you get a free TP2 shipped free and they throw in free bluetooth or car charger with mine. I think activation was waived as well.
But don't add any services to your new line! Then when your phone comes, just switch your SIM card with your old plan and services to your new TP2. DO NOT activate your new line. Far as I can tell, they won't charge you for a new line till you activate. I'll check my paper bill to be sure, but online, my account shows my 4 original lines instead of 5 lines.
I read on some other forum that if you cancel your new line within 14 days or something they charge you $40. I can eat that for a new TP2, but I don't think I was ever charged for the new line.
Plus, if you send in an old smartphone you get a 100 bucks. So you can skip Craiglist or those ebay seller fees.
I'll update if I get any crazy charges after the fact.

this last few weeks i bought an unsubsidized HTC HD7 from tmobile and got full 3G data without any problems. i returned the HTC HD7 last week and in turn got another unsubsidized Tmobile G2. the first day i was able to get on the web fine, however the 2nd day i was not able to get any data services to work on it; only wifi worked.
popped my sim back into my nexus one and got my usual 2mbs speeds and access to android market. put it back in G2, no internet and getting tzones unavailable upsell page. just mentioning service is down.
anyone else having problems specifically w/their G2 on Tzones? all of my other non tmobile devices work fine. are they IMEI blocking our devices??
thanks all!
btw, i am rooted and also am now running the modaco custom rom
have u tried changing the apns in the connection settings page?

apns
yup, tried the usual suspects. internet2.voicestream.com, internet3.voicestream.com, wap.voicestream.com.
same results, but again ONLY on my G2. nexus one and iPhone are fine. ??
tmobile knows you have a g2 based on the IMEI, they will force you to pay for a android data plan.
You have no way around it with a tmobile android device. The best you are going to get is the $20 preferred android plan.
thats what i was thinking. i wonder if i bought one off of ebay would it matter? if not, i'm prob going to return it since i still get full 3G on my nexus one and tethering for the $5.99 /mo
best bet probably to stick with nexus
The HD7 didn't have an issue with the data plan?
Did you switch the phone listed on your account? also you could try spoofing the user agent on the browser...

Yeah, only the android phones have this issue. Switching the phone model listed on my account remedied that

You're using a g2 with a tzone or $10 data plan?

Unforntuately it was removed a stupid rep removed it after being grandfathered in. but... I had it working on my MTS. I would get the same error about switching plans on browser and I would change my pphone model and it would disappear. i'm currently on a $20 data plan w/ messaging ($5 bucks cheaper/got it after *****ing about the stupid rep removing my old data plan without permission) for android but it might be worth to try switching models. it worked for me 4 months ago...
Yes, the HTC HD7 got full 3G data on tzones ($5.99/mo) w/o any problems. seems like android phones sold by tmobile won't work and in turn they upsell you an 'android' data plan when i know for a fact that tzones works just fine w/android (ie my nexus one purchased unlocked from google).
i tried changing my phone type in my account to unlisted but had no luck. my nexus one and iphone 3gs were fine w/the epc.tmobile.com apn and have not had any issues. imo it seems like imei blocking since they have the full database of imeis for their own G2s where my nexus one was direct from google and iphone was at&t and not compatible 3G.
i probably should have set my phone type to unlisted and let it stay as that for a day but figured it prob wouldn't work anyways and i wanted to return phone in the 14day timeframe. loved the phone and may get one online and see if that matters (not tied to my line, imei wise and prev account may have had proper plan so option is turned on for device; speculating on last bit).
any other T-Zones success / fail stories w/the G2??
i just ended up returning my G2.
I tried it when the G1 came out. I used an iphone forever and didn't wanna upgrade from the tzones hack lol. in the end, tmobile has the cheapest rates possible. I had to leave the tzones behind after 4 years of it never failing, due to android

They DO have a list of IMEI's that they go by.
No matter where you get your G2 from, if you don't have a android plan you will get the update message and have to get a android plan. Non tmobile android phones and all windows mobile smartphones have always worked with the tzones plan, for some reason tmobile doesn't care enough about WM to enforce it, and they really can't imei filter on non tmobile android devices. This has been discussed to death over the years on howardforums.

makes sense w/imeis. just wanted to confirm that others had similar experience. glad i got my unlocked nexus one from google
that phone sure has held its own this whole year! G2 is nice though. if i could have used on my tzones i would have kept it too! (had it rooted, custom modaco rom on it and all)
Just pay stop been cheap. Lol

hehe, with the way i go through unlocked phones, i have to be cheap somewhere. ended up with a Galaxy Tab instead and using the Nexus One as main phone.
20 some days after this
same thing seems to be happening to me, i have been using a Htc touch pro 2 for about 1 YEAR, i got initially a "Pay By the Month" plan in early 2010, it was:
- $40 Even More Plus™ 500 Talk with FlexPay®
- $10 Unlimited Web for Phones with FlexPay
It wouldnt work with my touch pro 2, but then i discovered that you can put an APN (internet2.voicestream.com) to get it working, i did that and set that i was using a Motorola razr in the my tmobile account, and it did work, then i stop paying the monthly charge to see if i would still have the internet working, and surpisingly it kept working, so for a whole year i used the internet.. in the month of december i noticed that my internet speed got faster all the suden, from downloading at 26 kbps to 120 kbps so i thought, wow this is so cool, and decided to buy the G2, they just delivered to my house yesterday ( Jan 21 2011 ) i got it because they had a promotion of get a 2 year contract with tmobile and get g2 for free ( promotion that only lasted 2-3 days), and so as soon as it arrived i put my sim card of the touch pro 2 to the G2, did set the apn, it worked, but after 3-4 hours, it stopped working, it shows "Subscription Upsell Required" but if i put the sim card back to the Touch pro 2 the internet works.
i have not done anything as far as Rooting Flashing Unlcoking to my G2, but as you guys were saying it may have to do with the IMEI :/
does anybody have a solution?

Its the imei. They trace it to match an android device and you must have the android data plan to get internet working. There is no workaround unfortunately...
How about Editing the Imei of the phone, i've seen some threads about it, but it's illegal isnt?
i'm willing to take tha chance :}
where to go?
