Convince me to either Tmo TP2 vs MyTouch 2 - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Had both of them, and now i have TP2. i like the design and all, but it's bit of learning curve for me... and for Android, is cool device but, it looks like a toy...
your pick on this?

I post on this thread so you know which one I chose And love it. Also for the first time, I quite like the stock ROM from Telstra. There are a few great apps that they put in, including JCTCET Presenter which let you create and edit Powerpoint files. Don't like the Telstra theme though so have to learn how to create my own theme.

Best iPhone skin/theme or look-alike for Touch

I bought a Touch from Sprint a few days ago because my ATT 8125 Wizard finally broke down. I wanted to know what fellow touch users think to be the best iPhone or iPhone-like loader for the Touch.
So far, I have found:
- Gigabit iPhone Software Theme (You need to pay for this!)
- iFonz (A good but slow skin)
- PountUI (iPhone-like, but limited in functionality)
Any other suggestions fellow Touch-users?
This is a post from (Mooring) over at www.pdaphone.com
Here is another iPhone like interface. It looks relatively new and I have not tired it. There seems to be a good design for customization. There is a video of the application at: FreeStylWM.com www.whoneedsaniphone.com
Thank you tmz
Thank you tmz,
This looks awesome, and also looks like it will most-likely be the best running "skin" for ppc users who want that iPhone-feel. Downloading now..
http://www.iphonetheme4ppc.com/
Requires WAD and WA3, but easily the best theme available.
Do not want to pay for iPhone skin
I do not want to have to pay for the iPhone skin.. In order to maximize the speed of the handset, I realized that the best solution would be to find a way to edit or add an additional side to the built-in cube with the iphone icons. I have found many posts doing something similar, but haven't found one that could actually make this happen..
Any ideas?
This is the one i have on my phone and love it.........

Samsung Ominia

Has anyone made a ROM using the Samsung Ominia User Interface? i saw it on youtube the other day and it looks cool i was just wondering if anyone can make it.
I could. The Omnia interface is nice, but its not all that better than the M2D imo.

ofcoursee NOTHIN is better then ur ROM (1.27 BELL) that i m running ryte now NO doubt about that.
but its nice to have different things you know to see little change in our HTC TOUCH thats what i think. you dont have to do it just for me. beacause i do understand it takes countless amount of hours and hard work.
soo if more people agree and if they want it too, then ill kindly request you too make it.
I KNOW tht if ur gonna make it then it will be the BEST thing out there!!
thanxx alott bro
im sorry but that would be wicked !!!!!! the FEWedgets plugin was cool for a minute but boring, to limited.. and not tha best quality.. I aswell wouldn't ask for tha amount of work to be put in.. but 4real that would be pretty sick! imo
yea ehh thats what i thought
no doubt it takes lots of hard work but if we have more people wanting this
then we can kindly request NFSFAN to make one for us.
so can everyone who wants this ROM just post a reply saying "yea this would be nice or yes u want want this ROM.
yea this would be nice!
Hey all,
One of the guys I work with actually has one of these phones and I played around with it for a couple hours the other day, and IMHO the interface kinda sucks LOL
While the wow and cool factor lasted maybe 10 minutes or so the actual usability and functionality of the phone with added configs and settings didnt really do alot to the form and feel of the phone compared to anything custom on a WinMO device, Android (referring to the Vogue port of Android) or even the IPhone
Really, the adding and removal of the widgets are nice, but its through 5 hoops to get to any real apps or make any useful activity of the phone plus with the smallish screen on a vogue device the widgets would dominate the available area and with like the Omnia start apps without the intention of wanting them opened when trying to open something else.
Again, not against it, but seriously I dont see anything all that useful other than a few minutes of wowability until the omnia gui is unchecked and tf2d or standard WinMO UI would be re-enabled by the user - of course to each their own and if the desire is there enough someone will build it although I would personally love to see more progress into the area of WinMO 6.5 or 7 than the Omnias interface or even more stability and speed being developed and worked on for the existing 6.1 WinMO/Custom ROM that currently exist

I'm with him ^^^. The gui doesn't really appeal to me, but like I said, depending on the factor of people wanting this, I may consider making a ROM using it. When a reliable and real build of WM6.5 comes out, I will port it to the Vogue.
lol yea I kinda agree, still would be cool, just to say tho.. any possibilty geting a omina style on screen mouse cursor ? its cool in skyfire, but if possible to port that to be able to use thru out menues etc on a htc would be sick!
just a thought
I would also like this. It reminds me of the Android, with the removable widgets. It's nice to have a change every once in awhile!
Not gonna lie I would like to see this a lot
I would like it I'm actually thinking of getting one when my phone is up for renewal or a blackberry storm....just wish there was something new and exciting coming out just seem like we have maxed out the vogue. And android seems like a pain in the ass to get going from reading the thread to many damn steps and buttons that do the opposite of what they were intended to do?!??!
+1 on the boring UI. It would be cool, but the avail widgets are quite useless and can't be used with other plugins. One thing I found odd was that you can't lock the widgets into place, so everytime you click, they move.
I just think the mouse feature would be really cool to have.
Mouse
Hey, those of you wanting the mouse feature, you might wanna try a program called VirtuaMouse One-Hand. I know it's probably not the exact same but it's somewhat the same concept.

Things to smile about with the Touch HD.

I'm starting this thread out of enthusiasm for my new Touch HD. I recently "lost" my Athena when my wife neglected to grab it with my laptop while exiting a taxi. I had my baby daughter in my hands and didn't realise that she wasn't aware of my phone as well as my laptop. So... Out with the old and in with the new.
First off, the Touch HD is beautiful. A lot of people are posting videos of the Touch HD and the iPhone, side by side. Of course, we get most of these videos through youtube, and of course the iPhone always looks brighter.
Let's get something out of the way, the iPhone has a capacitive screen. That means there's no metalic film between the lcd screen and your eyes (edit)(Touch HD has a resistive screen, there's a metalic layer there... .
So, brighter it is. What you won't notice with youtube (on account of crap resolution) is just how clear everything is on the Touch HD in comparison to the iPhone.
I've owned two iPhones in the past, and I'm happy to say goodbye to freezing apps, or altogether phone freezes. (edit) before people argue with me, yes the Touch HD freezes from time to time, but usually when I'm pressing it too hard with apps or a new rom. If I use it like normal it won't freeze... Not something I can say about my iphones...)
Something else to smile about is, although the user interface of winmo phones isn't as user friendly as say an iPhone, it is however a lot more open to customization. Let's face it, who wants to have to open a stupid proprietary application like iTunes (god I'm sick of the small i now...) just to transfer some music or videos?
How about the fact that itunes (see, I'm not doing it anymore) renames videos, creating problems like not knowing which episode of a season you're watching? I don't care how much Steve Jobbs loves himself or his visions of a software utopia, to me, control and variation is everything when it comes to something I OWN.
We use computers enough to begin to take for granted, copy, paste, click, and drag. Own an iphone (still not capitalizing the second letter ) for a while and you'll soon come to miss something so easily taken for granted otherwise. I love just dragging the music, videos, and files directly from a directory on my computer to my phone. It's just so damn good...
I should thank Steve Jobbs for creating a device that would remind me how much better windows devices are than the iphone. "Thanks Steve, your phone sucks, but the lesson learned will stay with me for life."
Now, another thing I truly love about my Touch HD (and winmo phones in general) is having access to my file system on the phone itself. Let's face it, it rocks simply put.
I like being able to watch videos in my mobile browser (with a third party browser like opera of course) and not be limited to the youtube app like we see on the iphone (iHabit broken?) This just adds to the constant smiles on my face on account of the small surprises provided to use the winmo community.
I am probably forgetting a lot of things (actually, my hand is broken so I'm being lazy and knowingly neglecting to list more), but I can't forget what just may be the biggest combination that puts a smile on my face with this phone.
Flashing custom roms, and the excellent community here at xda. If I had only my winmo phone and the official rom, it'd be a pretty cool phone on account of it's inherent features (read above), but the mere fact that there's just so much support, and an ongoing river of new software, roms, and support here at xda, just makes this phone a constant surprise.
You can unlock, and jailbreak the iphone, you can skin it, theme it, and add software, but nothing and nowhere even close to that which is possible on a winmo phone, and it's thanks entirely to the individuals programming software, porting things, and cooking excellent roms.
Because of this and so many other facts, I will continue to choose winmo devices, and more importantly, keep a smile on my face while modding, flashing, cabbing, and downright enjoying the one I have now.
Caid.
Sorry, last edit. Just a note to all new users of the Touch HD. Use the wiki, I know the forum says that, but hear it from a user. The wiki for this phone is absolutely beautiful and really is a step by step on doing EVERYTHING you will want to do. It's not confusing, it's not difficult to follow, it's software community perfection in one spot.
So... USE THE WIKI.
Agreed!
It is funny, because people keep saying that they get turned off a phone because it is WinMo - I am the opposite, I get turned off because it /isn't/ WinMo! Honestly, I think we can all put up with some occasional glitches for a system the is /completely/ customisable.
Having said that...I am not an iPhone hater. I think the iPhone is great for people who are used to have non-smart-phones (dumb phones?) or PDAs, who don't have time/not willing to learn how to use one and are not particularly tech-savvy. iPhones are designed to just work out of the box - if you're not prepared to fiddle around with your phone to get the best out of it, go iPhone.
But if you're willing to play around, to take a few risks and to just have some fun with your phone...WinMo is the way to go (or Android, I guess).
Also, I can honestly say that xda forums are the only app store I need
Thanks for all the roms/apps/fixes guys!
nicely said
I don't hate the iphone myself, I've just used it long enough not to like it very much either. I got sucked into the iphone craze, how fluid the OS is, and how smooth it is. But then I used a nice winmo phone and realised all the wonderful things I can do with it. I have control. Another important thing about winmo phones is the fact that it has a great learning curve. If someone isn't tech savvy and just wants a phone, they got it. But for someone like me, I like something that takes a LONG time to really figure out. Getting into custom roms, rom kitchens, tweaking apps, registry editors, home made software, is just not an iphone option.
Caid.
not to mention that it's easier to develop useful software for winmo devices
i tried using the I am rich crap instead of ArcPad... guess who did the job
I also forgot to include the fact that with all these apps, roms, themes, tweaks...it's like having a something new to play with all the time!
Pretty much means that I shouldn't get bored of my phone any time soon =D
iphone always looked like a toy phone with it functions to me. Come on - no navigation, limited phone functions, limited software, no mms, crappy 3g. It is like an overgrown music/video player with not so great resolution and aside some phone functions. blah
mmm
I love my Touch HD Cause :
Screen the REs is HUGE and very clear .. butter then the Iphone
MMs and vid's.. look soo sexy .. widescreen etc.. better then teh Iphone
the touch is not as good as the iphone.. multi aspcet etc. but it's better then my original touch ....
I love the Winmo.. as much as I hate Microsoft, cause it's links with everything.. it's so good I use it as 8GB pen drive.. I always have it on me .. and can take it every where .. !!
hmm..
You know, let's be honest about the iphone, it's not better or worse than winmo phones, it's just different. For a lot of people who want a movie/music player, it's a great phone. It's just not ideal for people who want to dissect and customize. As I stated earlier, being able to load custom roms on my phone is what really floats my boat.
Again, my phone isn't better than an iphone on a grand scale, it's just better than an iphone for me. And when I buy a phone, that's what matters.
Caid.

Questions about switching from Droid Eris.

Hello,
I'm new to these forums and have tried to pick the right place to address my dilemma. I have a Droid Eris running Android 2.1 which i do enjoy a lot. My 2 year contact with verizon is now up. I've been considering buying the TP2 at its two year contract price. I feel like I would enjoy a hardware keyboard for texting over the onscreen one that the eris has. I haven't had a Win Mobile phone before either. I really like Android and understand it's in the process of being developed to work on the TP2? But it's not quite finished yet? I would love to hear some pros and cons of the CMDA TP2. I'm also knew to custom Rom's, so if that could be explained.... anything would be much appreciated. I'm really thinking of switching to this phone.
Thanks,
Sam
Yo sam,
Welcome to the forum.
If you do go for TP2, you've made a good choice. I wont hype it up too much as ive never really used Android that much. So i wouldnt know how good it is day to day.
Anyways,
Personally i prefer Windows Mobile over android, just for the simple reason that to me, its like a mini pc. It does pretty much everything i do on my pc. Which means i can take my pc out with me lol.
The phone itself is pretty good. its handle most of what i thrown at it. and i live with it every day without any troubles. I glad i chose it.
In a nut shell. A ROM is the software that runs the device.
There's Stock ROMs - From the device manufacturer (in this case HTC)
There's Branded ROMs - Usually Stock ROM with Service Provider carbage slapped all over it
And there's Custom ROMs - Stripped dry of carbage. More up to date. Usually packed with extra features
Check this thread if you want to read up a bit more on custom roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5929420
Check post #6. I just posted some links about ROMs and a guide to flashing
I'd like to add that WinMo is a workhorse. It isn't as pretty or flashy as droids or iPhones, which are made more for fun factor...media, texts, games, etc.
If that's what you like, you may be disappointed with the TP2.
If you want a solid device that will keep you on track in personal and business life, if you want a device that will be reliable then you want a TP2. This is a WORKING device, with PLAYING device capabilities. Meaning, you can have media and texts and facebook, all that, but where it excels is at the business level.
I am a busy mom. I am on PTA committees. I am a cancer survivor. My device keeps me on schedule. I can make numerous phone calls. I can fire off an email, text a PTA member, edit a school bulletin, research something online for my kids, and even listen to FM radio or my own playlist while waiting at the doc office. Yes, I can facebook, but it isn't as quick to access as on a Droid or iPhone. I can do all of this simultaneously...it may slow a bit, but never crashes. I can also do all of this and only need to charge my device once every day to day and a half. I never power down my device. I am not gentle on my device. I keep saying that HTC WinMo is like Timex. As I said, this is a workhorse, it can be flashy and pretty, but first and foremost it is to work.
Figure out what your needs are, then decide if WinMo is for you. If you are a busy person, then WinMo is definitely what you need.
ok thank you both for your responses! I'm a college student who will be using this for more than just fun. However, my biggest use of a cell phone will always be texting.. that's one of the biggest reasons i see the TP2 as a great alternative from the eris, because of the hw keyboard. i do like the eye candy that android comes with, like facebook auto syncing contacts information with contacts you have on your phone, pics, etc... overall though isn't the TP2 a better more capable phone?? and how far along is the android development on this devise?
I briefly had a droid phone before getting my TP2. Part of the reason for the response quickness is because of the type of screen they use...that being said, the TP2 is not a slow phone...it may seem slower at first, but as I said before, its capabilities are currently (I think) better than droid.
As a texting phone, I have had no issues, and I installed a third party app called SPB Group SMS which allows me to send mass text messageges to pre-designated groups. I love the physical keyboard, it was well thought out in its design and makes fat finger texting easy.
I previously had an HTC Wizard with WinMo, which I used to take notes in class, as well as write then sync/copy to my PC any college papers. The TP2 has Office as my Wizard did, so this will be useful to you as a student.
The browsers, both pIE and Opera are decent, and makes it easy to look up info on the fly. It has a micro SD slot, which on mine currently has a 4gig card, so there is more than enough expansion capabilities--room for school notes, pictures, music, whatever.
This device can do pretty much everything a droid can do, but it does it with oomf, and the best part is that the battery life is great, and the device is solid.
As for droid to TP2 development, it seems to be coming along at a nice clip...it is still not 100% fully functional, but, unlike a droid device, has been made with dual boot abilities...so you can have WinMo and eventually a working droid. Check out the actual sub-forum and read, read, read...you will learn much about how the process is going.
As far as i am aware you can sync facebook with contacts in windows mobile. its how i update my contact pictures.
When it comes to the XDAndroid Project, its progressing very quick. Updates are out pretty much weekly.
But at this point in time these services/features are NOT working:
BlueTooth
Sound (in call mic and earpiece work, no ringtones or music)
GPS
Camera
Opengles: using software rendering for the time being

+1 You should watch out about what you say about Windows Mobile in an Android forum(Oh and what ever you do, don't say the word "iPhone") because there are some crazy people out there. And it's pretty obvious what your answer is going to be, if you were to ask someone if WM is better than Android in an Android forum then every one is going to say Android but if you ask which is better in an WM forum, people would say that WM is better.

Funny how that is.
The real answer seems to depend on personality, since they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
For me, it's all about being able to tinker and customize in Android, but i would never suggest it for someone like my wife, just cuz a phone is a different thing for her. Her unnamed device is perfect for her, but not for me.

Personally, i dont see anything great about window 7. I mean, its great looking but it doesn't look like something I'd want. They tried to simplify something and they did a too good of job to me. Its not really your phone, its what windows wwanted you to have. That little custimazations.

I was going to bash WP7 as well, but i figured i ought not too.... However, not to "bash them" pers'e, One of my REALLY good buddies got a Win7 phone, and HATED it, turned it back in after 2 weeks of using it.
I played around with it... and although yes, it was "buttery" smooth (which was REALLY nice)... that was about all it had for it.. what bugged me the most about it... ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, Absolutely NO customization/personalization.... And to me, that's a huge deal. Now for someone that doesn't want/need all that Personalization, or customization, i would say it is a nice phone.... it is VERY smooth.
ever since i had a tmobile wing and att 8525 with wm5 i wont go back. same thing when i had a blackberry.
it seems i went from worst operating system and kept moving to better ones.
random nokia phone -> att 8525 -> blackberry 8320 -> blackberry 8900 -> motorola cliq -> g2
finally i got a phone that does almost everything exactly how i want. I wish the buttons on my g2 worked like the blackberry ones. with forward/reverse track and pause/play >< but at least its fast as hell and all my emulators work perfectly.
I have both the G2 and the HD7. Love them both equally. Android for its customization abilities and WP7 for its simplicity. why discriminate? some days i feel like an android guy and some days i feel like a WP7 guy. Life is too short to have just one phone let alone one OS
Never had a windows phone but I too am interested in trying wm7 a little bit.
They call is bi-os-curious hahaha
