Hello everyone!
I ordered my TMOUS TP2 and am waiting for it to arrive...I am very interested in completely customizing my phone, however, I have never done these things before and have never worked with Windows Mobile. I am a decent computer user and have been trolling/reading on all of this for a while now. I am under the impression that as soon as I receive my phone, before doing anything to it, I should flash HardSPL? Can someone explain how HardSPL works and what the importance of flashing this is. I am not quite sure what an SPL is... After I flash HardSPL I will be able to flash any custom ROM/RUU (these are the same right?) on here, correct? Also, installing cab files is a lot easier to install/uninstall and do not void warranty?
Sorry for being such a noob with all these questions. If anyone would like to give me a list of steps on what I can do with my phone and in what order that would be great.
Also, what exactly would void my warranty if I wasn't planning on flashing any ROM/RUU? (Which I most likely would be, but just curious)

is it possible to ruin your phone even with HardSPL? or does HardSPL completely take away the chances of bricking it?
no matter what, i think there's always a risk of bricking your phone when flashing it. its the risk you take bro...
does HardSPL just minimize the chances of doing so?

Like the title says this is my virgin flash. So what do you guys think should be my first ROM? I've looked at a bunch.
Looking for stability and style.
Just to get this correct I need to unlock my phone even though it's att and I'm using att. (Should I just unlock the CID or both)
Then I need to install HardSPL 7.1?
Then flash the ROM I choose.
Then load APPS as needed?
Thanks for the help!
Hardspl v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
I would unlock and supercid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665 then I ran hardspl again just to make sure, because unlocking changes the bootloader.
Then you should be good to go. Hardspl will help you in case you get a bad flash or bad rom, it's easier to recover. Supercid will allow to flash unsigned code (custom roms).
Looks like your on the right track, I'm just not sure where you got v7.1 for hardspl? That's why I included the links.
Also, "any rom you choose", but only from the Hermes forum. Flash a rom for another device means instant brick and you may not be able to recover it.
Hard SPL is a safety net only, there are NO guarantees you won't end up with a permanent brick, Hard SPL or no...
Most times you have to do something REALLY dumb to end up with a total brick but there is a miniscule chance, especially if you are playing around with the radio rom.
Happy flashing...
It was late last night and I couldn't remember if it was 7 or 7.1 lol. I'm charging the phone now. Gonna make sure it's nice and full then I'm gonna give it a shot. Thanks to you both for the help. I just needed to hear I was going about this the right way. I think I'll try one of Schaps ROM's first then try one of Josh's and see what I like about each. I've only got about 50 pages in on each so I'll read alittle more while the phone is charging. Thanks again!!
Oh wanted to ask also is there a Page or sticky just for Apps, skins, themes, and such or do I need to know what I'm looking for and search it?
Dang I thought my other phone had a microSD card in it.....turns out it's M2. Guess I'll stop on the way to work to pick one up. Non SDHC 2gb or less! Another question when it states now copy this to your phone....What file do I copy it to? (I'll head back to the Wiki and see if I can find that myself but figured I'd ask).
copy the RUU_signed.nbh and rename it hermimg.nbh the exe file is the flashing utility, and you don't need it if your flashing via the sd card.
make sure the card is formatted as fat32 (not fat).
Ok I did it the RUU way without the SD card. I'm now at 2.10.01 so I'm good. Now off to work and will hit the unlocker next. Thanks for the help!!
Ok unlock has been completed now I'm going to run Hardspl again. What about the radio I see that is has changed. Should I change that back to what it was at some point?
Ok I've done my first ROM flash wow! I grabbed Schap's WM6 Pro 4.31. I'll try it out and see if I like it. If not try another. Thanks again for helping me thru!
If you wish to risk changing the radio, do so but only if theres a problem. If the radio rom flash is interrupted, you will almost certainly have a brick on your hands.
Use the sd card method to flash so you then minimize the amount of problems you may have.
Remember though, if the radio rom is working fine, don't touch it....
Cheers...

Ah, cool! Thanks, vp3G! I guess I took all the info wrong. Reading the 2 threads it wasn't clear. I guess my method worked though! haha
Yea, it's all quite confusing... Hard-SPL ended up negating the need to use pof's unlocker. Olipro is a friggin' genius (as is pof).
So all I needed to do was Hardspl and I would have been good to go? I have another hermes I'm doing for myself. I do find I'm not getting very little service if not none at all in the house. I use to get 3 or 4 bars. Should I change the radio? Does the radio change with each ROM loaded?
You can try going back to the radio that you originally had, just do it the sd method to minimize the chance of something going wrong.
You could compare the difference between the 2 hermes.

True, but if you wish to sim unlock then you still need Pof's unlocker.
I have to admit I'm getting there myself LOL. It really isn't that hard after you do it the first time. Some things I got stuck on (Pure newbness).
Some ROMs are compressed with .rar and .7.....I found you must download a unzipper/compressor to extract the files you need. I used Winrar some use 7zip. I'm getting there. There is soooo much info on this site. You find that you search for an answer and you get a page of answers with 3 different ways to do it LOL!
We have all been there at one point, too!
When I first brought my hermes home and it was still locked to the at&t network, I was so worried I was going to break it.
Lots of reading, and lots of tinkering later, and I am working on my own rom. Granted, I didn't port it, but I have done so much tweaking that I don't think anyone could tell where it came from.
Funny thing is, I still keep learning so much more. I think it's like my other hobby, ham radio, I don't think anyone can try everything! It seems to go on and on.
Ya know you gotta love the internet LOL. I've learned about so many things (mostly due to them breaking lol). Here's another question for you guys. For those who have Josh's 6.1 ROM. Where is the lock unlock button??? I see the lock device setup for password protection but I don't see a regular lock the screen so I don't make but calls button. LOL I'm gonna try to load his S2U2 thing when I figure out how to do it.
You can add device lock to the today screen under settings>today (at least it should be there), but if your using manilla I don't have a clue lol
Hi all. I'm sending in my TP2 for warranty repairs on the screen. Screen is black, won't show anything, but the touch functionality works.
Anyways, I need to flash it back to Stock ROM, but am not sure what will happen if I cannot see it. If it works without having to interact with the phone, I should be ok, but if it bricks, I won't even be able to tell!
I don't think I will even attempt at relocking the SPL or bothering with the Radio, mainly because neither are available in Stock versions.
My question is, what is everyone's experience with not flashing back to a full Stock device for warranty repairs? Anyone ever gotten charged? Did Tmobile even notice
Thanks!
Try MyMoblier to Remote Control your phone.
Dave
I guess that would work since MyMobiler installs by itself via Activesync. Still wondering if I should go through all the trouble though...
I've read HTC refuse to service (or charge) if they find the OliNex SPL.
And rumour has it, they are actively looking for it.
Dave
Ok thanks. Just what I was looking for. I will go ahead and try and relock the SPL via MyMobiler. However, what should I relock it to since a Stock SPL isn't available? I know this probably belongs in the HardSPL thread, but do you know if an AT&T SPL would work ok for a T-Mobile phone?

Any of the Stock SPL's should be OK.
Dave
Well for some reason I cannot get MyMobiler to install by itself. Is there any other to view via PC or install a program without being able to see your screen?
Try this one:
Pocket controller
Thanks Orb! That actually worked. Luckily I knew where to press to authenticate a cab install... After installing my stock ROM I was able to use Pocket Controller to step through all the start-up procedures which were actually preventing me from relocking it back to a Stock SPL. Thanks againt
PS I would highly recommend AGAINST trying to take your device back to Stock with a dead screen. it's a pain in the butt!!
I have an at&t tilt2 phone with custom rom, & i want to go back to stock rom for warranty purpose, whn i searched the thread,i found many posts regarding this same prob, & hence i even found the link to download the stock rom,

Worth to read here in case you haven´t.
As far as I understand you can go back to stock ROM and that way you can send to warranty your Rhodium, however I could be wrong...
Let´s see what the experts say.

All that means is that you never have to HardSPL again to flash more ROMs.
You need to restore the original SPL for warranty returns, otherwise they will void your warranty (and I think they make you pay full price for the repair). The first thing they do when they receive your phone is put the phone in bootloader and see right on the screen that a non-ATT SPL is on the phone, and that you have messed with the ROM (it says right at the bottom of the screen in bootloader "Olinex" after you HardSPL, remember?). They will void your warranty for this. They look for any reason not to honor the warranty, and charge you for the repair. So make sure you restore the SPL.
Read the link that rgb posted above, it has instructions on what to do for warranty returns (flash stock ROM, then restore SPL).

Ok, i know this is a question in the dev section but i think it belongs here, if mods think different then please move.
As the title says really - if i choose not to try the S-OFF - will i be left behind later on down the line with regard to custom ROM's??
If i bricked my phone the wife would go bonkers, so i am really wary at the moment with trying it as there is a higher chance of bricking it. Anyhow thats a seperate issue..
So maybe some devs can answer my question??.. Am i at some point gonna have to take the plunge or is it more of a nice thing to have, more than a necessity?
Or is there likely to be a later version that has a lesser chance of bricking if does go wrong??
Cheers all for any replies..
I think that if a custom ROM requires S-OFF it will have a good reason, or the dev is being lazy.
Also HTC is very likely to plug the exploit that gives S-OFF at some point, if it's possible to do so.
Moved to Q&A as not development
You dont need a security unlocked device, there will be no diffrence apart from the fact you wont have any write access to the nand chip while the device is booted

Kool.. So more of a nice thing to have rather than a must!. Appreciate replies.. I will hold off doing it.
Cheers

I do agree from what i have read, but for me personally the risk at this time is too much.. If anything did go wrong i would be kicking myself.
Maybe at a later date as i said if a more less risky version comes out.

No such thing. It's not the application that's risky, it's the procedure in general. You're in essence flashing the lowest level of your phone, if it fails the phone will be useless but the chance of it failing is almost negligible.
one thing i am willing to ask. does that mean that turning security to off, you do not need to pay for unlock codes? you can just turn s-off and flash a rom and it will unlock the phone?
sorry for the dumb question!
S-OFF won't sim unlock the phone.
A lot of people are flashing this without knowing what it does, which is just plain stupid. The risk is minimal, but there is a risk that it will totally brick the phone permanently. Nobody should flash it unless they want to use S-OFF for something. It'll also absolutely guaranteed to void the warranty, there's no way HTC will touch a phone if you return it with the S-OFF bootloader (though it is easy to remove).
At the moment it's most useful for devs, in order to test changes without the need for reboot/recovery/reboot.

no need for normal usage of the phone ... you can also do all without s-off ... with s-off you dont have to reboot everytime ...

That statement will do me nicely! Me not a dev...
I've had my phone about a month now and it's going great. No complaints or issues (proximity sensor is behaving itself nicely). I'm now thinking of rooting it and getting CM7.
A few questions:
1) Does rooting void warranty?
2) Is it possible to 'unroot' and go back to the stock rom and have the phone exactly as it was out of the box?
3) I'm on software version 1.72.405.3. I'm guessing I'm going to have to downgrade to be able to root my phone?
4) What is the likelihood of bricking my phone and is there a way to unbrick it if such a thing happens?
1. Yes. Rooting does void warranty, as fas as i know.
2. I believe you can do so by flashing official RUU package.
3. Yes, you would have to downgrade first.
4. There is a possibility of bricking, but it should not happen if you follow all the steps needed.
If i am wrong on some points, someone more experienced should correct me.
The previous points were quite right. You shouldn't be scared of rooting, just read enough and follow the instructions very carefully and you should be just fine. People tend to speak about how someone has bricked their phone etc. but these guys with bricked phones never show up anywhere so there's a kind of a paradox I'm not saying that trying to root couldn't harm your device, I'm just saying that if you do everything very carefully and "by the book" the chances of bricking are very minimal if any.
Oh and if you haven't seen this, heres a good guide to get you through http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Full_Root_Guide
